Reminder: FOCI/USENIX May 26 submission deadline
by jon penney 18 May '17

18 May '17

Hi everyone, Just wanted to send out a quick reminder about the deadline (next week!) for submissions to the 7th USENIX Workshop on Free and Open Communications on the Internet (FOCI ’17), which will take place this summer in Vancouver, B.C., on August 14th. The deadline is *Friday, **May 26, 2017, 8:59 p.m. PDT. * For more details, the CFP is here: https://www.usenix.org/sites/ default/files/foci17_preliminary_cfp_042017.pdf FOCI is an interdisciplinary workshop co-located with the USENIX Security Symposium that seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields focused on censorship, surveillance, and other practices that inhibit free and open communications on the internet. This year I am co-chairing FOCI with Nick Weaver (of Berkeley, ICSI, and Lawfare fame), so let me know if you have any questions. Among those on the interdisciplinary Program Committee are folks like Roger Dingledine (The Tor Project), Kurt Opsahl (EFF), Lex Gill (Citizen Lab), Molly Sauter (McGill), and Nick Feamster (Princeton CITP). One of the changes we made this year to encourage a broader range of submissions is creating a "two track" submissions stream, one for traditional FOCI technical papers and another for "law/social science" papers drawing on law, policy, or social science, with more flexible formatting and page limits. Please see the CfP for more details. Best, Jon -- jon(a)citizenlab.ca | @jon_penney <https://twitter.com/jon_penney> | jon(a)dal.ca

Media Manipulation and Disinformation Online Report Released w/ Syllabus
by Alice E. Marwick 17 May '17

17 May '17

Hi everyone! I'm very pleased to announce a giant new report I wrote with Becca Lewis on "Media Manipulation and Disinformation Online." You can find it here: https://datasociety.net/output/media-manipulation-and-disinfo-online/ In it, we talk about how far-right groups use a variety of techniques to spread and amplify their messaging through mainstream media. We talk about who these people are (trolls, white nationalists, men's rights activists); where they congregate online (the chans, various blogs and YouTube channels, Discord servers); the tactics and strategies they use (participatory culture, memes, radicalization); what motivates them (ideology, money, and status/fame), and some possible outcomes (misinformation, decreased trust in media, increased radicalization). It is 100pp long including an extensive bibliography. The report is very detailed, but is written in an accessible style that should appeal to non-academics as well. We've also released a syllabus (including assignments!) that you can use to incorporate the report into your classroom: https://datasociety.net/pubs/oh/DataAndSociety_Syllabus-MediaManipulationAn… Would love to hear feedback and please feel free to share with friends, colleagues, and social media. Call for Panels – Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) 2018
by Imge Ozcan 17 May '17

17 May '17

Dear all, The usual apology for cross-posting but this may be of interest to some on the list. Call for Panels CPDP2018 – The Internet of Bodies This call for panels is aimed at academic consortia, research projects, think tanks and other research organisations. (Another call, to individuals for academic research papers, will go out towards the end of May 2017) The overarching theme of the 2018 edition is the “Internet of Bodies”. Data collection increasingly focuses on the physical body. Bodies are increasingly connected, digitized and informatized. In turn, the data extracted is reassembled in ways that give rise to significant questions – challenging fundamental assumptions about where the corporeal ends and the informational begins. Biometrics, genetic data processing and the quantified self are only some of the trends and technologies reaching into the depths of our bodies. Emerging technologies such as human enhancement, neural implants and brain wave technology look likely to soon become a daily reality. We welcome cutting edge panels in all areas related to technology, privacy and data protection, but particularly invite proposals that fit the general conference theme. We encourage panels that are well-balanced, multidisciplinary and geographically and gender diverse. More information about rules for panel composition and submission can be found here: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/callforpanels.html#Form Please note: chosen institutions, organisations or EU research projects will become CPDP 2018 event partners. This implies that the event partner is able to finance all costs of the panel speakers (travel and lodging) in addition to paying a conference contribution of €1200. In return, the event partner’s logo will be visibly displayed on the CPDP website and the programme brochure. The partner will also have the option of putting a flyer or advertisement in the conference bag. All panelists will get free registration for the three conference days. Panel proposals should be submitted through the online form at: <http://www.cpdpconferences.org/callforpanels.html> http://www.cpdpconferences.org/callforpanels.html Please fill in the form as completely as possible. Key Dates Final panel submission/suggestion: June 16th, 2017 Notification sent to panel proposers: July 7th, 2017 Panel organisation finalised: October 14th, 2017 Dates of CPDP 2018: 24th to 26th January, 2018 Contact If you have an innovative idea for the set up of a panel or workshop or have any questions regarding potential panel topics, please contact the organisers at <mailto:info@cpdpconferences.org?subject=Response%20on%20mailing&body=Hello%2C> info(a)cpdpconferences.org Best wishes, Imge on behalf of the CPDP2018 Programme Committee Imge Ozcan Doctoral Researcher Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society Vrije Universiteit Brussel Join us for the next edition of the CPDP conference on 24 - 26 January 2018 in Brussels: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/

