Second call for proposals Workshop at the conference Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries 7 March 2018 at the University of Helsinki This workshop seeks to expand critical perspectives on metadata in relation to public cultural heritage image collections online. In our image-saturated time, the definition of therticipatory online practices such as crowdsourcing enable cultural heritage institutions to accelerate the development of digi also be seen as platforms for audience engagement, creating a deep connection to cultural heritage through online collaboration. Furthermore, open data and enhanced standards enabling interoperability might support new forms of collaboration between institutions, researchers, and the general public. However, these participatory open science practices create new challenges due to the character of the networked publics involved and the established structures between and within institutions, but also new opportunities and practices when it comes to understanding and defining our shared images. Therefore, critical perspectives on metadata in relation to photographic collections online are vital. This calls for an interdisciplinary approach in the intersection between computer science, image studies, and cultural studies. For this workshop, therefore, we invite participants to look more closely at different types of participatory practices online in relation to the cultural heritage domain, and at different levels of interaction. Possible sites of analysis could be the interaction between participants, the participation in the work by different stakeholders, the potentially privileged levels of interaction with the metadata, or tensions in the agency of the participants in relation to the task. This half-day workshop explores the topics in mini presentations and brainstorming sessions, and will result in a research agenda for addressing these questions. The position-paper should be 2-4 pages and using the Springer LNCS templates. PEER PRODUCTION: RESEARCH AND PRACTICE The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run peer-reviewed journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. JoPP is an open-access journal that allows readers to read, download, copy, distribute and link to the full texts of articles. Authors license works under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) and retain full copyright in their work. In terms of research, we have published ten landmark issues exploring the interconnection of peer production with activism, political economy, bio and hardware hacking, free software, value and currency, shared machine shops, the law, state policies, feminism and queer issues, alternative infrastructures, and waged labour. We will publish our eleventh issue on peer production and urbanism in January 2018 and our twelfth on the institutionalisation of shared machine shops in May 2018. In terms of practice, we have debated policy decisions on a public and archived mailing list. We have renovated the scientific peer review system by publishing not only reviews of papers, but also – in order to fully appreciate the impact of reviews – original submissions of articles. We have launched a “signalling” system so that imperfect articles can be published rapidly, whilst maintaining the standards and reputation of the journal. *Having defined the field of peer production studies and put into practice peer production principles, we now seek to foster new avenues and partnerships.* We are calling this new phase in the development of the Journal of Peer Production “OPEN”. At the root of “OPEN” is the fact that we now live in an era where exclusion and inequality are being justified by overtly racist, even fascist, ideas. It is therefore more important than ever for progressives to develop viable alternatives to plutocracy and environmental destruction which highlight peer values such as inclusion and openness. *There are two parts to JoPP “OPEN”: “OPEN” EOI and “OPEN” CFP.* JOPP: “OPEN” EOI *We are calling for “OPEN” editorial Expressions of Interest from people wanting to develop their own take on peer production.* This means we are offering our website and network of reviewers for the production and dissemination of activist or scientific interventions in the field of peer production. I’ve already taken the excellent introduction by Jean Burgess and Alex Burns through the FutureLearn site where they focus on data collection and analysis via TAGS, Tableau and Gephi. Dear Colleagues, I want to bring your attention to two opportunities to participate in this year's International Federation of Information Processing’s 24th World Congress (http://wcc2018.put.poznan.pl) held in Poznan, Poland from 17 to 21 September 2018. The first opportunity is a workshop sponsored by the Human Choice and Computers Technical Committee (TC 9) and is entitled “This Changes Everything” (http://hcc13.net) Although there will be several groups with various themes represented at this workshop, I most want to bring your attention to the track devoted to the history of computing (http://ifipwg97.org/workshops/hcc13/) The deadline for draft papers is at the end of this month. Secondly, IFIP's History of Computing Working Group (WG 9.7) is sponsoring a separate workshop covering Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe (http://ifipwg97.org/workshops/eastern-europe/) In addition to traditional paper sessions, this workshop will feature a remote demonstration of the Bomba created by Alan Turing. In order to honor the effort of Polish cryptographers during the war, a message enciphered using Enigma coding will be transmitted to Bletchley Park, decoded using the replica Bombe, and sent back to Poznan. The deadline for draft papers to be considered for this workshop is 1 May 2018. Please consider being a part of either or both of these workshops. In this capacity, the postdoctoral researcher will be in charge or contribute to study design, qualitative and quantitative data collection, literature reviews, policy analyses and normative analyses. Moreover he/she will take the lead or collaborate in the publication of research results. The selected candidate is also expected to help in the dissemination of research activities by collaborating to the organization of academic events, by taking part in scientific conferences, and by curating content for blogs and social media platforms.
