CFP Journal of Peer Production DEADLINE EXTENDED
by Steve Collins 09 Jan '18

09 Jan '18

Apologies, my previous post contained an error concerning the new dates. PEER PRODUCTION: RESEARCH AND PRACTICE The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run peer-reviewed journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. JoPP is an open-access journal that allows readers to read, download, copy, distribute and link to the full texts of articles. Authors license works under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) and retain full copyright in their work. In terms of research, we have published ten landmark issues exploring the interconnection of peer production with activism, political economy, bio and hardware hacking, free software, value and currency, shared machine shops, the law, state policies, feminism and queer issues, alternative infrastructures, and waged labour. We will publish our eleventh issue on peer production and urbanism in January 2018 and our twelfth on the institutionalisation of shared machine shops in May 2018. In terms of practice, we have debated policy decisions on a public and archived mailing list. We have renovated the scientific peer review system by publishing not only reviews of papers, but also – in order to fully appreciate the impact of reviews – original submissions of articles. We have launched a “signalling” system so that imperfect articles can be published rapidly, whilst maintaining the standards and reputation of the journal. Having defined the field of peer production studies and put into practice peer production principles, we now seek to foster new avenues and partnerships. We are calling this new phase in the development of the Journal of Peer Production “OPEN”. At the root of “OPEN” is the fact that we now live in an era where exclusion and inequality are being justified by overtly racist, even fascist, ideas. It is therefore more important than ever for progressives to develop viable alternatives to plutocracy and environmental destruction which highlight peer values such as inclusion and openness. There are two parts to JoPP “OPEN”: “OPEN” EOI and “OPEN” CFP. JOPP: “OPEN” EOI We are calling for “OPEN” editorial Expressions of Interest from people wanting to develop their own take on peer production. This means we are offering our website and network of reviewers for the production and dissemination of activist or scientific interventions in the field of peer production. We are open to accounts of projects, to explorations of special interests, to analysis of the “infrastructures of the commons” (universal income systems, cooperatives and unions, free public services), etc. We are particularly interested in initiatives that would disseminate peer production knowledge and values to audiences beyond the academic and activist communities. Please write to the JoPP general public list <jopp-public AT lists.ourproject.org> with your ideas or if you prefer to discuss them in confidence please contact the private JoPP editorial team mailing list <jopp-editorial AT lists.ourproject.org>. We look forward to hearing from you! JOPP: “OPEN” CFP ISSUE #13 We are also announcing a Call for Papers for issue #13 of the Journal of Peer Production on the theme of “OPEN”. This means that contributions can explore any aspect of peer production. Please refer to past issues for examples and to our style guidelines for guidance on the type of contributions we accept. Important dates: 500-word abstracts 15th February 2018 Acceptance of papers 15th March 2018 Full papers due 30th June 2018 Reviews due and sent to authors 30th August 2018 Revised papers due 30th October 2018 Signals due 30th December 2018 Issue released 31st January 2019 Submission guidelines Extended paper abstracts of up to 500 words are due 15 Feburary 2018. (Call for papers) Internet, Policy and Politics 2018: Long Live Democracy?
by Victoria Nash 09 Jan '18

