CfP: Journalism and Social Media: Redistribution of Power?
by S.A. Eldridge II 15 Jan '18

15 Jan '18

Dear Colleagues, For those working in areas of journalism studies and social media, this Call for Papers may be of interest. Kind regards, Scott Eldridge and Marcel Broersma Journal: Media and Communication (Open Access Journal) Title: Journalism and Social Media: Redistribution of Power? Editors: Marcel Broersma and Scott Eldridge II (University of Groningen, The Netherlands) Deadline for Abstracts: 1 March 2018 Deadline for Submissions: 30 September 2018 Publication of the Issue: February/March 2019 Information: In the last decade, social media have been fully integrated into journalism practice. This has had an impact on how news is produced, what online news texts look like, and how audiences consume news, and even what we consider “news” and “journalism” to be. This has led some scholars to argue that social media have been “normalized” within existing frameworks, and further that their rise has not had an impact on journalism’s core. Others contend that norms, practices, and forms are fundamentally changing. This would, by extension, suggest a major change in journalism’s relationships with other agents in the networked ecology of news, including its relationship with sources, social media platforms, technology companies, and the citizens their content reaches. In the wake of a particularly tumultuous year for news and journalism, where social media and its pervasive nature within and around news media and politics have been front and center and where journalism’s public role has been under review, this thematic issue offers an opportunity to conceptualize the relationship between journalism, social media, and the mechanisms of power anew. We invite scholars to contribute papers which advance our understanding of these dynamics, which are increasingly part of our public discussions of news, media, and power within society, through critical and reflective academic study. This thematic issue focuses on questions of if and how the rise of social media has redistributed power in the news media ecosystem. We invite scholars to explore questions around the functions and roles journalism traditionally fulfilled, and weigh whether and how these have been altered—or taken over—by other players. Exploring how sources can now bypass reporters to get their message across to new audiences, and how citizens can navigate social platforms for news independent of traditional journalism heavyweights, we invite scholars to contribute to debates around this reorientation of media power. We are interested articles that shed new light across these themes, including papers which explore: The power balance between journalists and sources, including politicians and industry leaders, and where these have changed with the rise of social media; Transformations in journalism practice, epistemology, and (online) news texts that reflect shifting power distributions in the news ecology; Distributors of “fake” news, or commercial message such as native advertising, who get their messages legitimized in news media discourses and the implications of these distributors on news dynamics; Participatory practices, polarized audiences and social media for what they signal about divisions within broader society; Novel methodological approaches to exploring the shifting power relationships between journalism, social media platforms, and other realms of societal power; Other papers which expand our understanding of these dynamics within fields of journalism, media, and communications studies. Instructions for Authors: Authors interested in submitting a paper for this issue are asked to consult the journal’s instructions for authors: https://www.cogitatiopress.com/mediaandcommunication/pages/view/forauthors <https://www.cogitatiopress.com/mediaandcommunication/pages/view/forauthors> If interested, please send an abstract of max. 400 words to: s.a.eldridge.ii(a)rug.nl before 1 March 2018. Authors will be notified about acceptance before 21 March 2018. Deadline for the submission of full papers will be 30 September 2018. Final papers can be 8,000 words max. Open Access: The journal has an article processing charge to cover its costs, so authors are advised to check with their institutions if funds are available to cover open access publication fees. Social semiotics on web sites - French texts
by Daniel Jung 14 Jan '18

14 Jan '18

Dear colleagues, I am looking for recent French texts (articles, book chapters, video clips) about multimodality, and social semiotic discourse on web sites. Ideally an analysis of a concrete web site, or a comparison, explaining and theorizing the relationships between the different modes involved, and their place in a cultural discourse (in the sense of Kress and van Leeuwen). So far, the closest I have come are the works of Nathalie Lacelle (Quebec), and Sébastien Rouquette (Clermont-Ferrand), but their texts are not ideal for my purpose. French texts in multimodality and semiotics tend to be about literacy, second language acquisition and didactical settings, and are often heavily text-based, which is not really what I am after. So I am gratefull for any help in identifying resources! (Asking for a student). Thanks, Daniel Jung

Re: [Air-L] research ethics again - students and FB
by Christopher J. Richter 14 Jan '18

As Sohail Dahdal clarifies, the ethics of human subject research turn not on whether the actions subjects are directed to do are laudable, but whether the research involves risk of harm to the participants, in this case, minors. Risks for the participants of the study as proposed might also include that of being denied social media service in future, which for some folks I know would be devastating! As for Dan’s hypothetical, yes, requiring participants to face risk of arrest (or of being handcuffed, which can be terrifying and actually can hurt, or tear gassed, or billy clubbed or even shot—sometimes the degree of real world risk is difficult to assess) is unethical, especially if, as minors, they are not legally capable of making decisions about the risk themselves. *** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Participation: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23rd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces, IUI 2018 Tokyo, Japan March 7-11, 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018 IUI 2018 is the 23rd annual meeting of the Intelligent User Interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. IUI is the conference where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. The conference brings together participants from academia, industry, and non-profit organizations, and gives them the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels, and student consortium sessions. IUI 2018 will be held in the Central Tokyo. Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the largest metropolitan area in the world. Central Tokyo offers a wide range of accommodation options and tourism attractions within short walking distance from the conference venue. Tokyo is served by two airports, Haneda and Narita, which can be reached by direct flights from more than 150 cities all over the world. Both airports are served by express trains that reach Central Tokyo in 35 and 55 minutes, respectively. The program of IUI 2018 can be found at http://iui.acm.org/2018/program.html and the list of accepted papers is at http://iui.acm.org/2018/accepted_papers.html. The conference program will include technical presentations, poster and demo sessions, student consortium, and 7 workshops. It will also feature 3 keynotes from distinguished researchers: James A. Landay (Stanford University), Masataka Goto (AIST), and Jennifer Golbeck (University of Maryland). The conference will be co-located with the domestic IPSJ Interaction conference and the program will be complemented by social events, including a welcome reception and a conference dinner at a traditional Japanese restaurant. We cordially invite you to participate in IUI 2018 and co-located workshops. Conference registration is already open at http://iui.acm.org/2018/registration.html. Organising Committee of IUI 2018.
