CfP: Post-H(uman) index? Politics, metrics, and agency in the accelerated academy
by Mark Carrigan 30 Aug '18

30 Aug '18

*Post-H(uman) index? Politics, metrics, and agency in the accelerated academy* *November 29th and 30th 2018* *Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge* *Organised by Jana Bacevic, Mark Carrigan and Filip Vostal * The conference seeks to conceptualise change in contemporary knowledge production in a way that transcends the dichotomy between theoretical frameworks that emphasise the role of humans (e.g. pragmatism, cultural sociology, critical realism, Bourdieusian sociology) and those that seek to dissolve the human and/or focus on non-human actors (actor-network theory, poststructuralism, STS, new materialism, transhumanism). Bringing together scholars in social sciences and humanities whose work engages with relationships between the human, post-human, metrics, and agency in the ‘neoliberal’ university, the conference addresses the methodological implications of how we theorise human agency, the agency of technical systems, and the relationships between them, in order to foster and support critical scholarship and engagement the current (and future) socio-political environment requires. It is by now widely accepted that the transformation of the structures of governance and funding of higher education and research – including pressures to produce more and faster, and the associated proliferation of instruments of measurement such as citation (‘H’) indexes and rankings – pose serious challenges to the future of the academia. The critique of these trends has mostly taken the form of calls to ‘slow down’, or assertion of the intrinsic value/unquantifiable character of scholarship, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. While these narratives highlight important aspects of academics’ experience of neoliberal restructuring, they often end up reproducing the inter- and intra-disciplinary division between theoretical and interpretative frameworks that foreground human agency (focusing on student movements, working experiences of academics, or decision-making) and those that foreground the performativity of non-human agents (focusing on the role of metrics, indexes, analytics or institutions). This intellectual fragmentation constrains attempts to study these processes in genuinely interdisciplinary ways. On the rare occasions when meaningful exchange does happen, conceptual, ideological, and institutional fault lines hinder sustained dialogue, often leading to the reassertion of old certainties in lieu of engagement with complex relational, institutional, socio-technical, and political/policy realities of transformation. The conference aims to provide an intellectual and institutional framework that challenges this dichotomy, and seeks to develop ways of thinking that are mutually reinforcing, rather than exclusive. It focuses on the issue of the (post)human as the ontological underpinning to the descriptive and explanatory work needed, as well as the normative horizon for resistance. It links with preceding events in Accelerated Academy, an international interdisciplinary network assembled to develop new approaches to the analysis of higher education around critical interrogation of the concept of ‘acceleration’. The first event (Prague, December 2015) focused on metricisation and power in the academy; the second, smaller symposium (Warwick, September 2016), was dedicated to theories and experiences of anxiety and work in relation to acceleration; the third (Leiden, December 2016) to the politics and sociology of evaluation in universities; the fourth (Prague, May 2018) explored academic timescapes and the challenges posed by their complexity; the fifth (Cambridge, June 2018) reflected on the role of agency in the transformation of the academy. This conference engages with and responds to the growing interest in scholarship on trans- and post-humanism, and its impact on understanding change in the context of knowledge production. It also has wider theoretical significance, as the intellectual dichotomy of the human and non-human is confronted in any attempt to understand socio-technical changes unfolding in digital(ised) capitalism. In this sense, we aim to address broader questions of social ontology and explanatory methodology posed by the imbrication of the social and the technical, and, not less importantly, the questions this raises for conceptualising agency and resistance in the ‘accelerated’ academy. *We invite contributions for 30 minute talks which speak to any of these themes. If you would like to submit a proposal then please contact mac228(a)cam.ac.uk <mac228(a)cam.ac.uk> with a 500 word abstract and short biographical note by September 30th. There will be no charge to attend the conference. *

Re: [Air-L] Looking for Information on Hashtags, Elections and Youths
by Temitayo Olofinlua 30 Aug '18

Hello everyone, My name is Temitayo Olofinlua and I am a doctoral student at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. My work explores how young Nigerians used a particular hashtag during the 2015 Presidential elections in the country. I am looking at the uses to which the hashtags were put, the kinds of conversations that happened, as well as analysing how/if networks were built around the hashtag. While I plan to use Discovertext to harvest archival tweets, I am wondering if there are any materials on youths use of hashtags/Twitter across the continent/world--especially during elections--that I should be looking at. It will be great if you point me in the direction of past/recent research in the related field(s), particularly with a qualitative slant. Suggestions are welcome. Thank you and enjoy your day. Call for papers: Digital Diasporas, June 2019
by Naomi Wells 29 Aug '18

