Call for proposals Workshop at the conference Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries 7 March 2018 at the University of Helsinki This workshop seeks to expand critical perspectives on metadata in relation to public cultural heritage image collections online. In our image-saturated time, the definition of therticipatory online practices such as crowdsourcing enable cultural heritage institutions to accelerate the development of digi also be seen as platforms for audience engagement, creating a deep connection to cultural heritage through online collaboration. Furthermore, open data and enhanced standards enabling interoperability might support new forms of collaboration between institutions, researchers, and the general public. However, these participatory open science practices create new challenges due to the character of the networked publics involved and the established structures between and within institutions, but also new opportunities and practices when it comes to understanding and defining our shared images. Therefore, critical perspectives on metadata in relation to photographic collections online are vital. This calls for an interdisciplinary approach in the intersection between computer science, image studies, and cultural studies. For this workshop, therefore, we invite participants to look more closely at different types of participatory practices online in relation to the cultural heritage domain, and at different levels of interaction. Possible sites of analysis could be the interaction between participants, the participation in the work by different stakeholders, the potentially privileged levels of interaction with the metadata, or tensions in the agency of the participants in relation to the task. This half-day workshop explores the topics in mini presentations and brainstorming sessions, and will result in a research agenda for addressing these questions. The position-paper should be 2-4 pages and using the Springer LNCS templates. In this panel we explore the role that these concepts can have in a post-industrial society. Long abstract With the popularization of the Web 2.0 paradigm, digital platforms have become cultural intermediaries in a growing technology mediation environment that has been framed by various scholars as "platform economy". This recent phenomenon has favored the establishment of different "black box" systems that impede us from discovering the inner workings of these new socio-technological brokers. Different self-organized communities and grassroots initiatives have simultaneously appeared thanks to the Internet and the emergence of new makerspaces that have a subset of digital fabrication tools. These groups promote citizen empowerment through technological appropriation and rely on digital commons such as open designs, software and knowledge. In this sense, especially relevant has been the emergence of new discourses aligned with these non-proprietary technologies like open design and manufacturing, which are conceived to promote a radical change in the fabrication towards a more sustainable relationship between production processes and goods. How can digital platforms be designed in order to facilitate encounters between people, things and environments within open design & manufacturing? How can we understand the impact of such digital platforms on society? In this panel we would like to invite authors to analyze the emergence of these phenomena and critically examine the opportunities, contradictions, challenges and tensions that this combination of new tools and mindsets bring for technological appropriation in a post-industrial society. About the Digital Civil Society Lab The Digital Civil Society Lab envisions an independent civil society that thrives in the digital age through the safe, ethical and effective use of private digital resources for public benefit. The Lab is an initiative of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (Stanford PACS). The Lab is led by Lucy Bernholz <https://pacscenter.stanford.edu/staff/lucy-bernholz/>, senior research scholar at Stanford PACS, and Rob Reich <https://pacscenter.stanford.edu/staff/rob-reich/>, professor of Political Science and faculty co-director of Stanford PACS. The rapid adoption of digital tools for social and political action has resulted in a complicated new sphere we refer to as “digital civil society.” Digital civil society encompasses all the ways we voluntarily use private resources for public benefit in the digital age. We see evidence of digital civil society at the intersection of several domains: nonprofits, associations, and philanthropy; market solutions for social good; political action; and digital data and infrastructure. These once-distinct spheres now overlap in ways that require the adoption of a new framework rooted in the unique characteristics of digital resources and the distinctive values of civil society. Digital tools and infrastructure allow individuals to associate, network, express themselves, and mobilize others at lower cost, larger scale, and greater speed than ever before. Access to digital infrastructure, the creation of new digital tools, and smart use of digital data as a resource expand and strengthen the ways we work together for good. Civil society organizations are almost everywhere *digitally dependent* on third party providers for the digital tools and platforms they use. The majority of digital tools and network infrastructure are built and maintained by commercial enterprises that are frequently surveilled by governments. These dependencies challenge the democratic ideal of an *independent* civil society – a space apart from the government and the commercial marketplace. Most people cannot have private conversations digitally, associational activity is more easily