Advice: pitching STS work to AI scientists

Hi AOIR list, I'm writing to ask for advice on pitching doctoral work grounded in an STS approach to AI scientists at an ethics and society conference. (They expressly ask for early stage PhD and Masters students to apply). Does anyone have advice on how to shape work that is mostly critical of how AI science approaches questions of ethics to the AI science community itself? I imagine that anyone doing any kind of critical STS work and engaging with scientists working in that discipline might have insights and references. It would be nice to have my abstract accepted, but I'm also interested in engaging with this community. They use git, and not github, due to problems with licensing in the latter. New book series „Transforming Communications“ (Palgrave Macmillan) starts with edited volume (OPEN ACCESS): "Communicative Figurations: Transforming Communications in Times of Deep Mediatization“ edited by Andreas Hepp, Andreas Breiter and Uwe Hasebrink This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. Syracuse University's School of Information Studies welcomes applicants for our Ph.D. program. The interdisciplinary nature of our program is visible through the backgrounds of the 30 current doctoral students. These students hail from ten countries and have academic training in the social sciences, communications, business, computer science, librarianship, linguistics, information science, and others areas. Messing with Methods in More-than-Human Worlds Organisers: Jaz Hee-jeong Choi, QUT; Anne Galloway, Victoria University of Wellington (NZ), Larissa Hjorth, RMIT (AU) A multitude of political, technoscientific and ecological disruptions are challenging the ‘myth’ of human exceptionalism, forcing researchers to find new ways of understanding—and intervening in—a range of human/nonhuman encounters. From reconfigured definitions of ‘agency’ and the ‘social’ to renewed explorations of ‘co-presence’ and ‘mutual becoming,’ more-than-human approaches (see for e.g.: Kirksey & Helmreich, 2010; Buller, 2015; Despret, 2016; Bastian et al., 2017) can exemplify Haraway’s (2016) invitation to ‘stay with the trouble’ of human/nonhuman entanglements. But actually doing this research is hard. There is still a tendency, as Abram (2011) puts it, to speak “about such entities only behind their backs” instead of actively calling out and listening to them. And when we do succeed with that task, we still face the challenge of how to (re)tell these stories, or even trickier, how to ‘take action.’ This panel is a hopeful call for a collective, transdisciplinary effort to consider these methodological possibilities and limitations, and to share even our messiest experiments in creating and communicating knowledge necessary for thriving in more-than-human worlds. We welcome papers that think through these, and other, questions: What does it mean to do more-than-human participatory research? How does taking the more-than-human seriously reconfigure both notions and practicalities of ‘open,’ ethical research? What kinds of more-than-human (cosmo)politics are made public through different methods of ‘engagement’ and ‘impact’? What is the role of design and/or creative practice as both process and product in more-than-human research?
