Data & Society is seeking a Director of Research
by danah boyd 15 Feb '18

15 Feb '18

In 2013, I started Data & Society as an experiment. I imagined a research institute and a think/do tank all in one, bringing together researchers and practitioners and misfit toys. This crazy endeavor has worked better than I ever imagined. We’re now in the process of building the structures needed to make it a more sustainable organization. We’ve brought in a phenomenal executive director (Janet Haven) who understands the civil society and tech worlds deeply. And now we need a director of research who can work with me to create/build out our research strategy, mentor/manage researchers, and otherwise help support the development of important, rigorous, and impactful research. This is a super important hire for the future of D&S. I expect that the right person will be mid or late career and have extensive experience doing qualitative research and playing a leadership role in research environments (either academic or not). The call is online at https://datasociety.net/blog/2018/02/09/now-hiring-director-of-research/ <https://datasociety.net/blog/2018/02/09/now-hiring-director-of-research/> and below. Please help me find this special, special person. Feel free to forward as appropriate. danah Director of Research Job Description pdf: https://datasociety.net/pubs/ds/DoR_JD_DataSociety.pdf For questions, email jobs(a)datasociety.net Data & Society advances public understanding of the social and cultural implications of data-centric technologies and automation. We conduct interdisciplinary research and build a field of actors to ensure that knowledge guides development and governance of technology. We are working towards a future in which the values that shape technology should be visible and intentionally chosen with respect for human dignity. Data & Society is looking for an exceptional candidate to lead our growing, interdisciplinary Research Team as the Director of Research (DoR). The DoR is a new, senior, and central role at Data & Society. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the power of evidence and research to drive impact. They will be an accomplished scholar and a dedicated academic mentor, with deep team management experience. Data & Society’s DoR will bring their own disciplinary and topical expertise to the team, but will be capable and comfortable developing and supporting research across a range of themes, disciplines, and topics. This crucial role at Data & Society will work closely with danah boyd, Founder and President, to envision, articulate, and manage toward a broader research vision. The DoR will be responsible for ensuring the rigor, quality, and value of our research outputs, and for strengthening the research culture at the organization. They will also be encouraged to maintain and build their own research agenda and publishing practice, and to build or expand a profile as a public intellectual in their own right. Responsibilities Research: - Develop and implement overall research strategy for the organization, working closely with Founder/President, Executive Director, and research-oriented advisors, with an eye to impact on evolving field debates. - Ensure quality of Data & Society research outputs, including implementing a rigorous and transparent review process that includes a range of scholars. - Maintain an active profile as a researcher and scholar. Management: - Serve as the senior leader of our in-house research team of approximately 25 people, including initiative leads, researchers, research analysts, and post-doctoral scholars. - Directly supervise research initiative leads to develop and implement research strategy within thematic verticals. - Collaborate with Managing Director of Research and other directors and managers at Data & Society on finance/budget oversight, administration, human resources, communications, programs, and publishing. - Serve on the Managers’ Team at Data & Society, representing research culture and concerns within organizational leadership. - Share in fundraising and funder relations responsibilities for the Research Team with Executive Director, Founder/President, and individual researchers. Mentorship: - Build the research culture at Data & Society. With support from the Managing Director of Research, the DoR will lead the development of policies, norms, best practices, and research infrastructure geared to produce rigorous, frame-breaking, and timely research products. - Mentor D&S scholars, both directly and by developing mentorship norms and structures that leverage the broader Data & Society network. - Incorporate faculty fellows into the research team for discrete periods of time. - With an eye to fieldbuilding, enhance and sustain the network of researchers whom we work with in academia and beyond. Public outreach: - Represent Data & Society’s work externally to media, funders, civil society, industry, and government as needed. - With support from other D&S teams and resources, ensure that researchers are able to represent their work in multiple venues and to multiple audiences. Qualifications - PhD in the social sciences or related field and experience with qualitative sociotechnical research; - 10+ years academic or research work experience post-PhD; - Extensive academic and non-academic publication history; - Extensive professional experience in university or institute research environments; - Experience in research team building and management; - Public profile and ability to connect with non-academic audiences via writing and speaking; - Expertise in the social and cultural implications of data-centric and automated technologies; - Deep understanding of the public and closed-door debates occurring in media, government, the technology industry, and civil society around the issues raised by data-centric and automated technologies, and a clear set of ideas of the ways in which research can influence and shape those decision-making venues; - Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience managing down, laterally, and up for successful outcomes; - Comfort with a fast-paced work environment at a young and rapidly evolving organization. Practical considerations 1. This is not a remote position; you must work full time from the Data & Society office in the Flatiron section of New York City, however this role does allow for some flexible scheduling and telecommuting; 2. Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society Accepting Apps for Summer 2018 Internships
by Rebecca Tabasky 15 Feb '18

