The Mediated Conversation minitrack @ HICSS-51: Submission deadline in 3 weeks
by Yoram Kalman 26 May '17

26 May '17

The Mediated Conversation HICSS minitrack is home for research on the interface of conversation and technology. Conversations are at the heart of every human activity. Mediated conversations that use text, audio, images and video are a part of every aspect of life: From the Cluetrain Manifesto’s “markets are conversations”, through Robin Dunbar’s conversations as devices for social grooming. Accordingly, this minitrack is open to research on mediated conversation from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including Communication, Management, Education, Computer Science, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Linguistics, Law, and the like. As the role of mediated conversation in everyday life and in the workplace becomes more dominant, we encounter new research questions. Many mediated conversations leave a persistent record and become persistent conversations. This persistence transforms the essence of conversation that was, until recently, predominantly volatile and ephemeral. On the other hand, some forms of mediated conversation are deliberately ephemeral and impermanent, as demonstrated by media such as Snapchat. This is the successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999, which was originally focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. Since then, the mediation of human communication has been imposing a new set of challenges. For example, what are the mechanisms that perform the role of the ephemeral social cues of face-to-face conversation? What are the consequences of the creation of potentially permanent records in terms of privacy, accountability, and the right to be forgotten? What of the ability to erase, steal, hijack and selectively leak and disseminate conversations that were meant to remain under the control of their participants? How do platforms affect or mediate conversations, for example by imposing algorithmic biases? Can we evaluate the claims about loss of intimacy, depth, and quality of human communication when carried out digitally? This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore mediated conversation and its implications for learning, commercial transactions, entertainment, news, politics, and other forms of human interaction; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. Examples of appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: * Innovation in digital conversational practice: turn-taking, threading, and other structural features of CMC * The dynamics and analysis of large scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) * Methods for analyzing mediated conversation * Studies of virtual communities or other sites of digital conversation * The role of mediated conversation in knowledge management * The role of mediated conversation in organizations * Domain specific applications, opportunities and challenges of mediated conversations and conversational exchanges (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation) * Conversation visualization, and visual cues * The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions * Novel properties of mediated conversation * Social presence and the mediation of an attributed user’s identity * The platform's role in mediating the conversation The submission site is: https://confs.precisionconference.com/~hicss/ *Submission deadline: June 15, 2017, 11:59 pm HST* For questions, please contact one of the co-chairs *Minitrack Co-Chairs:* *Sheizaf Rafaeli* (Primary Contact) University of Haifa sheizaf(a)rafaeli.net *Yoram M Kalman* The Open University of Israel yoramka(a)openu.ac.il *Carmel Kent* University of Exeter, UK kent.carmel(a)gmail.com Since 1968, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) has been known worldwide as the longest-standing working scientific conferences in Information Technology Management. Book announcement
by T. V. 25 May '17

25 May '17

Dear All, We are very pleased to announce that our anthology entitled Teaching Computational Creativity<http://www.cambridge.org/core/books/teaching-computational-creativity/0705D…> has been published by Cambridge University Press. The book is of possible interest to educators dealing with the practical implications of teaching computational media to students in the fields of arts and humanities. Teaching Computational Creativity examines the new interdisciplinary pedagogies of today's coding-intensive interactive media and design curricula. Students, researchers and faculty will find a comprehensive overview of educational practices pertaining to innovation fields such as digital media, 3D printing, agile development, physical computing, games, dance, collaboration, teacher education and online learning. This volume fills an important gap in the literature on creative computation, as practitioners are rarely challenged to reflect on or share their teaching practices. How do we design effective inter-, multi-, cross- and trans-disciplinary pedagogy and curricula? Brought together here are essays on the pedagogies that produce the so-called 'unicorns' - graduates who can code and create. Here, the intertwining of (what many consider mutually exclusive) artistic sensitivities and computational skills plays an essential role, calling forth a new kind of undergraduate curriculum attuned to the interweaving of skillsets and theoretic knowledge needed to create and innovate with ever-changing technologies. Digital Intimacies 3.0: Connections & Disconnections, Melbourne, Nov 13-15
by Brady Robards 25 May '17

