Below you will find information on how to apply for the different formats. ------------------------------------- CONFERENCE SCOPE ------------------------------------- The Symposium is an interdisciplinary venue that brings together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines to contribute to the definition and exploration of the societal challenges in Computational Social Science, especially around the topics of inequality and imbalance. We welcome submissions in the intersection of the social sciences and the computer sciences, including (a) new approaches for understanding social phenomena and addressing societal challenges, (b) improving methods for computational social science, (c) and understanding the influence of the Web and digital technologies on society. -------------------------------- DATASET CHALLENGE -------------------------------- Submission deadline: September 1, 2018 Submit via Easychair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 We provide links to three suggested datasets on the topic of political communication and ask participants to creatively and innovatively engage with these datasets. A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award. The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures). The full call can be found here: http://symposium.computationalsocialscience.eu/2018/#data -------------------------------- DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM -------------------------------- Submission deadline: September 1, 2018 Submit via Easychair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 Please submit a PDF file of up to approx. 1000 words with the following information: – an abstract of the PhD thesis topic including information about the research question, applied methods and the current state of progress – a short paragraph about the applicant’s biography – a paragraph on open questions that the applicant would want to discuss with experts in the field The full call can be found here: http://symposium.computationalsocialscience.eu/2018/#consortium -------------------------------- SCIENCE SLAM -------------------------------- Submission deadline: November 1, 2018 Submit via email: garcia(a)csh.ac.at<mailto:garcia@csh.ac.at> A Science Slam is an epic scientific event where scientists compete with short talks on their research. It's just like a poetry slam, but with science instead of poems. Slammers are completely free to do whatever they want on stage, everything is allowed including slides, games, the more creative, the better! The only two rules are: 1) The topic of the slam has to be related to data science / computational social science or to social media, online data or digital behavioral data, and 2) Presentations should not take more than 8 minutes. The EuroCSS Science Slam will take place in the evening of December 5th in Die Wohngemeinschaft (https://www.die-wohngemeinschaft.net/en/) To present, send an email to garcia(a)csh.ac.at<mailto:garcia@csh.ac.at> with a short proposal of your topic for the slam and we will contact you. We will choose the best slammer candidates, based on (i) the scientific quality, on (ii) the novelty of the topic, and on (iii) the potential for giving an engaging talk. -------------------------------- TRAVEL GRANTS -------------------------------- Submission deadline: September 1, 2018 Submit via email: css.eurosymposium(a)gmail.com<mailto:css.eurosymposium@gmail.com> Due to the generous funding by Volkswagen Foundation we are able to offer a limited number of travel grants to researchers whose submissions are accepted for the symposium (presenters of talks or posters at the main symposium, workshop or tutorial organizers, participants of doctoral consortium and dataset challenge). Friendly reminder: CFP Understanding the Social in a Digital Age
by Zoetanya Sujon 14 Aug '18

14 Aug '18

Just a friendly reminder that abstracts of no more than 300 words plus a short bio (no more than 100 words) are *due in two weeks on August 28th, 2019*. Please send abstracts to UnderstandingTheSocial(a)gmail.com. Apologies for cross-posting CFP: 'Understanding the Social in a Digital Age: An Interdisciplinary Conference in Media, Technology, and the Social'. The pervasiveness of social media has led to both the rise and erasure of ‘the social’. The social is increasingly evasive, at once found everywhere and nowhere. Social media are widely lauded for connecting people and enabling richer, more dynamic socialities yet many critique these processes as emptying out social connection in favour of data accumulation, self-promotion, and platform capitalism. Similarly, these new ways of experiencing, augmenting, and understanding the social are rife with their own socio-cultural and socio-economic biases, born out through designers and users, meaning not every user experiences these spaces and relates to these technologies in the same manner. It becomes apparent that ‘the social’ presumes a singular experience, when realities are far more diverse. Current research on social media draws in an interdisciplinary manner from a wide range of thinking on what the social means, and is increasingly challenging extant theories and conceptions of the social. This poses a number of questions for how we consider, define, and explore the social, and crucially what our responsibilities are as researchers and educators. This also poses a number of opportunities to work across disciplinary boundaries to explore and reframe our understandings of media, technology, and the social. *Keynotes will be given by Professor Nick Couldry, London School of Economics and Professor Gina Neff, Oxford Internet Institute.* This event aims to critically examine not only the meanings of the social in contemporary digital practices across cultures, but also challenges underlying epistemologies of the social in research and popular cultures. Papers may approach the topic from theoretical, conceptual, and/or empirical positions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Challenges of and negotiations around agency and structure - The relationship between technology, self, and society - Educational challenges and responsibilities in the digital age - Changing socialities in the face of platform capitalism, the sharing economy, the gig economy, the rise of mediation, & networked selves - The embedding and disembedding of socio-cultural resources online - Resistance and transgression on, in, with, and through technology - The role of designers, users, researchers and the public in the framing, conceptualisation, and representation of ‘the social’ online - Extant and emerging social structures in the digital age - Boundaries between online and offline social practices - Affordances and mediation of social practices - Alternative media and sub-altern communities - Technological mediation of public / private - Digital citizenships and the politics of belonging - Emerging technologies and digital futures This list is merely suggestive of the range of topics of interest to the organisers and is not in any way restrictive of possible interpretations of the theme. We encourage contributors to be imaginative in formulating ideas and paper proposals. Abstracts of no more than 300 words and a short bio of 100 words should be submitted via email by 28th August 2018. You will receive notification of the outcome of your submission by September 30. Submissions from early career researchers are highly encouraged. Final papers should be no longer than 8,000 words / 20 minutes. All those who submit final papers by January 7th will also be invited to submit to a special edition of an international peer-reviewed journal. *The event is free to attend and present, and will be hosted at the School of Education and Lifelong Learning and the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, on the 8th January 2019.* Key dates: Abstract submission: August 28th 2018 Notification of outcomes: September 30th 2018 Draft papers due: January 7th 2019 Conference: January 8th 2019, at UEA Organisers: Dr Zoetanya Sujon (University of Arts London) Dr Harry Dyer (University of East Anglia) Enquiries and abstract submission: UnderstandingTheSocial(a)gmail.com Full details here: https://sujonz.wordpress.com/2018/07/09/understanding-the-social-in-a-digit… Please follow us on Twitter: @SocialDigitalA2 #UnderstandingTheSocial -- 'You are marvellous. Creating a Thematic Group in Digital Sociology in ISA [Help Required]
by David Dueñas 14 Aug '18

