Looking for literature on spam in online communities
by Greenhalgh, Spencer Paul 09 Aug '18

Hello all, I’m beginning a project about the research and practical implications of spam in hashtag-based Twitter communities focused on education. I’d appreciate any suggestions for any work on spam, especially conceptual work (e.g., definitions of spam, taxonomies of different kinds of spam, etc.), since that seems to be harder to find than work on spam detection (though I’m also interested in that work as well). Thank you! WEBCAST THURS: NSF Millimeter-Wave RCN – 4th Workshop, July 2018
by Joly MacFie 09 Aug '18

09 Aug '18

The NYU Wireless <http://wireless.engineering.nyu.edu/> mmW research center pioneered much of the essential tech of 5G. As the field grows the Research Coordination Network <http://mmwrcn.ece.wisc.edu/> is a multistakeholder project to connect NYU and its academic brethren with industry and government agencies, plus the wider community, mainly through a series of workshops of which this was the 4th. Last year the NSF also launched <https://isoc-ny.org/p2/9161> the PAWR effort to foster collaborative testbeds which led to the funding of the Cloud Enhanced Open Software Defined Mobile Wireless Testbed for City-Scale Deployment <https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1827923> (COSMOS) which aims to deploy a city-scale advanced wireless platform *in NYC* by 2023 (more <http://wireless.engineering.nyu.edu/nsf-announces-new-york-city-as-testbed-…> ). The testbed breakout session at this workshop provides an opportunity to learn more about this and similar projects. What should not be missed are the two keynotes John Cioffi (11am) and Ted Rappaport (2:30pm), however, be warned, both are highly technical. John Cioffi is a Interne <https://www.internethalloffame.org/inductees/john-cioffi>t Hall Of Fame inductee <https://www.internethalloffame.org/inductees/john-cioffi> known as “the father of DSL” and his talk might be called 'DSL's not Dead!' as he talks about achieving gigabit speeds over multiple twisted pairs. NYU Wireless founder Ted Rappaport starts by dispellings some myths, talks about the latest in 5G tech, and finishes up with a critique of FCC 5G policy. A nugget I have picked out as a taster for the stream is from the first panel. Ted is asked about what comes after 5G. http://isoc-ny.org/misc/ted_rappaport_on_6g.mp4 Thanks are due to the mmW RCN steering committee for permission to restream this event. The livestream link is https://livestream.com/internetsociety/nsfmmwrcn4/ [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/nsfmmwrcn4/>On *Thursday August 2018* the *Internet Society Livestream Channel <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/nsfmmwrcn4/>* will rebroadcast the *4th Workshop <http://mmwrcn.ece.wisc.edu/?page_id=1372>*of the *Research Coordination Network (RCN) on Millimeter-Wave Wireless <http://mmwrcn.ece.wisc.edu/>*, held at the *NYU Tandon School of Engineering <https://engineering.nyu.edu/>*, Brooklyn on July 12-13 2018. The RCN’s aim is to spur research and development of *mmW wireless <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremely_high_frequency>*, driven by innovations in three key areas: 1) *CSP*: communication and signal processing techniques; 2) *HW*: mmW hardware, circuits, antennas, and digital hardware; and 3) *NET*: wireless networking; along with mmW prototypes and testbeds. The RCN is *NSF funded <https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1648917>*. Hi Khan We just released a short open online module called "What Does Facebook Know About You?" https://open.uts.edu.au/facebookknowyou.html It guides students through downloading their data, exploring privacy settings, and demonstrates some of the ways that data can be used. Might be some useful resources in there? We are pleased to announce that due to popular interest there will now be a Panel on the Ethics of Social Media Data. This will provide a timely opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of using and collecting data from social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, particularly in the wake of Cambridge Analytica. A friendly reminder to submit your abstracts before this Monday 13 August [extended deadline]. Please see attached flyer for more details. The Symposium will be held at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra on 11 September 2018, and is generously funded through The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) in conjunction with Social Sciences Week 2018. Research ethics and platform APIs
by Jean Burgess 08 Aug '18

08 Aug '18

Dear colleagues, I’m keen to hear of your experiences with your own research ethics boards/committees, especially in the PCA (Post-Cambridge Analytica) era: 1. Have any of you noticed a recent increase in IRBs/ethics committees requiring proof of compliance with social media platforms or apps’ Terms of Service/Terms of Use as part of ethical clearance requirements? Please note I’m not only interested in so-called data-driven methods or API access here, but all kinds of ethnographic, qualitative social research, and critical-interpretative approaches as well. 2. If so, are questions of ToS compliance restricted to reasonable questions of harm to participants (for example, your methods may inadvertently induce a participant to share the content of another user, hence violating their own contract with the platform provider) 3. Where questions of ToS appear to exceed the bounds of human research ethics considerations (perhaps appearing more concerned with institutional risk avoidance), how have you responded? Not actually asking for a friend Jean

