SPeL 2017 - extended deadlines
by Elvira Popescu 06 Jun '17

06 Jun '17

================================================================== SPeL 2017 10th International Workshop on Social and Personal Computing for Web-Supported Learning Communities http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2017 In conjunction with ICWL 2017 (16th International Conference on Web-based Learning) http://www.hkws.org/conference/icwl2017 & SETE 2017 (2nd International Symposium on Emerging Technologies for Education) http://2017.isete.net 20-22 September 2017 Cape Town, South Africa * Extended paper submission deadline: June 25, 2017 (preceded by a mandatory abstract submission by June 18) * All accepted workshop papers will be published by Springer in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) ================================================================== MOTIVATION =========== The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008, SPeL 2009, SPeL 2010, SPeL 2011, DULP & SPeL 2012, SPeL 2013, SPeL 2014, SPeL 2015 and SPeL 2016 workshops, held in conjunction with the SAINT 2008 conference, WI/IAT 2009 conference, DEXA 2010 conference, ICWL 2011 conference, ICALT 2012 conference, ICSTCC 2013 conference, ICWL 2014 conference, ICSLE 2015 conference and ICWL & SETE 2017 conferences respectively. The general topic of the workshop is the social and personal computing for web-supported learning communities. Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems to a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social software (e.g., blogs, wikis, social bookmarking systems, media sharing services) is increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to create novel learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this context is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative learning, taking into consideration the individual differences between learners. This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way through social interaction with other learners. The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers, educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent learning environments. The proposed field is interdisciplinary and very dynamic, taking into account the recent advent of Web 2.0 and ubiquitous personalization, and it is hoped to attract a large audience. TOPICS OF INTEREST ================== The workshop welcomes submissions covering aspects of collaboration, social interactions, adaptivity and personalization in technology enhanced learning, particularly related to issues about: * Social learning environments * Theory and modeling of social computing in education * Web 2.0 tools for collaborative learning * Personal learning environments * Lifelong learning networks * Virtual spaces for learning communities * Social networks analysis and mining * Computer-supported collaborative learning * Personalized and adaptive learning * Adaptation methods and techniques for groups of learners * Intelligent learner and group modeling * Collaborative filtering and recommendations for learners * Game-based social learning * Personalized mobile learning applications * Cloud-based social learning * Intelligent agent technology for social learning * Metadata, folksonomies and tagging * Semantic web and ontologies for personalized learning * Cognitive, motivational and affective aspects for personalization * Practice and experience sharing PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION ================================== The workshop papers should be formatted according to the Springer LNCS Authors Guidelines (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) The length of the manuscript should not exceed 6 pages for short papers and 10 pages for full papers. Papers should be submitted in PDF format, through the Easychair system: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=spel2017. All accepted workshop papers will be published in a post-conference proceedings volume in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). IMPORTANT DATES =============== Abstract submission: June 18, 2017 (extended, strict!) Full paper submission: June 25, 2017 (extended, strict!) Acceptance notification: July 12, 2017 Registration and camera-ready papers: July 25, 2017 Conference dates: September 20-22, 2017 WORKSHOP CHAIRS ================ Elvira Popescu - University of Craiova, Romania Sabine Graf - Athabasca University, Canada Please refer to the workshop website (http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2017) for more information and contact us at: popescu_elvira(a)software.ucv.ro or sabineg(a)athabascau.ca for any inquiry.