Re: [Air-L] AllLivesMatter and BlueLivesMatter Material
by Renata Aquino Ribeiro 17 May '17

Hi About BlueLivesMatter, I'm not sure if there are writings over this but I'd be really interested in the convergence between these movements and the police series like Chicago PD and similar. These are exported heavily and mainstreamed and here in Brazil independent media collectives have been working really hard to dennounce unfair persecution of black and poor people by the police. They are also getting their own local spin offs and during political crisis these can be used as tools against activists as well. If you can share your investigation would be great. Best, Renata

AllLivesMatter and BlueLivesMatter Material
by Ostertag, Stephen F 17 May '17

17 May '17

Hello AoIR listservers, I'm working on a paper that talks about police violence against black men and women in the U.S. and the emergence of radical protests within the context of the U.S. Civil Sphere. An important part of this was the creation of BlackLivesMatter as a collective representation and mobilizing mechanisms, but also its reactionary groups of AllLivesMatter and BlueLivesMatter. I have a good amount of literature on BlackLivesMatter, but was wondering if anyone could suggest material on AllLivesMatter and/or BlueLivesMatter. Thank you, Stephen Ostertag Stephen F. Friendly Reminder: Special Issue on Computational Propaganda and Political Big Data deadline coming June 1
by Gillian Bolsover 17 May '17

17 May '17

Hi Everyone: the submission deadline for our special issue of the journal Big Data is coming up June 1 and we are eager to see some manuscripts from this community if you feel ready to submit. Please see below for details and be in touch with any questions about the possible topics or process. Dr. Gillian Bolsover Researcher Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford PGP Key: 17EC60B3 Call for Papers: Special Issue on Computational Propaganda and Political Big Data We welcome manuscripts from scholars across the social and computer sciences, and are particularly interested in research from teams of authors from both domains of inquiry. Please submit your papers online to our web-based manuscript submission and peer-review at www.liebertpub.com/manuscript/big<http://www.liebertpub.com/manuscript/big>. http://comprop.oii.ox.ac.uk/2017/01/17/call-for-papers-special-issue-on-com… Computational propaganda—the use of information technologies for political purposes—is on the rise. Many different kinds of political actors use a wide range of computational systems, social media platforms, and big data analytics to understand and manipulate public opinion. The political use of algorithms over platforms like Twitter and Facebook has received much journalistic attention, but it can be difficult to relate the dissemination of content over social networks to changes in public opinion or voter preference. The firms behind these platforms, however, increasingly acknowledge that politically motivated algorithms and automation can have deleterious outcomes for public life. How does big data get used for political purposes? Can the behavioural impact of politically-motivated big data manipulation be measured? How does the structure, function or affordances of computational propaganda vary across platforms, issue areas, or country cases? This Big Data special issue on Computational Propaganda and Political Big Data, scheduled for publication in December 2017, aims to advance our understanding of how the Internet can be used to spread propaganda, engage with citizens, and influence political outcomes. We welcome submissions that utilize big data or engage with methodological, theoretical, practical, and ethical issues associated with politicized use of big data. The special issue seeks to describe and discuss: - the effects of computational propaganda, automated social actors and bots on Internet platforms, Internet users and political processes. - measurement of the distribution and impact of fake news; - linking, sharing, and citation structures across large numbers of voters or supporters; - the political economy of big data mining; - the political inferences that can be made by reverse engineering de-personalized data, analysing relational data, or assembling shadow profiles on people not represented in political data; - the path from exposure to computational propaganda to behavioural change; - the use of the drones, smart city sensor networks, the Internet of Things or proprietary device networks for gathering politically valuable big data. The editors also seek research on the computationally creative ways of mitigating the impact of computational propaganda: alert systems for identifying algorithmically-based political manipulation or high levels of automation over device networks and social media platforms; big data driven systems for source verification or fact checking that might raise trust in computing; ways of detecting the origins of manipulative content on massive social network platforms. The deadline for manuscript submission is June 1, 2017. We welcome manuscripts from scholars across the social and computer sciences, and are particularly interested in research from teams of authors from both domains of inquiry. Please submit your papers online to our web-based manuscript submission and peer-review at www.liebertpub.com/manuscript/big<http://www.liebertpub.com/manuscript/big>.

