Hi I´m working on this topic. So I have published some articles talking about the promotion of media content on social media. I can share these articles with you but you should know that I wrote them in french. What do you think? (2011). Transmedia Television: Audiences, New Media, and Daily Life: Taylor & Francis is a good starting point. New book: Feminist Activism and Digital Networks
by Aristea Fotopoulou 15 May '17

15 May '17

Dear AoIR Colleagues, I hope some of you will find my new book of relevance and interest. "Feminist Activism and Digital Networks: Between Empowerment and Vulnerability” By Aristea Fotopoulou Palgrave Macmillan This book sheds new light on the way that, in the last decade, digital technologies have become inextricably linked to culture, economy and politics and how they have transformed feminist and queer activism. This exciting text critically analyses the contradictions, tensions and often-paradoxical aspects that characterize such politics, both in relation to identity and to activist practice. Aristea Fotopoulou examines how activists make claims about rights online, and how they negotiate access, connectivity, openness and visibility in digital networks. Through a triple focus on embodied media practices, labour and imaginaries, and across the themes of bodily autonomy, pornography, reproduction, and queer social life, she advocates a move away from understandings of digital media technologies as intrinsically exploitative or empowering. By reinstating the media as constant material agents in the process of politicization, Fotopoulou creates a powerful text that appeals to students and scholars of digital media, gender and sexuality, and readers interested in the role of media technologies in activism. Table of Contents 1) Introduction: Conceptualising Feminist Activism and Digital Networks 2) Women’s Organisations and the Social Imaginary of Networked Feminism: Digital and Networked by Default? 3) The Paradox of Feminism, Technology and Pornography: Value and Biopolitics in Digital Culture 4) From Egg Donation to Fertility Apps: Feminist Knowledge Production and Reproductive Rights 5) Space, Locality and Connectivity: The End of Identity Politics as We Know It? 6) Epilogue: Looping Feminist Threads Endorsements "How are new forms of political subject and political practice possible? The focus of cultural studies for decades, this question acquires new urgency in the digital era with its radically new possibilities for acting together and in view of each other. Aristea Fotopoulou¹s exciting book explores, across diverse and imaginatively selected case studies, the potential for feminist and queer activists to establish new ground and, in the process, change our vision of what politics might be. Highly recommended.” (Nick Couldry, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK And author of "Why Voice Matters: Culture and Politics after Neoliberalism”) "What do feminism and queer activism mean in an era when digital technologies are so intimately entangled with cultural, economic and political life? In Feminist Activism and Digital Networks, Aristea Fotopoulou gives us an original take on this question, steering a careful course between celebration and despair, and offering nuanced discussions of contemporary digital biopolitics from alt porn to fertility apps to anarcho-queer placed-based interventions.” (Rosalind Gill, City, University of London, UK) “Feminist Activism and Digital Networks is an urgently needed antidote to what Dr. Fotopoulou refers to as the invisibility of gender and sexuality as embodied practices in communication studies and social movement studies alike. Focusing on the lively and important forms of feminism occurring in digital networked cultures as spaces of tension and contradiction, possibilities and foreclosures, Dr. Fotopoulou brilliantly helps us understand the complex nature of activism and connectivity in contemporary feminist theory and activism. This book should be required reading for social justice classrooms.” (Carol Stabile, University of Oregon, USA, Managing Editor, Fembot Collective, Co-editor Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology) About the Author Dr Aristea Fotopoulou is Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications, School of Media, University of Brighton, UK. She researches critical aspects of digital culture, emerging technologies and social change. Currently she writes about cultures, practices and subjectivities that relate to self-tracking and big data, from a feminist perspective. Free registration now open Different Bodies: (Self-)Representation, Disability and the Media
by Jacob Johanssen 15 May '17

