Social media data collection
by Nicola Langdon 10 Aug '18

10 Aug '18

Dear all, I am a post-doc researcher based at the University of Plymouth. I am investigating the media framing of renewable energy and would like to capture the conversations occurring about this through social media, particularly Twitter. My previous experience with this has been limited to qualitative analysis via a manual retrieval of tweets via Twitter's advanced search (obviously small in number compared to large-scale mining) and coding this in NVivo. I have heard of many third-party sites that previously collected tweets in bulk via Twitter's API, (I think!) (for example Twapperkeeper and I have previously used the free element of Topsy) but many of these seem to no longer be in existence which has led me to query whether this is compliant with Twitter's user policies. I know there have been many conversations around this before but can anybody clarify whether it is possible to collect Tweets in bulk related to specific key words or hashtags? And if so, is there a specific programme that can assist me with this? For example, can I set something up to capture the tweets occurring using specific key words/hashtags over a few months? And is this permissible with Twitter's Ts & Cs? I am currently exploring the possibility of using Keyhole - has anybody used this before? I know there have been numerous similar enquiries so please forgive me for asking again. I do not know very much about computer programming and have never used R or Python so I would appreciate if somebody can explain this to me without too much technical terminology if possible! Re: [Air-L] Research ethics and platform Terms of Use
by Jean Burgess 10 Aug '18

10 Aug '18

And of course, the subject line should not be APIs, but Terms of Service/Use! On 9/8/18, 9:24 am, "Air-L on behalf of Jean Burgess" <air-l-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org on behalf of je.burgess(a)qut.edu.au> wrote: Dear colleagues, I’m keen to hear of your experiences with your own research ethics boards/committees, especially in the PCA (Post-Cambridge Analytica) era: 1. Have any of you noticed a recent increase in IRBs/ethics committees requiring proof of compliance with social media platforms or apps’ Terms of Service/Terms of Use as part of ethical clearance requirements? Please note I’m not only interested in so-called data-driven methods or API access here, but all kinds of ethnographic, qualitative social research, and critical-interpretative approaches as well. 2. If so, are questions of ToS compliance restricted to reasonable questions of harm to participants (for example, your methods may inadvertently induce a participant to share the content of another user, hence violating their own contract with the platform provider) 3. Where questions of ToS appear to exceed the bounds of human research ethics considerations (perhaps appearing more concerned with institutional risk avoidance), how have you responded? Live, from Puerto Rico! Call for Papers 'SITES QUEER: Technologies, Spaces and Otherness'
by Regner Ramos Ramirez 10 Aug '18

10 Aug '18

*CFP* *Sites Queer: Technologies, Spaces and Otherness* *University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture, Río Piedras Campus* *Abstract Submission Deadline: August 31, 2018* *Conference Date: February 7-9, 2019* Much of queer theory, history, art and performance have been discussed from Anglo American and European perspectives. *Sites Queer* is an interdisciplinary three-day conference exploring the multiple ways in which LGBTQ+ spaces and identities get reconfigured, performed and contested through the technologies and spatial politics of diverse ethnic cultures. Although we welcome submissions from all cultural backgrounds, we are particularly interested in inviting research projects rooted in Latin American, Asian, Aboriginal and African cultures. >From within the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, *Sites Queer* will be a space to discuss, foreground and analyze divergent queer histories, narratives and spatial practices. Subsequently, playing off the word 'site' as a physical locale as well a digital space, the conference will problematize the ways the Internet, digital technologies, mobile apps and social networks are informing, changing, shaping or contesting queerness for ethnic minorities at urban and rural levels. The outcome of the conference will be to create a book proposal acting as a critical, cultural memory; a written and visual record; and a speculative, spatial cartography of queer spaces for ethnic minorities, drawing them out from their Otherness and situating them within contemporary sociopolitical debates. Potential themes and sub-themes of the conference include but are not limited to: *-Autoethnography, Autobiography and Performance* *-Non-normative Relationship Structures* *-Intimacy and Romance* *-Chem-sex* *-Digital Economies and Transactions* *-Distance and Proximity* *-Postcodes and Addresses* *-Urban Infrastructures* *-Ephemerality, Transcience and Permanence* *-Nighttime Culture and Economies* *-Migration* *-Bias and Marginalization* *-Looking for Others and Being Found* *-Politics of Space* *-Citizenship and Otherness* *-Tourism and Mobility* *-Activism and Resistance* *Sites Queer* is funded by Dr. Regner Ramos’s FIPI research grant at the University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture. We are inviting research papers, performances, workshop sessions, roundtable sessions and pre-constituted panels to participate. Please send 250-word abstracts and a 150-word biography to regner.ramos(a)upr.edu . In the case of group submissions, please provide biographies for each individual. *Submission Deadline: August 31, 2018* For more details: http://elsite.xyz/calendar/sites-queer We are delighted to have the following two keynote speakers at *Sites Queer* : Dr. Sharif Mowlabocus is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Digital Media, based within the School of Media, Film and Music at University of Sussex. His research focuses on gay and queer sexualities in media culture, and he has authored a variety of articles and books on the subject. Dr. Richard Miskolci is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at UFSCar and Adjunct coordinator in the area of Sociology/Social Sciences at CAPES. He researches contemporary uses of digital media, focusing on differences of sexuality, gender, race and ethnicity. His upcoming book is titled *Desejos digitais: uma análise sociológica da busca por parceiros online* (*Digital Desires: A Sociological Analysis of Online Partner Search*). We are also happy to have Lucas LaRochelle, founder of Queering The Map <https://queeringthemap.com>, at *Sites Queer *running a workshop. -- *Dr. Regner Ramos* PhD - The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL Assistant Professor - School of Architecture University of Puerto Rico Creative Director & Editor-in-Chief LOBBY Magazine Editor-in-Chief *in*forma Journal Editor/Writer Glass Magazine www.elsite.xyz Instagram: @regner.xyz <http://www.instagram.com/regner.xyz>

Social media legal and privacy issues exercise
by Gohar F. Khan 09 Aug '18

09 Aug '18

Hi, I am looking for ideas on interactive in-class exercise on social media legal and privacy issues for my undergrad students. Ideally, they should work in small groups to carry out the exercise. Any topic that fits within the broader scope of regal and/or privacy issues related to social media use/data will work. Normally, I would ask them to review a social media platform's privacy policy and report back on how they use your data. But this time I intend to do something different. Any suggestions, please? cross-border data access by law enforcement agencies
by Halefom Hailu 09 Aug '18

09 Aug '18

ARTICLE I am researching new legal and policy initiatives regarding cross-border data access by law enforcement agencies in Europe and beyond. I am aware of the U.S. CLOUD Act, the EU’s e-evidence proposal, and Council of Europe’s proposed additional protocol to the Budapest convention. I am looking for such initiatives at national, regional and international levels and can be proposed by any actor (government, private, civil society). I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestion.
