New digital campaigning & advocacy ebook
by Colin Delany 01 Aug '18

01 Aug '18

Hi folks, the new edition of my comprehensive digital campaigning and advocacy ebook is now in the Kindle Store and available for PDF download: http://www.epolitics.com/winning Direct link to Kindle version: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GT0O1FA/?&tag=epoliticscom-20 "How to Use the Internet to Change the World - and Win Elections" is expanded from previous editions and completely rewritten for 2018 -- it mentions developments in the field as recent as this month. The book covers the ways political campaigns and advocacy groups can use everything from social media and digital advertising to data and tech-enabled field organizing, and it's a great resource for researchers and students. It really is the most comprehensive guide to digital politics out there, and I hope it's useful! University courses around the world have included earlier editions as required reading. BTW, if you've downloaded a previous edition, you should have received an email yesterday with a link to download a free copy of the new one, so please let me know if you didn't. Likewise, Kindle users should have received a message from Amazon that the new edition is available. I'm happy to answer any questions! -- cpd "How to Use the Internet to Change the World and Win Elections: A Comprehensive Guide to Online Politics for Campaigns & Advocates" [Ebook] http://www.epolitics.com/winning Colin Delany Epolitics.com -- digital strategy for politics and advocacy http://www.epolitics.com 202-422-4682 cpd(a)epolitics.com @epolitics @dronewarjournal

Hi folks, the FiveThirtyEight team just posted a big data set on GitHub -- three million political tweets from Russian troll farms. The charts on the tweet volume over time are worth looking at themselves, and researchers can dig into the individual tweets. Figured I'd share with this group. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-were-sharing-3-million-russian-tro… --cpd "How to Use the Internet to Change the World and Win Elections: A Comprehensive Guide to Online Politics for Campaigns & Advocates" [Ebook] http://www.epolitics.com/winning Colin Delany Epolitics.com -- digital strategy for politics and advocacy http://www.epolitics.com 202-422-4682 cpd(a)epolitics.com @epolitics @dronewarjournal

Symposium on Digital Research into Media and Politics: International & Hong Kong Studies Co-organized by the Journalism and Media Studies Centre<https://jmsc.hku.hk/> and Society for Hong Kong Studies<https://www.hkstudies.org/> Time: 9:30am - 6:30pm Date: Friday, 24 August 2018 Venue: CPD 3.28, 3/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong Free admission. Details and registration here<https://jmsc.hku.hk/digitalresearch/>. Introduction Digital media platforms are increasingly the places where people engage in politics and with the news. How people talk about public affairs online and act on political matters can potentially shed light on issues of political behaviour, dynamics of public opinion formation, the rise of collective and connective actions, etc. Meanwhile, the study of actions and talks in cyberspace present a range of new methodological opportunities as well as challenges. This symposium brings together researchers who have been engaging in the study of digital media and politics in Hong Kong, China, and the East Asian region to introduce their research projects and/or share their research findings. The aim is to showcase how a variety of available methodological approaches – ranging from conventional surveys to various “digital methods” – can be employed to address issues of theoretical and empirical significance. The symposium shall also provide a platform for interested academics and graduate students to discuss the potential and possible caveats in the study of digital media and politics. 09:30—09:45 Opening Remarks 09:45—11:00 Panel 1 — Research into Media and Politics: From Traditional Survey to Digital Methods Identity, ideology, and social media (King-wa Fu, The University of Hong Kong, Cassius Chow, The University of Hong Kong Y. Hello Stephanie, I’ve been writing about issues of voice, accents, nationality, and gender in the labor of digital assistants in a forthcoming chapter “Sound Bites, Sentiments, and Accents: Digitizing Communicative Labor in the Era of Global Outsourcing,” in A Field Guide to DigitalSTS, edited by David Ribes and Janet Vertesi, Princeton University Press; and “Virtual Receptionist with a Human Touch: Opposing Pressures of Digital Automation and Outsourcing in Interactive Services,” in Invisible Labor, UC Press, 2016. Let me know if you’d like to see them. Winnie Poster _______________________________________ Dr. Winifred R. Hi Stephanie, My book, Giving Voice (MIT Press, 2017), focuses on the social and cultural implications of voice-enabled technology. It's an ethnography of non-speaking individuals with communication disabilities, and their uses of speech-generating technologies (in the vein of Stephen Hawking, but now in the form of apps and tablet computers). It also goes into the history of synthetic speech, and the importance of recognizing that humans not only interact with these voices (i.e., digital assistants), but speak through them as well. https://www.amazon.com/Giving-Voice-Communication-Disability-Inequality/dp/… https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/giving-voice Here's also a shorter related piece in Lady Science/The New Inquiry: https://thenewinquiry.com/blog/talking-like-a-princess-what-speaking-machin… Best, Meryl On Sun, Jul 29, 2018 at 4:31 PM, <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > Send Air-L mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url= > http%3A%2F%2Flistserv.aoir.org%2Flistinfo.cgi%2Fair-l- > aoir.org&data=02%7C01%7Cm.alper%40northeastern.edu% > 7Ca1507b5cc9e24957f34b08d5f5923838%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b92 > 15e7%7C0%7C0%7C636684930731864349&sdata=pxF5CNq3UR2Rb5HPwwu49jFC1FPyk3 > eKNyx2jcBnopI%3D&reserved=0 > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hello everyone discussing voice assistants/voice tech/AI: If you are attending AOIR 2018, please consider joining us for the half-day preconference: "The Medium as Message and Messenger: Human-Machine Communication in the Next-Generation Internet." It would be a great way to network with others. You can register when you register for the conference. https://aoir.org/aoir2018/preconfwrkshop/#MM Disembodied AI, including voice assistants, is my area of research. Some of my own publications that may be of interest: 1 Guzman, A. L. (Ed.). (in press). Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking communication, technology, & ourselves. In S. Jones (Series Ed.), Digital Formations Series. PeterLang. (See link below my header to introduction chapter). 2 Guzman, A. L. (2018). Beyond extraordinary: Theorizing artificial intelligence and the self in daily life. In Z. Papacharissi (Ed.), A networked self: Human augmentics, artificial intelligence, sentience (Vol. 5). Routledge. 3 Guzman, A.L. (2017). Making AI safe for humans: A conversation with Siri. In R.W. Gehl and M. Bakardjieva (Eds.), Socialbots: Digital media and the automation of sociality. 4 Guzman, A.L. (2015). "Imagining the voice in the machine: The ontology of digital social agents" (dissertation). (I have various conference papers/pubs in progress coming out of this). I have author copies of everything but my dissertation on my Researchgate and academia.edu pages. If you cannot access either site, or would like a copy of the dissertation, you are more than welcome to email me off-list. Other scholars with relevant work include: Clifford Nass (HCI) and Lucy Suchman (HCI/STS). From a critical/media studies perspective, Joshua Reeves has published work on the "automation of communication." There was an entire issue in Intervalla (2013) regarding social robots (that is relevant to voice assistants).