09 Jan '18

Internet, Policy and Politics 2018: Long Live Democracy? 20 - 21 September 2018, University of Oxford. This conference is convened by the Oxford Internet Institute for the OII-edited academic journal Policy and Internet, in collaboration with the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) standing group on Internet and Politics. http://ipp.oii.ox.ac.uk/2018/call-for-papers This conference will question the theses of democratic renewal - and democratic decay - in a digital world. We are looking for rigorous research that helps us understand the role of digital platforms in democratic processes and in the development of new institutional arrangements that ensure democratic systems remain free, fair and open. Current democratic and government structures are in urgent need of institutional renewal if they are to survive in the 21st century but we remain optimistic that harnessing the potential of internet-mediated technologies might support the reinvigoration of democracy. In this conference we thus seek to place critical attention on the potential role of internet mediated activity in undermining core aspects of democracy whilst also calling for positive, optimistic contributions which highlight the many ways in which the internet has allowed existing democracies to grow and change. We welcome theoretical, empirical, qualitative and quantitative studies, from all disciplines. Submissions are invited to tackle one of the following themes (though other submissions are also welcome): * The role of social media in political campaigns * Governance and politics of platforms such as Uber, oDesk, AirBnB, Facebook or Twitter * Accountability and rights of redress in the platform society * Innovations in civic participation and engagement * Digital political advertising and voter targeting * Online social movements * Echo chambers and online political fragmentation * "Fake news" and electronic propaganda * Astroturfing and automatic manipulation of social media * The character and tone of online political speech and debate * Instability and volatility in political life * Changing party systems * The rise of extremism and polarization * Models of democracy for the digital age Accepted papers will be organized into thematically and methodologically relevant sessions and parallel streams. Proposal submission Paper proposals should consist of a title and a 1,000-word extended abstract that specifies and motivates the research question, describes the methods and data used, and gives an indication of the findings. Abstracts will be reviewed, and the authors of accepted proposals are expected to submit full papers prior to the conference. After the conference, participants will be invited to submit their paper for consideration as part of a special issue of the journal Policy and Internet. More information on how to submit is available at: http://ipp.oii.ox.ac.uk/2018/call-for-papers Dr Victoria Nash Deputy Director Policy & Research Fellow Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/ Tel: 01865 287231 Tw: VickiNashOII

Reconsidering Value and Labour in the Digital Age.
by Christian Fuchs 09 Jan '18

09 Jan '18

Now (finally) available as paperback: Reconsidering Value and Labour in the Digital Age, ed. Eran Fisher & Christian Fuchs. http://www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9781137478566 http://fuchs.uti.at/books/reconsidering-value-and-labour-in-the-digital-age/ How do labour and value-production change in the age of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter? The labour theory of value is one of the core tenets of Marx’s theory of historical materialism, and of his understanding of capitalism. It is the theory that connects value to class structure, and that unveils the exploitative social relations that lay behind prices of commodities. This volume explores current interventions into the digital labour theory of value, proposing theoretical and empirical work that contributes to our understanding of Marx's labour theory of value, proposes how labour and value are transformed under conditions of digital and social media, and employ the theory in order to shed light on specific practices. With contributions by Christian Fuchs, Marisol Sandoval, Arwid Lund, Bingqing Xia, Brice Nixon, Eran Fisher, Yuqi Na, Thomas Allmer, Sebastian Sevignani, Jernej Prodnik, Olivier Frayssé, Jakob Rigi, Kylie Jarrett, Andrea Fumagalli, Frederick H. Digital tools such as social media, mobile devices, video games, data analysis infrastructures, and networked technologies increasingly permeate our everyday lives. As a result, the production and expression of ‘meanings’ or ‘values’ – like the experience and performance of identity, gender, embodied lived experience, political activism, linguistic engagement, knowledge and power relations – are increasingly co-constituted by digital platforms. This one-day conference, which includes keynote speeches from Prof. Tim Jordan (University of Sussex, UK) and Dr. Katrin Tiidenberg (Aarhus University, Denmark), aims to bring together researchers from a wide array of disciplines with an interest in digital culture. Visit https://digitalculture2018.wordpress.com<https://digitalculture2018.wordpress.com/> for more information and updates. Submission We invite proposals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to present theoretical and empirical research in response, but not limited, to the following topics: - How can we meaningfully study the relationship between digital platforms and the activities they enable? - What is the relationship between features of digital platforms and the communicative acts they mediate? - How can we understand the value landscape of digital entertainment? - How do features of digital platforms become re-appropriated as resources for the construction and performance of identity, and to what extent does this in turn shape perceptions of the platform? - How do digital platforms participate in knowledge-creation and the establishment of dominant discourses? - How do digital platforms affect the aesthetic and artistic practices of mediation? To encourage proposals from doctoral students, we are awarding six joint-travel/accommodation grants to successful proposals. Further details below. There will be no fee charged for presenting at, or attending, this conference. Submissions should follow the below format and be submitted to digitalculture2018(a)gmail.com by 23:00 GMT on Friday 9th February 2018. ICA preconf CfP: Media, Gender and Sexuality in Europe
by Szulc Lukasz 09 Jan '18

