Book Announcement - Worried About the Wrong Things: Youth, Risk, and Opportunity in the Digital Age
by Jacqueline Vickery 23 May '17

23 May '17

I'm excited to announce that my first book,* Worried About the Wrong Things: Youth, Risk, and Opportunity in the Digital Age, <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org>* is now available (The MIT Press, 2017). It is likely of interest to digital scholars, as well as to educators and youth-serving organizations. Many in the AoIR community have offered support and feedback along the way and I thank you all for that and further look forward to hopefully thanking some of you in person in Estonia. Best, - jacqueline **Overview It’s a familiar narrative in both real life and fiction, from news reports to television storylines: a young person is bullied online, or targeted by an online predator, or exposed to sexually explicit content. The consequences are bleak; the young person is shunned, suicidal, psychologically ruined. In this book, Jacqueline Ryan Vickery argues that there are other urgent concerns about young people’s online experiences besides porn, predators, and peers. We need to turn our attention to inequitable opportunities for participation in a digital culture. Technical and material obstacles prevent low-income and other marginalized young people from the positive, community-building, and creative experiences that are possible online. Vickery explains that cautionary tales about online risk have shaped the way we think about technology and youth. She analyzes the discourses of risk in popular culture, journalism, and policy, and finds that harm-driven expectations, based on a privileged perception of risk, enact control over technology. Opportunity-driven expectations, on the other hand, based on evidence and lived experience, produce discourses that acknowledge the practices and agency of young people rather than seeing them as passive victims who need to be protected. Vickery first addresses how the discourses of risk regulate and control technology, then turns to the online practices of youth at a low-income, minority-majority Texas high school. She considers the participation gap and the need for schools to teach digital literacies, privacy, and different online learning ecologies. Finally, she shows that opportunity-driven expectations can guide young people’s online experiences in ways that balance protection and agency. ** *Dr. Jacqueline Ryan **Vickery, Ph.D.* Assistant Professor Department of Media Arts <http://mediaarts.unt.edu/> College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences University of North Texas @JacVick | http://jrvickery.com/ <http://jrvickery.com/> *"Let us go forth with fear and courage and rage to save the world." - * *Grace Paley*

Digital Needs and the Commons under Informational Capitalism A WIAS research seminar with talks by Sebastian Sevignani and Benjamin Birkinbine Tue, June 6, 18:00-20:00 309 Regent Street, W1B 2HW, London Boardroom Organised by the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies (WIAS) Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/digital-needs-and-the-commons-under-informat… How can we define informational “needs?” What type of information is necessary for human development, survival, and social progress? What is in this context the role of the information commons and digital commons? In what ways does capitalism restrict the fulfillment of these needs? In this seminar, Dr. Sebastian Sevignani reflects on what needs are, how they develop, and offers proposals for what informational needs might be. Dr. Benjamin Birkinbine focuses specifically on the informational commons as one way to provide for such needs, while highlighting the contradictions that these movements face under capitalism. The overall goal for this discussion is to work toward a critical theory of needs under informational capitalism. Benjamin J Birkinbine is Assistant Professor of Media Studies at University of Nevada, Reno. Whilst based at WIAS as international research fellow, he works towards a critical theory of the digital commons. Sebastian Sevignani is Assistant Professor at the Department for General Sociology and Sociological Theory, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. As WIAS international research fellow he works on foundations of a theory of digital needs. For updates, subscribe to WIAS-newsletter: https://www.westminster.ac.uk/newsletter

CFP - Crowds at Risk: Exploitation, Creative Destruction, and the Unintended Effects of Crowdsourcing Workshop @ ECSCW 2017
by Karin Hansson 23 May '17

23 May '17

[Apologies for cross-postings] Call for Papers: Extended deadline June 2 Crowds at Risk: Exploitation, Creative Destruction, and the Unintended Effects of Crowdsourcing Workshop at the 15th European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW 2017, August 28 – September 01) Location, Date: Sheffield (UK), August 29 2017 Organizers: Thomas Ludwig (University of Siegen), Karin Hansson (Stockholm University), Tanja Aitamurto (Stanford University), Christoph Kotthaus (University of Siegen), Elizabeth Anne Watkins (Columbia University), Ujwal Gadiraju (Leibniz Universität Hannover), Enric Senabre Hidalgo (Open University of Catalonia) Deadline for Submission: June, 2 2017 Webpage: http://crowdsatrisk.hci-workshop.org/ Abstract: Crowdsourcing comes with a number of positive promises for organizations: Cost reduction, a 24-hour workforce, and short-term knowledge gathering. On the other hand, this „creative destruction“ undermines labor rights and regulations. Unfair and opaque payment systems and socio-spatial inequalities among crowd workers are some of the pitfalls of crowdsourcing. ICT can lead to exploitation of the crowds and other negative (unintended) effects of crowdsourcing. This workshop examines crowds that are at risk (e.g. children), their characteristics and behaviors and the role of ICT within the crowd work. We welcome researchers from a diversity of disciplines and perspectives to illuminate insights into crowds at risk and trying to shed light on questions about what the destructive forces at work are, how work is changing, and what unregulated areas of “work” are exploited. Topics: – Ethical issues and groups at risk within crowdsourcing – ICT tools and attempts to establish sustainable work cultures online – Empirical studies about crowds at risk – Crowdsourcing contexts vulnerable for exploitation – ICT-driven new forms of labor – Crowd-workers responsible for their own infrastructures – Cybersecurity – Laws and regulating of child work/consumption online – Cases of exploitation of children as crowd workers – The gamification of the lifeworld – Citizen-based crisis management groups at risk – Cases of crowdsourcing as self fulfilment or self-exploitation – Crowd work and ownership in Platform Cooperativism Schedule: May 19: Submission May 19 – June 02: Review Phase June 02: Notification The position paper should be 2-4 pages and follow the ECSCW exploratory papers template. Send submissions and inquiries to the following email address: crowdsatrisk(a)listerv.uni-siegen.de<mailto:crowdsatrisk@listerv.uni-siegen.de>. At least one author of the position paper must attend the workshop. All participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. With best regards, Karin Hansson (on behalf of all organizers). -- ____________________________________ Karin Hansson PhD Dept. of Computer and Systems Sciences Stockholm University Postbox 7003, 164 07 Kista, SWEDEN Visiting address: Borgarfjordsgatan 12, Kista E-mail: khansson(a)dsv.su.se<mailto:khansson@dsv.su.se> people.dsv.su.se/khansson<http://people.dsv.su.se/khansson> ____________________________________

