Journal of Peer Production #10: Peer production and work
by george dafermos 07 Jun '17

07 Jun '17

[Apologies for multiple posts] We are delighted to announce the release of Journal of Peer Production #10: "Peer production and work" http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-10-peer-production-and-work/ Issue editors: Mathieu O’Neil (University of Canberra) and Stefano Zacchiroli (University Paris Diderot and Inria) The increasing production of value by entities which are not compensated for their labour means the ranks of unemployed people keep growing. We often confuse being ‘unemployed’ with being ‘unworked’, but what it really means is that we are ‘unwaged’. There is a lot of work to be done, but for that to happen it needs to be separated from employment. Where does peer production fit in? The passionate labour and abjuration of exclusive property rights over the goods they produce of participants in peer projects occur at the expense of less fortunate others, who do not have the disposable income, cultural capital, or family support to engage in unpaid labour. On the other hand, we should avoid an overly ‘capitalocentric’ view of the economy. New forms of solidarity can be imagined. An increasingly large free public goods and services sector could well cohabit in a plural economy with employment in cooperatives, paid independent work, and the wage-earning of the commercial sector. The peer-reviewed articles in this tenth issue of the Journal of Peer Production explore such emerging assemblages through case studies of an online encyclopedia, a herbarium, a scientific project, mathematical schoolbooks, and ‘maker’ activities. The Editorial Section addresses the interplay of capital and commons in firms and peer projects. It argues that it is time for the Journal of Peer Production to move beyond an exclusive focus on DIY institutions, in order to research and develop the culture and regulations and which can grow the commons. This fellowship is a full-time, two-year faculty position beginning in the fall of 2017. The position primarily involves sustained research and writing on the social, economic, and legal implications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The position will also involve teaching and assisting with PULSE projects, such as conferences and workshops. The fellow will evaluate methods for assessment and prediction, as well as legal, economic, institutional, regulatory, and other forms of preparation and response. The fellow’s research will culminate in the authorship of papers suitable for publication in law journals or other respected legal, scholarly, and policy outlets. Throughout, the fellow will work in collaboration with Professor of Law Edward A. Parson and PULSE Co-Director Richard M. Re, among other UCLA faculty. PULSE explores the complex connections between law, evidence, science, and technology. PULSE engages in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research and programming to examine how basic “facts” about our world, provided through science and credited as evidence, influence venues of law and policy making. PULSE is co-directed by UCLA School of Law Dean Jennifer L. Mnookin and Assistant Professor of Law Richard M. Re. Candidates for the PULSE fellowship should possess a J.D. or other advanced degree, a strong academic record, excellent analytical and writing skills, and demonstrated interest or background in the fields of law and science, artificial intelligence, or social risk assessment. New Book: The Citizen Marketer
by Joel Penney 07 Jun '17

07 Jun '17

Dear AoIR colleagues, I’d like to let you know about my new book that’s out this week from the Oxford Studies in Digital Politics series, edited by Andrew Chadwick. I hope some of you will find it interesting and relevant to your work. “The Citizen Marketer: Promoting Political Opinion in the Social Media Age” Joel Penney Oxford University Press Description >From hashtag activism to the flood of political memes, grassroots circulation of opinion online is changing the landscape of political communication. By exploring how everyday people promote messages to persuade their peers and shape the public mind, Joel Penney offers a new framework for understanding the phenomenon of viral political communication: the citizen marketer. The discussion is grounded in testimony of citizens who have changed their profile pictures to protest symbols, tweeted links to articles about select issues, or displayed anything from slogan T-shirts to viral videos that promote favored politicians. In contrast to the “slacktivism” critique often leveled at these media-centered forms of activism, Penney argues that they enable citizens to take on the role of viral political marketers as they participate in the networked spread of ideas. Furthermore, Penney examines the risks that these practices pose for increasing polarization and partisanship, the trivialization of issues, and manipulation by political elites. Like the citizen consumer, the citizen marketer is guided by the logics of marketing practice, but, rather than being passive, actively circulates persuasive media to advance political interests. Citizens view their participation in such activities not only in terms of how it may shape or influence outcomes, but as a statement of their own identity. As the book argues, these practices signal an important shift in how political participation is conceptualized and performed in advanced capitalist democratic societies, as they casually inject political ideas into the everyday spaces and places of popular culture. While marketing is considered a dirty word in certain critical circles -- particularly among segments of the left that have identified neoliberal market logics and consumer capitalist structures as a major focus of political struggle -- some of these very critics have determined that the most effective way to push back against the forces of neoliberal capitalism is to co-opt its own marketing and advertising techniques to spread counter-hegemonic ideas to the public. Accordingly, this book argues that the citizen marketer approach to political action is much broader than any one ideological constituency or bloc. Rather, it is a means of promoting a wide range of political ideas, including those that are broadly critical of elite uses of marketing in consumer capitalist societies. The book includes an extensive historical treatment of citizen-level political promotion in modern democratic societies, connecting contemporary digital practices to both the 19th century tradition of mass political spectacle as well as more informal, culturally-situated forms of political expression that emerge from postwar countercultures. Table of Contents Chapter 1: The Citizen Marketer Approach to Political Action Chapter 2: The Historical Lineage of the Citizen Marketer Chapter 3: Self-Labeled and Visible Identities Chapter 4: Political Fans and Cheerleaders Chapter 5: News Spreaders and Agenda-Setters Chapter 6: Towards a Critical Literacy of the Citizen Marketer Approach “This is a must-read book for anyone looking to understand the ways that citizens are taking up the marketing of political candidates and causes in the social media era.” - Daniel Kreiss, Author of *Prototype Politics: Technology-Intensive Campaigning and the Data of Democracy * “*The Citizen Marketer* helps us dig into real campaigns and real campaigners whose work sometimes proceeds in the spirit of democracy, and sometimes degrades democracy. Understanding modern political communication means getting to know the varied forms of computational propaganda that we all produce and consume.” - Philip Howard, Author of *Pax Technica: How the Internet of Things May Set Us Free or Lock Us Up* “Joel Penney provides a compelling, nuanced, and rich exploration of how marketing logic and civic self-expression are morphing and combining in the digital age. It is an essential book for all interested in politics, marketing, and public life.” -David Karpf, Author of *The MoveOn Effect and Analytic Activism* About the Author Joel Penney is an Associate Professor at the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. He received his PhD in 2011 from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. www.citizenmarketer.org

** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Workshop on Health Recommender Systems, to be held in Como (Italy) co-located with ACM RECSYS 2017 (https://recsys.acm.org/) Website: http://healthrecsys.ur.de -------------------------------------------------------------------- Important Dates: ================ ** June, 22nd, 2017 Paper submission deadline ** June, 13th, 2017 Notification to authors ** July, 27th, 2017, Camera-Ready Version ** August, 27th-31st, 2017, HRS Workshop, RecSys conference Workshop Organizers: ==================== David Elsweiler (University of Regensburg, Germany) Santiago Hors-Fraile (University of Seville, Maastricht University) Bernd Ludwig (University of Regensburg, Germany) Alan Said (University of Skoevde, Sweden) Hanna Schaefer (TU Muenchen, Germany) Christoph Trattner (MODUL University Vienna, Austria) Helma Torkamaan (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany) Andre Calero Valdez (RWTH Aachen University, Germany) Objectives & Topics: ==================== Health is at the center of our everyday lives. During the 1st Health Recommender Systems workshop we elaborated a great variety of fields in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behavior regarding our own health. At the same time these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient, need to be either liable or accompanied by domain experts. To make the recommender liable, complex domain specific user models need to be created, which on the other hand creates privacy issues. While trust into a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned by transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. The variety of those challenges also results from the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in health systems. Taking the patient perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prior concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Finally, health care providers, insurance companies, and clinics are interested in success rates, study results, and financial benefits of the new systems. In this workshop, we want to go deeper into the discussions started last year and establish a roadmap of possible research topics in Health Recommender Systems. Our aim is to enhance the results of the first workshop in the following areas: ** Elaborate discussion topics of the first workshop ** Strengthen the community of researchers working on Health in RecSys ** Attract scientists from other domains to RecSys (e.g. health, psychology, ...) ** Find cross-domain collaboration projects and funding targets ** Establish shared infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics, but are not limited to: ** Algorithms for HRS ** Domain Knowledge Representation ** Regulations and Standards ** Behavioral Change ** Medical evaluation techniques ** User Profiling ** Pervasive Systems ** Personalization ** Persuasion ** Social Motivation ** Gamification ** Empowerment ** Trust ** Explanations ** Nudging ** Patient Needs/Satisfaction ** User Interaction Design ** Expert-in-the-Loop ** Privacy ** Ethics The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss research and projects that reach beyond classic recommender techniques and discuss health domain related challenges of recommender systems. Submissions: ============ We solicit short research papers (4 pages) and short position papers (2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. Participants can decide between a research focused submission, resulting in a workshop presentation, and a project focused submission, resulting in a workshop poster. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair to the submission page. ** Submission category research: innovative research ideas, preliminary results or system prototypes ** Submission category project: funded research projects, industry and research collaborations or health-care and research collaborations Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must: ** Be written in English; ** Contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; ** Be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Template with a font size no smaller than 9pt; ** Be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; Link or demo in attachment are preferred in both cases. All papers will be peer-reviewed, must not be under review in any other conference, workshop or journal (at the time of submission), and must contain novel contributions. Accepted papers will be published according to the ACM RECSYS 2017 WS publication rules. Please use the workshop's EasyChair submission page for submitting your paper.