09 Jan '18

Preconference Call for Papers International Communication Association Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer Interest Group 24 May 2018, Prague, Czech Republic MEDIA, GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN EUROPE Media are gendered and sexualized while gender and sexuality are heavily mediated. Gender and sexuality figure prominently in many aspects of media production, representation, consumption and use. At this preconference, we will build on a vast body of research in this area to examine the intersections between media, gender and sexuality as well as age, ability, class, religion, race, ethnicity and nationality. Inspired by the fact that the International Communication Association will for the first time in history hold its annual conference in Central Europe, we would like to think about those intersections from a European perspective, particularly from the perspective of underrepresented contexts such as Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. How do European contexts matter for the intersections of media, gender and sexuality? How are those intersections manifested in Europe at different historical moments and at different geographical scales (such as cities, countries and regions)? What can we learn about those intersections thinking through Europe-specific issues such as larger geopolitical challenges (e.g. Brexit, austerity measures, 'refugee crisis', postcommunist transitions and the rise of the far right) as well as challenges specifically related to gender and sexuality (e.g. homonationalism in Western Europe, 'gay propaganda' laws in Russia and Lithuania, and anti-gender campaigns across the continent)? Also, more theoretically, what can such Europe-specific research contribute to mainstream, largely Anglo-American, studies of media, gender and sexuality? What are the legacies and the futures of European gender, feminist, sexuality and LGBTQ media studies? SUBMISSION PROCESS We invite scholars at all stages of their careers, across multiple disciplines as well as employing diverse methods and theories to submit abstracts of 300 to 500 words along with their short bio notes to Lukasz Szulc (L.Szulc(a)lse.ac.uk<mailto:L.Szulc@lse.ac.uk>) by 1 February 2018. We are open to works addressing a wide spectrum of mainstream and alternative media (including but not limited to press, radio, television, cinema, digital and mobile media) and a diversity of genres and platforms (such as journalism, advertising, TV drama, porn, films, games, social media and dating sites). However, we ask that all submissions reflect on the importance of the European context. The preconference will consist of short individual presentations, allowing participants to have in-depth discussions and produce broader insights. Authors will be informed of their acceptance or rejection by 1 March 2018. We will consider to publish selected contributions in a special issue in a peer-reviewed journal. Authors of the accepted abstracts will need to register through the ICA website (www.icahdq.org<http://www.icahdq.org>). Cost for participation is 25USD for early registration (by 30 April 2018) and 35USD for late registration (by 4 May 2018). The underlying recommender systems are designed to help users and providers in a number of ways. From a user’s viewpoint, for example, these systems assist consumers in finding relevant things within large item collections. On the other hand, from a provider’s perspective, recommenders have also shown to be valuable tools to steer consumer behavior. From a technical perspective, the design of such systems requires the careful consideration of various aspects, including the choice of the user modeling approach, the underlying recommendation algorithm, and the user interface. This track aims to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss open challenges, latest solutions and novel research approaches in the field of recommender systems. Besides the above-mentioned technical aspects, works are also particularly welcome that address questions related to the user perception and the business value of recommender systems. Topics include (but are not limited to): Recommendation algorithms and their evaluation User modeling and preference elicitation Users’ perception of recommender systems Business value of recommendation systems and multi-stakeholder environments Explanations and trust Context-aware recommendation algorithms Recommending to groups of users Case studies of real-world implementations - Adaptive Hypermedia and the Semantic Web Peter Brusilovsky, Univ. of Pittsburgh, USA Geert-Jan Houben, TU Delft, The Netherlands Adaptive hypermedia and adaptive web explore alternatives to the traditional “one-size-fits-all” approach in the development of web and hypermedia systems. Adaptive hypermedia and adaptive web systems build a model of the interests, preferences and knowledge of each individual user, and use this model in order to adapt the behavior of hypermedia and web systems to the needs of that user. Semantic web frequently serves as an infrastructure to enable adaptive and personalized Web systems. Semantic web technology targets the use of explicit semantics and metadata to help web systems perform the desired functionality: this implies the use of linked data from the web, the use of ontologies in models, or the use of metadata in user interfaces. This track aims to provide a forum to researchers to discuss open research problems, solid solutions, latest challenges, novel applications and innovative research approaches in adaptive hypermedia and semantic web. Topics include (but are not limited to): Web user profiles Adaptive navigation support Personalized search Web content adaptation Analytics of web user data Adaptive Web sites and portals Adaptive books and textbooks Social navigation and social search Navigation support in continuous media and virtual environments Usability engineering for adaptive hypermedia and Web systems Novel methodologies for evaluating adaptive hypermedia and Web systems Semantic Web technologies for Web personalization Ontology-based data access and integration/exchange on the adaptive web Ontology engineering and ontology patterns for the adaoptive web Semantic social network mining, analysis, representation, and management Crowdsourcing semantics; methods, dynamics, and challenges Semantic Web and Linked Data for adaptation - Intelligent User Interfaces Shlomo Berkovsky, CSIRO, Australia Markus Schedl, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria Intelligent User Interfaces aim to improve the interaction between computer systems and human users by means of Artificial Intelligence. The