CFP EASST2018: "Data Worlds? Public Imagination and Public Experimentation with Data Infrastructures"
by Gray, Jonathan 05 Jan '18

05 Jan '18

Hi all, Noortje Marres, Carolin Gerlitz, Tommaso Venturini, myself and other colleagues associated with the Public Data Lab are welcoming proposals for a panel on “Data Worlds? Public Imagination and Public Experimentation with Data Infrastructures” at EASST 2018 (“Meetings: Making Science, Technology and Society Together”), 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK. The deadline is midnight CET on 14th February 2018. The full text of the call is copied below, and also available at the following URL: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6260 Please do share with friends and colleagues who might be interested! Jonathan Jonathan Gray | jonathangray.org<http://jonathangray.org/> | @jwyg<http://twitter.com/jwyg> Lecturer in Critical Infrastructure Studies Department of Digital Humanities King’s College London # Data Worlds? Public Imagination and Public Experimentation with Data Infrastructures ## Convenors - Jonathan Gray (King’s College London) - Noortje Marres (University of Warwick) - Carolin Gerlitz (University of Siegen) - Tommaso Venturini (École Normale Supérieure Lyon) ## Short abstract How do data infrastructures distribute participation across society and culture? Do they participate in world-making, and if so how? Could they be utilised not just to close discussions, but also to open up public debate, imagination and experimentation? ## Long abstract This panel is about the world-making capacities of emerging data infrastructures – including their epistemic, social and political possibilities and limitations. It examines how emerging data infrastructures may distribute and redistribute participation in knowledge and world-making across society and culture – from the platform data of big technology companies to open data from public institutions, citizen data, sensor data and associated forms of journalism and activism. How are digital technologies entangled with social practices of classifying, counting, reasoning, narrating and making decisions? Rather than just extending the reach of certain pre-authorised ways of knowing, seeing and dealing with things, how might digital technologies support more substantive forms of interactivity and participation in order to open up public conversations, imagination and experimentation about how data is made and put to work? One of the key strengths of research methods and design approaches developed across STS, participatory design and digital social research has always been their experimentality – the ways in which they seek to combine knowing and doing – representing and intervening in social life – in potentially new, creative ways. This session asks: What distinctive forms of engagement with data infrastructures do these methods and approaches enable, and what is their capacity to contribute to data world-making? This panel organised by the Public Data Lab (http://publicdatalab.org<http://publicdatalab.org/>) will explore the capacity of STS, design and digital methods to take on the challenges outlined above, with the aim of identifying priorities for exploring and intervening around emerging data infrastructures today. Call for Papers: PRESENCE 2018
by Matthew Lombard 04 Jan '18

