Call for Chapters, Social Informatics Proposals Submission Deadline: September 10, 2023 Full Chapters Due: February 1, 2024 We solicit chapter proposals for an edited book about Social Informatics. We have a contract with Routledge and committed contributors, but a few more chapters can help us expand the scope and reach of the book. This edited volume aims to present a social informatics approach to understand emerging issues related to digital technologies. Social informatics examines how society is shaped by digital technologies as well as how digital technologies are shaped by political, economic and socio-cultural forces. Taking a social informatics perspective, this edited volume investigates the interaction between society and digital technologies, including pervasive mobile and wearable devices, social media, artificial intelligence, and big data. We invite chapter proposals that make theoretical contribution or contribute empirical work with a social informatics perspective on data, ethics, or social justice, or more broadly proposals that focus on Computerization and mobilization in everyday contexts. The deadline to submit a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words, clearly explaining the purpose and context of their proposed chapter, is on or before September 10, 2023. Authors will be notified by September 25, 2023, about the status of their chapter proposals. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by February 1, 2024. I wanted to take a moment to share an exciting opportunity that has emerged at the University of Urbino in Italy. We're currently looking for a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to become part of our Vera.ai project. This is a three-year research initiative generously funded by the European Union's Horizon Research and Innovation Actions. Our mission is to create reliable AI solutions to tackle advanced disinformation techniques. To this end, we focus our research on detecting coordinated information operations, analyzing the disinformation narratives and campaigns they generate, and assessing the impact they have. The research responsibilities for this position involve two intertwined aspects. Initially, we are pouring our energies into the detection of coordinated sharing behaviors and the modeling of disinformation campaigns. This in-depth analysis is crucial to comprehend the structure and dissemination strategies of disinformation. Concurrently, we're concentrating on evaluating the impact of disinformation campaigns and scrutinizing the role of online platform algorithms that may be encouraging their spread. Our ultimate goal is to formulate a complete picture of the disinformation landscape, from inception and distribution to impact and countermeasures. While having experience in inferential statistics, network science, topic modeling, and cluster analysis would certainly be advantageous, we're primarily interested in your alignment with the project's objectives. Familiarity with the CooRnet R package would also be valuable, although it's not a strict requirement. Survey on the Teaching of Extended Reality Technologies & Synthetic Media in Screen Media Programmes

Dear Colleagues, *With apologies for cross-posting* Please consider taking part in a new survey investigating *the teaching of extended reality and deceptive technologies in Higher Education screen media programmes*. You can access the survey and the participant information leaflet here: https://forms.office.com/e/mPcDEjYkyM You are invited to participate in this study *if you work in the Higher Education sector and teach on screen media programmes (such as those related to Film Studies / Media Studies / Digital Media Studies)*. Participation is invited from around the world and the survey should take *10-15 minutes* to complete. This study is examining the extent to which screen media studies programmes in Higher Education are integrating content related to extended reality and deceptive technologies (such as virtual reality, augmented reality, ‘deepfakes’ and AI-generated media) as a result of the development and mainstreaming of these media technologies in contemporary culture. This survey will gather information on if, and how, these technologies are being taught at two points in time (summer 2023; summer 2026), with a view to understanding trends in their teaching. The survey aims to gain a better understanding of perceptions of these technologies among screen studies academics, including how they relate to traditional disciplinary approaches and any obstacles to them being taught. The survey is anonymous and no personal data will be processed for the purposes of the study. This study is being conducted as part of a broader project, funded by an Irish Research Council Laureate Award (2022-2026), entitled “From Cinematic Realism to Extended Reality: Reformulating Screen Studies at the Precipice of Hyper-reality” (REFORMSCREEN). Jin ** *Mapping the ‘K-’ flow via K-Influencers in global social media pop cultures* This PhD project will examine the K-influencer ecology in the Asia Pacific region, by investigating the flow of ‘K-‘ capital (acronym of Korean culture) in social media pop cultures. It aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the interactions, tensions, and symbiotic relationships between Influencers, industries, governments, and technological bodies within the broader social media landscape. This PhD project will be conducted at the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab (IERLab) (https://ierlab.com/) led by Professor Crystal Abidin as Director and Dr Jin Lee as a Research Fellow and core team member. It’s baaaccck…. UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING WORKSHOP Organizers: Holly Kruse, Rogers State University and Kelly Boudreau, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology For the third year in a row – and the second year in-person – AoIR is offering the half-day (afternoon) Undergraduate Teaching Pre-conference Workshop. The workshop was first offered in 2021 by Holly Kruse (Rogers State University), Adrienne Shaw (Temple University), and Emily van der Nagel (Monash University) to address an overlooked area at AoIR conferences that is of critical importance to many AoIR members: teaching undergraduate students. Teaching is a big part of our academic lives, and in the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? How do we use the internet in teaching when our students don’t have broadband access, aren’t digitally-savvy, and when our institutions do not offer robust technical infrastructures or support? This year Holly Kruse and Kelly Boudreau (Harrisburg University of Science and Technology) are co-organizing the workshop. As professors with teaching experience that encompasses various kinds of institutions, varieties of student populations, and degrees of institutional support, we understand that there are no one-size fits all solutions to teaching in ever-changing technological and social contexts. As in previous years, this year’s workshop will attend to the ways that teaching loads, expectations, terms, and more. are different in different regions of the world. For that reason the workshop will be discussion/conversation-based so we can all learn from and with one another. This workshop will adhere to AoIR’s Statement of Principles and Statement of Inclusivity, which is a commitment to academic freedom, equality of opportunity, and human dignity. This means that in this workshop, just like in the rest of the AoIR conference, no harassment or discrimination will be permitted, and members must commit to the inclusion and recognition of all members. We appreciate the participants in this session arriving with a shared sense of purpose, community, and respect as we discuss teaching. You will be given the option of registering for the workshop (for $15, U.S.) during the conference registration process.
