Hi everyone, Just sending along a note concerning this Call for Papers for the 7th USENIX Workshop on Free and Open Communications on the Internet (FOCI ’17), which will take place this summer in Vancouver, B.C., on August 14th The CFP is here: https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/foci17_preliminary_cfp_042017.pdf FOCI is an interdisciplinary workshop co-located with the USENIX Security Symposium that seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields focused on censorship, surveillance, and other practices that inhibit free and open communications on the internet. This year I am co-chairing FOCI with Nick Weaver (of Berkeley, ICSI, and Lawfare fame), so let me know if you have any questions. Among those on the interdisciplinary Program Committee are folks like Roger Dingledine (The Tor Project), Kurt Opsahl (EFF), Lex Gill (Citizen Lab), Molly Sauter (McGill), and Nick Feamster (Princeton CITP). One of the changes we made this year to encourage a broader range of submissions is creating a "two track" submissions stream, one for traditional FOCI technical papers and another for "law/social science" papers drawing on law, policy, or social science, with more flexible formatting and page limits. Policy-makers in all domains are facing increasing pressures to interact with citizens more efficiently, and make better decisions in the light of data flooding in all forms, sophisticated computing technologies, and analytics methods. The hierarchical structures of governments are also being challenged as these technologies equip individuals and informal networks with the necessary tools to better participate in public decision making processes, and have a societal impact at a much faster pace than ever before. The concepts and tools from artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and now blockchain technologies are also likely to automate many services in the public sector, greatly increasing its efficiency but at the cost of potentially millions of jobs. ‘Smartification’ of people, devices, institutions, cities, and governments also brings constant, ubiquitous surveillance which, together with inference and recognition technologies, creates the potential to regulate human behaviour and may even threaten democracy. The third of the *Data for Policy* conference series highlights *‘Government by Algorithm?’ *as its main theme, while also welcoming contributions from the broader Data Science and Policy discussions. Please share with anyone you know who might be interested. *First one:* The *ECSEPA project* is a two year research project that seeks to address the ‘human dimension’ of cyber security through a unique lens – that of the challenges that UK cyber security policy makers face in evaluating evidence of cyber incidents in both short term responses and long term, strategic planning. Thanks Massimo *Call for papers* *Mapping New Perspectives and Debates on Digital Divide in Africa* *IAMCR pre-conference* Social media platforms are being considered new podiums for political transformation as political dictatorships supposedly convert to overnight democracies as more and more people are not only able to gain access to information but also gather and disseminate news from a perspective of their own. When looking at the situation in several sub-Saharan African countries, it becomes clear there are several challenges standing in the way of social media and its palpable yet considerably constrained ability to influence political and social changes. Access to the Internet or lack of it thereof, is a recognized social stratification causing “digital divide” thanks to existing inequalities within African and several other societies throughout the world. Despite issues associated with the digital divide, mobile telephony is growing on the continent and the rise of smartphones has given citizens easy access to social networking sites. But the digital divide, which mostly reflects on one’s race, gender, socioeconomic status or geographical location, stands in the way of digital progress. What opportunities are available to tame digital disparities? How are different societies in Africa handling digital problems? What innovative methods are being used to provide citizens with access to critical information that can help improve their lives? This call will be seeking original contributions focusing on experiences from various locations in several sub-Saharan African countries with the aim of providing an updated, critical account on the digital divide and its impact in Africa. Dear Colleagues: Deadline Reminder: 20 May 2017- Doctoral Colloquium at the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Annual Conference 2017, Tartu, Estonia The Association of Internet Researchers believes that its emerging researchers are the best in its disparate constituent fields. In keeping with its commitment to students’ scholarship, we continue the tradition of bringing emerging and established scholars together through the #AoIR2017 Doctoral Colloquium. The colloquium offers PhD students working in internet research or related fields a special, day-long forum, to be convened on 18 October 2017. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to spend a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. This year, Ben Light and Susana Paasonen will coordinate the Doctoral Colloquium. We already have a great line up of mentors including: Andrew Herman (Wilfrid Laurier University – Canada), Sian Lincoln (Liverpool John Moores University – UK), Brady Robards (Monash University – Australia), Jennifer Stromer-Galley (Syracuse University – USA), Jenny Sundén (Södertörn University – Sweden) with more to be added. Thank you *** Post-Graduate Conference Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspective Monday 3rd July 2017, Cardiff We look forward to welcoming you to our first Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Conference! “Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspectives” postgraduate conference will be organised by PhD students from the schools of Social Science, Computer Science, Law and Politics in Cardiff University, supported by