systems support and complement different types of abilities that are normally unavailable in the context of human-only cognition. Previous work has found that humans do not always make the best possible decisions when working together with computer systems. By designing and deploying improved forms of support for interactive collaboration between human decision makers and systems, we can enable decision making processes that better leverage the strengths of both collaborators. More generally this research track can be characterised by exploring how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter and more productive, which may leverage solutions from human-computer interaction, data mining, natural language processing, information visualisation, and knowledge representation and reasoning. Topics include (but are not limited to): Adaptive personal virtual assistants (e.g., Siri, Cortana, Alexa) Adapting natural interaction (e.g., natural language, speech, gesture) Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological info, etc.) Intelligent wearable and mobile interfaces Smart environments and tangible computing Transparency and control of decision support systems (e.g., semi-autonomous systems) Explainable intelligent user interfaces Affective and aesthetic interfaces Tailored persuasion and argumentation interfaces Tailored decision support (e.g., over- and under-reliance in uncertain domains) Adaptive information visualization Scalability of intelligent user interfaces to access huge datasets Novel methodologies and real-world implementations of IUI User-centric studies of interactions with intelligent user interfaces Novel datasets and use cases for intelligent user interfaces - Technology-Enhanced Adaptive Learning Olga Santos, UNED, Spain Carla Limongelli, Università Degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy Learning is a very complex human process that involves cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects. Smart technological solutions are expected to identify and model the learning needs in these three aspects and provide personalized adapted support that can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of learning experiences. Technological innovations bring new opportunities to recognize learner’s needs and how to orchestrate suitable learning solutions, with and without the involvement of the teacher. This covers not only formal educational settings, but also lifelong learning requirements (including workplace training) as well as the acquisition of skills (e.g., in daily activities, serious games, etc.). To address the wide spectrum of modeling issues and challenges that can be raised, contributions from various research areas are necessary. Therefore, this track invites researchers, developers, and practitioners from various disciplines to present their innovative learning solutions, share acquired experience, and discuss the main modeling challenges for personalized adaptive learning. Topics include (but are not limited to): Domain, learner, teacher and context modeling Modeling cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of learning Adaptive and personalized support for learning, diagnosis and feedback Agent-based learning environments and virtual pedagogical agents Open corpus personalized learning Collaborative and group learning UMAP aspects in specific learning solutions: educational recommender systems, intelligent tutoring systems, serious games, personal learning environments, MOOCs,... Wearable technologies and augmented reality in adaptive personalized learning Processing collected data for UMAP: educational data mining, learning analytics, big data, deep learning… Semantic web and ontologies for e-learning Interoperability, portability, and scalability issues Case studies in real-world educational settings - Personalized Social Web Cecile Paris, CSIRO, Australia Julita Vassileva, University of Saskatchewan, Canada The massive uptake of numerous social media platforms on the web gave rise the Social Web, where people can obtain, disseminate and share information, interact, collaborate and form communities (social networks), through a variety of means. A number of research questions arise, for example how to model the flow of information through the social web, understand people’s experiences and the effectiveness of online social networks, identify users or communities with behaviour potentially harmful to themselves or others, gain insights into society, or design, develop and evaluate automated personalization tools to improve the individual user experience. We invite original submission addressing all aspects of personalization and personal experience in online social systems. Topics include (but are not limited to): Personalization of the web experience in social systems Social and crowd-generated data for personalization Wisdom of the crowd, human computation and collective intelligence for personalization Incentives for participation and persuasion in online communities Use of online social data for personalized offline experiences Behavior modeling of individuals, groups, and communities Dynamics of social collaborative systems Analysis of information flows in social networks Opinion mining and social media analytics Biases and individual/local perception in social systems Adaptations based on personality, society, and culture Privacy, perceived security, and trust in social systems Ethical issues involved in studying the social web Personalization algorithms and protocols inspired by human societies Machine learning for personalization Evaluation methodologies for the social web ********************** IMPORTANT DATES Submission due Abstract: February 18, 2018 Full paper: February 25, 2018 Notification: Apri 1, 2018 Camera-ready: May 6, 2018 Note: The submissions times are 11:59pm Hawaii time. ********************** FORMAT DETAILS AND PUBLICATION Page limits: Long papers - 8 pages + references; Short pages: 4 pages + references. Note that the references do not count towards page limits. Papers that exceed the page limits or formatting guidelines will be returned without review. Submissions should be single blinded, i.e. authors names should be included in the submissions. Papers must be formatted using the ACM SIG Standard (SIGCONF) proceedings template: https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. Please note that ACM changed its templates at the start of 2017, so please ensure that you use the new template and do not reuse an old template. All accepted papers will be published by ACM and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper there. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.)

