CfP: Japan in the Digital Age
by Esperanza Miyake 07 Jun '17

Japan in the Digital Age Call for Papers for a one-day Symposium Saturday 28th October, 2017 The Shed, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Keynote Speakers Prof. Ian Condry, Professor of Japanese Cultural Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Mr. Kazuhito Gen-I (?? ??), award-winning media practitioner, working on 2.5 Dimension project (theatre adaptation of anime, manga and videogame) Japan has been a place of fascination throughout the years, particularly to those interested in media and popular culture, business, science and technology, and other related areas such as transport and tourism. Yet surprisingly, there is little sustained discussion on how contemporary Japan is situated within the rapidly changing landscape of digital technologies in the New Millennium. How has digitisation changed Japanese aesthetics and values? Have mobile phone technologies altered the way Japanese business language is used? How does 'tradition' shape Japanese digital cultures? Such questions need urgent attention as currently, there are a number of significant and innovative digital initiatives in Japan which have impacted on Japanese culture and arts, technology, business and society, but are little known outside of Japan. We invite academics, PG students, industry researchers and practitioners for contributions which examine the transformation of Japan in the Digital Age, and the transformation of the Digital Age through Japanese culture, practice, politics, technologies, industries and beyond. The overall aim of the Symposium is to provide a supportive and inspiring environment to encourage cross-disciplinary and cross-sector dialogues, to learn about innovative digital projects in Japan, and to build a network of those engaged with Japan through their work and lives. Suggested topics include: · Digital technologies and Japanese popular culture (e.g. anime/manga, games, fashion) · Japanese digital identity, politics and society · Digital communications, Japanese language and business · Innovative Japanese digital design and technologies Please submit a 250-word abstract to e.miyake(a)mmu.ac.uk by 4th August 2017, using the following format: title + abstract; name of author(s); affiliation; email; key words. For any enquiries, please get in touch with Dr. Esperanza Miyake (e.miyake(a)mmu.ac.uk)? Dear Scholars, Please take a look at a draft of our new book out with Polity, After the Internet, written by myself and Ramesh Srinivasan. Here is the blurb, table of contents, and link. https://www.academia.edu/33349822/After_the_Internet Best, Adam Fish After the Internet Ramesh Srinivasan <http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-302479.html?query=Ramesh+Srinivasan> , Adam Fish <http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-302479.html?query=Adam+Fish> ISBN: 978-1-5095-0618-7 224 pages September 2017, Polity Description In the wake of Edward Snowden's revelations, and concern that the internet has heightened rather than combatted various forms of political and social inequality, it is time we ask: What comes after a broken internet? Ramesh Srinivasan and Adam Fish reimagine the internet from the perspective of grassroots activists and citizens on the margins of political and economic power. They explore how the fragments of the existing internet are being utilised alongside a range of peoples, places, and laws to make change possible. From indigenous and non-western communities and activists in Tahrir Square, to imprisoned hackers and whistleblowers, this book illustrates how post-digital cultures are changing the internet as we know it from a system which is increasingly centralized, commodified, and "personalized", into something more in line with its original spirit: autonomous, creative, subversive. The book looks past the limitations of the internet, reconceptualizing network technology in relation to principles of justice and equality. Srinivasan and Fish advocate for an internet that blends the local concerns of grassroots communities and activists with the need to achieve scalable change and transformation. Written by two highly respected scholars in the field, this compelling book is essential reading for anyone concerned with the quality and future of the internet. EXTENDED DEADLINE: ComplexRec 2017 (RecSys'17 Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios)
by Toine Bogers 07 Jun '17

07 Jun '17

Due to numerous requests we have extended the original workshop deadline for: ==================================================================================== RecSys'17 Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios (ComplexRec 2017) http://complexrec2017.aau.dk Como, Italy August 31, 2017 ==================================================================================== --------------- Important dates --------------- * Paper submission deadline: June 16, 2017 (NEW DEADLINE, before midnight, anywhere on Earth) * Notification of acceptance: July 9, 2017 * Camera-ready deadline: July 18, 2017 * RecSys 2017: August 31, 2017 ------------------------ Description & Objectives ------------------------ Over the past decade, recommendation algorithms for ratings prediction and item ranking have steadily matured. However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user's more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2017 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation -- Approaches that take the user's background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Feature-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation -- Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user's recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Interactive recommendation -- Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Context-aware recommendation -- Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources -- Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation -- Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 2-4 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short 10-minute presentations with equal time for discussion. Evaluation criteria for acceptance will include novelty, diversity, significance for theory/practice, quality of presentation, and the potential for sparking interesting discussion at the workshop. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop. All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be formatted in the ACM Proceedings Style (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) and submitted via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=complexrec2017) Submissions will be published in the workshop proceedings (CEUR-WS). ---------- Organizers ---------- * Toine Bogers (toine(a)hum.aau.dk) Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark * Marijn Koolen (marijn.koolen(a)gmail.com) Huygens Institute, the Netherlands * Bamshad Mobasher (mobasher(a)cs.depaul.edu) DePaul University, USA * Alan Said (alansaid(a)acm.org) University of Skövde, Sweden * Alexander Tuzhilin (atuzhili(a)stern.nyu.edu) NYU Stern School of Business, USA For further questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee.

