CfP Special Issue: The Platformization of Chinese Society
by Thomas Poell 19 May '17

19 May '17

Special Issue of Chinese Journal of Communication: The Platformization of Chinese Society Extended Abstract Submission Deadline: July 1, 2017 Full Paper Submission deadline: February 28, 2018 Guest Editors: Jeroen de Kloet, Thomas Poell, Zeng Guohua Full text: http://jeroendekloet.nl/the-platformization-of-chinese-society/ We are currently witnessing a fast process of platformization of Chinese society. Social media, as well as platforms for collaborative consumption, are emerging as new power players that challenge older institutions and disrupt economic sectors like news, hospitality, and transport. Yet, in the light of omnipresent government regulation and intervention, platformization presents us with a very different set of problems and questions than in the West. In the same way, we need to critically interrogate the seemingly ‘natural’ connection between online platforms and ‘global capitalism’, which has been theorized through the notion of ‘platform capitalism’ (Smicek, 2016). Again China presents an odd case, as it is hard to read China as a capitalist society (Nonini, 2008). Against this background, the aim of this special issue is to critically engage with the platformization of China, using China as a method (cf. Chen, 2010) to interrogate, complicate, and complement current research on the global rise of the platform society (van Dijck & Poell 2015). We thus ask in this special issue: what does the platform society mean for China, but also, what does China mean for our thinking about the platform society? This special issue aims to empirically scrutinize different platforms that are currently popular in China. The Chinese process of platformization appears to differ on at least three crucial dimensions with developments in the US and Europe. First, there are vital differences in the political economy of platforms: the ownership structure and business models of Chinese platforms are different from those in the US. This also has implications for the ownership of data, raising issues of surveillance, control and marketing of data (Couldry & Hepp, 2017; Dyer-Witheford, 2014). Second, vital differences need to be taken into account in terms of the architectures and affordances of platforms: user and programming interfaces (and its semiotics), algorithms (what is made visible and invisible), and infrastructures (how are third parties plugged into the platform ecosystem) (Hookway, 2014; McVeigh-Schultz & Baym, 2015; Plantin et al., 2016). Finally, Chinese online platforms appear to be characterized by particular types of user practices and cultures, which differ from those in other parts of the worlds (Poell, de Kloet & Zeng 2014; Qiu, 2016). Given that the societal impact of new technologies is for an important part shaped by how these technologies are integrated in social practice, these differences greatly matter. The contributions we solicit for this special issue will each focus on one specific type of platform, following a typology based on a preliminary inventory (see below). We envision contributions that analyze a particular platform and its role in societal relations through the three dimensions sketched above. These contributions are expected to build on the fields of media and cultural studies, software studies and/or platform studies, in their investigation of one of the following types of platforms: 1. Public social media (e.g. weibo and douban) 2. Private social media (e.g. weixin). 3. News and search platforms (e.g. baidu) 4. E-commerce services (e.g. taobao) 5. Media sharing platforms (e.g. youku and tudou) 6. Transport platforms (e.g. taxi didi and mobike) 7. Food services (e.g. meituan and eleme) 8. Dating platforms (e.g. tamtam and blue’d) Evidently, we will welcome strong paper proposals, focused other types of platforms as well. Timeline 1200-word extended abstracts should be submitted by mail to Jeroen de Kloet (b.j.dekloet(a)uva.nl) and Thomas Poell (Poell(a)uva.nl) by July 1, 2017. The abstract should articulate: 1) the issue or research question to be discussed, 2) the methodological or critical framework used, and 3) indicate the expected findings or conclusions. Decisions will be communicated to the authors by July 15, 2017. Full papers of the selected abstracts should be submitted by February 28, 2018. All submitted manuscripts will be subject to a rigorous blind peer-review process. All accepted manuscripts will be published online first. The planned printed publication date is an issue of CJC in 2019. Submissions should conform to the editorial guidelines of the Chinese Journal of Communication found at http://www.informaworld.com/cjoc under “Instructions for Authors.”