04 Jan '18

CALL FOR PAPERS PRESENCE 2018 18th conference of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) Prague, Czech Republic May 21-22, 2018 (optional demonstrations and guided sightseeing events May 20) https://ispr.info/call-presence-2018 Conference theme: Challenges Submission deadline: February 20, 2018 OVERVIEW Telepresence, often shortened to presence, is a state or perception in which we overlook or misconstrue the role of technology and feel present in the environments and/or connected to the people or things we experience via technology. It´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences and application areas. Following a series of 17 successful Presence conference events (http://ispr.info/presence-conferences/previous-conferences/) PRESENCE 2018 will retain the single-track format and enjoyable social environment of previous conferences while featuring an expanded variety of paper and poster sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, hands-on demonstrations of presence applications/services/projects, and informal discussion, networking and fun. Members of both academic and industry communities are welcome. At the end of the first day, all attendees are invited to a social dinner; we also hope you´ll join us for all or part of a day of demonstration visits and guided sightseeing on May 20 (the day before the conference). The registration cost is $140, with a discounted student cost of $100. The fee includes lunches on both days, coffee and snacks during breaks, and the social dinner. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The term presence has many formal and informal meanings but is used by a growing interdisciplinary scholarly community to refer to experiences in which technology is overlooked or misconstrued in some way during a mediated experience. Long a focus of those who study virtual reality and environments, it´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences. For example, presence occurs when we get "lost" in the world of a novel, TV show, movie, video game or theme park ride; we´re convinced by the realism of paintings or graphic designs; we treat our cars, computers or other machines as if they have personalities of their own, and we feel like we´re "with" a person we talk to on the phone or in a video conference. The presence research community has been working to identify causes, characteristics and consequences of diverse presence experiences. The consequences identified so far - including arousal/relaxation, empathy, enjoyment, persuasion and more - make clear the importance and power of presence to improve communication across a wide variety of contexts and applications of interest to scholars and those who create media technologies and content. Presence as a concept and set of phenomena is related to the work being done in nearly every field and business sector from art to zoology, with particularly direct applications in business, education, entertainment and health. The 4000+ posts in ISPR Presence News (http://ispr.info/posts) and thousands more on its predecessor, the presence-l listserv (listserv.temple.edu/archives/presence-l.html) along with the Presence Bibliography on the ISPR website (http://ispr.info) illustrate the breadth of presence applications, and the breadth, depth and value of presence scholarship. The objectives of the conference are to deepen and update the knowledge of those already familiar with presence and introduce new scholars and practitioners to the centrality, pervasiveness, and value of presence phenomena, theory and research. The overarching goal is to help integrate and increase collaborative scholarship on presence. SUBMISSIONS Topics We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of presence phenomena and applications in any/every aspect of life. Topics of interest include (but are absolutely not limited to): * Presence theory * Measures of presence * Presence and emotion * Presence and education * Presence and social interaction * Gender and Presence * Neuroscience approaches to Presence * Presence in gaming and entertainment * Philosophical perspectives on presence * Ethics of presence * Presence technologies and applications (e.g. in business, arts, medicine and therapy) * The future of presence research Theme: Challenges Researchers, scholars, technology designers and users, and citizens all face challenges related to presence. We invite submission in all of the categories below that identify, consider and ideally propose solutions to the challenges people in any or all of these groups face now or will face in the future. Data-based projects, concept and theory building work as well as personal (first person) reflections are encouraged. Categories We invite researchers and practitioners to submit their work in the categories below. All submissions are to be in APA format (http://www.apastyle.org) and except for the separate title page not identify the author(s) directly or indirectly (for blind peer review). * PAPERS: Comprehensive descriptions of research or design work and/or theoretical investigation within the scope of the conference; up to 30 pages (including references) in APA format. Papers must relate to existing literature on presence and make an original contribution to it. * SHORT PAPERS: Short papers may be up to 12 pages in APA format. * POSTERS: Visual display presentations. by Christian Katzenbach 04 Jan '18

