Do they participate in world-making, and if so how? Could they be utilised not just to close discussions, but also to open up public debate, imagination and experimentation? ## Long abstract This panel is about the world-making capacities of emerging data infrastructures – including their epistemic, social and political possibilities and limitations. It examines how emerging data infrastructures may distribute and redistribute participation in knowledge and world-making across society and culture – from the platform data of big technology companies to open data from public institutions, citizen data, sensor data and associated forms of journalism and activism. How are digital technologies entangled with social practices of classifying, counting, reasoning, narrating and making decisions? Rather than just extending the reach of certain pre-authorised ways of knowing, seeing and dealing with things, how might digital technologies support more substantive forms of interactivity and participation in order to open up public conversations, imagination and experimentation about how data is made and put to work? One of the key strengths of research methods and design approaches developed across STS, participatory design and digital social research has always been their experimentality – the ways in which they seek to combine knowing and doing – representing and intervening in social life – in potentially new, creative ways. This session asks: What distinctive forms of engagement with data infrastructures do these methods and approaches enable, and what is their capacity to contribute to data world-making? This panel organised by the Public Data Lab (http://publicdatalab.org<http://publicdatalab.org/>) will explore the capacity of STS, design and digital methods to take on the challenges outlined above, with the aim of identifying priorities for exploring and intervening around emerging data infrastructures today. *CHI 2018 workshop: HCI for Blockchain: Studying, Designing, Critiquing and Envisioning Distributed Ledger Technologies* This workshop aims to develop a community and agenda within the CHI community to address the emergence of blockchain, and distributed ledger technologies (DLTs). As blockchains rapidly emerge as a general purpose technology, they present exciting, and interdisciplinary, challenges and opportunities for developing new ways for networks of people and things to transact, collaborate, organize and identify themselves. The format of the workshop will be structured firstly around a series of panels, related to: - Studying applications of blockchains - Critiquing blockchains - Designing for and with blockchain technologies - Envisioning blockchain futures These panels will create a space for attendees to present and discuss their work, sharing expertise, as well as common experiences and challenges. Secondly, the workshop will transform these discussions into an active agenda for future HCI research, through a series of working groups to address specific issues and interests. Participants are asked to submit a 3-6 page position papers (in CHI Extended Abstract format, as PDF) – by email to hciforblockchain(a)outlook.com by 26 January 2018 – presenting aspects of their own work (or work-in-progress) relevant to the four core themes of the workshop, and areas of interest described in the proposal. CALL FOR PAPERS PRESENCE 2018 18th conference of the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR) Prague, Czech Republic May 21-22, 2018 (optional demonstrations and guided sightseeing events May 20) https://ispr.info/call-presence-2018 Conference theme: Challenges Submission deadline: February 20, 2018 OVERVIEW Telepresence, often shortened to presence, is a state or perception in which we overlook or misconstrue the role of technology and feel present in the environments and/or connected to the people or things we experience via technology. It´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences and application areas. Following a series of 17 successful Presence conference events (http://ispr.info/presence-conferences/previous-conferences/) PRESENCE 2018 will retain the single-track format and enjoyable social environment of previous conferences while featuring an expanded variety of paper and poster sessions, panel discussions, keynote presentations, hands-on demonstrations of presence applications/services/projects, and informal discussion, networking and fun. Members of both academic and industry communities are welcome. At the end of the first day, all attendees are invited to a social dinner; we also hope you´ll join us for all or part of a day of demonstration visits and guided sightseeing on May 20 (the day before the conference). The registration cost is $140, with a discounted student cost of $100. The fee includes lunches on both days, coffee and snacks during breaks, and the social dinner. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The term presence has many formal and informal meanings but is used by a growing interdisciplinary scholarly community to refer to experiences in which technology is overlooked or misconstrued in some way during a mediated experience. Long a focus of those who study virtual reality and environments, it´s increasingly relevant to a wide range of media experiences. For example, presence occurs when we get "lost" in the world of a novel, TV show, movie, video game or theme park ride; we´re convinced by the realism of paintings or graphic designs; we treat our cars, computers or other machines as if they have personalities of their own, and we feel like we´re "with" a person we talk to on the phone or in a video conference. The presence research community has been working to identify causes, characteristics and consequences of diverse presence experiences. The consequences identified so far - including arousal/relaxation, empathy, enjoyment, persuasion and more - make clear the importance and power of presence to improve communication across a wide variety of contexts and applications of interest to scholars and those who create media technologies and content. Presence as a concept and set of phenomena is related to the work being done in nearly every field and business sector from art to zoology, with particularly direct applications in business, education, entertainment and health. The 4000+ posts in ISPR Presence News (http://ispr.info/posts) and thousands more on its predecessor, the presence-l listserv (listserv.temple.edu/archives/presence-l.html) along with the Presence Bibliography on the ISPR website (http://ispr.info) illustrate the breadth of presence applications, and the breadth, depth and value of presence scholarship. The objectives of the conference are to deepen and update the knowledge of those already familiar with presence and introduce new scholars and practitioners to the centrality, pervasiveness, and value of presence phenomena, theory and research. The overarching goal is to help integrate and increase collaborative scholarship on presence. SUBMISSIONS Topics We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of presence phenomena and applications in any/every aspect of life. While the scale of problematic online content makes a stronger move reasonable, taking down content through automated means can be risky for online expression and access to information. And a few EU members states have already responded with new regulatory initiatives. Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Social Theory in Information Systems Research (STIR ’18) Track: Social Inclusion (SIGSI) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA This minitrack solicits papers using social theory to critically examine ICTs and their roles in enabling and constraining social inclusion. What can be done to improve access to computing for underrepresented groups? In what ways do new technologies impact digital divides? What are the social, cultural, political, and economic implications of the Internet of things? These are examples of the kinds of questions we are interested in exploring in this minitrack. We are particularly interested in completed or emerging research using social theory to address the conference theme, Digital Disruption, critically examining the ways in which emerging technologies are changing the sociotechnical landscape in ways that narrow or widen the digital divide. This will be the 18th consecutive year for STIR, and we hope to continue a tradition of high quality papers, and thought-provoking and lively discussion for IS researchers using social theory in their work. Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Shadow Information Technologies and Practices Track: Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA Shadow Information Technologies and Practices is a new mini-track in the Organizational Transformation and Information Systems (SIGORSA) track. This mini-track solicits papers that address the socio-technical implications, outcomes, and disruptive nature of shadow information technology (shadow IT) and shadow practices of organizational actors within complex organizations. Shadow IT refers to artifacts that are used or developed within organizations outside of and without the approval and knowledge of an organization’s IT department. Socio-technical shadow practices, also known as feral practices, are those in which organizational actors engage with either shadow IT or existing systems in ways that differ from the expected practices, and which take place unbeknownst to organizational and IT managers. The emergence of shadow IT and practices can have broad socio-technical implications for organizations, including those related to organizational power relations, IT governance, and security. Given the theme of the conference, Digital Disruption, we are particularly interested in papers that examine the emergence of shadow IT and practices in response to the introduction and digital disruption of new technologies within business and organizations. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have paved the way for generating huge amount of diverse, streaming bit data in a short period of time. Such social media data require the application of big data analytics to produce meaningful information to both information consumers and data generators. Machine learning and AI techniques are particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from such social media data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing. Following the discussion at our workshop at WWW2017, we aim to focus on how to apply machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems for analytics and predictive modeling on social media and the web. Contrary to last year’s workshop, we would like to particularly invite researchers that are interested in going beyond standard analytics approaches and try to discover the intelligent information hidden in the large and fast-changing social media data. In this context, we would also like to invite researchers in the machine learning, AI, natural language processing, data and web mining community to lend their expertise to help to increase our understanding of the web and social media. Overall, we are interested in receiving papers related to the following topics which include but are not limited to: • learning analytics methods or frameworks for social media, big data and the web • AI, machine learning and NLP techniques for social media, big data and the web • deep learning approaches and models for social media, big data and the web • approaches for social influence learning • learning methods for social link prediction • methods for learning social activities and behavioral analytic metrics • machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems • evaluation of machine learning and AI frameworks and metrics • applications of machine learning and AI • applications of any of the above methods and technologies The goal of this workshop is to apply machine learning and AI approaches and algorithms on social media, big data and the web. Submissions: We solicit full research papers (4-8 pages), and short papers (1-4 pages) both in the ACM conference paper style. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=www2018satellites Proceedings: ============ Contributions will be included in the Companion volume of TheWebConf 2018 conference, which will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. However, to make that happen at least one author of the accepted paper has to register. At the time of submission of the final camera-ready copy, authors will have to indicate the already registered person for that publication. Any paper published by the ACM, IEEE, etc. which can be properly cited constitutes research which must be considered in judging the novelty of a TheWebConf submission, whether the published paper was in a conference, journal, or workshop. Therefore, any paper previously published as part of a WWW or TheWebConf workshop must be referenced and suitably extended with new content to qualify as a new submission to the Research Track at TheWebConf conference. Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must * be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; * occupy no more than six pages, including the abstract, references, and appendices.