CFP Special Issue Nordicom Review (OPEN ACCESS)
by Anja Bechmann 06 Jun '17

06 Jun '17

Call for papers: NORDICOM Review (OPEN ACCESS) Making sense of small and big data as onlife traces Special issue editors: Anja Bechmann, Associate Professor at Aarhus University & Visiting Assoc. Professor at UCI and Kjetil Sandvik, Associate Professor at University of Copenhagen. Onlife designates the transformational reality that in contemporary developed societies, our offline and online experiences and lives are inextricably interwoven (Simon & Ess 2015). Our onlives produce digital traces or footprints, some of which are produced before birth by our parents and continue to exist even after our death (in the shape of registers, bank accounts, social media profiles etc.). This special issue of Nordicom Review examines and discusses how we create meaning in and make sense of small and big data as onlife traces. The fields of qualitative and quantitative studies are often depicted as each other’s counterpart. Yet, when researchers study onlife as a way of conceptualizing the digital layer of our lives, we meet similar obstacles. One of the major questions is how can we infer meaning from the digital traces made by the user to the actual use/praxis or partial to the human(s) behind (incentives, motives, needs)? This is a classical methodological question within communication and behavioural studies that has a renewed interest in the digital social sciences as we discover methodological trajectories into the onlife, be it studies of Internet of Things, apps (e.g. social media, games, self-trackers), or other digital communication and behaviours as traces of digital sociology. Both small and big data studies approaches have tried to ‘solve’ this problem of inference by suggesting triangulation as methodological approach. Within big data studies more data on more users, multiple data points or data over a longer time span on the same user are used to create more ‘clear signals’ and to strengthen the predictions of the motives, ideologies, incentives, and needs of a specific user. Qualitative studies use for instance multisided ethnography and methodological triangulation to heighten the validity of findings when it comes to clearly understand the user and the use behind onlife traces. In a time where user data have become sharable and tradable commodities and where governments, media, health and financial sectors build actions and decisions on top of predictions inferred from data traces of human communication and behaviour in digital spaces it is maybe more important than ever to understand and discuss not if we can make a solid one-to-one interpretation, but how we can advance our inferences or at least explicitly discuss in various studies how we have solved or coped with this issue by advancing our research questions, our methodological approaches, philosophical background or conceptual understanding. We are interested in papers that study onlife empirically and – in this connection – discuss the methods used to infer meaning from data traces to the usage or users behind. Furthermore, we are looking for empirical studies that use and discuss methods to extract meaningful (sociological) findings out of small and big data and discuss the methodological challenges in doing so. We are also looking for philosophical and theoretical contribution (on e.g. AI reasoning) and historical contribution tracking methodological or theoretical conceptualizations of ‘meaning’ and sense-making in combination with traces of use within the framework of understanding digital traces in a sociological perspective. Furthermore, we encourage ethnographic papers studying developers’ work processes when extracting meaning from massive data and acting on top of such predictions. Contributions are not expected to ‘solve’ the ‘meaning’ problem, but by sampling a selection of papers that explicitly discuss this issue in various empirical contexts we hope the special issue can point to further directions in the field of digital sociology. As such, contributors are urged to relate their proposals to the concepts of meaning- and sense-making taking into account that meaning-making is more than a methodological, theoretical and philosophical concept: it is related to how we empirically propose understandings of big as well as small data. Topics may include but are not limited to: -empirical studies of digital traces within a sociological framework -empirical or theoretical studies on transmissions from user data to actual usage -empirical studies of cross-platform usage as indicators of digital user practices -empirical studies or theoretical studies of representation in big data analysis and relations between big data and small data -empirical studies of algorithms and media platform usage -theoretical and methodological discussions on digital sociology, e.g. (lack of) context sensitivity in machine learning (e.g. neural networks or clustering models) applied to digital sociology -historical accounts of ‘meaning’ and ‘reasoning’ in AI, and of ‘meaning’ and ‘sense-making’ in qualitative studies within digital sociology -human-machine communication studies of bots -STS studies of developers’ work processes with big data and machine learning; critical discussions on internet profiling, algorithms and AI; auditing studies of machine learning algorithms; ontologies and (lack of) classifiers in big data and associated machine learning methods Key dates: 1 September 2017: Deadline for abstracts (max. 500 words, excl. references, and additionally a short author bio, max. 150 words). another round of cfp International Handbook of Internet Research v2
by Jeremy Hunsinger 05 Jun '17

05 Jun '17

(as several of the editors had life events happen, and we need around 20-30 more chapters before our deadline, we are having a another round for the CFP) Call for Abstracts for Chapters Volume 2 of the International Handbook of Internet Research (editors Jeremy Hunsinger, Lisbeth Klastrup, and Matthew Allen) Abstracts due July 17; full chapters due Sept. 1 2017 After the remarkable success of the first International Handbook of Internet Research (2010), Springer has contracted with its editors to produce a second volume. This new volume will be arranged in two sections, that address one of two different aspects of internet research: foundations, and futures. Each of these meta-themes will have its own section of the new handbook. Foundations will approach a method, a theory, a perspective, a topic or field that has been and is still a location of significant internet research. These chapters will engage with the current and historical scholarly literature through extended reviews and also as a way of developing insights into the internet and internet research. Futures will engage with the directions the field of internet research might take over the next five years. These chapters will engage current methods, topics, perspectives, or fields that will expand and re-invent the field of internet research, particularly in light of emerging social and technological trends. The material for these chapters will define the topic they describe within the framework of internet research so that it can be understand as a place of future inquiry. We value the way in which this call for papers will itself shape the contents, themes, and coverage of the Handbook. We encourage potential authors to present abstracts that will consolidate current internet research, critically analyse its directions past and future, and re-invent the field for the decade to come. Contributions about the internet and internet research are sought from scholars in any discipline, and from many points of view. We therefore invite internet researchers working within the fields of communication, culture, politics, sociology, law and privacy, aesthetics, games and play, surveillance and mobility, amongst others, to consider contributing to the volume. Initially, we ask scholars and researchers to submit an 500 word abstract detailing their own chapter for one of the two sections outlined above. The abstract must follow the format presented below. After the initial round of submissions, there may be a further call for papers and/or approaches to individuals to complete the volume. The final chapters will be chosen from the submitted abstracts by the editors or invited by the editors. The chapter writers will be notified of acceptance within 2 weeks. The chapters will be due September 2017, should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words (inclusive of references, biographical statement and all other text). Each abstract needs to be presented in the following form: · Section (Either Foundations or Futures) · Title of chapter · Author name/s, institutional details · Corresponding author’s email address · Keywords (no more than 5) · Abstract (no more than 500 words) · References Please e-mail your abstract/s to: internet.research.handbook(a)gmail.com We look forward to your submissions and working with you to produce another definitive collection of thought-provoking internet research. Please feel free to distribute this CfP widely. Thank you Jeremy, Lisbeth, and Matt

Hi all, I am conducting some research on what kind of information political advocacy groups provide their users about the data they collect through various channels: websites, social media, etc. Can you recommend some must-read literature on the subject? This would include literature on data privacy policies and related matters. I know that sounds broad but I just want to make sure my lit review is solid. Thanks! Luis - - - - - Dr. Luis E.