29 Aug '18

Apologies for cross-posting Call for Papers Digital Diasporas: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, 6-7 June 2019 Venue: School of Advanced Study, Senate House, University of London<https://www.sas.ac.uk/about-us/contact-us> Conference website: https://crosslanguagedynamics.blogs.sas.ac.uk/digital-diasporas/<https://crosslanguagedynamics.blogs.sas.ac.uk/digital-diasporas/> Since Appadurai wrote on the intertwined phenomena of electronic media and migration as disruptive and defining features of modern subjectivity (1996), the relationship between digital technologies and diasporic communities has emerged as a critical area of study across a number of disciplines. However, such research risks remaining isolated within disciplinary silos, often despite the similar processes, practices and materials studied. This conference aims to inspire greater dialogue across disciplinary boundaries in order to develop a richer understanding of the role of the digital in creating and sustaining diasporic connections and communities, and of how diasporic groups and individuals transform and shape digital tools and technologies for their own creative and strategic purposes. Through this dialogue it is hoped that new transdisciplinary ways of working may develop which challenge knowledge fragmentation in order to confront the complexity of the contemporary context of intensified cultural and linguistic flows and new patterns of human mobility. At the same time, drawing attention to diasporic narratives and approaches to digital culture and technologies can function as both critique and challenge to centralised narratives of digital progress and development often restricted to predominantly Anglophone contexts. We especially welcome research which pays attention to the linguistic and cultural dimensions of digital technologies and media. This is, however, not restricted to any specific geographical area, language or type of community. Equally, the digital is intended to encompass the fullest range of digital practices, materials and technologies, while the conference aims to include methodological and analytical approaches ranging across, for example, ethnographic, cultural studies and computational approaches. Areas of particular, but not exclusive, interest include: * Social media and migration focused research; * Multilingualism and digitally mediated communications; * Histories of the internet and web archives research; * Ethnographies of the internet and uses of digital technologies (including research combining offline-online methods); * Digital media, cultural and visual studies; * Digital and diasporic cultural memory; * Digitally mapping and visualising migrations and diasporic networks, with attention to ethical and political concerns. Invited keynote and panel speakers include [more to be announced]: Jannis Androutsopoulos (Universität Hamburg); Tobias Blanke (King’s College London); Alexandra Georgakopoulou (King’s College London); Agnieszka Lyons (Queen Mary, University of London); Mirca Madianou (Goldsmiths, University of London); Sandra Ponzanesi (Utrecht University); Roopika Risam (Salem State University); Caroline Tagg (The Open University); Funda Ustek-Spilda (London School of Economics/Goldsmiths); Janet Zmroczek (British Library) We invite abstract submissions for 20-minute presentations. Abstracts should be between 150-300 words in length (the bibliography does not count towards the word limit). Presentations can be on previously published research or ongoing projects. We intend to develop a Special Issue or edited volume which will include an invited selection of the research presented at the conference. In order to incorporate emerging work in progress, particularly from ongoing PhD projects, the conference will have space for a smaller number of lightning research talks of 5-7 minutes for which we also invite abstracts of 100-200 words. Please submit through EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dd2019<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dd2019> The deadline for submissions is 1 December 2018. Accepted papers will be confirmed by 1 February 2019. We also have a small number of bursaries of £100 to contribute towards travel and/or accommodation costs for postgraduate students or Early Career Researchers (within 8 years of receiving the PhD) whose submissions are accepted and who have restricted access to alternative funding for conference attendance. If you would like to be considered for an award, please attach with your submission a pdf or word document with a short statement of no more than 300 words explaining what the benefits of attending the conference would be for you and your research. Conference team: Francielle Carpenedo, Doctoral Researcher, School of Advanced Study Saskia Huc-Hepher, Senior Lecturer in French, University of Westminster Dong Nguyen, Research Fellow, Alan Turing Institute Naomi Wells, Research Fellow, School of Advanced Study Jane Winters, Chair of Digital Humanities, School of Advanced Study This conference is funded as part of the translingual strand of the AHRC ‘Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community<https://crosslanguagedynamics.blogs.sas.ac.uk/>’ project (part of the Open World Research Initiative) and is led by the Institute of Modern Languages Research<https://modernlanguages.sas.ac.uk/> and Digital Humanities<https://www.sas.ac.uk/projects-and-initiatives/digital-humanities> at the School of Advanced Study (University of London). CFP - Rural Computing: Beyond Access and Infrastructure (CSCW 2018)
by Jean Hardy 28 Aug '18

28 Aug '18

Hello AoIR! A group of us are co-organizing a pre-conference workshop on rural computing for the 2018 Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW) conference happening in the New York City area this November. If any of you are interested in that topic, it'd be a great place to meet other folks. The short call is below and I'm happy to answer any questions. You can check out all the info (including about the conference itself) at www.ruralhci.info. Best, Jean ---- *Call for Participation for CSCW 2018 Workshop, "Rural Computing: Beyond Access and Infrastructure"* Are you interested in computing research in rural areas? Please consider joining us on Sunday, November 4, 2018 for our workshop, “Rural Computing: Beyond Access and Infrastructure” at CSCW 2018 in Jersey City, NJ. There is increasing interest in the fields of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), social computing, and human computer interaction (HCI) in rural areas. In particular, scholars have begun to investigate how to make these sites more central to computing research and design, and not solely as sites with failing or falling behind infrastructure or low technology adoption rates. In this workshop, we will foreground how the study of rural areas and their relationships to technology draw attention to significant topics in CSCW and HCI, including biases inherent in crowd computing platforms, sustainable practices, design, and aging populations. We invite interested participants to submit a 2-4 page position or research paper that addresses the workshop theme (rolling deadline starting September 5). More information, including a full CFP, is available at: www.ruralhci.info. Please direct any questions to ruralcomputingworkshop(a)gmail.com. -- Jean Hardy PhD Student | University of Michigan School of Information jkhardy(a)umich.edu | c. 206.696.0707 | pronouns: he/him/his
