Yet, the term describes only the most recent instance of media technologies constituting and enabling state bordering. While states around the world rely on and invest in ever newer “smart” technologies to control migration, these developments stand in longer historical continuities, not least hailing from projects of mobility and population control of colonialism, racism, eugenics, or carceral regimes (Chaar-López, 2019; Weitzberg, 2020; Pfeifer, 2021; Leurs & Seuferling, 2022; Tazzioli, 2023). This conference aims to address the international research field on temporalities and histories of smart borders, to trace genealogies and longue durées of media, communication, and information technologies in the control of borders and migration. Such histories can be traced on different levels: materialities of media technologies, uses and practices around them, struggles against bordering tactics and technologies, as well as socio-technical imaginaries of what these technologies can and cannot do – all of which are characterized by continuities and change. While media shape borders across time, media technologies are also shaped by and emerge from projects of bordering. In this sense, borders can be better understood by attending to their media, and vice versa, media histories more generally can be explored at the border – a “technological testing ground” (Molnar, 2022) historically and today. Questions guiding the conference are: * How can we understand histories of the “smart border” within histories of media technology and digitalization, as well as within histories of territorialization, biopolitics, racial capitalism, colonialism, and bordered states? * How are technological innovation as well as processes of digitalization and computation historically tested, developed, and trialed in the context of border and migration control? * How has the entanglement of media technologies with borders evolved over time? * How can historical perspectives on smart borders advance critiques of violence and discrimination enacted by smart border regimes today? We explicitly welcome papers that engage with queer, feminist, decolonial, postcolonial, abolitionist, and critical race perspectives on the histories of mediated bordering. Forum objectives The conference will provide: A framework for existing research Relevant context and appropriate applications for using existing research A forum for informing and advancing new research Forum audience Academics and researchers Broadband and digital inclusion policymakers (including state broadband and digital equity staff) Digital inclusion practitioners The organizers are especially interested in these subtopics. Call for Papers: Race in Games and Game Studies Online Conference

Race is a fundamental dimension of games implicating who is represented in games, how the labour of making games is divided, and who is welcomed to play and on what terms. As a field, game studies has only begun the work of understanding these matters because race also shapes the study of games. Game studies is built on colonial logics and animated by white supremacy. The major problematics of the field (ludus v narrative, game v player, pro-social v antisocial) are premised in Western epistemic traditions. And games researchers largely focus on the hegemony of play, the games and gaming practices of the presumed audience of white male players imagined by the mainstream games industry (Fron, Fullerton, Moire, and Pearce 2007). Race in Games and Game Studies will be a two day conference dedicated to exploring how race impacts games and game studies. The conference will be hosted online December 7-8, 2023 and registration is free. We will feature conventional paper panels as well as plenary discussion panels focused on future directions for research at the intersections of games and race. In addition to advancing the state of games research concerning how representations, industry practices, and community norms contribute to the shifting dynamics of racial privilege and marginalization, we hope to identify the gaps and trends in recent research in this area. By outlining what is being done and what has yet to be examined closely, we hope to suggest new directions and possibilities for this work to explore and to highlight ways that researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts might work together to close gaps in the field. We as eager to learn about joy and justice as we are to gain new insight into ongoing/emerging harms, and encourage participation from game scholars and/or developers from all careers stages who are working on topics at the intersection of race and games, such as: - Representations of race and/or racialized identities in games - Experiences of racial minorities in the games industry and/or gaming communities/cultures - Anti-racist and/or decolonial activism in games, game cultures, game studies, games education, and/or in the games industry - Indigenous, Black, Latine, and/or Asian/Asian-Americangames and/or game studies - Racism in games, games education, game development and/or in spaces of play - Black and/or Indigenous futurism in games - Race as a facet of intersectional identity in games and/or gaming - Racialized ontologies of games and/or play - White supremacy and/or coloniality in games and/or gaming Interested games scholars and makers are encouraged to submit abstracts for 15-20-minute-long presentations (300 words + 5 keywords) and a short bio note (100-150 words) to https://raceandgamesconf.uwaterloo.ca/openconf.php by September 15, 2023. Looking for Research Collaborator on Race and TikTok

Colleagues, I have begun a line of inquiry that I am very excited about. Unfortunately, my colleague has had to drop out of our research project very early in the process. Without giving the entire line of research inquiry away, I am looking for a collaborator who is interested in looking how non-Black TikTokers are using Black voices in the co-opting and consumption of Black culture in order to create remixes. The most well-known example that I can think of is "Get somebody else to do it.” Obviously, this has been happening for decades, and even if you think back to Antoine Dodson and Kimberly Wilkins and their viral memetic content over a decade ago. TikTok is so formative in many of Gen Z's daily lives that I am concerned about this misappropriation and displacement of Black voices that I want to write about it. My goal is publish our findings and present this piece at a major conference. I'm anxious to get started on it, but I'd rather team with a writing partner with greater depth in this field. Expressions of Interest to host AoIR2025 and AoIR2026 - Deadline reminder 18 July 2023

The Executive Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from prospective Conference Hosts for the annual meetings of the Association for October 2025 and 2026. With this call, AoIR will return to our regular rotation schedule: the 2025 conference will take place outside of North America and Europe, and the2026 conference will take place in North America. *EOIs are due to the AoIR Executive Committee by July 18, 2023*. EOIs will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee, who will then gauge feasibility through a series of follow-up discussions with proposers. Proposers for the 2025 conference will be informed of decisions regarding conference hosting by September 2023. The AoIR membership will be informed of the 2025 conference location during the AGM at AoIR2023 in Philadelphia. The AoIR conference draws an international group of 500-700 researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the individual, social, political, economic and cultural aspects of the internet and related technologies. The Conference Host Committee is a regional group of scholars that may be part of the same or different organisations. They are also invited to propose a Program Chair. The Program Chair oversees the submissions and review process of papers, panels, workshops, and preconferences, and schedules the conference sessions. The Program Chair may be a member of the organization that acts as Conference Host. Members of the Conference Host Committee should have a strong existing connection to the Association of Internet Researchers. Serving on the Conference Hosting committee is a large commitment. The role of the Conference Host and committee is to make contributions to the conference theme and call for papers, identify keynote and plenary speakers, plan and provide crucial local knowledge and connections, and oversee region-specific fundraising (where possible, provide venue space at cost or in kind). AoIR will assist with the practical conference planning, including negotiating contracts with hotels, meeting venues, catering, and the like, and will partner with the host committee on many of the administrative details of the conference, such as reception and meal planning, AV and wifi provision, and exhibitor displays. Organizations or consortia that may be interested in serving as Conference Host should contact President Tama Leaver at prez (at) aoir.org by 18 July 2023 with a brief expression of interest. The EOI should include the following and be no longer than 5 double spaced pages: 1. the individuals and organization(s) involved, and their proposed roles; 2. the connection of proposers to internet research and to AoIR; 3. a description of any prior experiences proposers have had with organizing or hosting a conference, and the roles played in this; 4. an argument to support the proposed conference location, especially with respect to ease of travel for AoIR’s multinational community of conference participants; 5. initial thoughts on local venue options (AoIR has in the past held the annual conference at a variety of venue spaces including universities, conference centers, and hotels); 6. prospective conference dates, keeping in mind any major local, national, and international holidays, semester schedules, or other aspects that might affect the timing of the conference; 7. a firm indication of whether you will be attending AoIR2023 in Philadelphia and are available to meet for further discussions about hosting AoIR2025 or AoIR2026.