04 Jan '18

We're hosting a interdisciplinary workshop on the increasing deployment of AI technologies in the area of content moderation and communication governance on digital platforms (think: fake news, hate speech). The Turn to AI in Content Moderation and Communication Goverance, Berlin, March 20. https://www.hiig.de/en/events/workshop-artificial-intelligence-governing-co… Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society Access Now Please send your expressions of interest before Jan 25 to kirsten.gollatz(a)hiig.de. And ping me if you have any questions. Best, Christian — Dr. Christian Katzenbach Head of Research Group Internet Policy & Governance Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, Berlin katzenbach(a)hiig.de ###### Workshop: The turn to artificial intelligence in governing communication online 20.03.2018 | 9:00 - 18:00 ical | gcal Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, Französische Straße 9, 10117 Berlin, Germany The technology underlying artificial intelligence research has increasingly found applications in the area of content moderation and communication governance on digital platforms. While the scale of problematic online content makes a stronger move reasonable, taking down content through automated means can be risky for online expression and access to information. Amid an obscure use of AI-systems, opaque implementation, vague definitions and a lack of accountability, governments and policy-makers are heavily pressuring companies to take action. And a few EU members states have already responded with new regulatory initiatives. The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and Access Now will host a workshop on technological advancements, the extent of Artificial intelligence deployment and the range of approaches to understanding the status and future impact of AI systems to govern social communication on the internet. We invite experts from different fields and backgrounds to participate in the discussion on March 20, 2018 in Berlin. If you would like to participate in the workshop, we ask you to apply with an expression of interest being announced below. Expert Workshop: The turn to artificial intelligence in governing communication online HIIG | Französische Str. 9 | 10117 Berlin 20 March 2018 | 9am – 6pm Themes The workshop will be organized around three problem-oriented questions in order to map challenges of this development: • Who are the primary agents of the socio-technical change to artificial intelligence in content moderation? • How is the turn to AI influenced (e.g. governance instruments)? • Why is the process of change accepted, or not? Sessions will be chaired by known experts who will provide inputs and facilitate interaction among all participants. Participants As the emerging issues transcend disciplinary boundaries and perspectives, workshop participants will have diverse backgrounds. The workshop particularly aims at the exchange between academics and non-academics. It will bring researchers and practitioners from key countries in Europe together. We are looking forward to receiving applications from researchers from all disciplines, members of interest groups and NGOs, as well as practitioners (business, technology) with expertise in artificial intelligence and automation systems in the context of content moderation and the global governance of communication online. Call for Expressions of Interest If you would like to participate in the workshop, we ask you to apply with an expression of interest, including (1) your field of work and the related expertise, (2) the specific topics you would like to contribute to the workshop, and (3) how you would benefit from the expertise of other participants, and vice versa, how would participants benefit from your particular contribution (approx. 500 words). The workshop is limited to 25 participants. Please send your application to kirsten.gollatz(a)hiig.de by no later than 25 January 2018 with the subject line “AI and Communication Governance”. We would highly appreciate if you could forward this call across your network. Organisers The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) explores the dynamic relationship between the Internet and society, including the increasing interpenetration of digital infrastructures and various domains of everyday life. Its goal is to understand the interplay of social-cultural, legal, economic and technical norms in the process of digitisation. Access Now is an international not-for-profit civil society organisation that defends and extends the digital rights of users at risk around the world. We are a team of 40, with local staff in 10 locations around the world. We maintain four legally incorporated entities – Belgium, Costa Rica, Tunisia, and the United States – with our tech, advocacy, policy, granting, and operations teams distributed across all regions. By combining innovative policy, user engagement, and direct technical support, we fight for open and secure communications for all. Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Shadow Information Technologies and Practices Track: Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA Shadow Information Technologies and Practices is a new mini-track in the Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) track. This mini-track solicits papers that address the socio-technical implications, outcomes, and disruptive nature of shadow information technology (shadow IT) and shadow practices of organizational actors within complex organizations. Shadow IT refers to artifacts that are used or developed within organizations outside of and without the approval and knowledge of an organization’s IT department. Socio-technical shadow practices, also known as feral practices, are those in which organizational actors engage with either shadow IT or existing systems in ways that differ from the expected practices, and which take place unbeknownst to organizational and IT managers. The emergence of shadow IT and practices can have broad socio-technical implications for organizations, including those related to organizational power relations, IT governance, and security. Given the theme of the conference, Digital Disruption, we are particularly interested in papers that examine the emergence of shadow IT and practices in response to the introduction and digital disruption of new technologies within business and organizations. In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that seeks to study and understand other aspects of shadow IT and practices. Suggested topics could include: • Effects of shadow IT and practices on organizational work-flow, culture, and structure • Implications of shadow IT and practices for organizational power relationships • Conceptual work that categorizes the types of shadow practices that occur within organizations • Ways in which managers can, do, or should respond to the presence of shadow IT and practices • Security and other issues that arise when organizations actors develop and use shadow IT Mini-Track chairs Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University hrosenba(a)indiana.edu Chase McCoy, Indiana University chamccoy(a)indiana.edu Submission Instructions: https://amcis2018.aisnet.org/submissions/call-for-papers/ Important Dates: January 15, 2018: Manuscript submissions open February 28, 2018: Deadline for paper submissions April 18, 2018: Authors will be notified of decisions April 25, 2018: Camera-ready submissions due
