Lost youtube comments
by Philippa Smith 17 Jan '18

17 Jan '18

Hi Everyone My latest research project involves linguistic analysis of comments/replies under a specific youtube video. Interestingly I cut and pasted the comments from a particular youtube url in July last year and saved them in a word document. However in going back to update this in 2018 I find that those original comments are no longer accessible in that the site does not automatically load more comments beyond the last three months. This leave me with an incomplete data set. I find this situation rather intriguing. If anyone who is better informed than I am might enlighten me as to whether this just reflects a change in youtube policy or might relate to settings of the youtube poster - that would be helpful. And if there is any solution - even better! Re: [Air-L] Targeting a specific date on a public Facebook account?
by Maurice Vergeer 17 Jan '18

17 Jan '18

Hi Virginia, remember that companies can use expiration dates for their Facebook posts. This means that sometimes past posts will not be accessible anymore. My advice is always to collect the data as soon as possible. or at least allow a few weeks to let the comments accumulate. As Deen correctly states Rfacebook can do what you want. A nice package. best regards Maurice On Wed, Jan 17, 2018 at 8:02 AM, Virginia Balfour < virginiabalfour(a)hotmail.com> wrote: > Hello > > I'd appreciate if anyone knows how to "go to" a specific date on a public > Facebook page (i.e. not my own, one belonging to a company). March 1: Launch of the book "Digital Demagogue: Authoritarian Capitalism in the Age of Trump and Twitter"
by Christian Fuchs 17 Jan '18

Book Launch: Digital Demagogue: Authoritarian Capitalism in the Age of Trump and Twitter, by Christian Fuchs Thursday, March 1, 2018, 19:00 University of Westminster 309 Regent Street London W1B 2HW 117 Boardroom Organised by Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies, Communication and Media Research Institute and Pluto Press https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/digital-demagogue-authoritarian-capitalism-i… Christian Fuchs will be giving an introductory talk to “Digital Demagogue”, a timely and topical study of the expressions of ideology, nationalism and authoritarianism in the age of big data, social media and Donald Trump. We’re all familiar with the ways that Donald Trump uses digital media to communicate, from the ridiculous to the terrifying. This book digs deeper into the use of those tools in politics to show how they have facilitated the rise of authoritarianism, nationalism, and right-wing ideologies around the world. Christian Fuchs applies an updated theoretical framework that draws on thinkers such as Franz L. Neumann, Rosa Luxemburg, Theodor W. Adorno, Erich Fromm, Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, Wilhelm Reich, Leo Löwenthal and Klaus Theweleit, to show the pernicious role of social media in the hands of nationalist politicians. CfP EASST 2018 (July, Lancaster), Panel on Technology, Infrastructure, and the Smartification of Cities
by Regev Nathansohn 17 Jan '18

17 Jan '18

Dear colleagues, We invite you to share your abstracts for a panel on Technology, Infrastructure and the Smartification of Cities (C10) <https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6229>, which will take place this July during EASST conference in Lancaster <http://easst2018.easst.net>. This panel seeks papers drawing from ethnographic explorations of Smart Cities' confluences, collaborations and intersections between the various stakeholders as well as between humans and the city's infrastructure. To submit your abstract click here <https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/paperproposal/6229>. Short abstract What are Smart Cities? This panel seeks contributions that explore what is involved in processes of smartification, and examine what kind of infrastructural work is required to enact and harmonize potentially diverging technopolitical goals in the designs and everyday life of Smart Cities. Long abstract A growing number of cities define themselves as "Smart Cities" based on the widening and deepening of the technological platforms they implement. From focusing on infrastructure and public services to culture and sociality, Smart City projects allow for confluences, collaborations and intersections of various stakeholders, such as developers and users, decision-makers and residents, experts and non-experts, programmers and artists, entrepreneurs and researchers. Some stakeholders and observers argue that smart city projects contribute to governance efficiency, to social connectedness, and to improvements of climate, health and security. At the same time, critics show skepticism regarding the goals assigned to urban digital tools (such as sensors, CCTV cameras, and other digital tools), the practices of their operation, and their derived political and ethical considerations (such as algorithm governance and ubiquitous surveillance). Since cities "smartification" is a vague social process with different, sometimes contradicting meanings, this panel seeks papers drawing from ethnographic explorations of Smart Cities' confluences, collaborations and intersections between the various stakeholders as well as between humans and the city's infrastructure. Such papers could focus on the various interests, strategies and tactics involved in the invention, implementation and use of Smart City projects; on processes of shaping urban sociality and denizens' subjectivity through the design of digital platforms and algorithms; on the formations of digital labor in the smart city's economy of datafication; on forms of exercising power on and resistance of cyborg citizens; and on the kinds of creative collaborations that evolve in and around smart city projects. CFP EASST 2018 panel A10: Commoning the Smart City
by ginger coons 17 Jan '18

