CFP 4S Sydney Open Panel - "Post-Cyber Feminisms: Mutations in Australian Feminist Technoscience"
by Thao Phan 11 Jan '18

11 Jan '18

*Apologies for cross-posting* Call for Papers 4S Sydney - Open Panel #99 Post-Cyber Feminisms: Mutations in Australian Feminist Technoscience Panel Convenors: Emma Black, University of Queensland, <http://goog_138455720/> emmaa.bblack(a)gmail.com Sally Olds, University of Melbourne, solds(a)student.unimelb.edu.au Thao Phan, University of Melbourne, thaophan03(a)gmail.com Australia has a rich history of feminist critique and engagement with science and technology. From the VNS Matrix’ Cyberfeminist Manifesto to Laboria Cuboniks’ Xenofeminist Manifesto, Australian feminists have been at the forefront of experimental and radical scholarship and practice. While concepts from cyberfeminism and xenofeminism are now transnational, their uniquely situated histories within genealogies of feminist technoscience warrants further engagement. This open panel invites papers reflecting on Australian feminist technoscience “post-cyber feminism.” What mutations have occurred over time? By mutation, we refer to the transmission, variation and corruption of ideas and approaches to “doing” feminist theory and practice. Mutations call to attention changes in situated material contexts, in this case, the specific material-semiotic assemblages of time/place/people/events we call “Australia.” The questions we seek to address include: What are the uniquely Australian histories of feminist technoscience? How do these intersect with other forms of Australian feminisms, such as Aboriginal, postcolonial, queer? How can we think “xeno”-politics in a settler-colonising society? How do seemingly disparate movements in contemporary art, fiction, philosophy, and feminism draw on, respond to, and critically resist Australian cyberfeminism, and how has Australian cyberfeminism mutated in response to these? How have changing political, material, and technological conditions altered the field of cyberfeminism, perhaps necessitating the expanded taxonomy of what Helen Hester recently called “post-cyber feminism”? We seek both traditional conference papers and contributions that loosen or discard the conference paper format altogether: science-fiction, performance art, poetry, philosophy, and all other mutations. *Deadline: *Feb 1, 2018 *Submissions:* https://4s2018sydney.org/accepted-open-panels-4s/ —— 4S Sydney 2018 - Call for Submissions Closes February 1st 2018 We are excited to announce that 4sSydney (August 29th - September 1st 2018) is now open for submissions: https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/ On this website you will find information about submitting a closed panels and single papers<https://4s2018sydney.org/panels_papers/> a paper to an open panel<https://4s2018sydney.org/accepted-open-panels-4s/> a Making and Doing<https://4s2018sydney.org/making_doing/> session; and an exciting new addition to the 4S program, the STS Across Borders Exhibit< https://4s2018sydney.org/across-borders/>. Call for Papers: Political Polarization Workshop – Social Media and Political Polarization in Non-U.S. Contexts
by Tetsuro Kobayashi 11 Jan '18

11 Jan '18

Call for Papers: Political Polarization Workshop – Social Media and Political Polarization in Non-U.S. Contexts Workshop to be held in conjunction with Conference on E-Democracy and Open Government Asia 2018 (CeDEM Asia 2018) Conference dates: July 12-13th, 2018 Location: Yokohama, Japan Confirmed keynotes: Shanto Iyengar, Stanford University Francis Lee, Chinese University of Hong Kong Workshop Chairs: Tetsuro Kobayashi and Marko M. Skoric Social media allow us to tune in selectively to the sources that share our partisan and ideological leanings, potentially resulting in attitudinal and affective political polarization. Although selective exposure has been well documented in both experimental and observational studies, with few exceptions, most extant research has been conducted in the United States. The high level of ideological polarization in the U.S. may be idiosyncratic from a global perspective, so cross-cultural investigation is necessary for assessing the generalizability of the findings. This panel specifically focuses on the relationship of social media use and political polarization in non-U.S. contexts, broadly defined. We are particularly interested in studies examining the role of social media in political polarization in emerging democracies, semi-democracies, and authoritarian states in Asia. The topics for this panel may include, but are not limited to: 1. Survey studies on the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 2. Experimental studies testing the impact of social media use on selective exposure/avoidance and consequential political polarization in the non-U.S. contexts. 3. Cross-national studies examining the generalizability of the association between social media use and political polarization. Full papers for the workshop are due on February 15, 2018 and should have a length of 6,000-8,000 words (excluding tables, figures, and references). To ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer-review for submissions to this conference, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors being known to reviewers. The authors of the document shall replace their names in the text, references, footnotes and metadata with "authors" only. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of a journal (SSCI). *The authors of all accepted papers for the Political Polarization workshop will receive a registration fee waiver, free hotel accommodation, and a travel support grant.* Website of CeDEM Asia 2018 and submission instructions: https://wp.me/ptoXX-4mS Important Dates: Conference Date: 12-13 July, 2018 Submission deadline: February 15th, 2018 (via EasyChair from January 5th, 2018) https://easychair.org/conferences/conference_dir.cgi?a=17090026 Notifications: March 15th, 2018 Conference Managers: Paper submissions: Judith Schossböck, City University of Hong Kong/Danube University Krems, judith.schossboeck(a)donau-uni.ac.at Conference secretariat: Glenn Chong, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Singapore, glenn.chong(a)kas.de

