Dear colleagues, This is a final Call for Papers for a special issue of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET) on the topic "Re-Examining Cognitive Tools: New Developments, New Perspectives, and New Opportunities for Educational Technology Research". The special issue seeks to rekindle and re-energise scholarly interest in, and dialogue around, the concept of educational technologies as cognitive tools for learning, with a particular focus on higher education and other post-secondary education contexts. A major goal is to encourage researchers and practitioners to take a fresh look at the concept and its possible applications in light of developments in not only technology, but also learning theory, pedagogy, instructional design, cognitive science, and psychology, that have taken place since the concept was first popularised in the early 1990s. The full Call for Papers is available at https://goo.gl/7mc7Uh . The final, extended deadline for full manuscript submissions is 1 October 2018. However, to assist in forward planning, prospective authors are urged to make contact with the guest editors as soon as possible to express their interest, and shortly thereafter to provide a brief proposal or abstract outlining the nature, content, and aims of the intended article. Please feel free to share this information with others who you think might be interested. The Digital Democracies Group at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship for a full academic year to work with Professor Wendy Chun at the SFU School of Communication, starting September 2018. The Digital Democracies Group integrates research in the humanities, social sciences and data sciences to address questions of equality and social justice. Current research projects focus on ways to combat the current proliferation of online echo chambers and discriminatory algorithms by creating alternative data literacies and paradigms for connection: from applications and methods to transform hostile social media exchanges into productive dialogs, to critical analyses of fake news and its historical evolution. The successful candidate will be involved in a research project examining the relationship between networked and physical segregation, as well as ways to combat this segregation through the development of new networking models. Candidates must have their Ph.D. in a relevant discipline within the humanities, social sciences, or physical sciences, a demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research in Natural Language Processing, Data/Network Science, and/or Media Theory, and strong written and oral communications skills. They should also have experience working in an interdisciplinary setting. This fellowship is renewable for up to a total of 3 years; renewals are based on performance and availability of funding. The fellowship carries an annual stipend of CA$45,000. Candidates should email their CV, a summary of research interests, and the contact details of two references to Mark Campbell (mark_campbell(a)sfu.ca<mailto:mark_campbell@sfu.ca>) . Re: [Air-L] Looking for literature on spam in online communities
by Matt Bellinger 01 Aug '18

Hi Spencer, At the risk of stating the obvious, there’s Finn Brunton’s excellent book: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/spam Best, Matt > On Aug 1, 2018, at 10:56, Greenhalgh, Spencer Paul <greenha6(a)msu.edu> wrote: > > Hello all, > > I’m beginning a project about the research and practical implications of spam in hashtag-based Twitter communities focused on education. I’d appreciate any suggestions for any work on spam, especially conceptual work (e.g., definitions of spam, taxonomies of different kinds of spam, etc.), since that seems to be harder to find than work on spam detection (though I’m also interested in that work as well). > > Thank you! > > Best, > > Spencer > > ------ > Spencer Greenhalgh, PhD > Assistant Professor, School of Information Science > College of Communication and Information > University of Kentucky > > spencergreenhalgh.com > twitter.com/spgreenhalgh >

Google Ngram studies
by U. Reips 01 Aug '18

01 Aug '18

Hi folks, for a research project we are seeking unpublished and grey literature Google Ngram studies. Please let Nadja (in Cc:) or me know if you are aware of one or have done one. We'd be interested in receiving an abstract type summary of the results. To provide an example of what we mean take our article "The changing psychology of culture in German-speaking countries: A Google Ngram study" (DOI: 10.1002/ijop.12428), available from https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316737853_The_changing_psychology_… Abstract: This article provides evidence for the long-term affiliation between ecological and cultural changes in German-speaking countries, based on the assumptions derived from social change and human development theory. Based on this theory, the increase in urbanisation, as a measure of ecological change, is associated with significant cultural changes of psychology. Whereas urbanisation is linked to greater individualistic values and materialistic attitudes, rural environments are strongly associated with collectivistic values like allegiance, prevalence of religion, and feelings of belonging and benevolence. Due to an increase in the German urbanisation rate over time, our study investigates whether Germany and the German-speaking countries around show the presumed changes in psychology. By using Google Books Ngram Viewer, we find that word frequencies, signifying individualistic (collectivistic) values, are positively (negatively) related to the urbanisation rate of Germany. Our results indicate that predictions about implications of an urbanising population for the psychology of culture hold true, supporting international universality of the social change and human development theory. Furthermore, we provide evidence for a predicted reversal for the time during and after World War II, reflecting Nazi propaganda and influence. Many thanks and best wishes ulf -- Prof. Dr. Ulf-Dietrich Reips Research Methods, Assessment, and iScience Department of Psychology Box 31 78457 Konstanz, Germany http://iscience.uni-konstanz.de

