secure team collaboration software?
by Charles M. Ess 20 Feb '18

20 Feb '18

(At the risk of taxing the patience of the list ...) Dear AoIRists, While I've sent an inquiry along these lines to a few colleagues with superb expertise in these matters, I thought it might not hurt to also interrogate the wisdom and experience of this particular crowd. One of our thoughts / hopes for the ethics working group is to make use of something like a secure wiki or hypertext / collaborative environment. The idea is to have one or two introductory / summary / overview documents that can then link to modules - overview articles on more specific topics, resource lists, case studies, etc. In the first stage, this needs to be (relatively) secure ("secure" being relative these days) - i.e., with access for the Working Group members who are working on various components. At a second stage, however, the thought is to make it available to the AoIR research community for further refinement, contribution, etc. Ideally, finally, a relatively polished version would then be made available to more or less anyone "out there" looking for resources in internet research ethics. A first thought, of course, is a wiki or wikipedia-like service. But some of you may recall that a very nice wiki established by the earlier ethics working group was hacked and much good work was lost, most unfortunately. So we're looking for a working space at least comparatively less liable to such attacks. Many of us have tinkered with collaboration via Google docs, Slack, and others. But I also know of more than one university, at least in this part of the world, that is insisting on such collaborations taking place within university-based installations of Microsoft Teams, for example. More secure, yes - but not as hyper-texty as we would like, so far as I can tell - and not sure how it would work to invite others outside the university? I could easily be missing something, and if so, please don't hesitate to let me know. And/or: any further suggestions for a really secure collaborative environment, with rich hypermedia functionalities, and the flexibility to move through at least the first two stages of collaboration, i.e., within the Ethics Working Group and then the AoIR community at large? A thousand thanks in advance, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no

software for recording search results?
by Charles M. Ess 20 Feb '18

20 Feb '18

Dear AoIR-ists, A Master's student is comparing search results on ca. 120 key search terms in two different national locations. The student is building on a considerable body of often quite sophisticated analyses along these lines - but by people with access to programmers and/or who can build the code they want / need themselves. What the student wants to do is simply record the first, e.g., 10 or 20 hits in response to a given key search term. Beyond taking screen shots and pushing the results into a spreadsheet for (relatively simple) analysis - does anyone have recommendations for available software that might be more directly helpful with this sort of data collection and recording? Will look forward to any advice and suggestions you can offer - many thanks in advance, - charles -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no

CfP - Digital Economy: Ubercapitalism or Post-Capitalism? Conference, London, 11 May 2018
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 20 Feb '18

20 Feb '18

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to announce the CfP for the Digital Economy conference to be hosted by the Centre for Digital Culture in London on 11 May 2018. The purpose of the conference is to explore the consequences of digital technology for the economy and politics and whether we are heading towards an even more exploitative capitalism or towards a more just economic system. Abstract below Submit your abstract via Easychair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=digitalcapitalism201 Deadline: 7 March 2018 Hope to see many of you there! Best Regards, Paolo <https://easychair.org/cfp/topic.cgi?tid=677470;a=17555146> The Digital Economy: Ubercapitalism or Post-Capitalism? King's College London, 11 May 2018 This international conference aims at exploring the digital economy, understood as the new forms of production, work, consumption, distribution, and finance ushered in by the diffusion of digital technology. From the way we work, to the way we consume and pay for products and services, to the rise of new platforms for consumption and collaboration, the economic field is being revolutionised by digital media. Yet, the jury is still out on whether these changes point to an even more exploitative or rather towards an alternative and fairer economic model. The conference will explore these processes of transformation of the economy and their relationship with culture and society focusing on a number of specific phenomena that have been the object of intense debate in recent years and questioning the suitability of future trends and innovations: automation and its positive and negative repercussions on working conditions; crypto-currencies and whether they are freeing us from state control or reproducing neoliberal dynamics; universal basic income as a possible new form of welfare befitting the transformation of the economy in a digital era; the rise of digital giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon and the consequences of their oligopolistic position in the market; the new models of value formation connected to data mining and analytics; and many more. We invite participants from various disciplines and streams of research including media studies, sociology, economics, consumer research, management, information and computer science. Together, we will address a set of recurring questions. How, for example, is digital technology restructuring the economy? Are crypto-currencies really alternative to established financial regimes or are they rather at the very forefront of new forms of financial speculation? How do managerial practices evolve with the aid of digital resources? How do transformations in the mobile environment correlate to changes in the field of logistics? What are the features of the new forms of precarisation/casualisation of work that are described as “gig economy”? How does digital technology serve to enforce new forms of surveillance and measurement in the workplace? Can technological advancement promote alternative economic models as implied by references to terms such as “big data socialism” or “luxury communism”? Can digital media serve the construction of new forms of workers’ representation and trade-unionism? The conference will comprise two plenary sessions and 4 breakout panels, and will host internationally acclaimed scholars as keynote speakers. The conference will take place on Friday, 11 May 2018. Abstract of 250 words are due by 7 March 2018. Submission lin: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=digitalcapitalism201 Abstracts should be 250 words maximum, and include the author(s) name and position, and a short title. Acceptance notices will be given on 20 March 2018 Dr Paolo Gerbaudo, Senior Lecturer in Digital Culture and Society, Department of Digital Humanities Director of the Centre for Digital Culture King's College London, Room S3.10, Strand Building, 3rd Floor, Strand London WC2, England Phone: +44 (0)20 78481576

