Internet, Policy and Politics 2018: Long Live Democracy? 20 - 21 September 2018, University of Oxford. This conference is convened by the Oxford Internet Institute for the OII-edited academic journal Policy and Internet, in collaboration with the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) standing group on Internet and Politics. http://ipp.oii.ox.ac.uk/2018/call-for-papers This conference will question the theses of democratic renewal - and democratic decay - in a digital world. We are looking for rigorous research that helps us understand the role of digital platforms in democratic processes and in the development of new institutional arrangements that ensure democratic systems remain free, fair and open. Current democratic and government structures are in urgent need of institutional renewal if they are to survive in the 21st century but we remain optimistic that harnessing the potential of internet-mediated technologies might support the reinvigoration of democracy. In this conference we thus seek to place critical attention on the potential role of internet mediated activity in undermining core aspects of democracy whilst also calling for positive, optimistic contributions which highlight the many ways in which the internet has allowed existing democracies to grow and change. We welcome theoretical, empirical, qualitative and quantitative studies, from all disciplines. Digital tools such as social media, mobile devices, video games, data analysis infrastructures, and networked technologies increasingly permeate our everyday lives. As a result, the production and expression of ‘meanings’ or ‘values’ – like the experience and performance of identity, gender, embodied lived experience, political activism, linguistic engagement, knowledge and power relations – are increasingly co-constituted by digital platforms. This one-day conference, which includes keynote speeches from Prof. Tim Jordan (University of Sussex, UK) and Dr. Katrin Tiidenberg (Aarhus University, Denmark), aims to bring together researchers from a wide array of disciplines with an interest in digital culture. Preconference Call for Papers International Communication Association Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer Interest Group 24 May 2018, Prague, Czech Republic MEDIA, GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN EUROPE Media are gendered and sexualized while gender and sexuality are heavily mediated. Gender and sexuality figure prominently in many aspects of media production, representation, consumption and use. At this preconference, we will build on a vast body of research in this area to examine the intersections between media, gender and sexuality as well as age, ability, class, religion, race, ethnicity and nationality. Inspired by the fact that the International Communication Association will for the first time in history hold its annual conference in Central Europe, we would like to think about those intersections from a European perspective, particularly from the perspective of underrepresented contexts such as Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. How do European contexts matter for the intersections of media, gender and sexuality? How are those intersections manifested in Europe at different historical moments and at different geographical scales (such as cities, countries and regions)? What can we learn about those intersections thinking through Europe-specific issues such as larger geopolitical challenges (e.g. Brexit, austerity measures, 'refugee crisis', postcommunist transitions and the rise of the far right) as well as challenges specifically related to gender and sexuality (e.g. homonationalism in Western Europe, 'gay propaganda' laws in Russia and Lithuania, and anti-gender campaigns across the continent)? Also, more theoretically, what can such Europe-specific research contribute to mainstream, largely Anglo-American, studies of media, gender and sexuality? What are the legacies and the futures of European gender, feminist, sexuality and LGBTQ media studies? A number of research questions arise, for example how to model the flow of information through the social web, understand people’s experiences and the effectiveness of online social networks, identify users or communities with behaviour potentially harmful to themselves or others, gain insights into society, or design, develop and evaluate automated personalization tools to improve the individual user experience. We invite original submission addressing all aspects of personalization and personal experience in online social systems. The books in the series are published online in an open access format available online without payment using a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY-NC-ND) and simultaneously as affordable paperbacks. We are able to publish a number of books in the call without any book processing charges thanks to generous support by the University of Westminster that covers these fees. Potential authors are welcome to contact the series editor outside of the initial time frame of this call for book proposals but should note that priority for funding support for suitable projects will be given to those proposals meeting the deadline. There is a preference for the submission of proposals for books whose writing can be finished and that can be submitted to UWP within the next 6-15 months. In the event of a surplus of strong proposals preference will be given to single-authored book proposals over edited volumes. We welcome submissions of a book outline proposal with (exactly one) sample chapter submitted as one single Word or PDF document. We can only accept suggestions for books written in English. Connectivity infrastructure is constantly expanding, while internet access is incessantly growing across countries, regions and socio-political contexts. In this context, new and crucial questions emerge from a governance and security perspective. As for the latter, new connectivity calls for cybersecurity capacity building strategies aiming at secure digital infrastructure. At the same time, from a governance perspective, traditional powers in the governance of the internet are increasingly challenged from newly connected actors who demand more influence in the transnational debate around digital policy development. As a result, despite claims for equal representations and diversity since the first World Summit on Information Society in 2003, the narrowing of the digital divide opens new and key questions: Whether and what inequalities exist in internet governance decision making? How is the rapidly changing internet geography and sociography reflected in the governance of the internet? Moreover, in order to increase awareness and enhance involvement of newly connected countries in national and transnational digital policy developments, what are the best internet governance capacity building strategies available? How do newly connected countries and actors build their digital policy capacity, and do they develop an active role in the transnational internet governance debate? Whether in newly or early connected countries, various kinds of divides persist across socio-cultural and political contexts, reflecting if not extending societal and socio-economic inequalities. Are such renewed forms of inequalities and discriminations adequately addressed in internet governance debates? What are the requirements for digital policies to actually empower people and uphold their individual and collective rights online? In order to answer these crucial and manifold questions, the conference will bring together an outstanding network of experts working on internet governance, digital inequalities, and cybersecurity capacity building.
