WEBCAST FRIDAY: IGF USA 2018 in Washington DC #IGFUSA2018
by Joly MacFie 27 Jul '18

27 Jul '18

This will be the firs IGF-USA that has not been steered by David Vyorst <https://boingboing.net/2017/12/07/rest-in-power-david-vyorst.html>, who left us late last year. But the show goes on, and there's plenty of grist for the mill. In fact, some of the breakouts have so many participants they'll need a gong to move things along. This year sees an emphasis on digital equity, be it connectivity, privacy, or the right to be informed. [image: IGF-USA 2018] <https://www.igf-usa.org/igf-usa-2018/>Today, *Friday July 27 2018*, the annual *USA Internet Governance Forum <http://usa%20internet%20governance%20forum%20%28igf-usa%29/>* (IGF-USA) takes place in Washington DC. IGF-USA 2018 includes panels on Future of Work and the New Economy; Balancing Privacy Concerns with Security, Connectivity, and Innovation; Competition; Next Generation Networks and the Internet of Things; Platform Content Moderation and Liability‎‎; Internet Governance; and Balancing the Fight against Fake News against Rights of Free Expression. Keynoters are Assistant Secretary *David J. Redl*, NTIA, and Commissioner *Noah J. Phillips*, FTC. New edition of Internet Law: Cases and Problems
by James Grimmelmann 26 Jul '18

26 Jul '18

Dear Colleagues, Just a quick note to let you know that the 8th edition of my Internet law casebook is now available. The 8th edition has new coverage of blockchains, the GDPR, and the sharing economy, and significantly reworked coverage of jurisdiction and harmful speech. Although it is written in the form of a law-school casebook, I have done my best to make it accessible to students in other programs, including undergraduates. I have kept the legal apparatus to a minimum, and the book provides capsule summaries of relevant legal principles wherever necessary. It is meant to be modular, so that it can be used to bring in a legal perspective on whichever issues you want to cover. As always, it's available as a DRM-free PDF download from Semaphore Press on a pay-what-you-want basis with a suggested price of $30. (You should feel free to "freeride" to download an evaluation copy.) There's a perfect-bound paperback version available through Amazon for $65.25. There's also an updated teachers' manual, which I am happy to provide to anyone who is adopting the casebook or considering it. Book homepage: http://internetcasebook.com Download page: https://www.semaphorepress.com/Pay2.php Physical version: https://www.amazon.com/Internet-Law-Problems-James-Grimmelmann/dp/1943689067 Full table of contents: https://www.semaphorepress.com/downloads/Internet/Grimmelmann_Internet_v8p0… best wishes, James

AOIR 2018 Montreal: ONE WEEK REMAINING FOR EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION!!!
by Andrew Herman 25 Jul '18

25 Jul '18

2018 Montreal Participants Greetings from your conference organizing team! We wanted to take a moment away from our unceasing labours to make AOIR 2018 Montreal one of the best conferences EVER in order to remind all of you that we are merely a week away from the Early Bird Registration deadline of August 1st. If you are going to present in a paper panel, experimental session, fishbowl, or roundtable you MUST register by the August 1st deadline. Why should you do this? Well, there is a financial incentive: early bird registration will give you a significant discount of up to $100. Why must you do this? You won't be able to present your work in the proceedings. Period. This policy is not about being punitive; it is about being able to proceed with conference planning. Specifically, we need to know exactly who is committed to attending so that we can put together the conference program, especially in terms of creating intellectually coherent sessions out of individual paper submissions. What happens if you register by the August 1st deadline but fate and fortune cruelly turn against you and prevent you from attending, in spite of your best intentions and heartfelt desire? We will be happy to honour cancellation and refund requests received on or before September 1, 2018 (less a 20% administrative processing fee, of course). Alas, any cancellations after September 1, 2018 will not be refunded :( . The link for conference registration is https://members.aoir.org/event-2906396. Oh yes. Don't forget that paid-up members of AoIR receive much more attractive registration rates, so please consider joining You can take care of this business here: https://members.aoir.org/ Finally, we also want to take this opportunity to encourage you to make your reservations at the conference hotel, Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel. To be perfectly honest, we are aware that there are probably cheaper accommodation options available in a city such as Montreal, but we are contractually committed to occupying a certain number of rooms at the Sheraton and will be financially penalized if we don't (we need to pay for all of those presentation rooms!). Thus, if you have the budgetary wherewithal to do so, please follow the better angels of AoIR and reserve your room at the Sheraton as soon as you can make your travel plans. The link to the hotel reservations for the conference is https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/events/start.action?id=1711287757&key=DDDEA… Remember that the discounted rate for the hotel will be available only until September 7. ? If you have any questions about conference and hotel registration, contact our awesome Association Coordinator Michelle Gardner at ac(a)aoir.org<mailto:ac@aoir.org>. Registration still open for the Museum of Random Memory preconference in Montreal
by Annette Markham 25 Jul '18

25 Jul '18

Friends and Colleagues, Early Registration deadline for the Montreal AoIR conference is upon us. And I invite you to participate in our pre conference. Sign up soon!! We’re doing the Museum of Random Memory (MoRM) as an arts-based installation / intervention this year at AoIR in Montreal. The main MoRM event will be on Friday, but we’re also doing a preconference workshop. I know there are other amazing pre conferences to sign up for—even I want to double book and I’m running the pre conference! The MoRM workshop focuses on two things: 1) concerns about what's being preserved or discarded in the datafied age, and how this impacts future histories and memories; and 2) What is involved/required to build public-facing data (media, digital) literacy initiatives around automated archiving and curating practices and personal memory making. We’ll be talking about critical pedagogy frameworks, discussing the conceptual underpinnings of MoRM, and showcasing previous versions of MoRM. In the afternoon, we’ll head over to the MoRM venue as a group to work more concretely and creatively on the performative elements of doing public engagement, as we prepare for Friday's exhibition/intervention. Obviously, we’ll be doing some pre Montreal planning for the exhibition, and we invite participants to join our team of ‘Uncurators' in making MoRM specifically for the AoIR community. This is not required for you to participate in the pre-conference. If you’re curious, you can ask me about it, or follow up here: To sign up: https://goo.gl/forms/2LYtjCeso0414DpE3 To learn more about MoRM: https://futuremaking.space/morm/ <https://futuremaking.space/morm/> To read about the pre conference on the AoIR website and to register for the conference: https://aoir.org/aoir2018/preconfwrkshop/#MRM <https://aoir.org/aoir2018/preconfwrkshop/#MRM> Best, Annette ***************************************************** Annette N. Hi Emma, Could you be more specific as to why you are seeking these materials? (i.e. to understand AI generally, to teach AI to an undergrad class in X). The AI literature is huge, and having a little more info would be helpful. Also, although AI and ML tend to be used interchangeably, they are considered by many to be different. And Jenny, what a great resource. Thank you for sharing. ______ Andrea L.