2nd CfP: CHIIR 2018 Workshop on Barriers to Interactive IR Resources Re-use
by Toine Bogers 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

Second Call for Participation: BIIRRR 2018 ************************************************************************* CHIIR 2018 Workshop on Barriers to Interactive IR Resources Re-use Thursday, March 15 2018, 9:00-17:00 http://biirrr2018.aau.dk ************************************************************************* The goal of the BIIRRR 2018 workshop is to serve as a starting point for a community-driven effort to design and implement a platform for the collection, organization, maintenance, and sharing of resources for interactive information retrieval (IIR) experimentation. Examples include search tasks, experimental protocols, questionnaire designs, reporting standards, evaluation procedures, data collections, and the search interaction data produced in such experiments. While the idea of collecting such resources in a central location is perhaps not a new one, the effort required in designing, implementing, and maintaining such a platform can only be borne by the community as a collective effort. Please join us in a full-day workshop to brainstorm about the shape this iRepository should take. If you yourself have conducted interactive IR experiments, we would love to hear about your experiences too! Please fill out our survey at http://bit.ly/BIIRRR-survey, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes of your time! The result of the survey will help us prepare the workshop and get an overview of the current state of re-use of IIR resources. One of the goals of the workshop is to produce a set of requirements and activities in order to develop an iRepository, which the organizers commit to publishing as a short report right after the workshop. After this immediate follow-up, we then plan further documented dissemination of the workshop outcomes but also envisage a more extensive activity, such as a Dagstuhl-style seminar, which will provide the time to discuss the requirements and solutions in more detail. ************************************************************************* Tentative program: -Introduction of workshop purpose, goals and planned activities -2 keynotes: ---Nils Pharo, Oslo Metropolitan University: The importance and challenges for standardization in IIR Evaluation - Basis for an iRepository ---Luanne Freund, University of British Columbia: Previous experiences at IIR evaluation campaigns: INEX, TREC, CLEF, RepAST -2 break-out sessions: ---Viewpoints on standardization: which components of IIR experiments could be re-used? ---Requirements for IIR reuse: how can documentation and archiving be standardized? ************************************************************************* BIIRRR 2018 Workshop homepage: http://toinebogers.com/biirrr2018 Registration for BIIRR 2018 Workshop: http://sigir.org/chiir2018 Contact the organizers: biirrr(a)googlegroups.com

CFP: PRESENCE 2018 submission deadline extended to March 1
by Matthew Lombard 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