17 Jan '18

Dear AoIRists, We (Nicole Foster and ginger coons of the Digital Cultures Research Centre at the University of the West of England) welcome submissions to EASST 2018 panel A10: Commoning the Smart City. Submissions can be made through the EASST website https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6199 *Short abstract* Smart cities construct inhabitants as consumers. They aggregate and exploit individual preferences and behaviors to create rational, efficient cities. Hackability could subvert 'smart' initiatives. This panel explores tensions between the smart and the hackable in the context of the digital commons. *Long abstract* Engineers, planners and policymakers espouse faith in technocratic solutions to urban ills. 'Smart city' narratives suggest that positive outcomes can be achieved by creating personalized experiences of the city. Instead of a generalized conception of the public, city inhabitants are constructed as diverse consumers representing market sectors. Interactions with public services and spaces can be tailored to produce efficient behavior and pleasurable, engaging experiences, making concerns regarding surveillance and social engineering more difficult to identify and contest. Because the 'smart city' is based on aggregating and exploiting individual preferences and behaviors, realizing the ideal of an urban commons becomes even more elusive. The 'hackable city' (frequently constituted as bottom-up organizing) could provide a subversive corrective to 'smart city' (top-down, centrally-managed) initiatives. However, the radical potential of these practices remains uncertain. While do-it-yourself urbanists and civic hackers can be seen as challenging these narratives through the appropriation of technologies and spaces by encouraging unsanctioned uses of public spaces, such projects are not subject to participatory planning processes and may reflect elite consumption preferences. 'Hackable city' interventions could prove to be exclusionary. We invite contributions which critically explore the tensions underpinning smart and hackable city technologies, public space and its relationship to the commons. How might engagement with technically-mediated public spaces undermine or constitute a commons? Do hackable city interventions empower public space users to become producers? We especially seek work that complicates implicit dichotomies like bottom-up and top down, or hackable versus smart, engaging with the grey space between extremes. We look forward to your submissions! -ginger coons and Nicole Foster

Workshop "The Turn to AI in Communication Governance", Berlin, March 20
by Christian Katzenbach 17 Jan '18

17 Jan '18

Dear colleagues, in collaboration with Access Now, we are hosting a workshop on the turn to AI in communication governance and content moderation at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, Berlin, on March 20. Among the confirmed contributors are: Niva Elkin-Koren, Tarleton Gillespie, Jillian York, Michael Latzer. See the full workshop description below and here: https://www.hiig.de/en/events/workshop-artificial-intelligence-governing-co… Feel free to contact me off-list if you have any questions. We’d like to receive expressions of interest before January 25, if possible. Best, Christian Katzenbach ### Workshop: The turn to artificial intelligence in governing communication online 20.03.2018 | 9:00 - 18:00 Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, Französische Straße 9, 10117 Berlin The technology underlying artificial intelligence research has increasingly found applications in the area of content moderation and communication governance on digital platforms. While the scale of problematic online content makes a stronger move reasonable, taking down content through automated means can be risky for online expression and access to information. Amid an obscure use of AI-systems, opaque implementation, vague definitions and a lack of accountability, governments and policy-makers are heavily pressuring companies to take action. And a few EU members states have already responded with new regulatory initiatives. The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) and Access Now will host a workshop on technological advancements, the extent of Artificial intelligence deployment and the range of approaches to understanding the status and future impact of AI systems to govern social communication on the internet. We invite experts from different fields and backgrounds to participate in the discussion on March 20, 2018 in Berlin. If you would like to participate in the workshop, we ask you to apply with an expression of interest being announced below. Themes The workshop will be organized around three problem-oriented questions in order to map challenges of this development: • Who are the primary agents of the socio-technical change to artificial intelligence in content moderation? • How is the turn to AI influenced (e.g. governance instruments)? • Why is the process of change accepted, or not? Sessions will be chaired by known experts who will provide inputs and facilitate interaction among all participants. Confirmed contributors • Niva Elkin-Koren (Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society | Haifa Center for Law & Technology) • Tarleton Gillespie (remotely – Microsoft Research New England | Cornell University) • Michael Latzer (University of Zurich) • Jillian York (Electronic Frontier Foundation | Center for Internet & Human Rights) Participants As the emerging issues transcend disciplinary boundaries and perspectives, workshop participants will have diverse backgrounds. The workshop particularly aims at the exchange between academics and non-academics. It will bring researchers and practitioners from key countries in Europe together. We are looking forward to receiving applications from researchers from all disciplines, members of interest groups and NGOs, as well as practitioners (business, technology) with expertise in artificial intelligence and automation systems in the context of content moderation and the global governance of communication online. Call for Expressions of Interest If you would like to participate in the workshop, we ask you to apply with an expression of interest, including (1) your field of work and the related expertise, (2) the specific topics you would like to contribute to the workshop, and (3) how you would benefit from the expertise of other participants, and vice versa, how would participants benefit from your particular contribution (approx. 500 words). The workshop is limited to 25 participants. Please send your application to kirsten.gollatz(a)hiig.de by no later than 25 January 2018 with the subject line “AI and Communication Governance”. We would highly appreciate if you could forward this call across your network. Organisers The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) explores the dynamic relationship between the Internet and society, including the increasing interpenetration of digital infrastructures and various domains of everyday life. Its goal is to understand the interplay of social-cultural, legal, economic and technical norms in the process of digitisation. Access Now is an international not-for-profit civil society organisation that defends and extends the digital rights of users at risk around the world. We are a team of 40, with local staff in 10 locations around the world. We maintain four legally incorporated entities – Belgium, Costa Rica, Tunisia, and the United States – with our tech, advocacy, policy, granting, and operations teams distributed across all regions. By combining innovative policy, user engagement, and direct technical support, we fight for open and secure communications for all. Access Now focuses on freedom of expression, privacy and data protection, network discrimination and internet shutdowns, cybersecurity and more. ### -- Dr. Christian Katzenbach Senior Researcher Alexander von Humboldt Institut für Internet für Internet und Gesellschaft | Gesellschaftssitz Berlin | Amtsgericht Berlin Charlottenburg | HRB 140911B | USt-ID DE 27/601/54619 | Geschäftsführung: Prof. Dr. Jeanette Hofmann, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ingolf Pernice, Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Schildhauer, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schulz, Dr. Karina Preiß