CFP Gig Economy book
by Michelle Rodino-Colocino 08 Aug '18

08 Aug '18

*Dear Colleagues:Call for PapersThe Gig Economy: Workers and Media in the Age of ConvergenceEditors: Brian Dolber (Cal State University, San Marcos), Chenjerai Kumanyika (Rutgers University) Michelle Rodino-colocino (Penn State University), Todd Wolfson (Rutgers University) In 2016 the US Department of Labor defined a “gig” as “a single project or task for which a worker is hired, often through a digital marketplace, to work on demand.” <https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2016/article/what-is-the-gig-economy.htm> Although it is hard to measure how large the gig workforce is (by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics own admission), it is clear that a new way of working, managing, and profiting is rising on the backs of gig workers. The “gig economy”-- the colloquial name given to the constellation of app-based services that rely on contingent, “on-demand” labor-- is situated at the nexus of transformations in communication technology, economics, and culture. Companies like Uber, Lyft, and Amazon Flex, for example, promise drivers the chance to “get your side hustle on,” “fund your dreams,” enjoy “flexible hours” and “be your own boss.” For millions of workers, however, these promises ring hollow. Low wages and a complete lack of protections have left many struggling and desperate, in some cases prompting tragic worker suicides. As a global phenomenon, the gig economy is being embraced and challenged in a variety of ways in different countries by workers, labor movements, governments, and consumers. Media and new digital technologies play a key role in enabling and justifying the political economic and cultural effects of the gig economy. This volume draws together research that examines the experience of and resistance to exploitative aspects of the gig economy with a range of expertise in the communication discipline (critical/cultural studies, policy studies, technology studies), employing multiple theoretical perspectives (political economy, critical race, feminist) and methodologies (ethnography, history, discourse analysis, community-based participatory research) in a variety of national contexts. We consider the roles that media, policy, culture, and history play as well as gender, immigrant status, ethnic background, racial identity, ability, and sexual orientation in forging working conditions in the “gig economy.”List of possible topics:The political economy of gig companiesWho benefits from gig labor?Experiences of gig workersExploitative aspects of gig laborDeconstructing myths surrounding the gig economyGig worker organizing campaignsCorporate PR, advertising, and policy campaignsThe gig economy and consumer activismTechnologies of the gig economy Surveillance technology and the gig economyGlobal perspectives on the gig economyImmigration and app-based laborRacialization and app-based laborGendering of gig workSexual harassment, sexual assault and gig economySolidarity and divides among gig workersThe gig economy and the culture industryMedia representations and news coverage of the gig economyThe gig economy and the environmentUrban space and the gig economyGig and green economies Gamification Historical perspectives on gig workPlease submit abstracts of 350-500 words to gigeconomyproject(a)gmail.com <{gigeconomyproject(a)gmail.com> by September 15, 2018. Authors will be notified by October 15. Complete essays, between 5000 and 8000 words, will be due by January 15, 2019. * Michelle Rodino-Colocino, Ph.D. "Enjoy the process" --my mother, Associate Professor "Mangia" --my grandmother" "Say it" --my daughter Film/Video, Media Studies, Bellisario College of Communications, Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Interim President, American Association of University Professors (AAUP), Penn State University Park Chapter Penn State University 115 Carnegie, University Park, 16802 *Twitter: @roc <http://www.democraticcommunications.net/>ofem* *Skype@rocofem* michelle(a)psu.edu

**apologies for crossposting** Dear colleagues The Grassroots Radio team, led by the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (Madeira-ITI), seeks a researcher with an interest in the participatory design of the interfaces for community governance of networked radio stations, with a particular focus on commons-based forms of governance and cooperative management. The hired person will be collaborating with the international partners of the consortium on the identified tasks, and will have the opportunity to produce original collaborative research and joint publications with other members of the network, as well as being afforded funding for travel to partner sites, and for attending conferences and workshops. While the emphasis of this work is on the participatory design of the governance of radio stations, a candidate with strong interdisciplinary skills would be able to learn many of the domain-specific approaches on the job. Grassroots Radio is creating a game-changing network of inclusive digital platforms for citizen engagement, community deliberation, and the free flow of information within, into, and out of geographic communities by piloting solutions for connected, inexpensive, community owned and operated radio across Europe. Building on the success of the existing RootIO platform ( www.rootio.org) – with its proven commons-oriented technology and catalytic capacities for promoting collective awareness and action, participatory innovation, community resilience, and media pluralism – we are deploying and testing a network of low-power community radio stations in Ireland, Portugal, and Romania as part of the Horizon 2020 Grassroot Wavelengths project (nº 780890), funded by the European Commission. The initial contract will be for a period of 12 months, for potential renewable up to a maximum of 24 months. More detailed info on the job and the application process: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/327868 Please, circulate it to whoever you think could be interested. Best Maurizio