the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). It will bring together PhD students and academics from different disciplines interested in studying the implications of the digital on society. The principal aim of “Digital Communities” is to encourage doctoral researchers to consider how the concept of digital communities is applied inside and outside of their own subject areas. Overview How are digital technologies impacting upon, and affecting the lives and relationships of people and things? How are communities developed and maintained in these contexts? How are they, and how could they be, governed and threatened? How can they be researched? Through this conference we will provide a space for discussion around emerging and pertinent issues faced by people and communities in their interactions with the digital, as well as the opportunities and barriers that face researchers studying the digital. Students at all levels of postgraduate study, as well as early career researchers, are invited to give presentations on their own research (ongoing or completed) as well as various aspects of their study and experience, including but not limited to: complete and preliminary findings, insights and observations, theoretical/methodological/ethical issues and approaches, problems and challenges, personal/professional interests and experiences related to the digital, and so on. Given this open and inclusive scope, we especially welcome contributions that have relevance across different academic and professional disciplines. Keynote Speakers Presentation groups will be bookended by two academic keynote speakers: Dr Athina Karatzogianni, Associate Professor in Media and Communication at the University of Leicester: “The Problem of Trading Discursive for Affective Power in Digital Political Communities”. Dr Suzy Moat, Associate Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, co-director of Data Science Lab: “Sensing human behaviour with online data”. Call for Abstracts Presentations will be 15-20 minutes, organised into three topical blocks, with Q&A sessions at the end of each block, and extensive networking and discussion opportunities later in the day. We encourage a wide range of submissions involving, but not limited to, the following thematic topics: Identity, subjectivity and digital communities: What kind of human subject is enabled by the digital? How does this affect people’s lives within and outside of their digital communities? How are interactions and expressions mediated by the digital? How are forms of activity and organisation privileged and stifled? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: “old and new” communities, community development and digital technologies, urban and rural communities, migrants, refugees, LGBTQ, activism and social movements on social media, influence on media and policies). Threats, antagonism and digital communities: How is problematic activity and speech (un)regulated? What old and new antagonisms propagate online? How are technologies used to disrupt, manipulate and antagonise digital communities and individuals? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: developing and supporting digital communities, cyberconflict and digital communities, technological threats, such as phishing/scam/privacy related issues, problems of governance and regulation of online spaces and communities). Study of digital communities: What is the ontological and epistemological status of the digital? To what extent are digital communities “new” or novel? What are the opportunities and affordances of different methods of research into the digital? What is digital data? How do the actions and structure of digital platforms and their operators constrain and influence methodological development? How can digital research draw from micro and macro approaches to research? What are the ethical challenges involved in the study of the digital? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: methodological and ethical considerations in the study of digital communities, different types of research: participatory approaches, community-centred design, case studies of communities, computational social science (e.g. digital communication dynamics, text analysis and natural language processing of social phenomena, network analysis of social systems, large-scale social experiments and/or phenomena, causal inference and computational methods for social science, novel digital data and/or computational analyses for addressing societal challenges, methods and analyses of biased, selective, or incomplete observational social data, social news curation and collaborative filtering, methods and analyses for social information). Abstracts should be 300 words, indicating name, institutional affiliation and title of presentation. Reminder of call for abstracts: Our data futures workshop (Tallinn 30.8.2017)

A reminder of this workshop. One week left before the DL for short abstracts! OUR DATA FUTURES Datafication, referring to the conversion of life into digital data, generates new societal opportunities alongside power asymmetries. Initiatives, such as MyData, Open mHealth, MIDATA.coop, Hub of All Things, and Open Humans take datafication as a starting point, but try to steer data flows and data practices in a societally more sustainable direction. These initiatives address asymmetries in terms of data usage and distribution, or inadequacies of existing ethical and regulatory frameworks; they push for the rearticulation of concepts such as participation, sharing, governance, or public good. This workshop of the MyData 2017 conference invites scholars, participating in and studying such data-driven initiatives, to discuss how the capacities of data technology might be harnessed to promote social justice, new forms of agency, political participation, and collective action. We are also interested in research on data activism and how uses of data challenge accepted norms, assumptions and ideological projects. The aim is to promote debate on the ways forms of data are thought to guide, or shape us as we move into data futures, and whether the data initiatives succeed in promoting new communities of producers and users of data.