#SMSociety CFP: 2018 INTERNATIONAL CONF on SOCIAL MEDIA & SOCIETY [Papers due in 18 days!]
by agruzd＠gmail.com 10 Jan '18

10 Jan '18

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND SOCIETY COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (JULY 18-20, 2018) THEME: Networked Influence and Virality - REVISITED IMPORTANT DATES Full & WIP Papers Due: Jan. 29, 2018 Panels, Workshops, & Posters Due: Mar. 19, 2018 PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES Full and WIP (short) papers presented at the Conference will be published in the conference proceedings by ACM International Conference Proceeding Series (ICPS) and will be available in the ACM Digital Library. All conference presenters will be invited to submit their work as a full paper to the special issue of the Social Media + Society journal (published by SAGE). SUBMISSION DETAILS: http://socialmediaandsociety.org/submit/ ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Join us on July 18-20, 2018 for the 9th annual International Conference on Social Media and Society (#SMSociety). The conference is an interdisciplinary gathering of social media researchers, practitioners, and analysts from around the world. The 2018 conference is hosted by the Centre for Business Data Analytics at the Copenhagen Business School. In 2012, in the wake of Occupy and the Arab Spring, the #SMSociety community explored networked influence and virality, and saw social media and viral events as a democratizing force. Fast forward five years and we find ourselves in quite a different, some would argue, darker social media landscape where those same democratizing forces are now being exploited in ways we could not foresee. With the rapid change on social media platforms and their affordances, the heightened emphasis on mobile and visual communication, the rise of bots, and the increased participation of state actors, we believe it is time to revisit the ideas of Networked Influence and Virality once more! Powered by networked influence and made possible by privately owned social media platforms, we are said to be in a sharing economy. We are now owning less and sharing more, giving and receiving crowdsourced content, adapting, innovating, remaking, and re-sharing original and remixed materials. New attitudes, practices, and legal precedents about ownership, rights, and information evaluation are emerging with the growing use of social media. The joys of sharing and connecting through social media-as amateur music videos inspire responses and the sharing of cute animal videos brings joy to millions-are tempered with concerns about the manipulation and exploitation of social media platforms. Hateful, anti-social speech, coordinated misinformation campaigns (i.e. "fake news") and "false flag" operation by actors unknown now dominate the news cycle and compete for an opportunity to "go viral." Considering the rapid changes in social media environments, use, and users, the conference organizers invite scholarly and original submissions that relate to the 2018 theme of "Networked Influence and Virality." We welcome both quantitative and qualitative work which crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media research, especially those that explore some of the questions and issues raised below: * How do ideas spread online? What are the outcomes of the viral spread of news, memes, content, and creative production? * Who are the new influencers and power players in the information landscape of social media? * How important are bots in this landscape? How do bots act as social actors? In what ways are they transforming social media? * Algorithmic filtering is now the norm on all major social media platforms; how has their implementation changed the user experience? * What are the impacts of misinformation and propaganda on elections, commerce, and the attention economy? * Is faster, frictionless communication still an ideal to strive for or have we gone too far? Do we need to reintroduce some frictions back to social media platforms? * How do corporate interests, activities, sales, and profit motivations drive or otherwise affect sharing practices? * What are the characteristics of contemporary social media practices that drive the need for new laws, sharing conventions, censorship, rights to be heard and to be forgotten? * Do social media users understand, or are they even aware of, the ethical considerations related to sharing, and re-mixing content on social media? * How do users evaluate information received through social media? * How does viral culture affect policy, power dynamics, corporations, activists, and personal interests? * What new methodologies, tools, and frameworks can researchers bring to bear in studying the flow of information on social media? * How do sharing, memes, and viral events contribute to theory-building about our society? >From its inception, the International Conference on Social Media & Society Conference (#SMSociety) has focused on the best practices for studying the impact and implications of social media on society. Our invited academic and industry keynotes have highlighted the shifting questions and concerns for the social media research community. From introducing media multiplexity and networked individualism with Caroline Haythornthwaite and Barry Wellman in 2010 and 2011, to measuring influence with Gilad Lotan and Sharad Goel in 2012 and 2013, to defining social media research as a field with Keith Hampton in 2014, to identifying our commitments as social media researchers in policy making with Bill Dutton in 2015, to exploring the future of social media technologies with John Weigelt in 2015, to highlighting the challenges of social media data mining in the context of big data with Susan Halford and Helen Kennedy in 2016; and more recently discussing the dark side of social media with Lee Rainie and Ron Deibert in 2017. Organized by the Social Media Lab <http://socialmedialab.ca/> at Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, the conference provides participants with opportunities to exchange ideas, present original research, learn about recent and ongoing studies, and network with peers. The conference's intensive three-day program features workshops, full papers, work-in-progress papers, panels, and posters. CfP 4S2018 Open Panel: STS Interventions for studying invisible data infrastructures
by Ogden J.R. 10 Jan '18

