While dedicated privacy scholars (from media, politics, cultural studies, surveillance, law and information studies) will obtain fresh insights, I’ve kept this very student-friendly. ENDORSEMENTS Privacy and the Media is a thoughtful survey of the privacy landscape. McStay reviews the intricate tensions and seeming contradictions to offer an accessible book for anyone curious about the contemporary debates in privacy. danah boyd Microsoft Research (US) This pleasingly accessible book tackles all the major questions that arise in a world whose lifeblood is our personal information; liberty, choice, transparency, control. It goes to the “conceptual, ethical and legal heart of privacy”. McStay argues that privacy is “not about isolation, going off-grid or being a digital hermit”. Rather, it is about managing our online lives and controlling how much others know about us. This book persuades me more than ever that privacy is a branch of ethics – the age-old relationship between the self and the other. Privacy and the Media’ is not a set of neatly answered questions or defences of established positions. It is a series of embarkation points for further exploration of an increasingly critical area of study, with real-world implications for the nature of our ‘datafied’ selves. The book will serve as a great introduction to informational privacy, not just for media studies students and privacy lawyers, but for any information rights professional needing a deeper understanding of the subject. Iain Bourne Information Commissioner's Office (UK) The only book that addresses the full spectrum of the innovation-privacy dynamic, ranging from advertising to intelligence to wearables. It is both timely and necessary; essential reading. Gus Hosein Privacy International McStay’s great achievement here is to confront many of the pertinent and complex questions about media and privacy in a style that is both authoritative and easy to read. He provides an excellent overview of the perennial debates and considers the implications on privacy of an increasingly data-driven media environment. His book will prove an excellent companion for all students of this fascinating and crucial topic. Prof. Mireille Hildebrandt Vrije Universitet Brussel Clearly and accessibly written, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in the broad range of ways in which privacy and contemporary media are entangled and in the big picture of privacy/media relations today. It challenges media studies to take privacy seriously as a media – and a mediation – issue. I will definitely be assigning it for my students. Travel Scholarships for #AoIR2017

In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available several conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. These stipends are mostly funded through the generosity of our membership. Applications are invited from authors whose proposals have already been accepted via the conference reviewing process, as well as by PhD Students applying to the Doctoral Colloquium. All applications should be emailed directly to the Association Coordinator, Michelle Gardner (ac at AoIR.org) and must be received by May 20, 2017. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should include (1) a short (2-page) CV and (2) a statement no longer than 2 pages that must include the following information: 1. A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the #AoIR2017 conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the conference. 2. An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Please include any information on access you have to additional funding. 3. AoIR membership is encouraged but is not a requirement for the application. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with their circumstances, special needs, etc. A letter of support is not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 (with one stipend of up to $1,500) will be awarded. Awards are intended to reimburse participants for incurred expenses and will be paid out after the conference. The awardee is required to provide expense receipts to AoIR in order access travel stipends. Decisions are made on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR conference. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a travel award from AoIR. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also enrich the #AoIR2017 conference for all attendees. Capturing an audience and making a living has become increasingly difficult for indie developers, placing many in positions of economic and cultural precarity. In addition to the considerable labour of making games, to have a hope of success, developers must be constantly hustling and managing relationships with networks of other developers, players, and industry actors, as well as within their own teams. In this perilous environment, entrepreneurial and business acumen is of equal if not greater importance as creative vision and technical skill. Contrary to the romantic indie auteurism exemplified by Indie Game: The Movie, in the contemporary indie gaming ecosystem, press, curators, and popular influencers, publishers, platform holders, government agencies, community organizations, co-working hubs, festivals, and other institutional actors play a crucial role. These intermediaries, brokers, coordinators, and maintainers do not primarily make or consume games; rather they “interface” between different sectors of the game industry and gaming culture, producing or extracting value and exerting a structuring influence on the field. These aspects of indie game development elude analysis; they are rarely acknowledged and difficult for outsiders to perceive. The “Indie Interfaces” symposium seeks to redress this by examining the largely invisible labour and social-material scaffolding that enables and sustains indie game development. “Indie Interfaces” is an intimate industry-academic symposium designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between academics and influential actors working in the field of indie games. Held in Montréal, a city renowned for its diverse and vibrant game development communities, this pathbreaking event will combine roundtable discussions among industry attendees and academic research presentations to foster productive, critical dialogue and collaboration. Moving beyond definitional debates about what counts as indie, this symposium is intended to stimulate innovative, interdisciplinary academic work that can feed forward into game industry practices. We are seeking submissions from academics doing research on indie games (defined broadly), with a specific focus on the actors, objects, and processes that scaffold independent game production, distribution, and consumption. Dementia Lab 2017 - stories from design and research 6 & 7 September 2017 (Dortmund, Germany) The theme for this year’s Dementia Lab is sharing the underlying questions that designers, researchers and educators face in their design process for and together with people with dementia. These questions vary from such practical challenges as recruiting persons with dementia to finding funding before a project begins or failing to have a method work as expected. Designers may struggle to find a way of communicating with people with dementia when words fail or have a hard time coping with the stress of dealing with people who are in constant mental and physical decline. Finally, once a design is made, designers and researchers often encounter resistance to the first iterations of the things designed or have difficulty integrating the designs into the routines of daily life and care. This second edition of the Dementia Lab event, wishes to support the sharing of these successes and failures by inviting contributions from designers and researchers who are designing for and together with persons with dementia. The event program is open for traditional contributions such as papers and workshop proposals. Additionally, there is the possibility to share experiences through stories as well as showcase the designs made for persons with dementia. The poster exhibition gives the opportunity to discuss preliminary ideas or share an experience in a poster format. Selected submissions will be published in the event proceedings. Who produces it? Who is excluded and who is included? - Where is digital scholarship published, promoted, and publicized? Is the message reaching the audience it deserves? - How is digital scholarship incorporated into the existing conversations of traditional scholarship? - What are the resources for sustaining digital scholarship? How are those resources going to change in the future? Can digital scholarship be done inexpensively without sacrificing quality? - Does digital scholarship have a responsibility to be open or engaged beyond the academy? How are these different responsibilities defined and grappled with? - Should digital scholarship be defined? Where should a definition of digital scholarship begin? What ends should it be directed toward? #BUDSC17 is committed to expanding the definition of digital scholarship to be more inclusive across diverse communities, both inside and outside of academia. The conference will bring together a broad community of practitioners--faculty, researchers, librarians, artists, educational technologists, students, administrators, and others--engaged in digital scholarship both in research and teaching who share an interest in the evolution of digital scholarship. The theme “Looking Forward, Looking Back: The Evolution of Digital Scholarship” acknowledges the changes to scholarship wrought by the introduction of digital technologies across the disciplines. Now is an apt time to reflect upon how digital scholarship has evolved over the past decades and where it may head in the future. Scholars and teachers, poets and administrators, artists and community members, are encouraged to reflect on the past of digital scholarship and work together to build a future for digital scholarship. We invite proposals that explore or critique digital modes of scholarly, cultural, and political intersectionality. Special consideration will be given to proposals that demonstrate how digital scholarship has been done in the past and how it may change in the future. Presentations may take the form of interactive presentations, project demos, electronic posters, panel discussions, work-in-progress sessions, workshops, lightning talks, or other creative formats. We look forward to building on the success of the last three years, in which we came together to discuss challenges, share working models, reflect on projects, and inspire new avenues for actively including students in public scholarly pursuits.
