Deadline to apply: July 14th. This Newman Fellowship is established with the generous support of Microsoft Ireland. The Newman Fellow will be based in the School of Information and Communication Studies. This project is seeking a postdoctoral fellow with experience and expertise in digital policy and/or related areas. Recent years have seen several digital policy initiatives and new institutions, both national and European: from the DSA and the AI act to the OSMR. But to what extent are these new instruments delivering the kind of policy needed for today’s fast paced technological developments? What evaluative tools must we develop to monitor digital policy enforcement and audit its impact? Are all communities served equally? How can we gauge the extent to which digital policy is future proof? What are the next generation technological developments and what might be their implications for digital policy? Applications are invited from candidates who hold a doctoral degree in Information Studies, Law, Political Science, or other relevant disciplines and have experience in associated research methodology and policy analysis. In their past, for reasons relating to transaction costs and legal divergence, platforms have imposed the same set of rules, often of US origin, well beyond the physical boundaries of their jurisdiction of establishment. However, this has led to tensions with rules in other jurisdictions, as well as a shift from cyberspace to cyberspaces of legal compliance. For instance, the European Union has a rich history of 50 years of consumer law and policy that reflects a mandatory legal framework curtailing the freedom of contract on which ToS are based. Some of this regulation, such as the Unfair Contract Terms Directive or the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, have been essential instruments of resistance in the face of the unfair clauses and practices exercised by large social media companies onto European consumers. This talk explores the impact of EU consumer law on social media ToS in the context of a comparison between ToS from four platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter) applied in four jurisdictions (US, UK, Germany and Singapore). It analyses the ToS strategies these social media platforms currently deploy in their global governance, and it speculates on the relative power of legal compliance. Catalina Goanta is an Associate Professor in Private Law and Technology and Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant HUMANads, focused on understanding the impact of content monetization on social media and on reinterpreting private law fairness in the context of platform governance. Between 2016-2021 she was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University, and during February 2018 – February 2019 a Niels Stensen fellow at the University of St. Gallen (The Institute of Work and Employment) and Harvard University (The Berkman Center for Internet and Society). She is also a non-residential fellow of the Stanford Transatlantic Technology Law Forum. Dear all, We hope this message finds you well. We are seeking expert advice from music researchers at all career stages about their training needs around using web data for their music research, as part of the Accelerating embedded computational analysis of Web data about music in UK universities project, led by a research team at Durham University and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AH/X007316/1). Thus, we are inviting music researchers to take part in a 1-hour online focus group session on Zoom, between 4th and 11th July, to discuss their needs and potential training opportunities which would benefit them as a music researcher wanting to work with web data about music. This study has received approval from the Department of Computer Science Ethics Committee at Durham University (COMP-2023-05-25T16_23_51). The feedback from the focus group session will contribute to the design of a free training programme in digital skills tailored specifically for music researchers working with web data, which contributors will have the opportunity to sign up for later this year. First Workshop on "Next-Generation Models for Generative AI" (In conjunction with the Third International Conference on Digital Data Processing 2023) University of Bedfordshire, Luton. UK. November 27-29, 2023 https://socio.org.uk/ddp/workshop (IEEE CPS will publish the proceedings, and papers should follow the IEEE template) AI models use billions of parameters to detect and retrieve text and images. The currently available LL models are experimented with for their efficiency, and at the same time, newer models are being developed. There are many challenges associated with generative AI. The pre-training volume and efficiency are a focus. To leverage the training set with comprehensiveness and accuracy, billions of parameters are injected into the LLM. Current GPTs face criticisim and governments issue a caution to their use. For example, Zhuang Rongwen, China’s cyberspace chief, raises concerns over the power of generative AI and pledges to make it ‘controllable'. The agenda for the future Generative AI is not clear. Improved generative tools should be capable of characterising extremist narratives in corpora to reveal different contexts, which may lead to building semantic-rich content for end-users. Testing the current models and their results may contribute to future research. Considering these issues, we framed a workshop to address the theme, Next Generation Models.