10 Jan '18

Hi all - Please find below our Call for Papers for an open panel at the annual Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) conference on STS and studying invisible data infrastructures. For information, the full conference call for submissions is also included. We’d love to see some AoIR folks in Sydney - any questions about the panel please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Also just to flag up - the abstract submission deadline is Feb 1 and quickly approaching! Best wishes, Jess -- Jessica Ogden PhD Candidate Web Science Centre for Doctoral Training University of Southampton Email: jessica.ogden(a)soton.ac.uk<mailto:jessica.ogden@soton.ac.uk> Twitter: @jessogden Web: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/sociology/postgraduate/research_students/jro1… —— Call for Papers 4S Sydney: Transnational STS - Open Panel #106 From Black Boxes to Locked Boxes: STS interventions for studying invisible data infrastructures Panel Convenors: Jessica Ogden, Susan Halford, Jack Webster (University of Southampton) Data infrastructures pervade our lives, and yet often remain obscured, inaccessible and resistant to study. Some of the material impacts of data infrastructures can be felt in our everyday lives through interactions with location awareness and transportation apps, music recommender systems, health tracking and grocery store checkouts. And yet, after decades of infrastructure studies, STS methods and theories are increasingly stretched to accommodate the scale and rate at which data infrastructures manifest. As systems of governance, social justice, commerce and warfare are embedded in and utterly reliant upon data infrastructures, the stakes could not be higher. This panel invites contributions that engage with the methodological challenges associated with investigating socio-technical invisibilities in digital data infrastructures. Here we envisage invisibilities to encompass the context of wide-ranging socio-technical relations that enable and disable access to data infrastructures, from black-boxed algorithms and internet protocols to labour and organisational structures. The panel welcomes critical reflection on the ontological and material implications of the ways in which invisibility in data infrastructures is conceptualised in STS, and by extension, operationalised into methods and methodological interventions. We invite creative methodological contributions to STS that reconfigure and extend existing concepts to develop ways of engaging with varying types and degrees of access and absence in digital infrastructures – where even the barriers themselves may become the subject of study. The panel hopes to create an atmosphere of reflexive engagement with both the possible consequences of inaction and the potential for STS interventions in making visible the invisible. —— 4S Sydney 2018 - Call for Submissions Closes February 1st 2018 We are excited to announce that 4sSydney (August 29th - September 1st 2018) is now open for submissions: https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/ On this website you will find information about submitting a closed panels and single papers<https://4s2018sydney.org/panels_papers/> a paper to an open panel<https://4s2018sydney.org/accepted-open-panels-4s/> a Making and Doing<https://4s2018sydney.org/making_doing/> session; and an exciting new addition to the 4S program, the STS Across Borders Exhibit<https://4s2018sydney.org/across-borders/>. [CfP] 'Grand Visions' for Post-Capitalist HCI - CHI2018 workshop
by Tom Feltwell 10 Jan '18