15 Feb '18

Hello! The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is accepting applications from students for our [1]summer 2018 internship program. More information is below - please feel welcome to reach out with questions, and please share with students you think may have interest! Many thanks, and all best, Becca Tabasky Manager of Community Programs Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University ------ Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society 2018 Summer Internship Program Application deadline for all students for summer 2018 is Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET Information about the summer program and links to the application procedures can be found below and at [2]http://brk.mn/summer About the Program Each summer the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University swings open the doors of our vibrant yellow house to welcome a group of talented and curious students as full-time interns - [3]Berkterns! - who are passionate about the promise of the Internet. Finding connected and complementary research inquiries among their diverse backgrounds, students represent all levels of study, are being trained in disciplines across the board, and come from universities all over the world to tackle issues related to the core of the Center’s research agenda. Summer interns jump head first into the swirl of the Berkman Klein universe, where they are deeply and substantively involved in our research projects and efforts. Becoming invaluable contributors to the Center’s operation and success, interns conduct collaborative and independent research under the guidance of Berkman Klein staff, fellows, and faculty. Specific roles, tasks, and experiences vary depending on Center needs and interns' skills; a select list of expected opportunities for this coming summer is below. Typically, the workload of each intern is primarily based under one project or suite of projects, with encouragement and flexibility to get involved in additional projects across the Center. In addition to joining [4]research teams, summer interns participate in special lectures with Berkman Klein Center faculty and fellows, engage each other through community experiences like weekly interns discussion hours, and attend Center-wide events and gatherings with members of the wider Berkman Klein community. As well, each year interns establish new channels for fun and learning, such as [5]organizing debates and pub quizzes; establishing reading groups and book clubs; [6]producing podcasts and [7]videos; taking on the Mystic lakes and Brooklyn Boulders; and hosting potlucks, cook-offs, and BBQs (fortunately for us, people share). The word "awesome" has been thrown around to describe our internships, but don't take our word for it. Get a behind the scenes look at what it's like to be a summer intern at the Center through the [8]Summer Snapshot 2017 developed by summer 2017 Berktern Tym Yee; there you'll hear from interns about their experiences, projects, and out-of-the office explorations! And an evergreen-in-spirit quote from former intern Zachary McCune in 2008 continues to sparkle (even as the rock band reference dates it): "it has been an enchanting summer working at the berkman center for internet & society. everyday, i get to hang out with some of the most brilliant people on the planet. we talk, we write (emails), we blog, we laugh, we play rock band. and when things need to get done, we stay late hyped on free coffee and leftover food. it is a distinct honor to be considered a peer among such excellent people. and i am not just talking about the fellows, staff, and faculty, though they are all outstanding. no, i mean my peers as in my fellow interns, who are almost definitely the ripening next generation of changemakers." Select Expected Summer 2018 Opportunities A list of projects and research areas interns will engage may be found [9]here. Time Commitment The summer 2018 program will run from Monday, June 4, 2018 through Friday, August 10, 2018. Summer internships are full time positions (35 hours/week). Payment Interns are paid $11.50 an hour, with the exception of certain opportunities for law students who receive summer public interest funds (more about these specific cases at the link for law students below). No other benefits are provided, and interns must make their own housing, insurance, and transportation arrangements. Commitment to Diversity The work and well-being of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society are profoundly strengthened by the diversity of our network and our differences in background, culture, experience, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, ability, and much more. We actively seek and welcome people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, persons with disabilities, and people at intersections of these identities, from across the spectrum of disciplines and methods. Eligibility * Internships are open to students enrolled across the full spectrum of disciplines. * Internships are open to students at different levels of academic study including those in bachelor’s, master’s, law, and Ph.D programs. We also welcome applications from recent graduates and those in between academic programs. * Summer interns do not need to be U.S. residents or in school in the U.S.; indeed, we encourage international students to apply. * Selected interns must be authorized to be employed in the United States during the summer. The Berkman Klein Center works with the Harvard International Office (HIO) to sponsor J-1 Student Intern Visas, which permit employment, for selected summer interns who meet the visa requirements. More information can be found on the HIO website at [10]http://hio.harvard.edu/j-student-intern-visa. * Summer interns do not need an existing affiliation with Harvard University. To Apply We know what you're thinking. Yes please. I want that. That sounds magical. Did I mention that I have [11]incredible dance moves? Here's what you should do... * Law students: please find application instructions and important additional information [12]here. * Students from disciplines other than law: please find more information and application instructions [13]here. by Weller, Katrin 14 Feb '18