Cultures of Capitalism CSAA 2017 Conference, Wellington NZ, 6-8 Dec
by Taffel, Sy 06 Jun '17

06 Jun '17

Cultures of Capitalism Cultural Studies Association of Australasia Conference 2017 December 6-8 Massey University, Wellington Campus Aotearoa New Zealand Keynote Speakers: Professor Patricia Hill Collins (University of Maryland), Professor Jodi Dean (Hobart and William Smith Colleges), Professor Jeremy Gilbert (University of East London), Professor Wendy Larner (University of Victoria, Wellington). The relationship between capital and culture is hotly contested. On the one hand, dominant political discourses valorise "culture" as the solution for ailing communities, cities and industries. Discourses of neo-liberal globalization claim that, in the face of mass migration, war and climate change, communities equipped with the "right" culture will adapt and endure, while others will be left behind; discourses of urban planning celebrate culture as the key to revitalising municipal economies through creativity and social participation; and discourses of post-industrial work, parsing radical shifts in the manufacturing sector, champion cultural, intellectual and creative labour as the paradigm for new forms of work. On the other, a range of critical voices, many of them associated with Cultural Studies, offer a decidedly less rosy vision of the relationship between culture and emergent capitalist formations. For these critics, nascent technologies of capital have led to a renewed reification and exploitation of racialised, sexualised, and classed populations, even as newly precarious conditions of labour give rise to affective economies marked by depression, antagonism and the "crisis ordinary." The 2017 Cultural Studies Association of Australasia conference will focus on the work that cultures do in constructing, contesting, and constituting new capital formations. While the "culture industry" critique cast culture as the opiate through which economic dominance is propagated, cultures can potentially mediate economic conditions in multiple and heterogeneous ways. This conference invites contributions that explore these mediations. In doing so, we return to one of the key concerns of early cultural studies: to make sense of the mutually-determining relation between culture and its capitalist context. If, following Stuart Hall, we understand 'culture' as the production of meaning through language and representation, what are the modes of communication through which capitalism/s are created? How are capitalism/s materialised in different spaces? How is it embodied in different identities and communities? What is the role of the economy in shaping the possibilities for culture? What is the role of Cultural Studies as critical praxis in the present economic time? Papers are invited to address, but are not limited to, the following themes: * The cultural politics of neoliberalism * Precarious and/or immaterial labour * Digital capitalism * Capitalist affects * Trump, Brexit and the resurgence of capitalist nationalisms * Capitalism, culture and technology * The cultural and creative industries * Capitalism, culture and sustainability * Cultures of surveillance and war * Cultural identity and globalisation * Cultural resistance and activism * Productive and unproductive cultures * Base, superstructure and mediation * Formal and real subsumption of culture * Representations of capitalism, class and markets * Political economies of online, digital and social media * Anticapitalist, Socialist, Anarchist and Communist cultures * Racial capitalism * Critical theory, Cultural Marxism and Cultural Studies The conference also accepts papers that fall within the general disciplinary area of Cultural Studies. We are also happy to accept submissions for pre-formed panels: if you wish to submit as part of a pre-formed panel, please indicate this in your submission. In addition, to the regular conference events, we will also be holding a pre-fix day for postgraduate students and early career researchers. More details regarding this event will be announced shortly. Early bird registration costs for the event will be $350 NZD for faculty and fully waged participants, and $250 NZD for students, adjunct faculty and unwaged participants. Registration will include membership of the CSAA. If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please send a 250 word abstract with your name, e-mail address and affiliation to csaa2017(a)massey.ac.nz<mailto:csaa2017@massey.ac.nz> by August 1 2017. WEBCAST TODAY: Will the Internet Fragment? A Discussion with Milton Mueller

In his new book, Will the Internet Fragment?, Professor Mueller argues that the fragmentation diagnosis misses the mark, and the rhetoric of fragmentation camouflages the real issue: the attempt by governments to align information flows with their jurisdictional boundaries. The fragmentation debate is really a power struggle over the future of national sovereignty, pitting global governance and open access against traditional territorial institutions of government. This conflict, the book argues, can only be resolved through radical institutional innovations. In order to save the internet, we need to move away from national sovereignty and towards popular sovereignty in cyberspace. PANEL: *Dr. Milton Mueller*, Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology School of Public Policy; *Rebecca MacKinnon*, Director, Ranking Digital Rights project at New America; *Tim Maurer*, Co-director of the Cyber Policy Initiative, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; *Angela McKay*, Senior Director of Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy, Microsoft.
