From the VNS Matrix’ Cyberfeminist Manifesto to Laboria Cuboniks’ Xenofeminist Manifesto, Australian feminists have been at the forefront of experimental and radical scholarship and practice. While concepts from cyberfeminism and xenofeminism are now transnational, their uniquely situated histories within genealogies of feminist technoscience warrants further engagement. This open panel invites papers reflecting on Australian feminist technoscience “post-cyber feminism.” What mutations have occurred over time? By mutation, we refer to the transmission, variation and corruption of ideas and approaches to “doing” feminist theory and practice. Mutations call to attention changes in situated material contexts, in this case, the specific material-semiotic assemblages of time/place/people/events we call “Australia.” The questions we seek to address include: What are the uniquely Australian histories of feminist technoscience? How do these intersect with other forms of Australian feminisms, such as Aboriginal, postcolonial, queer? How can we think “xeno”-politics in a settler-colonising society? How do seemingly disparate movements in contemporary art, fiction, philosophy, and feminism draw on, respond to, and critically resist Australian cyberfeminism, and how has Australian cyberfeminism mutated in response to these? How have changing political, material, and technological conditions altered the field of cyberfeminism, perhaps necessitating the expanded taxonomy of what Helen Hester recently called “post-cyber feminism”? Call for Papers: Political Polarization Workshop – Social Media and Political Polarization in Non-U.S. Contexts Workshop to be held in conjunction with Conference on E-Democracy and Open Government Asia 2018 (CeDEM Asia 2018) Conference dates: July 12-13th, 2018 Location: Yokohama, Japan Confirmed keynotes: Shanto Iyengar, Stanford University Francis Lee, Chinese University of Hong Kong Workshop Chairs: Tetsuro Kobayashi and Marko M. Skoric Social media allow us to tune in selectively to the sources that share our partisan and ideological leanings, potentially resulting in attitudinal and affective political polarization. Although selective exposure has been well documented in both experimental and observational studies, with few exceptions, most extant research has been conducted in the United States. The high level of ideological polarization in the U.S. may be idiosyncratic from a global perspective, so cross-cultural investigation is necessary for assessing the generalizability of the findings. This panel specifically focuses on the relationship of social media use and political polarization in non-U.S. contexts, broadly defined. We are particularly interested in studies examining the role of social media in political polarization in emerging democracies, semi-democracies, and authoritarian states in Asia. The topics for this panel may include, but are not limited to: 1. Survey studies on the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 2. Experimental studies testing the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 3. Cross-national studies examining the generalizability of the association between social media use and political polarization. Full papers for the workshop are due on February 15, 2018 and should have a length of 6,000-8,000 words (excluding tables, figures, and references). To ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer-review for submissions to this conference, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors being known to reviewers. The authors of the document shall replace their names in the text, references, footnotes and metadata with "authors" only. The deadline for all three volumes is February 12, 2018. *CITAMS@30 * This special anniversary volume commemorates the 30th anniversary of the CITAMS section. Submissions are welcome that explore any topic relevant to the thirty-year section history or the future of the section in years to come. Topics include but are not limited to communication, information technologies, and media sociology. Guest editors are Wenhong Chen and Barry Wellman. * Call for Theorizing the Digital: Social Theory and Digital Culture* We welcome submissions using a wide variety of data and analytic techniques, assuming they are rigorously employed. We also welcome theoretical submissions, assuming they focus squarely on the topic of the volume. Methodological papers will be considered as long as they are grounded in theoretical concerns. The scope of the volume is wide and includes application of classical and contemporary theorists in media contexts. Any topic that engages the volume’s theme is welcome. The conference is an interdisciplinary gathering of social media researchers, practitioners, and analysts from around the world. The 2018 conference is hosted by the Centre for Business Data Analytics at the Copenhagen Business School. In 2012, in the wake of Occupy and the Arab Spring, the #SMSociety community explored networked influence and virality, and saw social media and viral events as a democratizing force. Fast forward five years and we find ourselves in quite a different, some would argue, darker social media landscape where those same democratizing forces are now being exploited in ways we could not foresee. With the rapid change on social media platforms and their affordances, the heightened emphasis on mobile and visual communication, the rise of bots, and the increased participation of state actors, we believe it is time to revisit the ideas of Networked Influence and Virality once more! Powered by networked influence and made possible by privately owned social media platforms, we are said to be in a sharing economy. We are now owning less and sharing more, giving and receiving crowdsourced content, adapting, innovating, remaking, and re-sharing original and remixed materials. New attitudes, practices, and legal precedents about ownership, rights, and information evaluation are emerging with the growing use of social media. The joys of sharing and connecting through social media-as amateur music videos inspire responses and the sharing of cute animal videos brings joy to millions-are tempered with concerns about the manipulation and exploitation of social media platforms. Hateful, anti-social speech, coordinated misinformation campaigns (i.e. "fake news") and "false flag" operation by actors unknown now dominate the news cycle and compete for an opportunity to "go viral." Considering the rapid changes in social media environments, use, and users, the conference organizers invite scholarly and original submissions that relate to the 2018 theme of "Networked Influence and Virality." We welcome both quantitative and qualitative work which crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media research, especially those that explore some of the questions and issues raised below: * How do ideas spread online? What are the outcomes of the viral spread of