New book: Wikipedia, Work and Capitalism
by Arwid Lund 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

Hi! This could be of interest to some of you. My book Wikipedia, Work and Capitalism (Palgrave Macmillan) has finally been published online (the hardcover will be out within weeks). It situates Wikipedia and peer production within a Marxist perspective on cognitive capitalism, and uses ideology analysis to study the Wikipedians' perceptions of their own activities as well as their understanding of the project's relation to capitalism. If it sounds interesting you can have a look here: http://www.springer.com/gb/book/9783319506890?wt_mc=ThirdParty.SpringerLink… All the best, Arwid Lund Arwid Lund PhD in Information Studies Department of ALM, Uppsala University Email: arwid.lund(a)abm.uu.se

2017 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture Features Larry Smarr
by Sarina Chen 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

The 2017 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture will feature Larry Smarr, Director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), at UC San Diego. Smarr, a physicist and leader in scientific computing, supercomputer applications, and Internet infrastructure, will address, “Building the Pacific Research Platform: Supernetworks for Big Data Science.” Smarr’s lecture will be presented during the 2017 annul conference of International Communication Association (ICA), on Friday, May 26, 11:00 – 12:15 pm in Hilton San Diego Bayfront, 3, Aqua 313. In the lecture, Smarr will discuss the exponential rise of Big Data which is demanding new technological solutions in visualization, machine learning, and high performance cyberinfrastructure. Smarr believes that the rise of artificial intelligence will both be powered by these developments and be essential for deriving understanding from the tsunami of data. Smarr will illustrate how NSF-funded Pacific Research Platform, which provides an Internet platform with 100-1000 times the bandwidth of today's commodity Internet to all the research universities on the West Coast, is being designed from the application needs of researchers from particle physics to climate to human health. Even fields like archaeology, digital libraries, and social media analysis are engaged. Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (CCCSIR, www.cccsir.com) established Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture Series in 2003 to bring leading Internet researchers to annual ICA conventions to promote the development and interest of Internet research. With the interdisciplinary nature of Internet research, the lecture series would like to bring researchers from various disciplines as well as industry leaders to establish dialogues with communication researchers about topics and issues of Internet research. The theme of Steve Jones Lecture Series is " The Internet as Culture.” This event is co-sponsored by University of Illinois, Chicago, and the International Communication Association. For more information about this event, please contact Shing-Ling Sarina Chen, sarina.chen(a)uni.edu.

NEW BOOK: Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy?
by Heather Ford 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

Very exciting new book by Stephen Coleman just out. NEW BOOK: Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy? by Stephen Coleman, Professor of Political Communication, University of Leeds - Polity Press; paperback, £9.99 From its inception as a public communication network, the Internet was regarded by many people as a potential means of escaping from the stranglehold of top–down, stage–managed politics. If hundreds of millions of people could be the producers as well as receivers of political messages, could that invigorate democracy? If political elites fail to respond to such energy, where will it leave them? In this short book, internationally renowned scholar of political communication, Stephen Coleman, argues that the best way to strengthen democracy is to re–invent it for the twenty–first century. Governments and global institutions have failed to seize the opportunity to democratise their ways of operating, but online citizens are ahead of them, developing practices that could revolutionise the exercise of political power. "This is a really outstanding book; Coleman’s ideas, as always, are compelling and clear, and presented in a way that grips the reader. This will be the most authoritative and up–to–date text on the topic." Peter Dahlgren, Lund University "Democracy is old and it is about compromise, not about getting one′s way. Technologies are new, and they attain popularity as they promise ultimate, personalized experiences. Rather than being put to use to reinvent democracy, much new technology has been retrofitted to serve dated civic practices. Coleman′s Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy? brilliantly recognizes this and asks why a new democratic future has not been presented for citizens yet. This books helps us imagine what the future might look like if technology were used to turn the flaws of democracy into strengths and produce a democratic system of governance built for the future. It is bold, it is engaging, and it is like nothing you have read before." Zizi Papacharissi, University of Illinois, Chicago "Since the early days of the web Stephen Coleman has been at the forefront of research into Internet and democracy, and has had a steady hand in pinpointing the difference between promotional rhetoric and experiments that yield dividends. His latest edition is no exception." Meet the nominees of the future Executive Committee
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

Discussion has commenced by members of AoIR and the candidates running for all the seats on the Executive Committee that will take over in October of this year. You can read up on the amazing and committed people who heeded the call to serve by logging into members.aoir.org, then going to the Members section to read the nomination statements of the candidates, and you can participate in a discussion with them. If you're not a member but have been part of this list and community, you can go the next step and join (it's not expensive, especially relative to most other academic associations out there) by clicking the Join AoIR button on aoir.org. I am hoping for a spectacular turnout of voters this year as a sign of the commitment and energy we have for this community. Voting begins April 24th, and information will be shared then on the process for voting.
