I find that it is a common matter of interest for students when they are considering research projects, but in practice getting data is difficult given that the people who catfish are by definition hidden and not likely to reveal themselves. Video research into classroom use of collaborative VR/virtual worlds - Coding procedure and employing a research assistant
by Lee, Mark 11 Feb '18

11 Feb '18

Dear all, My colleagues and I are looking to employ a research assistant to conduct some analysis of video that has been gathered as part of classroom trials of a collaborative VR educational game. In particular, we have several hours’ worth of footage of the physical classroom during the course of the activity, as well as of the virtual environment from the teacher’s point of view. We would like to analyze that data and also correlate it with log-file (and possibly also additional video recordings) of student actions/interactions that took place in-world, with a view to better understanding the collaborative processes and outcomes arising from the activity across both within and across the physical and virtual modalities. In terms of the level of coding detail, in addition to spoken dialogue (in the classroom—there was no in-world voice), I would also like to capture simple body language: namely gestures, body positioning/orientation, and gaze. There are no facial expressions involved as the participants were all wearing head-mounted VR devices that obscured their faces; however, the game was responsive to where their head was facing, and they had motion controllers that allowed their hand gestures (e.g., pointing, waving at other avatars) to be represented in-world. If you have experience with this type of research, I would greatly appreciate your insight into the following: 1. How do you typically go about coding the video data? Do you transcribe the data into textual form for coding, or do you use a software package allowing you to directly mark up/annotate the video timeline? I have seen both approaches used, but would like to get a sense of which is more common/preferred. 2. Given the desired level of coding detail as described above, what would be your estimation in terms of the number of hours it would take a graduate student or other research assistant to code each hour of video footage (counting the contemporaneous classroom and in-world footage separately)? 3. Do you know of a graduate student or other similarly qualified individual who has experience with this type of task, and who might be interested in this as a (paid) opportunity? Many thanks in advance! Kind regards, Mark Mark J. W. Texifter News Digest

Bot Project Update In early January we advertised on the AoIR listserve for coders. More than 50 people applied (in just 90 minutes) and we offered work to ten. A small group of coders ultimately began exploring the bot problem in Twitter data. What resulted is a work in progress. It is intended to be a collaborative resource for anyone interested in the challenge that bots pose to academic research, democracy, civil society, data-driven journalism, and any other realm of life where bots are causing issues. We invite your comments about the project. http://bit.ly/2BNO67Z New Paper of Note Many DiscoverText studies feature Twitter data. It was nice to see an ambitious new coding project emerge using Reddit data. Please have a close look at the methods details here as they are illustrative of the collaborative challenges when labeling any text data. http://bit.ly/2H1FJoC CoderRank Conference Paper For the first time in several years, we have written our own conference paper about the core collaborative annotation methods that underly our approach to humans and machines learning together. You can read it here and we welcome comments. http://bit.ly/2EQNmNS Important New Paper on the Twitter APIs Rebekah Tromble and Daniela Stockmann have a superb new paper out shedding light into the dark corners of the Twitter Search and Streaming APIs. This is an absolute must read paper for anyone who uses Twitter data in academic research. They note: "List count, verified, hashtag count, and reply are statistically significant and positively correlated with the likelihood of Search API capture." http://bit.ly/2nVtXTS Gnip Twitter Metadata Dictionary We get this question in many forms: what do the labels in Gnip Twitter metadata mean? As one of the original group of Gnip Twitter data vendors, we have witnessed the amazing evolution of this data. Sometimes our DiscoverText users are looking to create a filtering “rule” to apply against the realtime Gnip PowerTrack. Other times, they have used Sifter to collect historical Twitter data and they are trying to interpret the metadata payload that includes field names like “twitter quoted status actor followers count.” http://bit.ly/2nTurKb Free Web Training Sessions If you would like to schedule a 30-minute DiscoverText web briefing, we have a number of openings over the remainder of February. Schedule a meeting here. https://calendly.com/discovertext/discovertext-web-briefing Campus Visits Like other small business owners with academic software solutions, I make regular visits to universities to offer free methods workshops. Attendees get a sponsored multi-user account for 6 months at no cost. The methods are solid, interdisciplinary innovations that will change the way you think about the role of human coders and machine-learning. Please send an email to info(a)texifter.com if your librarians at your university would like to host a cost-free event. If there is anything we can do to help with your text analytics needs, just let us know. There are a number of new features emerging in the software every month. Thanks, ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W. by Shira Rivnai 10 Feb '18

10 Feb '18

Hi everyone, I'd be pleased to receive some of your good advice. Next semester, I am teaching an undergraduate course on social media and power dynamics. I would be grateful if you could share some 'must read' articles that were published in the field last year. In addition, I would be also happy for suggestions of film segments or animated videos illustrating aspects related to the field, e.g. journalism, algorithms, social action etc. Thank you, -- *Shira Rivnai-Bahir* Ph.D. Candidate Department of Sociology and Anthropology Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Israel shira.rivnai(a)mail.huji.ac.il +972-549980612
