CfP3: The politics of metadata in participatory approaches: Opportunities, practices, and conflicts (DHN 2018)
by Karin Hansson 29 Jan '18

29 Jan '18

Third call for proposals Workshop at the conference Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries 7 March 2018 at the University of Helsinki This workshop seeks to expand critical perspectives on metadata in relation to public cultural heritage image collections online. In our image-saturated time, the definition of therticipatory online practices such as crowdsourcing enable cultural heritage institutions to accelerate the development of digi also be seen as platforms for audience engagement, creating a deep connection to cultural heritage through online collaboration. Furthermore, open data and enhanced standards enabling interoperability might support new forms of collaboration between institutions, researchers, and the general public. However, these participatory open science practices create new challenges due to the character of the networked publics involved and the established structures between and within institutions, but also new opportunities and practices when it comes to understanding and defining our shared images. Therefore, critical perspectives on metadata in relation to photographic collections online are vital. This calls for an interdisciplinary approach in the intersection between computer science, image studies, and cultural studies. For this workshop, therefore, we invite participants to look more closely at different types of participatory practices online in relation to the cultural heritage domain, and at different levels of interaction. Possible sites of analysis could be the interaction between participants, the participation in the work by different stakeholders, the potentially privileged levels of interaction with the metadata, or tensions in the agency of the participants in relation to the task. This half-day workshop explores the topics in mini presentations and brainstorming sessions, and will result in a research agenda for addressing these questions. The position-paper should be 2-4 pages and using the Springer LNCS templates. Send submissions and inquiries to the following email address: politics-of-metadata(a)googlegroups.com<mailto:politics-of-metadata@googlegroups.com> Deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018. 2018 Carl Couch Internet Research Award
by Sarina Chen 26 Jan '18

26 Jan '18

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2018 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Dr. Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Dr. Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Dr. Shing-Ling Sarina Chen, University of Northern Iowa Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Shing-Ling Sarina Chen, sarina.chen(a)uni.edu. Application deadline is April 1, 2018. Notification of award will be sent by September 1. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Shing-Ling Sarina Chen Lang Hall 326 Dept. of Communication Studies Univ. of Northern Iowa Cedar Falls, IA 50614 USA sarina.chen(a)uni.edu

Just Out: Second MoneyLab Reader
by Geert Lovink 26 Jan '18

26 Jan '18

The Institute of Network Cultures proudly presents the Second MoneyLab Reader, Overcoming the Hype. MoneyLab is a network of artists, activists, and geeks experimenting with forms of financial democratization. Entering the 10th year of the global financial crisis, it still remains a difficult yet crucial task to distinguish old wine from its fancy new bottles. Founded in 2013, the MoneyLab network questions persistent beliefs, from Calvinist austerity, growth, and up-scaling, to trustless, automated decision making and (anarcho-)capitalist dreams of cybercurrencies and blockchained solutionism. We consider experiments with digital coops, internet-based payment and network-based revenue models as spaces of political imagination, with an equally important aesthetic program. In this second MoneyLab Reader the network delves into topics like the financialization of art; love as a binary proposition on the blockchain; the crowdfunding of livelihood; the cashless society; financial surveillance of the poor; universal basic income as the real McCoy or a real sham; the cooperative answer to Airbnb and Uber; the history of your financial dashboard; and, Hollywood’s narration of the financial crisis. Fintech rushes through our veins, causing a whirlwind of critical concepts, ideas and imaginaries. Welcome to the eye of the storm.