14 Feb '18

Dear colleagues, as part of the STI Conference 2018 (http://sti2018.cwts.nl) we will be organizing a special track on the "Challenges of Social Media Data for Bibliometrics" (#sti18challenge). This specialized track focuses on the ongoing challenges for using data from social media platforms and from third party aggregators as sources for research metrics and scientometric indicators. These challenges include but are not limited to: --> platform-based restrictions in accessing social media data and potential biases resulting from limited access (also: biases introduced by data aggregators) --> black boxes, hidden algorithms, and lack of information about collection processes and context affecting the use of social media data and data aggregators -->lack of understanding of user activities (e.g. motivations to retweet, like, share) and user groups in academic contexts -->incomplete data (e.g. due to missing DOIs or identifiers not tracked by aggregators) and noise (e.g.due to bot-activity) We invite the following types of submissions: a) original research studying the quality of social media data and data aggregators for measuring scholarly communication b) short (hands-on) introductions and best practices for using data from one or more specific social media platforms or aggregators. Please submit your work as short papers (max 3,000 words) until April 1, 2018. See http://sti2018.cwts.nl/submissions for templates, EasyChair access and additional submission information. Yahoo trustworthiness [lamentation]
by Frantisek Sudzina 13 Feb '18

13 Feb '18

In my opinion, at this moment, Canadian Pharmacies can compete with Yahoo in terms on trustworthiness. I believe I am not the only one to whom Yahoo shows an ad ---------------------------------------------- Sponsored Banyan Hill Better Than Bitcoin A new technology is set to rocket up to 8,000% ---------------------------------------------- as high as the second regular link. Overall, at least five "similar" adds appear each time I visit yahoo.com I can't decide, if a) Yahoo is so desperate to earn money it shows such ads b) Yahoo is low on cash, so they create these ads in order to compile and to sell to health insurances a list of stupid people as potential clients for dementia treatment c) a university ethics review committee approved a scientific project with one or more research objectives and the reason I see it is completely scientific or d) it's a Canadian joke and the link leads to a page saying "get a job". Maybe there is somebody bored here who could investigate it. TransMissions CfP: Film and Media: Through and Beyond the Senses
by Magdalena Zdrodowska 13 Feb '18

