CFP 'Rethinking Affordance' – special issue of Media Theory and symposium (expr. of interest due Jan 29)
by Martin Zeilinger 18 Jan '18

18 Jan '18

— with apologies for cross-posting — Call for Papers: Rethinking Affordance Special Issue (Media Theory) & Symposium (Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, June 8 - 9 2018) Co-editors and co-organisers: Ashley Scarlett and Martin Zeilinger Abstracts and expressions of interest due by: January 29th, 2018 Responding to the continued and accelerating rise of algorithmic culture, this journal special issue and corresponding symposium will explore critical intersections between creative practice and recent efforts to re-imagine the concept of ‘affordance’ for the digital. Theoretical considerations of ‘affordance’ originate at the intersection of perceptual and cognitive psychology, specifically within the context of J.J. Gibson’s work from the mid-60s onwards. According to Gibson, ‘affordance’ sought to account for the actionable properties of a physical object or environment. An object’s affordances, in other words, describe its phenomenological qualities, projecting potential uses, delimiting possible actions, and signaling perceived functions. While discontinuities between established discourses on ‘affordance’ and its contemporary deployment have been widely identified and problematized (e.g., Evans et. al. 2017; Davis & Chouinard 2017; Samson & Soon 2015; Nagy & Neff 2015), the theoretical parameters of specifically digital affordances remain under-examined. As a result, despite its frequent application within the domains of, for example, HCI, media studies and contemporary design, ‘affordance’ continues to operate within a conceptual framework that largely ignores the specific grounds of contemporary computation, resting instead on the physicality, phenomenological accessibility, and perceived liveliness of objects (e.g., Wells 2002; Morineau et. al. 2009). Importantly, each of these defining characteristics are fundamentally incompatible with what are increasingly referred to as the processual, ‘deep,’ and unperceivable realities of algorithmic systems (Lovink 2014; Parisi 2013; Zielinski 2009). Deploying the concept of affordance without a reexamination of its digital specificity (for example when it comes to interaction design, user experience design, or software development) ultimately means to foreclose opportunities for generative critique, limiting the potential for creative, alternative, subversive, and radically different uses of digital artefacts and processes. In an effort to delineate and address gaps in contemporary criticism, our aim is to re-examine and correspondingly re-theorize the concept of ‘affordance.’ Because ‘affordance’ is often positioned at intersections of design and implementation, we are particularly interested in approaches that bridge or combine theoretical and practice-based concerns. As the history of art reveals, artists’ and designers’ access to emerging digital technologies has always informed their scientific, industrial, commercial and rhetorical development (Patterson 2015; Kane 2014). We therefore invite both media theorists and media practitioners (artists, designers, curators, etc.) to join us in exploring the critical historical and contemporary valences of ‘affordance,’ by proposing and submitting essays, artist position statements, and symposium presentations that engage with the following intersecting areas of inquiry: - Explorations of the historical and contemporary roles artists have played in shaping and delimiting the affordances of emerging digital technologies; - Theorization of the contemporary realization of 'affordance' across and within digital and algorithmic contexts; and - Analyses of how creative practice can inform a critical rethinking of existing philosophies of affordance. Interested parties are encouraged to send a 300-word abstract to rethinking.affordance(a)gmail.com <mailto:rethinking.affordance@gmail.com> by January 29th, 2018. Authors will be notified of acceptance in early February. The Rethinking Affordance symposium is scheduled to take place at Akademie Schloss Solitude from June 8th – 9th (http://www.akademie-solitude.de <http://www.akademie-solitude.de/>). The symposium will serve both as a presentation and workshopping platform. It is scheduled to take place in conjunction with a thematically aligned exhibition and web-residency. Participants will be provided with accommodations for the duration of the symposium. Small travel bursaries intended to partially subsidize participation may also be available. Symposium presenters will be invited to submit their longer research essays (6,000-8,000 words inclusive of notes and references) and/or shorter critical position statements for peer-reviewed inclusion in a corresponding special issue of the journal Media Theory (http://mediatheoryjournal.org/ <http://mediatheoryjournal.org/>). Full papers for peer-review will be due July 15, 2018 with a projected publication date of early 2019. CFP: Understanding "Bad Actors" Online (CHI 2018 workshop)
by lindsay blackwell 18 Jan '18