WEBCAST TODAY: Global Internet Governance – Successes and Challenges for ICANN and beyond
by Joly MacFie 18 May '17

At the DLD Conference <http://www.dld-conference.com/DLDnyc17> in NYC last week *Elliot Noss*, President and CEO of Tucows, addressed the assembled throng of developers, designers and entrepreneurs. He bade them, if they wanted to see some true innovation, to take a closer look at ICANN, He noted that ICANN's global organic governance model - one that transcends nations, borders, and governments - is unprecedented in the annals of human history, and suggested it should be recognized, cherished, and supported. In reality there are those of us deeply embedded in the processes who kind of take it for granted, and others to whom, if they have heard of it at all, it is an enigma. Hopefully today's event will be contribute, in a small way, to bridging that gap, while bringing its activities into perspective. joly posted: "Today, Thursday May 18 2017 the Internet Society New York Chapter will host a lunchtime session - Global Internet Governance – Successes and Challenges for ICANN and beyond. CfP: International ZeMKI conference "The Mediatization of Time: New perspectives on media, data and temporality"
by Leif Kramp 18 May '17

18 May '17

*** sorry for cross-posting *** CALL FOR PAPERS International ZeMKI conference "The Mediatization of Time: New perspectives on media, data and temporality" 7-8 December 2017 ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research University of Bremen, Germany Recent innovations in the digitalization and datafication of communication fundamentally affect how people conceptualize, perceive and evaluate time to create the kind of world they live in. The conference invites participants to think through the interplay of media and data in respect of the way social time is constructed, modulated, and experienced. This allows to appreciate how new technologies and representations deeply affect the temporal organization of today’s media suffused societies, and it also sheds light on transformations in mediating time. We assume that mediatization as a fundamental societal change that interweaves with the development and spread of communication and information technologies leaves its mark on the ways we process and order the pace, sequence, rhythms and of social reality. This conference invites to think through the role of media and data people have or had at hand to time their interactions, relations, and states of being. It encourages submissions related to the mediation of time and the timing of media(ization), and includes, but is not restricted to, the following themes: - Transformativity of mediatization processes: How can we grasp the historically changing mediation of time and the relation to diachronic processes of mediatization? What are the dynamics between the transforming construction of time and the ongoing formation of mediatization? - Temporality and mediation of time: Are there temporal affordances of media and how do they influence the experience of mediated time? What time principles characterize today’s media-saturated life? How do media technologies relate to the various temporalities of media practices? - Memory and the rearrangement of the tenses: What temporal meanings are generated by the media? How are media used in order to knit together past, present and future? Please send a 300-word abstract, along with your name, e-mail address, academic affiliation, and short bio to: mediatizedtime(a)uni-bremen.de Abstract submission deadline: September 1, 2017 Acknowledgment of acceptance: September 15, 2017 Conference dates: December 7-8, 2017 Confirmed speakers include: Staffan Ericson (Södertörn University): Mediatization in Time; Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen): Datafication and Temporal Media Practices; Johan Fornäs (Södertörn University): Media as Third-Time Tools; Helge Jordheim (University of Oslo): Modes of Synchronization; Emily Keightley (Loughborough University): Zones of Intermediacy; Irene Neverla (University of Hamburg): Media/Time Rhythms; Elizabeth Prommer (University of Rostock): Work, Time, Media; Espen Ytreberg (University of Oslo): Networked Simultaneities. The conference is organized by Christian Pentzold and Christine Lohmeier from the ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research, University of Bremen in cooperation with Anne Kaun, School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University, Stockholm. Can Nvivo be used to removed PHI from free text?
by Orlowski, Simone K. 18 May '17

18 May '17

Hi all, Our team is conducting a retrospective study involving electronic medical records (EMR) data and we are trying to identify tools that can help us automate the removal of PHI from unstructured text data. By “unstructured data” we mean free narrative text containing many possible points of interest, as opposed to structured variable tables with rows and columns. The note text is itself in a structured table, however, with the following columns: patient ID, date, note subject, note text. These notes contain medical information about patients: nurses’ notes, physician notes, discharge summaries, specialty reports, etc. We need to de-identify our data using the “Safe harbor” method: removal of 18 identifiers recommended by HIPAA, including names, dates, contact information, ages >89, ID numbers, etc. of patients or relatives, employers, or household members of patients, as well as device identifiers, serial numbers, and policy numbers. We are wondering if Nvivo is capable of locating these particular types of data within text, and either remove or replace the found data. We then would like to export the de-identified data in its table format (i.e. columns: patient ID, date, notes subject, [now de-identified] note text. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance. Simone Simone K.