25 May '17

Hello AoIR! Please see the below call for abstracts for the third annual Digital Intimacies symposium, this year to be held in Melbourne, Australia, at RMIT. We hope you will consider joining us. https://digitalintimacies.tumblr.com/ Cheers, Brady -- *Digital Intimacies 3.0: Connections & Disconnections - Call for Papers* November 13-15, 2017 RMIT, Melbourne, Australia Abstracts due: June 30 Convenors: Jenny Kennedy (RMIT), Brady Robards (Monash), and Tania Lewis (RMIT) Keynotes: Prof. Kath Albury (Swinburne) and more to be announced Digital media have come to occupy a central role in the mediation, recording, and remembering of intimate lives: from geolocative traces, romantic relationships on Facebook, private Snapchats, pictures of newborns on Instagram, and hook-ups on Tinder or Grindr, to shared survival stories of assault and sexual violence on Reddit. Going beyond the logic of connectivity and sharing that dominates much of the research into digital media, Light (2014) has drawn attention to the various ways in which digital media can also operate as sites of disconnection. As digital traces of lives mediated in digital spaces bleed and permeate, echoes of intimacies are regularly resurfaced: untagged photos, archived emails, unfriended people, deleted apps. These traces evidence episodes of disconnection as much as connection. - What can the study of digital media reveal about disconnections in our intimate lives? - In what ways do digital media shape both our connections and disconnections? - What questions are raised about what (or who) we delete and how we remember? - What is the role of automation in intimate connections and disconnections? Following the success of the first two Digital Intimacies symposia, held at UQ and hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), convened by Amy Dobson, Nic Carah, and Brady Robards, this year we are bringing the event to Melbourne, to be hosted at RMIT by the School of Media and Communication. The single stream symposium will run for two days, November 13 + 14, 2017. This year, there will be an optional third day (November 15) of collaborative workshops. The idea here is to capture the energy from the symposium and provide space for collaborative work and further discussions. We are again calling for paper abstracts on the themes of digital media and intimate lives, with particular interest around the theme of connection and disconnection. Please submit abstracts of 250-300 words to jenny.kennedy(a)rmit.edu.au by June 30, 2017. We will send notifications of acceptances out by mid-July. We are hoping to make this a low-cost event, especially for students, but there may be a small registration fee to cover costs. -- *Dr Brady Robards* Lecturer in Sociology School of Social Sciences, Monash University +61 3 9905 2465 <+61%203%209905%202465> bradyrobards.com

Research Seminar: Openness in education: content, collaboration, connectivity
by Scott Rodgers 24 May '17

24 May '17

Satellite Research Seminar 6pm, 24 May 2017 (followed by a wine reception) Birkbeck, University of London Room G01, 43 Gordon Square, WC1H 0PD Free and open to all Openness in education: content, collaboration, connectivity Leo Havemann Learning Technologist, Birkbeck Abstract The proliferation and politicisation of the concept of openness in educational contexts invites us to consider whether teaching and learning in higher education (HE) can ever truly be considered open or closed and therefore what, if anything, is to be gained by claiming educational practices are open. A key strand of the drive to open education is the movement for Open Educational Resources (OER), which proposes that the application of open, permissive licenses to teaching and learning resources is a means of widening access to knowledge and enhancing teaching quality. More recently, the literature on Open Education has seen a shift away from a resource-focused discussion, to an inclusive but wider notion of Open Educational Practices (OEP) (Andrade et al., 2011). OEP are often understood to involve working with open content and facilitating access to knowledge ‘in the open’, such as through the development of open resources by students as a form of assessment. However, the nature of openness when discussing OEP is more multifaceted and elusive than in the OER context, as the aspirations and implications of OEP resist simplistic and bounded explanations and are perhaps better understood as residing in forms of collaboration or connectivity (Cronin, 2017; Nascimbeni & Burgos, 2016). While many educators within HE choose to share their work and reveal their processes for the benefit of others, enthusiasm for OEP may be dampened by the perception that this creates additional labour and lacks professional recognition and reward. This seminar will consider the usefulness of the notion of OEP with regard to a case study of a Birkbeck module designed to support students to ‘Step Up to Postgraduate Study in Arts’. I will also consider the structural, technical and skills barriers that inhibit the wider adoption of openness in education, arguing that OEP is best understood as a commitment to opening up access to knowledge as a social and public good, which connects to deeper historical notions of the purposes of HE.