CFP: Digital Media and Borders: Infrastructures, Mobilities, and Practices across Asia and Beyond
by Rolien Hoyng 23 May '17

23 May '17

*Digital Media and Borders: Infrastructures, Mobilities, and Practices across Asia and Beyond* *Workshop* * 7-9 December 2017* * Lingnan University, Hong Kong* Invited speakers: Brett Neilson, Jack Qiu, Ned Rossiter, Nishant Shah, Ravi Sundaram Workshop organizers: Rolien Hoyng, Iam-chong Ip, Lisa Leung, Yvonne Yau Sponsored by: Lingnan University and Kwan Fong Cultural Research and Development Programme. Digital communication, despite its apparent immateriality, remains dependent on infrastructure placed somewhere. This workshop focuses on the intersection of urban situatedness and geo-location in order to examine the spatial relations that digital infrastructures either make part of or generate, especially in Asia. The internet features a layered design, including undersea cables, Cloud architecture, platforms, and apps. In what ways does this design reproduce or undo borders and territories? Relinquishing assumptions of a singular global regime of cybernetic power, how does the internet as stack transform the governance of populations, now addressed as “users,” and what contradictions emerge in this process? Moreover, considering that different bodies relate to digital infrastructure differently, how do users negotiate and exploit the modes of power afforded by digital infrastructure? How do these processes amount to either the reproduction of dominant formations of citizenship or alternative identifications and subjectivities, for instance for migrants or “uncivil” users? We welcome critical scholarship and non-traditional inquiries that help us reflect on digital infrastructures and practices in relation to the production of space and the particularities of place and context in Asia and beyond. Topics include but are not limited to: - Digital infrastructure, (extra)statecraft, urbanisms - Local or global apps, platforms, and data-driven governance - Speculative digital culture - “Uncivil” webs: hacking, porn, radical free speech, trolling - Digital media, citizenship, populism - Digital media, migration, and belonging A conference dinner is planned for the evening of 7 December. On the morning of the 9th we invite you to join a local excursion exploring digital infrastructure and borders in Hong Kong. There is no conference fee. Abstracts of max. 500 words are due by 15 July and should be sent to digitalmediaonsite(a)gmail.com. Authors will be notified of acceptance via email by the end of July. Full papers are expected no shorter than 10 days before the start of the workshop. Please provide full name, affiliation, contact information, and a short bio with your abstract submission. Guidelines for presentation will be provided upon acceptance of the abstract. CFP HICSS Minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS
by Fichman, Pnina 22 May '17

22 May '17

CFP HICSS Minitrack Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS) January 4-7, 2017, Big Island, Hawaii, USA Kauai, Hawaii, USA http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ Papers Due: June 15, 2016 This minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. In line with the track recognition that the Internet has transformed the way we work, learn, and play, our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * The impacts of cultural values (e.g. on adaptive user interfaces) on ICT design, adoption, and use. * The impact of cultural values on policies and practices of big data collection and use (e.g., * Cross cultural studies of quantification of self at work, by individuals or organizations * Cross-cultural comparisons of big data collection and use * Cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons of ICT adoption, use and development (e.g. Internet diffusion and impacts compared between different economies) * Effects of global social computing on work organization and practices (e.g. pricing strategies) * Issues relating to globally distributed teams (e.g. the adoption and use of social media by cross-national virtual teams, worker motivation, and human error diversity) * Issues relating to Internet adoption and the digital society at the national level (e.g. digital infrastructure sophistication across countries) *Issues relating to global knowledge management (e.g. different knowledge-sharing cultures in multi-national corporations) *Issues relating to cross-national legislation and regulation (e.g. implications of different regulations governing Green IT in the EU vs. US or Asian countries) * Issues relating to global ICT governance (e.g. sustainable strategies for standardization and harmonization in evolving business networks) * Research on global Cloud sourcing strategies *Single country studies showing implications for other locations or results different from other contexts (e.g. impact of ICT policies on a transition economy) * Multi-country studies of ICT adoption, use, and development (e.g. e-commerce adoption involving multiple countries) * Global impacts of big data on governments, multinational companies, NGOs and other organizations Minitrack Organizers: Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington; fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu> Edward W.N. Bernroider, Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), Institute for Information Management and Control, Vienna, Austria; edward.bernroider(a)wu.ac.at<mailto:edward.bernroider@wu.ac.at> Erran Carmel, Kogod School of Business, American University, Washington D.C.; carmel(a)american.edu<mailto:carmel@american.edu> About HICSS conferences: Now in its 50th year, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) is one of the longest-standing continuously running scientific conferences. Online violence references?
by Firuzeh Shokooh Valle 22 May '17

22 May '17

Dear List, One of the chapters of my dissertation is on online violence against women and other marginalized communities in the global south. I was wondering if anyone could send me recent academic references of feminist scholarship on online violence (does not have to be situated in the global south). I will be happy to share with you all once I have compiled a list. Thank you! Best, Firuzeh -- Firuzeh Shokooh Valle