news, memes, content, and creative production? * Who are the new influencers and power players in the information landscape of social media? * How important are bots in this landscape? Some of the material impacts of data infrastructures can be felt in our everyday lives through interactions with location awareness and transportation apps, music recommender systems, health tracking and grocery store checkouts. And yet, after decades of infrastructure studies, STS methods and theories are increasingly stretched to accommodate the scale and rate at which data infrastructures manifest. As systems of governance, social justice, commerce and warfare are embedded in and utterly reliant upon data infrastructures, the stakes could not be higher. This panel invites contributions that engage with the methodological challenges associated with investigating socio-technical invisibilities in digital data infrastructures. Here we envisage invisibilities to encompass the context of wide-ranging socio-technical relations that enable and disable access to data infrastructures, from black-boxed algorithms and internet protocols to labour and organisational structures. The panel welcomes critical reflection on the ontological and material implications of the ways in which invisibility in data infrastructures is conceptualised in STS, and by extension, operationalised into methods and methodological interventions. We invite creative methodological contributions to STS that reconfigure and extend existing concepts to develop ways of engaging with varying types and degrees of access and absence in digital infrastructures – where even the barriers themselves may become the subject of study. Call for Participation: ---- CHI 2018 Workshop - “Grand Visions” for Post-Capitalist HCI Montréal, Canada, Saturday 21st April 2018. Submission deadline: 2nd February 2018. http://hci.post-capitalist.com ---- It is acknowledged that all digital technology is designed, whether knowingly or not, to fit a specific worldview or political stance. For example “sharing economy” services such as Uber or AirBnB, support a Silicon Valley-centric future devoid of state regulation and anti-monopoly legislation. As a community, we must question to what end are we improving the efficiency, efficacy and satisfaction of interactions. Are our goals any different to that of entrepreneurs? New technology is typically proposed as a way of cutting costs, removing or lowering the need for human work. Yet it is rare to see technology designed towards a future in which making money is not a key concern – it seems to be currently beyond our collective imagination. In this workshop we wish to counteract this. We wish to convene academics, artists, designers, and developers to explore the interstices of HCI and post-capitalism, and design to support and facilitate a post-capitalist future. We welcome one of two formats of submission: 1) A two-page ACM Extended Abstract format position paper 2) A short video submission (2-4 minutes) along with a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Both submission formats should outline the authors’ motivations, ideas and potential designs for the workshop. Examples of topics include: tools to enable greater civic participation, technologies and systems to remove corporate/financial influence, how fully automated luxury communism might work, tools to suppress the rise of capitalism, disrupting the marginalisation of vulnerable populations, approaches to encourage communism and the emancipation of big data. We ask the authors to indicate how many authors will attend the workshop as places are limited. All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI conference. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection  - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use  *Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. The description should include: i) description of the topic, ii) biographies of the panel members, ii) organization of the panel. It is a requirement that panels focus tightly on a specific emergent topic, technology, phenomena, policy, or the like, with clear connections between the presentations. CFP Journal of Peer Production DEADLINE EXTENDED

Apologies, my previous post contained an error concerning the new dates. PEER PRODUCTION: RESEARCH AND PRACTICE The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run peer-reviewed journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. JoPP is an open-access journal that allows readers to read, download, copy, distribute and link to the full texts of articles. Authors license works under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) and retain full copyright in their work. In terms of research, we have published ten landmark issues exploring the interconnection of peer production with activism, political economy, bio and hardware hacking, free software, value and currency, shared machine shops, the law, state policies, feminism and queer issues, alternative infrastructures, and waged labour. We will publish our eleventh issue on peer production and urbanism in January 2018 and our twelfth on the institutionalisation of shared machine shops in May 2018. In terms of practice, we have debated policy decisions on a public and archived mailing list. We have renovated the scientific peer review system by publishing not only reviews of papers, but also – in order to fully appreciate the impact of reviews – original submissions of articles. We have launched a “signalling” system so that imperfect articles can be published rapidly, whilst maintaining the standards and reputation of the journal. Having defined the field of peer production studies and put into practice peer production principles, we now seek to foster new avenues and partnerships. We are calling this new phase in the development of the Journal of Peer Production “OPEN”. At the root of “OPEN” is the fact that we now live in an era where exclusion and inequality are being justified by overtly racist, even fascist, ideas. It is therefore more important than ever for progressives to develop viable alternatives to plutocracy and environmental destruction which highlight peer values such as inclusion and openness. There are two parts to JoPP “OPEN”: “OPEN” EOI and “OPEN” CFP. JOPP: “OPEN” EOI We are calling for “OPEN” editorial Expressions of Interest from people wanting to develop their own take on peer production. This means we are offering our website and network of reviewers for the production and dissemination of activist or scientific interventions in the field of peer production. We are open to accounts of projects, to explorations of special interests, to analysis of the “infrastructures of the commons” (universal income systems, cooperatives and unions, free public services), etc. We are particularly interested in initiatives that would disseminate peer production knowledge and values to audiences beyond the academic and activist communities.