CALL FOR PAPERS PRESENCE 2018 18th conference of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) Prague, Czech Republic May 21-22, 2018 (optional demonstrations and guided sightseeing events May 20) https://ispr.info/call-presence-2018 Conference theme: Challenges ---> Submission deadline (extended): MARCH 1, 2018 <--- OVERVIEW Telepresence, often shortened to presence, is a state or perception in which we overlook or misconstrue the role of technology and feel present in the environments and/or connected to the people or things we experience via technology. It´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences and application areas. Following a series of 17 successful Presence conference events (http://ispr.info/presence-conferences/previous-conferences/) PRESENCE 2018 will retain the single-track format and enjoyable social environment of previous conferences while featuring an expanded variety of paper and poster sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, hands-on demonstrations of presence applications/services/projects, and informal discussion, networking and fun. Members of both academic and industry communities are welcome. At the end of the first day, all attendees are invited to a social dinner; we also hope you´ll join us for all or part of a day of demonstration visits and guided sightseeing on May 20 (the day before the conference). The registration cost is $140, with a discounted student cost of $100. The fee includes lunches on both days, coffee and snacks during breaks, and the social dinner. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The term presence has many formal and informal meanings but is used by a growing interdisciplinary scholarly community to refer to experiences in which technology is overlooked or misconstrued in some way during a mediated experience. Long a focus of those who study virtual reality and environments, it´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences. For example, presence occurs when we get "lost" in the world of a novel, TV show, movie, video game or theme park ride; we´re convinced by the realism of paintings or graphic designs; we treat our cars, computers or other machines as if they have personalities of their own, and we feel like we´re "with" a person we talk to on the phone or in a video conference. The presence research community has been working to identify causes, characteristics and consequences of diverse presence experiences. The consequences identified so far - including arousal/relaxation, empathy, enjoyment, persuasion and more - make clear the importance and power of presence to improve communication across a wide variety of contexts and applications of interest to scholars and those who create media technologies and content. Presence as a concept and set of phenomena is related to the work being done in nearly every field and business sector from art to zoology, with particularly direct applications in business, education, entertainment and health. The 4000+ posts in ISPR Presence News (http://ispr.info/posts) and thousands more on its predecessor, the presence-l listserv (listserv.temple.edu/archives/presence-l.html) along with the Presence Bibliography on the ISPR website (http://ispr.info) illustrate the breadth of presence applications, and the breadth, depth and value of presence scholarship. The objectives of the conference are to deepen and update the knowledge of those already familiar with presence and introduce new scholars and practitioners to the centrality, pervasiveness, and value of presence phenomena, theory and research. The overarching goal is to help integrate and increase collaborative scholarship on presence. SUBMISSIONS Topics We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of presence phenomena and applications in any/every aspect of life. Topics of interest include (but are absolutely not limited to): * Presence theory * Measures of presence * Presence and emotion * Presence and education * Presence and social interaction * Gender and Presence * Neuroscience approaches to Presence * Presence in gaming and entertainment * Philosophical perspectives on presence * Ethics of presence * Presence technologies and applications (e.g. in business, arts, medicine and therapy) * The future of presence research Theme: Challenges Researchers, scholars, technology designers and users, and citizens all face challenges related to presence. We invite submission in all of the categories below that identify, consider and ideally propose solutions to the challenges people in any or all of these groups face now or will face in the future. Data-based projects, concept and theory building work as well as personal (first person) reflections are encouraged. FULL DETAILS Please see the full call for papers at: https://ispr.info/call-presence-2018 -- Matthew Lombard, Ph.D. Temple University Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA lombard(a)temple.edu http://matthewlombard.com

Montreal roundtable ideas
by Holly Kruse 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

I'm considering proposing a roundtable for AoIR in Montreal. because there are a couple of things that I would enjoy hearing smart people (and me, I suppose) discuss. The two possibilities I'm considering are, 1) histories of gendering and racing online (and/or proto-online) technologies, and 2) how discourses of mostly non-squee, mostly non-cat animals function online. If anyone would be interested in either of these, please email me at holly.kruse(a)gmail.com. Holly

Seeking a short introduction text on technological determinism vs. SCOT
by Carmel Vaisman 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

Dear fellows, I have been struggling with the task of finding a simple short text for undergraduates that introduces the approaches of technological determinism (including utopia and dystopia) versus social construction of technology. Since the theoretical terrain has since been enriched with actor network theories and post phenomenology and so forth, it has become very hard to find a text that doesn't complicate this basic framework which fits a sophomore introductory level course. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Carmel Vaisman, PhD. Book announcement: Archaeologies of Touch: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing
by Parisi, David P 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

(apologies for cross-posting) Hello everyone, I'm very pleased to announce the publication of my book Archaeologies of Touch: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing (University of Minnesota Press, 2018). I hope that it will be of interest to members of this list-its release follows closely on the heels of the New Media & Society issue that Mark Paterson, Jason Archer, and I coedited on Haptic Media Studies (link in signature). The book sets the stage for the growing incorporation of haptics into new computer interfaces by providing a historical framework for their emergence and development, beginning way back with early experiments on electricity in the 1740s, continuing into nineteenth century psychophysics research and twentieth century cybernetics, then concluding with a discussion of haptics in touchscreens and virtual reality. It intersects with conversations about human-machine communication, sensory substitution, mobile communication, virtual reality, and technologies of perception. ---- ARCHAEOLOGIES OF TOUCH: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing David Parisi offers the first full history of new computing technologies known as haptic interfaces-which use electricity, vibration, and force feedback to stimulate the sense of touch-showing how the efforts of scientists and engineers over the past 300 years have gradually remade and redefined our sense of touch. Archaeologies of Touch offers a timely and provocative engagement with the long history of touch technology that helps us confront and question the power relations underpinning the project of giving touch its own set of technical media.