Mapping Multilingualism and Digital Culture (workshop), June 22nd
by Spence, Paul 17 May '17

17 May '17

Dear Colleagues We're organising a workshop at King's College London next month to explore interactions between Modern Languages research and digital culture, as part of the 'Language Acts & Worldmaking' project, funded by the AHRC as part of the OWRI initiative. Registration is free, and we hope some of you can join us - please find further information below: ------------------------------- Mapping Multilingualism and Digital Culture (workshop) King's College London 22 June 2017, 10 am to 5.30 pm Modern Languages research increasingly happens in a context which is influenced by digital culture, and although this is often forgotten or ignored, global digital culture is profoundly multilingual. But what do we really understand about interactions (and tensions) between the two? How is Modern Languages research transformed by digital culture, and how can a multilingual perspective help us to engage with the 'Digital' more effectively? This workshop aims to critically examine the current state of Modern Languages research which is somehow digitally mediated - whether that be in its creation (editing), methods (virtual ethnography; social and cultural analytics; distant reading), transmission (as code), dissemination (digital publishing; visualisation), object of study (as 'data'), infrastructure (digital archives; ecosystems), mobility/mutability or its social dimension (crowdsourcing; social media). It explores how the study of other cultures, their languages, literature, art and history are altered as a result, and what this means for researching (and learning) Modern Languages. The workshop will bring together a range of academics, digital practitioners and cultural sector respondents in order to study the challenges and opportunities in merging digital and non-digital methods into an approach which integrates critical thinking, humanities-based interpretative skills, creativity and digitally mediated knowledge production. The workshop sets out to explore the following questions: * How does digital culture alter the way that Modern Languages research is carried out? * How have research questions relating to Modern Languages been articulated (and answered) using digital technology? * How have scholars and practitioners studying 'the digital' approached and interpreted Modern Languages research? What tools and methodologies have they employed, and what opportunities are there for broader application? * To what extent have networked communication, open culture, collective intelligence and participatory architectures influenced the execution and transmission of Modern Languages research and what are the opportunities/barriers? * What new research methods or research objects are created as a result? And what implications does this have for teaching/learning? The workshop will start with a keynote speech from Professor Claire Taylor (University of Liverpool), and includes panel discussions, group activities and presentations on a number of topics from digital researchers & practitioners with an interest in Modern Languages. This is the first in a series of events organised by the 'Digital Mediations' strand on the Language Acts project http://languageacts.org/ and funded by the AHRC as part of its OWRI initiative. The strand surveys digital data, tools and methodologies commonly used in Modern Languages research (with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on Spanish and Portuguese-language research) and explores the potential and limitations of digital culture in a language-based research ecosystem. There will also be opportunities to engage (digitally) with the questions raised by the workshop before, during, and after the event: we will be opening up debate online and asking people to nominate their favourite digital tools, projects and publications involving Modern Languages research. Some of the contributions to the workshop will be published online afterwards. Attendance is free, but places at this event at King's College London are limited so please register at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mapping-multilingualism-and-digital-culture-… For more information please see the workshop web page at: https://languageacts.org/events/mapping-multilingualism-and-digital-culture/ You can follow us on Twitter at @languageacts and the #languageacts hashtag Paul Spence and Renata Brandão -- Best wishes Paul Spence Senior Lecturer Department Education Lead / Programme Convenor MA in Digital Humanities Department of Digital Humanities King's College London 26-29 Drury Lane London WC2B 5RL paul.spence(a)kcl.ac.uk<mailto:paul.spence@kcl.ac.uk> http://www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/depts/ddh/research/index.aspx http://www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/depts/ddh/study/pgt/madh/index.aspx Twitter: @dhpaulspence (English)/@hdpaulspence (castellano)
