CfP: ComplexRec 2017 (RecSys'17 Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios)
by Toine Bogers 29 May '17

29 May '17

==================================================================================== RecSys'17 Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios (ComplexRec 2017) http://complexrec2017.aau.dk Como, Italy August 31, 2017 ==================================================================================== --------------- Important dates --------------- * Paper submission deadline: June 6, 2017 (before midnight, anywhere on Earth) * Notification of acceptance: July 9, 2017 * Camera-ready deadline: July 18, 2017 * RecSys 2017: August 31, 2017 ------------------------ Description & Objectives ------------------------ Over the past decade, recommendation algorithms for ratings prediction and item ranking have steadily matured. However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user's more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2017 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation -- Approaches that take the user's background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Feature-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation -- Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user's recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Interactive recommendation -- Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Context-aware recommendation -- Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources -- Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation -- Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 2-4 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short 10-minute presentations with equal time for discussion. Evaluation criteria for acceptance will include novelty, diversity, significance for theory/practice, quality of presentation, and the potential for sparking interesting discussion at the workshop. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop. All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be formatted in the ACM Proceedings Style (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) and submitted via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=complexrec2017) Submissions will be published in the workshop proceedings (CEUR-WS). ---------- Organizers ---------- * Toine Bogers (toine(a)hum.aau.dk) Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark * Marijn Koolen (marijn.koolen(a)gmail.com) Huygens Institute, the Netherlands * Bamshad Mobasher (mobasher(a)cs.depaul.edu) DePaul University, USA * Alan Said (alansaid(a)acm.org) University of Skövde, Sweden * Alexander Tuzhilin (atuzhili(a)stern.nyu.edu) NYU Stern School of Business, USA For further questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee.

Social Media and Communities @ HICSS (CFP, deadline June 15)
by Dan Suthers 29 May '17

29 May '17

Dear colleagues: HICSS has several mini-tracks of interest to AoIR; here is a reminder of ours. Deadline is not under our control. ----------------------------- Social Media and Communities -- a "mini-track" at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, (HICSS-51) January 3-6, 2018, Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hawaii Full paper submission deadline, June 15 We call for papers that address social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media for work, learning, socializing, economic and/or political processes, and/or that address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of such social media use. ‘Communities’ is taken in a broad sense, including communities of practice, epistemic communities, or communities of inquiry, as well as fully virtual communities, and social media use that supports or complements geographically based community. We particularly encourage papers that: * advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; * explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; * evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and * develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes. We encourage the submission of exploratory and theoretical papers, as well as empirical studies. HICSS 51 and the "Big Island" The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, in its 51st year, is one of the longstanding scientific conferences and is highly ranked among information systems conferences. Diverse disciplines unified by a focus on information technologies are woven together in a matrix structure of tracks and themes. CFP: The Intersections of Learning, Technology, & Politics in a Climate of Fear, Oppression, and Nationalism
by Antero Garcia 28 May '17

28 May '17

Hi everyone, I realize the deadline for this is around the corner, but wanted to re-circulate this CFP for an issue of Learning, Media and Technology that I am co-editing. Please email me off-list if there are any questions! Thanks, Antero Full CFP here: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/ed/cjem_si_call_4_2017 <http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/ed/cjem_si_call_4_2017> Proposals are invited for papers for a special issue of the journal on the theme of The Intersections of Learning, Technology, & Politics in a Climate of Fear, Oppression, and Nationalism The special issue will be edited by Antero Garcia (Stanford University, USA) and Thomas M. Philip (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) Learning, Media and Technology is acknowledged as one of the learning academic journals in the fields of educational technology and educational media. This special issue will present research exploring how the current nationalist and oppressive sociopolitical environment--seen globally--shapes youth identities and learning practices in both formal and informal environments. We want to interrogate how learning and the role of technology are affected by a political climate that sees a rise in global far-right movements, as evidenced by the wake of prominent recent events like Brexit and the 2016 U.S. presidential election. As guest editors in the U.S., we are particularly cognizant of a localized context in which a successful presidential campaign can be built on foundations of racism (Kendall, 2016), religious intolerance (Rosenberg & Ainsley, 2016) sexual assault (Burns, Haberman, & Martin, 2016), misogyny (Khazan, 2016), xenophobia (Sargent, 2016), and a disregard for science and the environment; we see today’s political actions shaping the landscape of learning and technology long after the administration of individual leaders. As a result, the papers in this issue will explore the broader landscape of the current political climate, rather than focusing exclusively on specific figures and events. They will offer new understandings and narratives of learning, engagement, and resistance. The intersections of learning, technology, and politics are pervasive in the lives of young people; exploring how information and technology shape the contours of the spaces in which learning takes place, we seek to center the voices and needs of youth. Further, this issue underscores that these shifts are happening globally and we are specifically interested in looking at how nationalism and far-right movements affect youth learning and engagement in myriad, global contexts. We also see broader civic, educative, and social-emotional concerns arising at the same time that one-to-one digital device initiatives and emphasis on STEM learning claim to be ushering in equitable learning opportunities for all youth regardless of socioeconomics, culture, race, or gender. In considering how issues of capitalism and neoliberalism underpin both the educational shifts in classrooms and the ushering in of a nationalistic political paradigm, this issue will highlight the fundamental role that media and technology play in this specific moment. We are mindful that the contexts of learning are part of the current political moment and tied to neo-liberal capitalist practices. We invite papers for this issue of Learning, Media and Technology that come from a variety of research methods, theoretical approaches and country perspectives. We are particularly interested in papers that are authored, co-authored, or take into account the voices and perspectives of those most vulnerable in the present political moment not limited to youth of color, women, members of a religious minority, and individuals that identify as LGBTQ. Papers might explore such questions as: How are youth identities being shaped by the current landscape of nationalism, exclusion, and symbolic violence, particularly through new media? What role does technology play in reinforcing and/or resisting hurtful discourses? In what ways can empirical research around learning and technology take up an emphasis of solidarity and/or resistance to exclusionary educational and social policies? How does symbolic violence in social media shape feelings of nationalism and identity, particularly for youth? How are digital tools, artificial intelligence, and machine learning shaping global contexts such as the election of Trump and Brexit? How are youth learning about, responding to, and unpacking the contexts of neoliberal society in both formal and informal environments? What tools are leveraged in this discourse? How are contemporary social science and educational methodologies illuminating or occluding dominant hegemonic discourses within the work conducted in schools? Submission Instructions We are currently soliciting abstracts for proposed papers for the special issue. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and be accompanied by up to six keywords. Deadline for submission of abstract: 1st June 2017 Successful authors informed: 1st July 2017 Deadline for submission of full papers: 15th January 2018 Full papers are expected to be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (please refer to the journal website for full ‘instructions for authors’). All papers will be subject to the usual blind reviewing and refereeing processes. Please send abstracts and keywords to the guest editors by 1st June 2017: Email: Antero Garcia (antero.garcia(a)stanford.edu) Please put ‘abstract Learning, Media and Technology’ in the subject. -- Antero Garcia, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Graduate School of Education Stanford University 520 Galvez Mall Stanford, CA 94305

Literature on dimensions/attributes of online communities?
by Spencer P. Greenhalgh 27 May '17

Hello all, I'm beginning a project that is focused on making distinctions between different Twitter hashtags based on the type and/or "amount" of community that is present in each. Because I'm relatively new to online communities, I want to make sure I'm not missing important work in this area. Are there any resources that you would recommend for thinking about what makes up an online community and what distinguishes different online communities from each other? Many thanks!
