[With apologies for cross posting] *Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações* The influence of new technologies in public and private spheres of society, rather than a reformulation, has given rise to a new social field and directly interferes with how we perceive the world, relate to it and others. In Pierre Bourdieu's (2001) theory, field arises as a configuration of socially distributed relations. Progressively, a universe of socialisation has emerged and consolidated: cyberspace. Although virtual, it exists and produces effects. It can be defined as the space boosted by the different digital communication platforms and assumes itself as an individual communication model, allowing the receiver to be simultaneously emitter. Space of flows (Castells, 1996), cyberspace translates the social dimension of the Internet enabling the diffusion of communication/information on a global scale. This causes an intense process of inclusion and exclusion of people in the network. The reference to info-inclusive and info-excluded societies of the digital scenario is imperative when it is reflected in the geography of the new socio-technological spaces. The dynamics of these territories are directly associated with the way social, demographic, economic and technological variables condition each other, revealing the potential for dissemination of information and knowledge through technologies. In this special issue of the journal Interações we propose a reflection on (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted (although this special issue is not limited to these topics): - Digital and social and economic inequalities in different geographical contexts; - Promoting equality through digital; - Visibilities and social invisible created by movements of exclusion or social inclusion, digital, media, economic, etc.; - Invisible social groups in the digital age; - Digital literacy and vulnerable social groups; - Digital as a geographical barrier; - Conditioning created by technology for the individual in a social context. Platforms or services that advance fundamental human rights

Hi all, I've been asked to contribute some suggestions to a book on digital/social media that are being used to advance fundamental human rights, including privacy. The question is: "Can you please name for me what you consider to be the top 5-10 apps, platforms, or services . . . created by NGOs or the private sector . . . that have done the most to actually protect privacy. We know Telegram is at the top of the list. But what else would you put there (and why?)". Does anyone have a top-5 they would want to share? (ideally with some kind of article reference that highlights why this is a valuable platform/service for advancing human rights. These technologies include features on social media sites such as Facebook Live, standalone smartphone apps (e.g., Periscope), and websites dedicated to live streaming, such as the gaming platform Twitch.tv. Although live streaming has been possible for many years (e.g. Senft, 2008), the evolution of recording devices, data transfer speeds, mobile apps, and other digital technologies has contributed to a recent proliferation of live media. Live platforms encourage spontaneous sharing but controversial incidents raise questions about what should be shared in a live context. Live streaming game platforms showcase modes of self-presentation and self-promotion (Consalvo & Altizer, 2017), which social media influencers also adopt when broadcasting content to adoring fans (Abidin, 2016). Gamers and influencers alike benefit from the commercialization of these practices, generating revenue from brand promotion and boosting attention to advertisements. Clearly, live streaming and live digital technologies have social, political, economic, and cultural impacts. However, research into these areas is still developing and there have been few opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars researching live streaming. We invite you to tackle these topics with us at this pre-conference workshop, taking place at Concordia University's cutting-edge Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. We encourage participation from a range of scholars, from graduate students to early career researchers and established academics. Ecologies of Internet Video: Beyond YouTube (new book)

Dear colleagues, Some of you may be interested in my newly published book, Ecologies of Internet Video: Beyond YouTube, which is part of Routledge’s Research in Cultural and Media Studies series. The book explores the complex, dynamic, and contested webs of relationships in which three different groups of video makers found themselves when distributing their work on the Internet. It draws upon both the Deleuzian notion of "assemblage" and Actor-Network Theory, which together provide a rich conceptual framework for characterizing and analysing these webs. The groups examined are a UK video activist project, a community of film and television fans originating in the US, and an association of US community television producers. Rather than taking YouTube as its point of departure, the book centres on the groups themselves, contextualizing their contemporary distribution practices within their pre-Internet histories. It then follows the groups as they drew upon various Internet technologies beyond YouTube to create their often-complex video distribution assemblages, a process that entangled them in these webs of relationships. Through the analysis of detailed ethnographic fieldwork conducted across a period of several years, this book demonstrates that while the groups found some success in achieving their various goals as video makers, their situations were often problematic and their agency limited, with their practices contested by both human and technological actors within their distribution assemblages.
