WebSci 2018 Ethics Workshop: Request for participation
by Michael T Zimmer 25 Jan '18

25 Jan '18

Dear colleagues, Along with my AoIR Ethics Working Group co-chairs, Charles Ess and Anja Bechmann, I am excited to announce the Web Science 2018 Ethics Workshop: “Confronting Ethical Challenges in Web Science Research“, scheduled for Sunday 27 May 2018 at VU Amsterdam. https://websci18ethicsworkshop.wordpress.com/ This half-day workshop, organized by the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Ethics Working Group in partnership with the PERVADE: Pervasive Data Ethics project, will foster community engagement with the ethical challenges faced by web science researchers working with big data sources, including from social media platforms, health apps, internet of things, and related pervasive data sets. The growing prevalence of data-rich networked information technologies, such as the internet of things, wearable devices, ubiquitous sensing, and social sharing platforms, brings a similar increase in the flow of rich, deep, and often identifiable personal information. These data flows— across devices, platforms, and between users—are increasingly available to computational and web science researchers to capture and process to discover new insights about how all these domains intersect. The growth in the scale, scope, speed, and depth of data-intensive computational activities, however, requires that we continuously confront the ethical frameworks and assumptions that guide web science research agenda now, and in the future. The Web Science 2018 Ethics Workshop builds on substantive lessons learned and insights gained from recent workshops organized by the AoIR Ethics Working Group in Aarhus, Denmark, Tartu, Estonia, and Oslo, Norway. Call for Papers and Participation: https://websci18ethicsworkshop.wordpress.com/call-for-papers/ ** Participants need not submit papers or cases to attend the workshop — all are welcome to attend and contribute to the conversation! We are accepting two types of submissions for participation in this workshop: Position Papers: Position papers should focus on an ethical challenge in web science research, as introduced above, including but not limited to: (a) in-depth discussion of one’s research that brought unique ethical dilemmas to bear, and how such concerns were (or might be) addressed; (b) research studies specifically related to ethics in the web science community; or (c) description of a particular approach to research ethics and/or resolving ethical concerns within the web science context. Position papers should be no more than 5-8 pages and should be submitted in ACM double-column format. Accepted papers will be included in the WebSci’18 Workshop Proceedings. Case Studies: Case studies should be no more than 3 pages, and include the description of (real or hypothetical) cases that present particular ethical challenges among web science researchers. Cases will not be included in the workshop proceedings, but if accepted will be shared on the workshop website for other participants. Submission Instructions Position Papers must be formatted according to the official ACM SIG Conference Proceedings. See http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template (From the zip files provided, please select the SIGCONF version.) All submissions should be emailed to websci18ethicsworkshop(a)gmail.com. The submission deadline is Sunday 25 February 2018 at 20:00 EST. Important Dates • Sunday 25 February 2018 – Submission deadline • Sunday 25 March 2018 – Notification of acceptance • Sunday 29 April 2018 – Camera-ready papers due for WebSci’18 Workshop Proceedings (Position Papers only) • Sunday 27th May 2018 – Workshop date We hope to see many of you there! Post-Capitalist HCI – CHI 2018 Workshop - Call for Participation
by Tom Feltwell 25 Jan '18

25 Jan '18

---- “Grand Visions” for Post-Capitalist HCI - CHI 2018 Workshop Montréal, Canada, Saturday 21st April 2018. Submission deadline: 2nd February 2018. http://hci.post-capitalist.com ---- This workshop aims to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners to explore an alternative, post-capitalist, “grand vision” for HCI, primarily asking what kind of futures the community sees itself as working towards. Much in the tradition of design fiction or experiential futures at CHI, all attendees at the workshop will engage in the design and prototyping of diegetic objects that help us suspend our disbelief about a future society. At the same time, the prototypes generated during the workshop will embody each other’s ideas and, in turn, facilitate presentation and discussion. Importantly the focus of the workshop is on things not words – it is not a space to debate philosophies of post-capitalism and HCI, but a space to speculatively design technology which demonstrate these ideas. We welcome one of two formats of submission: * A two-page ACM Extended Abstract format position paper or * A short video submission (2-4 minutes) along with a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Both submission formats should outline the authors’ motivations, ideas and potential designs for the workshop. Examples of topics include: tools to enable greater civic participation, technologies and systems to remove corporate/financial influence, how fully automated luxury communism might work, tools to suppress the rise of capitalism, disrupting the marginalisation of vulnerable populations, approaches to encourage communism and the emancipation of big data. We ask the authors to indicate how many authors will attend the workshop as places are limited. All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI conference. Format: Either 2 page ACM Extended Abstract or 2-4 minute video with 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Full details available: http://hci.post-capitalist.com/submission Deadline: 2nd February 2018 Notification: 22nd February 2018 Workshop: 21st April 2018, Montréal, Canada, as part of CHI 2018 (https://chi2018.acm.org/) ----- Tom Feltwell, Senior Research Assistant, NorSC Lab Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK This message is intended solely for the addressee and may contain confidential and/or legally privileged information. Fwd: CFP: The Place I Call Research: Localizing Sociological Inquiry Manchester, June 15, 2018
by Jaime García Iglesias 24 Jan '18