Special Issue Call for Papers - Always On Anywhere: Streaming Television and Its Effects
by Jacob Groshek 01 Aug '18

01 Aug '18

Dear Colleagues (with apologies for any unavoidable cross-posts): My doctoral student, Sarah Parker Ward, and I are guesting editing a special issue for the peer reviewed, open access journal *Social Sciences*. The complete call and submissions instructions are available here http://www.mdpi.com/journal/socsci/special_issues/Streaming_Television and summarized below. Please feel free to message me directly with any questions. Always On Anywhere: Streaming Television and Its Effects The rise of television streaming and online video have made dynamic media consumption easier than ever, prompting a slow burn on the total hours dedicated to traditional television watching, particularly among younger age brackets. From this shift, entirely new consumption patterns continue to emerge including binge watching, public television consumption, multi-screening experiences, and even self-guided consumption experiences of single narratives. At the same time, algorithmic solutions are now assisting in shaping media exposures on platforms such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTubeTV, among others. This special issue seeks to explore this evolving role of television streaming - and all of the moving parts therein - on health, politics, and civic discourses. We invite participants to consider how the nature or consumption of television streaming is affecting human engagement with these areas at the individual or societal level Possible areas for focus include, but are not limited to: - How are streaming behaviors affecting physical and mental health, particularly among adolescents and young adults? - Do algorithmic recommendations create or break information silos, either improving or restricting civic dialogue? - What relationships exist, if any, between specific television streaming platforms and the ideologies of the content housed therein as it relates to mental health and civic discourse? - How do interactive streaming experiences cultivate collaboration or community among viewership? - How has streaming television changed or impacted our expectations of and behaviors related to civic discourse? - Does prolonged exposure via binge watching engender deeper connectivity between viewer and content? Submission deadline is October 1, so plenty of time to wrap up summer research projects and submit :) Thanks, Jacob -- Dr. Jacob Groshek Associate Professor of Emerging Media Studies Senior Fellow, Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy <http://www.bu.edu/ihsip/> Associate Director of the Center for Mobile Communication Studies <http://sites.bu.edu/cmcs/> Communication Research Center <http://sites.bu.edu/crc/about-crc/> Fellow Hariri Institute <http://www.bu.edu/hic/> Faculty Fellow Boston University jgroshek.org <http://www.jgroshek.org/> Founding Editor, *Journal of Communication and Technology <http://www.joctec.org/>* Founding Member, Boston Civic Media Consortium <http://bostoncivic.media/> Previously: Research Fellow, Erasmus Uni <http://www.eshcc.eur.nl/english/research/research_centres/erasmus_research_…> | Full Member, NeSCoR <http://nescor.socsci.uva.nl/>| Visiting Scholar, IAST <http://www.iast.fr/> @jgroshek <https://twitter.com/jgroshek> | google scholar <https://scholar.google.nl/citations?user=G1XXhccAAAAJ&hl=en> 857-615-4709

Seeking resources on A.I. and machine learning
by Emma Stamm 01 Aug '18

01 Aug '18

Dear AoIRists, I am researching artificial intelligence and machine learning within the framework of digital culture studies and philosophy of technoscience. Right now, I am looking for articles that reflect current developments in AI & ML programming that are suitable for non-STEM experts. Specifically, I am interested in pieces that illuminate the ways in which generalization and inductive/abductive reasoning are essential to algorithms that effectively “predict” the future. However, more wide-ranging, introductory pieces would also be helpful for me. I am familiar with the work of Pedro Domingos, but do not know of many other sources that suit my needs. Any recommendations would be very welcome. Thank you in advance!