15 May '17

Dear colleagues, those of you who may be in London this June might be interested in the following conference. *Different Bodies: (Self-)Representation, Disability and the Media* *Friday, June 23, 2017, University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London* Register for free: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/different-bodies-self-representation-disabilit… <https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.com%2Fe%2Fdiffere…> Programme available here: https://sites.google.com/view/mediadisfigurement/conference This one-day conference seeks to explore representations of the body as strange, shameful, wrong, impaired, wounded, scarred, disabled, lacking, different or ‘other’ in contemporary media. The advent of digital media has underlined the importance of visual culture and our curiosity in representations of the body to form opinions about ourselves and others. Media portrayals of bodies can affect our lives because media are one of the primary agents of socialization. Bodies we see in newspapers, on television and in our social media feeds are often made to appear perfect in order to conform to racialized and heteronormative ideals of what it means to be beautiful and normal in contemporary capitalist societies. This conference seeks to contribute to current debates in theoretical fields such as feminism, queer theory, disability studies, critical theory and postcolonial studies over presentations of the body that are white, young, slim and productive. *Keynote*: Professor Lisa Blackman (Goldsmiths) The conference will also feature a special panel by *Changing Faces* This conference is part of the research project ‘Facial Disfigurement in the UK Media: From Print to Online’, led by Dr Diana Garrisi (University of Westminster) and Dr Jacob Johanssen (University of Westminster). Conference attendance is free. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please let the organisers know if you have any access or dietary requirements.

Deadline for CFP this week. Digital Culture meets Data: Critical approaches
by Ryan Burns 15 May '17

15 May '17

Call for Papers Digital Culture meets Data: Critical approaches ECREA Digital Culture and Communication Section Conference. 6th -7th November 2017, University of Brighton, UK Abstract deadline: 20 May 2017 Keynote speakers: · Rob Kitchin, Maynooth University, Republic of Ireland · Helen Thornham, University of Leeds, UK Conference theme: Algorithms and big data are today shaping our sociocultural and technical relations and our everyday experiences. Digital culture and communication are inevitably changing as media infrastructures, media practices and social environments become increasingly 'datafied'. We may think of surveillance, algorithmic profiling and self-tracking for example. Wearable technologies such as fitness trackers allow people to understand the body as a data-producing object. Our use of commonplace media technologies is mediated by data in ways that we do not ask for, nor even necessarily know about or consent to. Data interpellate us. Yet data are obscure and enigmatic. But what does this turn to data mean for our research, scholarship and pedagogic practice? Has the data paradigm arrived as an unquestionable unifying concept for studies of digital culture and digital media, communication, technology? It may be that a shift of focus on algorithms and data is fundamentally disruptive to the ways in which we see our research and disciplines. It may even appear to limit the theoretical and methodological tools through which we increasingly try to understand mediation, the formation of identity, social life, politics and the creative industries. To others, the 'datalogical turn' may be plainly repeating the processes of earlier instances of technological innovation. And for some, it may provide an opportunity to frame new theoretical concepts and methodological tools for a whole new set of social, cultural and political phenomena. The ECREA DCC Conference "Digital Culture meets data: Critical approaches" asks the question: what theoretical and empirical perspectives on data and the digital can be used to augment and diversify our research and educational approaches? And how might we challenge data paradigms or aim to show alternative or complementary ways to address digital culture and communication? We invite empirical and theoretical research papers and panels that address themes such as: - Media studies and datafication - Researching media and culture using data methods - Data visualisation, art and design - Data and the role of the imaginary, fantasy and myth - Data cultures and neoliberalism - Data activism and citizen engagement - Data and critical literacy - Data and gender, race, class inequalities - Datafication and the creative industries - Feminist approaches to data - Machine learning and AI - Mobile and locative media - Quantified self and data cultures - Smart cities, data and sustainability - Social bots and the management of sociality The Conference will also host a YECREA Workshop entitled: 'The ambitious early-career scholar in an age of precarity: questions, challenges, opportunities' (Chaired by Ysabel Gerrard, University of Leeds). This workshop will facilitate open discussion between academics at various stages in their careers about some of the issues confronting ambitious early-career scholars in an increasingly competitive international job market. Submission details, individual papers: Please submit abstracts of 250-350 words, written in English. Abstracts should contain a clear outline of the argument, the theoretical framework, methodology and results (if applicable), and how this links to the theme and topics of this conference, or to the general concerns of digital culture and communication. Please include 3-5 keywords that describe your work, and a Bio note (max 100 words, stating affiliation). Submission details, panels: We welcome panel submissions, numbering 4 speakers. Please submit abstracts of 250-350 words per paper, plus a 250-350 word rationale for the panel. Individual abstracts should contain a clear outline of the argument, the theoretical framework, methodology and results (if applicable), and how this links to the theme and topics of this conference, or to the general concerns of digital culture and communication. Please include 3-5 keywords that describe each individual abstracts, plus 3-5 keywords that describe the panel, and Bio note for each individual abstract (max 100 words, stating affiliation).