13 Feb '18

Dear All, TransMissions: Journal of Film and Media Studies published Call for Papers for its' new issue devoted to relations between body, senses and film and media perception and production. Please find CfP on our website (http://transmissions.edu.pl/call-for-papers/) and below. Best Regards, Magda Zdrodowska ************************************************************ ****************************************************** ***************************************** *Call for Papers for 2018 vol.3, issue 1 * *Film and Media: Through and Beyond the Senses* *Editors: Małgorzata Radkiewicz, Marta Stańczyk (Jagiellonian University, Poland) * Both theory and practice of film and media deal with such issues as perception, interaction, and involvement through human body and senses. Contemporary theory has turned toward embodiment as a major “figure of thought” and as the main mode of cognition. However, approaching visual culture and its various devices (analogue, electronic, digital ones) only through senses may not be sufficient in the era of post-humanity and dynamic technological development. Moreover, hybridization and specialization of media bring up questions and challenges that make us go beyond human senses and their limitations. There are new possibilities of creation and usage of film and media, as well as of analysis and interpretations, in terms of new materialism, affects, ecology etc. The new phenomena of media communication must be followed by both analytical and critical theoretical reflections that will address complex issues of relations between media and (non)human sensual organs. The annual NECS conference that took place in June 2017 addressed the topic: Sensibility and the Senses. Media, Bodies, Practices. The program included diverse perspectives and subjects of research, showing different attitudes and exploring various fields of studies. Many of them still need to be explored and examined in detail, which poses a huge challenge for researchers dealing with film and various media. Preparing the next issue of “TransMissions”, we invite you to submit papers that might examine such topics as: - Theoretical approaches to sensual perception and sensory experience of film and media; - The relation between body and technologies; - Human and nonhuman aspects of hybrid media; - An immersion and a realist theory (hyper cinema, AR, VR, 3D, etc.); - Sensing the difference – creating “minor cinema” through new epistemologies; - Haptic media and hardwired body – a connection between senses and technology; - The anthropology of cinema – creating the place for experience; - Viewer- and user-centered approaches: (post)phenomenology, affects, neuro-cinema, - The logic of H+ – an advancement or a replacement; - The regimes of senses – the cultural determination of sensorium. - The prosthesis as a medium We are open to suggestions from researchers as to their own topics within the subject matter. We expect up to 45000 characters articles to be sent to *magda.zdrodowska(a)uj.edu.pl <magda.zdrodowska(a)uj.edu.pl>* till *31 March 2018*. *Publication schedule:* Submission of articles:* 31 March 2018* Notification of paper acceptance: 30 May 2018 Publication: * 15 July 2018*

Dear Friends and Colleagues, The Engagement Lab at Emerson College is accepting applications for our Master of Arts degree program Civic Media: Art and Practice (CMAP) for fall 2018. The priority deadline to apply is March 1st, 2018. After this date, we’ll start accepting students on a rolling basis and awarding scholarships for the program. We’re seeking interdisciplinary minded students and recent graduates who are scholars, entrepreneurs, socially engaged artists, civic leaders, and creative technologists to apply. We would love your help reaching anyone who is looking to refine their skills and position themselves more strongly in the field of civic media. The core experience and outcomes of the 12-month CMAP program are centered around thesis projects. These creative works highlight the relationship of media, art, and practice and explore a wide range of approaches to the art & design of civic media, including participatory digital campaigns, mobile apps, public art installations, interactive curriculums, and virtual platforms. These projects bring to life the theories and practices that CMAP students explore in coursework throughout the year. Alumni of CMAP are well positioned for the growing field of scholarship and applied work in civic media, including employment opportunities in government, community media, public media, non-governmental organizations, digital agencies, and cultural organizations. Past graduates of CMAP currently work in various job sectors and organizations where they apply the skills and knowledge gained from the program, including the Obama Foundation, Global Family Research Project, Harvard Kennedy School, and more. You can learn more about CMAP here: <https://elab.emerson.edu/programs/cmap/> https://elab.emerson.edu/cmap, and more about the work we do at the Engagement Lab at Emerson College here: https://elab.emerson.edu/about. Accepted Students day will be held on April 28th, 2018. If you know someone who would be interested in CMAP, please share this email and ask them to reach out to paul_mihailidis(a)emerson.edu<mailto:paul_mihailidis@emerson.edu> for more information or to schedule a meeting to talk further.