tracked than ever before, and private spaces online are accessible only to the technologically skilled. Corporations that provide the platforms on which people express themselves and associate with others are now implicated in protecting and enforcing free speech, association, privacy, and safety. Democratic governments and international declarations of human rights all seek to guarantee the rights of citizens to free expression, association and privacy, even when the precise interpretation of these ideals differ. These basic rights inform our democratic systems and constitute core freedoms for all people. Civil society’s digital dependencies profoundly shift how these rights are experienced. The Lab’s research draws from the humanities, social sciences, engineering, computer science and the law to understand and advance the principles of civil society and democracies in the digital age. About the fellowship We seek to appoint exceptional scholars who are actively engaged in research on topics related to priority research areas, which include: - The key dimensions of digital infrastructure and data and how they influence the role of independent civil society in democracies; - Understanding, creating, and expanding access to software, hardware and digital practices that align with the values of civil society in democracies; - The nature of digital data donations and/or the governance mechanisms, enterprise forms, or legal constructs that such donations require; - The role of digital infrastructure, data, and connectivity and their influence on relationships between governments, markets, and civil society. We encourage applications from candidates representing a broad range of disciplines including the social sciences, humanities, law, computer science and engineering. Ethical considerations of researching Telegram channels

Dear AoIR community, In the spirit of ongoing ethical online data collection and research issues, I'd like to ask if anyone has ever dealt with ethics permissions for research on the messaging platform Telegram. As it is a messenger service, even chats that are in essence "public" still require the researcher to register for a Telegram account and provide a phone number, so one might argue this is an obstacle for interpreting the channels as truly "public". Have any of you grappled with this issue (on Telegram or other similar platforms, e.g. WhatsApp or Viber) and how have you dealt with ethics clearance at your institutions regarding whether this data or these channels can be construed as public or private? I'd really appreciate any experience you could share. Many thanks! Call for papers The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm promises to make "things" such as physical objects with sensing capabilities and/or attached with tags, mobile objects such as smart phones and vehicles, consumer electronic devices and home appliances such as fridge, television, healthcare devices, as part of the Internet environment. In cloud-centric IoT applications, the sensor data from these "things" is extracted, accumulated and processed at the public/private clouds, leading to significant latencies. To satisfy the ever increasing demand for Cloud Computing resources from emerging applications such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), academics and industry experts are now advocating for going from large-centralized Cloud Computing infrastructures to micro data centres located at the edge of the network. These micro data centres are often closer to a user (geographically and in access latency) compared to the centralised cloud data centre. The aim of utilizing such edge resources is to off load computation that would have "traditionally" been carried out at the cloud data centre to a resource that is closer to a user or edge devices. This vision also acknowledges the variation in network latency from an end user to cloud data centre. Whereas the network around a data centre is often high capacity and speed, that near the user device may have variably properties (in terms of resilience, bandwidth, latency, etc). Referred to as "Fog/Edge computing", this paradigm is expected to improve the agility of cloud service deployments in addition to bringing computing resources closer to end-users. On the one hand, the development of Fog and Edge clouds includes dedicated facilities, operating system, network and middleware techniques to build and operate such micro data centres that host virtualized computing resources. On the other hand, the use of Fog and Edge clouds requires extension to current programming models and propose new abstractions that will allow developers to design new applications that take benefit from such massively distributed systems. The use of this approach also opens up other challenges in: security and privacy (as a user now needs to "trust" every micro data centre they interact with), support for resource management for mobile users who transfer session from one micro data centre to another, and support for "embedding" such micro data centres into devices (e.g. cars, buildings, etc.). The conference seeks to attract contributions covering both theory and practice of any of the aforementioned challenges, from the management software stack to domain-specific applications. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may not exceed 10 letter-size (8.5 x 11) pages including all figures, tables and references using the IEEE format for conference proceedings. The official language of the conference is English. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on technical strength, originality, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference attendees. Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is not currently under review for any other conference or journal.
