The aim is to learn from people’s engagements with rising technologies in the Global South. Long Abstract: Data-intensive logics and practices have become highly intertwined with many aspects of people's everyday lives, spanning healthcare, communication, digital activism, and more. In the Global South, the rapid expansion of telecommunication infrastructure, combined with the widespread availability of smartphones and AI tools, has significantly reshaped how people engage with public services, work, consumption and many more. Mobile apps for instance have expedited the implementation of welfare policies, extended access of payment solutions and financial services to previously marginalized communities. However, as more individuals embrace digital platforms, corporations and governments also employ algorithms to control, selectively include, or exclude individuals from this digital ecosystem. This raises concerns and sparks debates regarding equality, inclusion, and privacy. The study of people's experiences thus is crucial as responses to these changes are highly contextual and dependent on individuals' material and affective conditions. Additionally, observing and uncovering ambiguities embedded in digitally mediated everyday life poses methodological challenges. The point of departure for our panel is that datafication remains a highly interactive and relational process. Drawing insights from experiences in the Global South, we aim to reexamine and further explore: The roles of digital technologies How people interact with digitally mediated society The evolving strategies and approaches that (digital) ethnographers employ in their "fieldwork" The opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogues among scholars from sociology, information science and technology, communication, and media studies.

The Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad (UoH), India, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, invite submissions for a one-day symposium on the theme “Constructing the Digital: Working from the Global South <https://aoirhyd2024.github.io/>” ( https://aoirhyd2024.github.io/) to be held on April 13 2024, Hyderabad. This Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Flashpoint Symposium will explore forms and structures of labour contributing to digital infrastructures, content, and systems, and presents an extensive opportunity for emerging and senior scholars, members of the digital/platform labour rights advocacy and activist community in the region to connect around critical questions related to the theme. In addition to two keynote panels, this one-day symposium will feature three thematic panels dealing with the labour behind the construction of the digital—as platform, infrastructure, device, content, environment, or medium, with particular emphasis on experiences and perspectives from underrepresented groups. Submissions to these panels could explore cultures of production and digital mediation, from data annotation and content moderation to platform and gig workers to creators of various kinds, addressing some of these themes: - Visibility and invisibility in the digital and platform economy - Engineering digital infrastructure–who does it, where, and on what terms? - Gigs behind and beyond platforms - Intersectional understandings of worker rights - Skilling, de-skilling and valuation of labour - AI as enabler and threat - The possibilities of collectivisation - The enfolding of labour into the private sphere - New infrastructures of/for work–who and what do they privilege? - The place of digital labour in life–health, leisure, education, etc. Abstracts must be no longer than 500 words outlining a clear research question, methodology, results or emerging results if it is a work-in -progress, and implications or outcomes from research. *Deadline for submission of abstracts is January 30, 2024;* Communication of acceptance February 28 2024. Tim will take us through his recent chronological journey of projects involving AI, including translating dance into sound, training an AI on his entire life archive of photos, finding beauty by amplifying the glitches and using the intuitions of his body as a means to navigate the overwhelmingly infinite possibilities. We will gain insight into the various ethical hurdles Tim hit along the way, and how his artistic practice helped him through these challenges. Tim will also discuss some of his more recent visual work, involving how glitches can reveal something about the nature of (AI) perception itself, and leaning into the glitches to get something new rather than something derivative. Dear list, Sharing an invitation to our upcoming studio at TEI'24 conference, in February, Cork Ireland. We invite technology practitioners to join us in the collaborative exploration of discomfort associated with technology in the age of surveillance capitalism. With the help of body-based exercises inspired by choreography we will articulate the discomforts of living and designing with extractivist technology. Our studio is aimed at technology practitioners of a broad range of expertise who have experienced discomfort in relation to data-driven extractivist systems. In the first part of the studio participants will share their experiences of resisting such systems both as users and creators of technology. In the second part, participants will engage in an ideation session to propose forms of countering existing technologies. Embodied methods and choreographic approaches will be used for making digital discomfort tangible and for guiding the exploration of the topics at stake. As an outcome, participants will collectively design a toolbox to conceptualise discomfort in a tangible, embodied way, and form a network to continue discuss these matters post-studio in an online community discussion group. This panel invites empirical and theoretical contributions that (re-)address concepts of place, culture and the digital. Long abstract Since the late 1980s, anthropologists have questioned the concepts of “culture” and “the ethnographic field” as bounded entities and gradually have shifted their focus from entities to relations. Research into the digitalization of everyday life brings us back to the query of how to define the “ethnographic place” (Pink et al. 2016), and how to conceptualise place and placemaking and its relation to culture more broadly. Due to the ubiquitous proliferation of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, machine learning and new communication media, anthropologists encounter place and placemaking increasingly as a relational practice in virtual and physical proximity (Kaufmann and Palmberger 2022). Concepts such as “virtual culture”, “online culture” or “cyberculture” are too narrow. While people build social relations, negotiate identities and claim space beyond territorially defined places, physical place remains important for the experience of being in the world, including the experience of inequalities (Udupa and Dattatreyan 2023). Concepts such as “ethnographic co-presence” (Chua 2015), “field events” (Ahlin and Li 2019), and smartphones as “domestic spaces” (Miller et al. 2021) have been proposed to address the complex entanglements of place in ethnographies of the digital, however there is little engagement with the notion of culture in the digital environment and digitalized society. Yet, culture can be conceptualized and theorized in different ways, especially when attending to its relationship to place. This panel seeks to re-evaluate place, culture and their interconnections and invites contributions that (re-)address conceptual questions of place, culture and the digital, empirically and theoretically.
