From: Russ Kick <russkick(a)gmail.com> Regarding the ICE documents on detainees, the last update I got was via email from Margaret Hawkins at NARA on June 3 (and 3 weeks later there was a blog posting from David Ferriero). I wrote these up here: http://thememoryhole2.org/blog/ice-document-destruction Of course, this highlights one of the problems with this system: lack of transparency. There's no way to automatically see where any given schedule is in the process. And public comments aren't posted so must be FOIA'd. And the proposed schedules never get posted..... From: Patrice McDermott <pmcdermott(a)govinfowatch.net> Thanks, James. NARA has confirmed a 3-week extension (until 23 Nov) on comments (just late yesterday). So, Emily Manna/Samantha Feinstein will be pulling something together for the openness and transparency folks. Today's event looks at how the USA is doing. <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/DigitalCooperation> [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/coppaat20> Today, *Wednesday October 24 2018* at *12:15pm EDT*(16:15 UTC) the *Georgetown Law’s Institute for Technology Law & Policy <https://www.georgetowntech.org/>* will co-host a half-day conference *COPPA at 20: Protecting Children’s Privacy in the New Digital Era <https://www.georgetowntech.org/coppa>* on the 20-year legacy of the *Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Online_Privacy_Protection_Act> *and how to protect children’s privacy in the new digital era. Two decades of digital advances have dramatically changed the ways in which children interact with the internet, and the way big data is collected. How well are COPPA and regulators keeping up with challenges to children’s privacy and wellbeing? What are key questions that remain around the interpretation of the law? I do not know if this is useful for jurisdictional reasons, but the British Library currently has a call open for grants to protect endangered archives. Do you know of any collections that are currently at risk and need preserving? The Endangered Archives Programme is now accepting preliminary applications for the next annual funding round – the deadline for submission of preliminary applications is 12 noon 19 November 2018 and full details of the application procedures and documentation <https://eap.bl.uk/Preliminary-Application-Documention> are available on the EAP website. https://blogs.bl.uk/endangeredarchives/2018/09/call-for-applications-now-op… On Wed, Oct 24, 2018 at 8:05 AM lindsay blackwell <lblackw(a)umich.edu> wrote: > looping in brandon locke at MSU (who spearheads endangered data week > <https://endangereddataweek.org/about/>) for insight into protecting this > data. > > Lindsay Blackwell <http://www.lindsayblackwell.net> [she/her] > PhD Candidate, School of Information > University of Michigan > > > On Wed, Oct 24, 2018 at 3:54 AM Irani, Lilly <lirani(a)ucsd.edu> wrote: > > > In addition to formal commentary and reaching out to congress, are there > > other measures that would be possible such as requesting the archives and > > creating copies? WebSci’19 welcomes participation from diverse fields including (but not limited to) art, anthropology, computer and information sciences, communication, economics, humanities, informatics, law, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. CALL FOR PAPERS Following the tradition of earlier conferences, contributions to WebSci’19 aim to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. The community engages with novel and thought-provoking ideas and discusses original research, work in progress, analysis, and practice in the field of Web Science, its current theoretical, methodological, and epistemological challenges as well as Web practices of individuals, collectives, institutions, and platforms. In particular, we welcome contributions that · have a broader perspective on the web and that combine analyses of web data and other types of data (e.g., from surveys or interviews) to better understand user behaviour (i.e., online and offline), · carried out longitudinal studies, · present successful cases of inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary web research, · use mixed-method approaches or reflect on the methods used, · discuss responsible forms of Web Science (e.g. regarding standards, methods, generalizability of results), and/ or · reflect on the societal impact of web research, how the web is perceived in the media and in society and whether this clashes with the self-image of Web Science. Please refer to https://websci19.webscience.org/callforpapers.html to learn more about topics of interest, the types of papers and the submission process. CALL FOR POSTERS We invite submissions to the poster session of WebSci’19. The poster session is an opportunity for computer and information scientists to present shorter results, and for researchers from other disciplines to share both unpublished and previously published work with one another and with the Web Science community. Please refer to https://websci19.webscience.org/callforposters.html to learn more about topics of interest and the submission process. We hope to see you in Boston! Fwd: [liberationtech] URGENT: U.S. Dept of the Interior: Records Destruction Request. Public Comment Period.

Dear AoIRists, I'm not sure this intersects much with internet research - though someone might want to document the effort, if nothing else, under the internet and social activism. AoIRists who are U.S. citizens - is this as Orwellian and disturbing as it looks? If so, please act and forward as appropriate. glumly, - charles ess -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [liberationtech] URGENT: U.S. Dept of the Interior: Records Destruction Request. Public Comment Period. Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2018 16:35:57 -0700 From: Yosem Companys <ycompanys(a)gmail.com> Reply-To: liberationtech <liberationtech(a)lists.stanford.edu> To: Liberation Technologies <liberationtech(a)lists.stanford.edu> CC: Mr. James R. Jacobs <jrjacobs(a)stanford.edu> From: Mr. James R. Jacobs <jrjacobs(a)stanford.edu <mailto:jrjacobs@stanford.edu>> I wanted to alert you to a very disturbing thing happening in the National Archives world that may severely impact research, especially historical and scientific research. The Dept of interior is asking for permission to destroy records about oil and gas leases, mining, dams, wells, timber sales, marine conservation, fishing, endangered species, non-endangered species, critical habitats, land acquisition, and lots more. Basically records from every agency within the Interior Department, including the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and others. This is all content that would normally go to NARA for collection and preservation. This is disturbing because previous administrations would obfuscate records by classifying/reclassifying records. This admin is basically just destroying records so they’ll never be accessible. There’s an October 29 deadline for comment to NARA: request.schedule(a)nara.gov <mailto:request.schedule@nara.gov> /// fax: 301-837-3698 /// NARA (ACRA), 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park MD 20740-6001. (Be sure to say that you’re referring to DAA-0048-2015-0003.) Please forward to your networks and researchers who may be effected. More information: https://altgov2.org/doi-records-destruction/ NARA’s appraisal memo https://altgov2.org/wp-content/uploads/DAA-0048-2015-0003_Appraisal_Memo.pdf this is tragic and terrible. james -- James R.