14 Aug '18

Dear all, We are currently making the first steps to create a Thematic Group in Digital Sociology at the International Sociological Association, aiming to gather scholars and topics around our common field of interest. In order to fulfil the requirements of ISA, we will need to present a number of signatures of ISA members in good standing (those who paid their fee), from different continents, who want to support this proposal. If you are member of ISA and you are willing to sign with us, please join us at digital-sociology-ISA(a)googlegroups.com or contact me (david.duenas(a)gmail.com) In this google group we are already discussing the documents and future development of this Thematic Group, being a good occasion to get in touch with other scholars and to create something which fits on the needs of the sociological community. You are more than welcome J Best regards David Duenas-Cid _______________________________ Dr. David Dueñas-Cid Assistant Professor Kozminski University New Research on Digital Societies (NERDS) Jagiellonska 57/59 03-301 Warszawa (Poland) Researcher Tallinn University of Technology Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance Akadeemia tee 3 EE-12618 Tallinn (Estonia) Twitter: @attu_island Skype: david.duenascid E-mail: <mailto:dduenas@kozminski.edu.pl> dduenas(a)kozminski.edu.pl / <mailto:david.duenas@ttu.ee> david.duenas(a)ttu.ee

CfP: DATA, SECURITY, VALUES: VOCATIONS AND VISIONS OF DATA ANALYSIS
by Mareile Kaufmann 14 Aug '18

14 Aug '18

** Call for Papers - Please circulate widely** DATA, SECURITY, VALUES: VOCATIONS AND VISIONS OF DATA ANALYSIS 10.-11. December 2018 Peace Research Institute Oslo Data analysis is normative. Coding, programming and algorithmically interpreting data is always informed by the concepts, ideas, values and affordances of the technologies and people that engage with data. Even if the word data means "given", information becomes socially and politically imbued as soon as it is selected and categorized to make it available for analysis. Such insights are no longer only subject of academic critique, but the normativity of data analysis has by now become integrated into public discourses. In fact, the value of data has created a new market for moral entrepreneurs, who re-frame data analysis as a tool for moral engineering and security politics. At this conference we explore how values, ideas and concepts are not only necessarily embedded in data analysis, but also in what way they are productive and co-create society. Please join our discussion on the many vocations and visions of data analysis in the security domain: These can include overt media manipulation and disinformation, the active sensoring or removal of online contents, the workings of editing algorithms or retweet-robots, the promotion of state-sponsored narratives online, but also the normativity of approaches that seek to "uncover fake news", "fight attacks on the freedom of speech online" or "make the world a more secure place with online data". Together, we discuss the relationship between data analysis, ideas and values by looking at the workings of digital security technologies, data security policies or the security politics of data. The three confirmed keynote speakers are: Miguel Sicart, Associate Professor at the Center for Computer Game Research at IT University Copenhagen, "Playing Data: Understanding the Ludic in the Information Age" Katja de Vries, postdoctoral researcher in Law Science Technology & Society at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, "The coexistence of humans and algorithmic profiling machines" Susanne Krasmann, Professor at the Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences, (Criminology) Hamburg University, "The desire for truth - and the secret of algorithms" The conference will further include a roundtable discussion with representatives from the Norwegian Ministries on "Data & the everyday of security authorities". Please send your abstracts until the 21st of September to Mareile Kaufmann: markau(a)prio.no. The paper should be submitted in the first week of December.

Looking for Literature on Immersive Communication
by Urooj Raja 14 Aug '18

14 Aug '18

Dear Community, I am in the process of putting together my dissertation prospectus, and am looking for literature on immersive communication, particularly within the virtual reality space. In essence, I am looking for information on how immersive communication is operationalized, empirically. And if it appears to be more or less effective in generating user interest about the content being transmitted versus static communication. I would appreciate any and all leads. Thank you all for your time. Best, Urooj *Urooj Raja* PhD Student NSF Graduate Research Fellow (GRFP) Department of Environmental Studies University of Colorado | Boulder