Connected Learning Summit | August 1-3, 2018 | MIT Media Lab, Cambridge, MA *********************************************************** * Call for submissions closing soon for the 2018 Connected Learning Summit. * Application Deadline: January 22, 2018. * Learn More: http://clsummit.news/CLScfpAIR *********************************************************** We encourage the submission of academic papers and project presentations as well as more innovative session formats which focus on digital technologies for learning, educational and commercial games and other media, innovative tech-infused curricula, and theoretical and/or empirical exploration of digital media and technology for learning. Final paper and extended abstracts from all session types will be included in the Connected Learning Conference Proceedings. All proposals will be peer reviewed. Research papers only will be blind reviewed. Session Formats: • Research Papers (academic papers will be subject to blind peer review) • Spotlights • Workshops (60-minute session - make things, build things, test things—the sky’s the limit!) • Symposia (similar to presentation sessions but are crafted to tackle a specific theme or issue related to the conference and the field) • Well Played (the goal of these sessions is to help further develop and define a literacy of games and media as well as a sense of their value) • Hall of Failure (candid discussion of lessons learned in research and/or design projects) • Ignite Talk (highly engaging, firehose style, punchy 5-minute talks where slides ruthlessly auto-advance) • Working Paper • Tech Demo (we especially encourage the submission of early prototypes, wireframes, and first playables) About the Connected Learning Summit The mission of the CLS is to fuel a growing movement of innovators harnessing the power of emerging technology to expand access to participatory, playful, and creative learning. It represents a merger between three community events with this shared vision and values: the Digital Media and Learning Conference, the Games+Learning+Society Conference, and Sandbox Summit. With a unique focus on cross-sector connections and progressive and catalytic innovation, the event brings together leading researchers, educators and developers. The program includes a mix of engaging presentation and workshop formats ranging from speculative design, to game walkthroughs, sharing work in progress, and research panels. Potential authors are welcome to contact the series editor outside of the initial time frame of this call for book proposals but should note that priority for funding support for suitable projects will be given to those proposals meeting the deadline. There is a preference for the submission of proposals for books whose writing can be finished and that can be submitted to UWP within the next 6-15 months. In the event of a surplus of strong proposals preference will be given to single-authored book proposals over edited volumes. We welcome submissions of a book outline proposal with (exactly one) sample chapter submitted as one single Word or PDF document. We can only accept suggestions for books written in English.
