Involved disciplines include communication and media studies, computer science, cultural studies, educational science, studies in religion, and history. Starting in mid-2017, the ZeMKI invites applications from excellent researchers in the field of media, communication, and information. As a ZeMKI Visiting Research Fellow, the selected candidate will gain insights into the versatile research activities at the interdisciplinary centre with over 60 members. Applicants should demonstrate experience and a strong interest in the collaborative research which is embraced at the ZeMKI in various ways and contexts. The selected candidate is expected to contribute to these research activities in the area of media change and transforming communications in the form of a research paper submitted to the peer-reviewed “Communicative Figurations” working paper series as well as a lecture in the ZeMKI Research Seminar. Applicants must have obtained a PhD or other doctoral degree in a relevant discipline by the application date. We offer a lump sum allowance of 3,000 euro plus up to 1,500 euro for research-related expenses. *** sorry for cross-posting *** CALL FOR PAPERS International ZeMKI conference "The Mediatization of Time: New perspectives on media, data and temporality" 7-8 December 2017 ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research University of Bremen, Germany Recent innovations in the digitalization and datafication of communication fundamentally affect how people conceptualize, perceive and evaluate time to create the kind of world they live in. The conference invites participants to think through the interplay of media and data in respect of the way social time is constructed, modulated, and experienced. This allows to appreciate how new technologies and representations deeply affect the temporal organization of today’s media suffused societies, and it also sheds light on transformations in mediating time. We assume that mediatization as a fundamental societal change that interweaves with the development and spread of communication and information technologies leaves its mark on the ways we process and order the pace, sequence, rhythms and of social reality. This conference invites to think through the role of media and data people have or had at hand to time their interactions, relations, and states of being. It encourages submissions related to the mediation of time and the timing of media(ization), and includes, but is not restricted to, the following themes: - Transformativity of mediatization processes: How can we grasp the historically changing mediation of time and the relation to diachronic processes of mediatization? What are the dynamics between the transforming construction of time and the ongoing formation of mediatization? - Temporality and mediation of time: Are there temporal affordances of media and how do they influence the experience of mediated time? Can Nvivo be used to removed PHI from free text?

Hi all, Our team is conducting a retrospective study involving electronic medical records (EMR) data and we are trying to identify tools that can help us automate the removal of PHI from unstructured text data. By “unstructured data” we mean free narrative text containing many possible points of interest, as opposed to structured variable tables with rows and columns. The note text is itself in a structured table, however, with the following columns: patient ID, date, note subject, note text. These notes contain medical information about patients: nurses’ notes, physician notes, discharge summaries, specialty reports, etc. We need to de-identify our data using the “Safe harbor” method: removal of 18 identifiers recommended by HIPAA, including names, dates, contact information, ages >89, ID numbers, etc. of patients or relatives, employers, or household members of patients, as well as device identifiers, serial numbers, and policy numbers. We are wondering if Nvivo is capable of locating these particular types of data within text, and either remove or replace the found data. We then would like to export the de-identified data in its table format (i.e. columns: patient ID, date, notes subject, [now de-identified] note text. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated! The deadline is *Friday, **May 26, 2017, 8:59 p.m. PDT. * For more details, the CFP is here: https://www.usenix.org/sites/ default/files/foci17_preliminary_cfp_042017.pdf FOCI is an interdisciplinary workshop co-located with the USENIX Security Symposium that seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields focused on censorship, surveillance, and other practices that inhibit free and open communications on the internet. This year I am co-chairing FOCI with Nick Weaver (of Berkeley, ICSI, and Lawfare fame), so let me know if you have any questions. Among those on the interdisciplinary Program Committee are folks like Roger Dingledine (The Tor Project), Kurt Opsahl (EFF), Lex Gill (Citizen Lab), Molly Sauter (McGill), and Nick Feamster (Princeton CITP). One of the changes we made this year to encourage a broader range of submissions is creating a "two track" submissions stream, one for traditional FOCI technical papers and another for "law/social science" papers drawing on law, policy, or social science, with more flexible formatting and page limits. Media Manipulation and Disinformation Online Report Released w/ Syllabus

Hi everyone! I'm very pleased to announce a giant new report I wrote with Becca Lewis on "Media Manipulation and Disinformation Online." You can find it here: https://datasociety.net/output/media-manipulation-and-disinfo-online/ In it, we talk about how far-right groups use a variety of techniques to spread and amplify their messaging through mainstream media. We talk about who these people are (trolls, white nationalists, men's rights activists); where they congregate online (the chans, various blogs and YouTube channels, Discord servers); the tactics and strategies they use (participatory culture, memes, radicalization); what motivates them (ideology, money, and status/fame), and some possible outcomes (misinformation, decreased trust in media, increased radicalization). It is 100pp long including an extensive bibliography. The report is very detailed, but is written in an accessible style that should appeal to non-academics as well. Call for Panels CPDP2018 – The Internet of Bodies This call for panels is aimed at academic consortia, research projects, think tanks and other research organisations. (Another call, to individuals for academic research papers, will go out towards the end of May 2017) The overarching theme of the 2018 edition is the “Internet of Bodies”. Data collection increasingly focuses on the physical body. Bodies are increasingly connected, digitized and informatized. In turn, the data extracted is reassembled in ways that give rise to significant questions – challenging fundamental assumptions about where the corporeal ends and the informational begins. Biometrics, genetic data processing and the quantified self are only some of the trends and technologies reaching into the depths of our bodies. Emerging technologies such as human enhancement, neural implants and brain wave technology look likely to soon become a daily reality. We welcome cutting edge panels in all areas related to technology, privacy and data protection, but particularly invite proposals that fit the general conference theme. We encourage panels that are well-balanced, multidisciplinary and geographically and gender diverse. Hi About BlueLivesMatter, I'm not sure if there are writings over this but I'd be really interested in the convergence between these movements and the police series like Chicago PD and similar. These are exported heavily and mainstreamed and here in Brazil independent media collectives have been working really hard to dennounce unfair persecution of black and poor people by the police. They are also getting their own local spin offs and during political crisis these can be used as tools against activists as well. If you can share your investigation would be great. Best, Renata