18 Jan '18

Dear AoIRists, We invite academic researchers, industry practitioners, and social activists interested in online harassment, hate speech, and other forms of online misbehavior to a one-day workshop at CHI 2018: *Understanding "Bad Actors" OnlineSaturday, April 21 in Montr**é**al, Canada* *Apply by February 2: understandingbadactors.org <http://understandingbadactors.org/>* Social media platforms typically seek to diminish bad behavior by restricting perpetrators’ access, imposing strong penalties, or outright disabling accounts. But who are “bad actors?” Do they understand community standards, or even which policies their actions have violated? How do they participate in other social media sites and online communities? What values and experiences shape their interactions online? By listening to the experiences and needs of policy violators, we can 1) identify the roadblocks that prevent “bad actors” from complying with community standards; 2) help them discover more appropriate ways of connecting with others online; and 3) design more effective interventions to reduce the impact of these behaviors on other users. We are hosting a one-day workshop at CHI 2018 focused on understanding the experiences, perspectives, and motivations of people who engage in bad behavior online—including harassment, hate speech, and spam—to generate research and design strategies for prevention, punishment, and remediation. We invite submissions from academic researchers, industry practitioners, and social activists interested in any of the following themes: - Social behavior - Cross-cultural contexts - Policy and enforcement - Punishments and sanctions - Designing social media - Intersectional practice Cheers, Lindsay Blackwell, University of Michigan Mark Handel, Facebook Sarah T. Re: [Air-L] Any research on "following" on platforms?
by Ricky Crano 18 Jan '18

18 Jan '18

This is something I began to get into in my recent article "The real terror of Instagram." http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1354856517750364 I only just scratch the surface, though, here. It's something I'm interested in pursuing much further, particularly through Derrida's late work on animals and following/tracking/tracing. Until then, eager to see what other suggestions folks have. ICA Feminist Scholarship Division 2018 Pre-Conference Promises and Perils of Feminist Theory
by K Eckert 18 Jan '18

18 Jan '18

ICA Feminist Scholarship Division 2018 Pre-Conference Promises and Perils of Feminist Theory: Common and Uncommon Ground *Anyone is welcome and encouraged to register - only participation in the second break out sessions is based on a Call for Papers. See details below. Time, Location, Fee Thursday, May 24, 2018 13:00-17:00 Local Time (with 11:30-13:00 offsite lunch, volunteer-basis, location TBD) In one of the two Conference Hotels (details to come) Participant registration fee: $25 Organizers Diana Nastasia, Southern Illinois, Edwardsville Lana Rakow, University of North Dakota Stine Eckert, Wayne State University Description The pre-conference will be a half-day session for Thursday afternoon, May 24, 2018, 13:00-17:00 local time in one of the two conference hotels in Prague. The session will address the issue of feminist communication theory under the title “Promise and Perils of Feminist Theory: Common and Uncommon Ground.” The topic is timely. After discussions about feminist theory in communication that peaked over a decade ago, the subject has not received sustained current attention, despite significant work and critiques by transnational feminists. While important feminist work still is being conducted across speech, rhetoric, journalism, mass communication, and digital technologies, it is time to take stock. What has happened to feminist communication theory? What theories have or have not proven to be useful or heuristic for feminist work in communication? What theories, if any, do we or could we share across our epistemological and ideological differences? Have some theories failed us, or has theory itself failed us? Does or can theory better inform our praxis? Should we pursue the identification of theories – naming names – as a short hand for what we think we know, a foundation for building deeper understanding and potential for change? Or do we need to abandon such efforts because of the peril of essentializing and universalizing? One breakout session focuses on “Recurring Problematics in Doing Feminist Scholarship,” featuring feminist scholars discussing the role of feminist publications, interventions in ways of doing scholarship, barriers to recognition and support for feminist research, linking media pedagogy with practice and theory, and the role of scholarly organizations in validating feminist media research. The second breakout session, “Generating Feminist Communication Theory,” will highlight how feminist communication theories can be developed and advanced. Participants are being sought for this session to present brief positions on a theory they are working on or with. Submissions should be only one to two pages, single spaced, with the theory name and your name and affiliation at the top. The paper should: 1. Describe or summarize the theory; 2. Show any links to other feminist and/or non-feminist theoretical positions and how the theory complements, corrects, or extends other positions; and 3. Describe how the theory has been or could be used to investigate relevant feminist concerns in communication. Submit your position paper via email by January 31, 2018 to Stine Eckert stine.eckert(a)wayne.edu<mailto:stine.eckert@wayne.edu> Stine Eckert, Ph.D. Chair Feminist Scholarship Division, International Communication Association (ICA) Assistant Professor Department of Communication 571 Manoogian Hall Wayne State University Detroit, MI 48201 @stineeckert http://stineeckert.com/