24 Jan '18

The Place I Call Research: Localizing Sociological Inquiry The University of Manchester, June 15, 2018 Call for Papers Despite the recent focus in social sciences on situating one’s research, the actual process of selecting and navigating particular community contexts remains a difficult task. The reconfiguring of local spaces into sites of research is particularly relevant now, as the internet and new media blur previously taken-for-granted boundaries and processes of localization. This conference seeks to engage researchers across the social sciences and humanities to discuss the role of places in their work. In particular, we are interested in exploring the ways in which methodologies are contextualized to tackle both new spaces and ‘old’ spaces in the flux of change. However we are also attentive to the interaction between researchers and the larger community regarding those spaces, such as public policy development that is contextually bound and the impact of business models in the alteration and creation of places. The conference will take place at the University of Manchester on 15 June 2018. It is an all-day event which will feature both academic papers and public events including a roundtable with community members, a public screening, and an exhibition. Attendance is free. We welcome submissions for 15 minute papers from doctoral and masters’ students and early-career researchers across multiple disciplines, especially sociology, anthropology, economics, politics, geography, public health, and cultural studies. Some of the conference’s key themes are: - new and old spaces: queer, postcolonial and online contexts - addressing changing political and social contexts in our research - urban/rural dichotomies - place ownership, no-place, and homelessness - how social, cultural, and community challenges affect fieldwork - developing community-specific methodologies and research questions - how theories and knowledges are context-specific, as well as the potential for trans-contextual research Abstract submissions should be between 150 and 300 words and include five keywords. Creative research methodologies are welcomed. Scholars are encouraged to reflect on local engagement in their papers. EASST 2018 Conference - Panel: STS meet ICT: politics and the collaborative turn in STS
by Becky Lentz 24 Jan '18

24 Jan '18

Dear all, We invite you to submit an abstract to our open panel – STS meet ICT: politics and the collaborative turn in STS – at the EASST 2018 Conference <https://easst2018.easst.net/home> , 25-28th July, 2018, Lancaster, UK. Convenors: Mariacristina Sciannamblo ( Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute ) - cristina.sciannamblo(a)m-iti.org Maurizio Teli ( Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute ) - maurizio.teli(a)m-iti.org Chris Csikszentmihalyi ( Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute ) - csik(a)m-iti.org Peter Lyle ( Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute ) - peter.lyle(a)m-iti.org (C23) STS meet ICT: politics and the collaborative turn in STS Short abstract This panel wants to focus on the collaborative and committed orientation of STS (Science and Technology Studies) by exploring its interplay with the broad field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This relationship entails different forms of meeting: disciplinary, epistemological, institutional, and local alliances. Long abstract The increasing prominence of critical approaches - e.g. feminist and postcolonial STS - and the intersections with surrounding fields - e.g. participatory design, information science, and critical technical practice - have stressed the politically engaged character of STS, emphasizing its "activist interest" (Sismondo, 2008). Such growing interest in collaborative modes of practicing STS has suggested the emergence of a "collaborative turn" in STS (Farías, 2017). This panel wants to focus on such collaborative orientation of STS by exploring its interplay with the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This relationship entails diverse forms of meeting such as the disciplinary intersection of STS with design studies and information science; the epistemological meeting between STS and critical perspectives; the making of new alliances between researchers, activists and local population; the convergence of institutional interests and research practices to promote alternative sociotechnical infrastructures. This panel seeks interdisciplinary contributions that explore the politics in and of the relationship between STS and ICT, from experiences of local and community activism to large-scale examples of alternative sociotechnical infrastructures. Topics relevant for this panel may include: - ICT, labor, and precariousness - Hacktivism, community networks, and alternative Internet - Post-colonial and anti-colonial computing - Feminist interventions in ICT - Commons, peer production, and platform cooperativism - Interplay between publics, researchers, and institutions This panel aims at fostering interdisciplinary encounters, in the light of potential shared publication opportunities, likes journal special issues or edited books, in order to foster the politically engaged STS agenda in the relationship with ICT. > Paper proposals should be submitted through the panel website : https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6275 > Submissions should include <https://easst2018.easst.net/call-for-papers> : a paper title, name/s and email address/es of author/s, a short abstract of fewer than 300 characters, a long abstract of fewer than 250 words > Deadline for submission: February 14, 2018 (23:59 CEU)