10 Jan '18

Call for Participation: ---- CHI 2018 Workshop - “Grand Visions” for Post-Capitalist HCI Montréal, Canada, Saturday 21st April 2018. Submission deadline: 2nd February 2018. http://hci.post-capitalist.com ---- It is acknowledged that all digital technology is designed, whether knowingly or not, to fit a specific worldview or political stance. For example “sharing economy” services such as Uber or AirBnB, support a Silicon Valley-centric future devoid of state regulation and anti-monopoly legislation. As a community, we must question to what end are we improving the efficiency, efficacy and satisfaction of interactions. Are our goals any different to that of entrepreneurs? New technology is typically proposed as a way of cutting costs, removing or lowering the need for human work. Yet it is rare to see technology designed towards a future in which making money is not a key concern – it seems to be currently beyond our collective imagination. In this workshop we wish to counteract this. We wish to convene academics, artists, designers, and developers to explore the interstices of HCI and post-capitalism, and design to support and facilitate a post-capitalist future. We welcome one of two formats of submission: 1) A two-page ACM Extended Abstract format position paper 2) A short video submission (2-4 minutes) along with a 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Both submission formats should outline the authors’ motivations, ideas and potential designs for the workshop. Examples of topics include: tools to enable greater civic participation, technologies and systems to remove corporate/financial influence, how fully automated luxury communism might work, tools to suppress the rise of capitalism, disrupting the marginalisation of vulnerable populations, approaches to encourage communism and the emancipation of big data. We ask the authors to indicate how many authors will attend the workshop as places are limited. All workshop participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the main CHI conference. Format: Either 2 page ACM Extended Abstract or 2-4 minute video with 1-2 paragraph expression of interest. Full details available: http://hci.post-capitalist.com/submission Deadline: 2nd February 2018 Notification: 22nd February 2018 Workshop: 21st April 2018, Montréal, Canada. ----- Best regards, Tom Feltwell, Senior Research Assistant, NorSC Lab Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK This message is intended solely for the addressee and may contain confidential and/or legally privileged information. For details please see below or visit http://www.ier2018.info/ Best wishes, Sille Sille Obelitz Søe, PhD Post.doc. Department of Information Studies (INF) University of Copenhagen ------------------------------------------------ Information Ethics Roundtable 2018 Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture University of Copenhagen, Denmark May 17-18, 2018 Proposals Due: February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: March 5, 2018 Full papers due: April 23, 2018 http://www.ier2018.info/ The 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER) will explore the interconnections and interdependencies between Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture that exist in the contemporary information society. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection
 - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use
*Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. The description should include: i) description of the topic, ii) biographies of the panel members, ii) organization of the panel. It is a requirement that panels focus tightly on a specific emergent topic, technology, phenomena, policy, or the like, with clear connections between the presentations. Proposals should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk<mailto:sille.obelitz@hum.ku.dk> Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 proposal” We are also interested in receiving expressions of interest to serve as a commenter/discussant for another person’s paper, as each author with an accepted paper will be paired with a commenter who will provide formal feedback and comments during the conference (after the initial paper presentation; discussants will be included in the official conference program). Expressions of interest should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk<mailto:sille.obelitz@hum.ku.dk> by April 16, 2018, although decisions will be made on a rolling basis after March 5, 2018 (the paper notification deadline). Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 commenter.” *Deadlines* Submission of Proposals (papers and panels): Monday February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: Monday March 5, 2018 Full Paper Deadline: Monday April 23, 2018
Registration Deadline: Friday May 4, 2018 Conference Dates: Thursday & Friday May 17-18, 2018 More information on conference website: http://www.ier2018.info/ Sille Obelitz Søe, PhD Post.doc.