Special Issue: Mobile Media beyond Mobile Phones
by Jordan Frith 18 Jan '18

18 Jan '18

Hi all, I'm editing (with my colleague Didem Ozkul) a special issue of *Mobile Media & Communication* entitled "Mobile Media beyond Mobile Phones." The point of the special issue is to move mobile communication research beyond a dominant focus on smartphone technology. The journal is interdisciplinary, well-respected, widely read (h5 index of 23/30), and open to a range of methodological and theoretical perspectives. The full CFP can be found here: http://journals.sagepub.com/pb-assets/cmscontent/MMC/Frith_MMC_CFP.pdf . The CFP goes into more detal on why such the topic is important, the deadlines (extended abstract by March 15), and all of that. Here I just want to list a few possible topics. We're open to more and we hope to hear from some of you! Possible topics, including but not limited to · The Internet of Things broadly defined · Historical forms of mobile communication, including but not limited to o Books as mobile media o Ancient forms of mobile media o Mobile auditory media o Barcodes o Earlier mobile gaming technologies (Gameboy, etc.) · Mobile phone infrastructure (GPS, cell tower, etc.) · Wearable technologies such as the Apple Watch, Fitbit, etc. · Broader mobile communication infrastructure, including but not limited to o RFID o Near-Field Communication o BLE Beacons o QR Codes · Robotics as mobile communication · “Generations” of mobile networks—shift to 5G · Mobile phone standards as vibrant actors · The role of mobile communication in artificial intelligence -- Jordan Frith, Ph.D. Associate Professor Director of Graduate Studies Director of the Digital Media Studies Certificate University of North Texas Department of Technical Communication

Dear colleagues, on January 30 we will host a public lecture on „Democracy and Public Sphere in the Digital Society“ by Christoph Neuberger. The event will take place in Berlin, but both live-stream and recording will be available. The event is part of our lecture series „Making Sense of the Digital Society“ that launched in December with an Inaugural Lecture by Manuel Castells. Confirmed speakers for lectures in 2018 are: José van Dijck, Elena Esposito, Marion Fourcade. https://www.hiig.de/en/making-sense-of-the-digital-society/ Best, Christian Display problems? Are we living in times that strengthen democracy by expanding participation and interaction or do we rather witness democracy’s downfall through fragmentation and acceleration? Are citizens empowered by more inclusive participatory means or are they just pawns in the hands of the new digital forces? How does the public sphere fulfill its function of forming a societal self-understanding in times of hate speech and fake news? Who is responsible for realizing what society expects both of and in the internet? Is Facebook just a media company? How does traditional media need to develop itself? In his lecture he recapitulates general and immediate developments. He will show that we are indeed in the midst of a fundamental change – as well as that not everything is completely novel. Christoph Neuberger is Professor of Communication Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München since 2011. Before, he was a professor at the University of Münster. He was awarded with several prizes, e.g. the Schelling Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities for outstanding scientific achievements. His fields of research include the public sphere, online journalism, activities of the press and broadcasting media on the internet, search engines, social media, media quality, and media regulation. We chat, disagree, worship, vent, confess, and even attack in written form in public digital spaces. Drawing on scholarly literature from media and cultural studies, psychology and sociology, Uncovering Commenting Culture charts this commenting territory and outlines why we behave in these ways online. In this timely book, Renee Barnes provides a participatory model for understanding commenting culture that is based on the premise that our behaviours online–including those that cause us most the concern–are not so much an internet problem as a social problem. By looking at a wide variety of online commenting habitats, from the comment threads following news stories, through to specialist forums and social media platforms, the volume provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of online commenting in society and provides suggestions for how we might mitigate bad behaviours. About the book: * Systematically looks at why we behave the way we do online, in all spaces from the comment threads of news stories, to specialist forums, through to social media platforms * Draws on a broad range of research including that from media and cultural studies, psychology and anthropology * Fills a gap by providing scholars who are turning increasing attention to the online realm, and students navigating new media, a method for interpreting online comments’ role in society Dr Renee Barnes Program Co-ordinator BCI (Hons), BComm (Hons) Senior Lecturer, Journalism Faculty of Arts, Business and Law USC Office: DG.21 Phone: +61 (0)7 5430 1260 Twitter: @renbarau Web: http://bit.ly/reneebarnes University of the Sunshine Coast CRICOS Provider No. 01595D<http://bit.ly/reneebarnes> USC, Locked Bag 4, Maroochydore DC, Queensland, 4558 Australia.