Hello, I forgot to change the subject heading of my announcement! It is changed now. AoIR pre-conference workshop on Digital Research Ethics and Networked Intimate Publics is now inviting open registration. Workshop title: The Digital Research Ethics Collaboratory for Networked Intimate Publics: Storytelling, Materiality, Ethics & Praxis Facilitators: T.L. Cowan (UToronto), Jasmine Rault (UToronto), Veronica Paredes (UCLA) and Izetta Autumn Mobley (University of Maryland, College Park) In The Broken Earth trilogy, science fiction author N.K. Jemisin (2015, 2016, 2017) imagines a subterranean community called Castrima, a hidden place that is built and sustained by the energies and skills of the most powerful, reviled and thus most endangered specimens of humanity: the Oregens. From the surface, Castrima is invisible, buried below ruins. And underground, from the inside, Castrima looks cluttered, chaotic, disorienting: ?as if someone found an architect, made her build a city out of the most beautiful materials available, then threw those buildings into a box and jumbled them up for laughs? (2015: 338). Ykka, Castrima?s Head Woman, explains, ?This is what we?re trying to do here in Castrima: survive. Same as anyone. We?re just willing to innovate a little? (2015: 342). Jemisin?s speculative design of Castrima is a place made by and for minoritized subjects to protect their lives, to preserve their knowledge and cultural materials, and ensure their cultural survivance (Vizenor 2008; Tuck 2009). This workshop will be led by former co-facilitators of the Feminist Technology Network (FemTechNet), collaborators in the Center for Solution to Online Violence (CSOV) and lead investigators of the Digital Research Ethics Collaboratory (DREC). We use the term ?minoritized? from the scholarly fields of Indigenous, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Queer, Sexuality, Trans-, Gender and Feminist Studies, to speak of populations who may not be in the minority at all ? indeed, statistically form the majority population in most cases ? but whose knowledges, cultural practices, histories and socialities have been consistently undermined, dismissed and rendered insignificant or troubling to the imagined majority (Ferguson 2004; Gopinath 2005; Sedgwick 1990, 2003; Smith 2010; Soto 2010). The infrastructures and networks of intimacy and distributed publicity are central technologies for the sustenance, support, thriving and survivance of minoritized people, knowledges, cultural materials, and chosen communities. These network technologies are too often situated in academic literature and popular discourse as naïvely pre-digital or non-digital, naturally occurring or innate, rather than carefully and strategically constituted, tended-to and transformed with and as new media and communication infrastructures. In this workshop we invite participants to share stories and practices for the ethical research and engagement with minoritized materials and the networked intimate publics that create them. Workshop participants will take turns leading discussions from their own research experiences in attending to the innovations in labour, arts, organizing and research through which technologies for minoritized survivance manifest and mutate. Like so many researchers we have been caught by the fever to (digitally) archive precarious, precious, minoritized, invisibilized, intimate, forgotten knowledges, scenes, resistance cultures, materials and alternative futures. Bound by their beauty (Siberry 1989), we are also, however, bound by the institutional and platform logics that we hope these archives can transform, and by accountability to the ?the people whose belongings have become [our] ?collections?? (Nowviski 2016). Conventionalised research practices reflect longstanding and ongoing acquisitional, abductive, possessive, extractive practices that bolster these structures, especially the imperialist, settler colonial model of dehumanization, occupation, control, theft, and non-reciprocity (Kovach 2009; Moreton-Robinson 2015; Murphy 2014; Simpson 2014; Tuhiwai Smith 2012). This workshop comes from the perspectives that all research structures?not only those primarily oriented within or towards Indigenous communities?need to be reshaped in order to decolonize and unsettle the imperialist university and to dismantle the domination habits of academic knowledge production. Starting with the important work that AoIR collaborators have already contributed to the field of Digital Research Ethics (AoIR 2002; Markham and Buchanan 2012; Zimmer & Kinder-Kurlanda 2017), we invite AoIR-affiliated scholars?especially those of digital culture and researchers building online repositories, exhibitions and other forms of publication of minoritized materials?who are trying to break the habits of extractive and possessive research and publication logics and build-while-we-work-within epistemic infrastructures that acknowledge and jumble existing hiearchives of compensation, credit, value, precarity, security and exposure. Following Jemison?s fictional Castrima, the challenge might be to defend against openness and exposure even in opposition to the institutional logics of our disciplines. This workshop will gather researchers who attend to, and attempt to translate into online information practice, the carefully cultivated tactics and cultures of privacy and counter-surveillance which were, and continue to be, necessary to the survival, and survivance, of minoritized people and cultures. 1. This is a half-day workshop. We will begin with 1 hour of presentations by the co-facilitators, followed by 1.5 hours of group workshopping current, past and future projects that participants bring to discuss, and a concluding 30 minutes drafting protocols, manifestos, best-practices and other collaborative (and future) possibilities. 2. AoIR participants can register for this workshop when they register for the conference; please come prepared to either workshop your own project or pitch in to workshop projects that other participants bring. If you have already registered for the conference and would like to add this workshop please email ac [at] aoir [dot] org . For further information, please contact workshop organizers T.L.
