Two post doc positions at Cardiff Uni
by Madeline Carr 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

Hi Everyone, I've got two positions going on two different, but equally great projects. Please share with anyone you know who might be interested. *First one:* The *ECSEPA project* is a two year research project that seeks to address the ‘human dimension’ of cyber security through a unique lens – that of the challenges that UK cyber security policy makers face in evaluating evidence of cyber incidents in both short term responses and long term, strategic planning. We’re excited to be working closely with the policy community on this project and welcome applications from those who feel they have the background and skills to make a contribution to the project. You may have relevant policy experience that you wish to put to use in the research project or you may have a conceptual interest in evidence, cyber security and/or decision making processes. http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AYR850/research-associate/ *And the second one:* The *PETRAS Internet of Things Research Hub *is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for its thematic research stream on Standards, Government and Policy. The Hub comprises nine leading UK universities and over 47 partners from industry and the public sector. Its mission is to establish, over the next two years, a unique and exciting setting for research and development on critical issues in privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security for the Internet of Things in the UK. See also: https://www.petrashub.org/ The post holder will work with Dr Madeline Carr to conduct research on how global cooperation on the cyber security of the Internet of Things is developing and impacting on the UK. The project comes with access to a wide pool of academic, industrial, and governmental stakeholders as well as exciting research and development in this field. http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AYU495/research-associate-international-cooperati… Thanks, Madeline Dr Madeline Carr Senior Lecturer in International Relations School of Law and Politics Cardiff University mobile: +44 (0)752 867 2088 email: carrm(a)cardiff.ac.uk twitter: @MadelineCarr Y Dr Madeline Carr Uwch-ddarlithydd Cysylltiadau Rhyngwladol Ysgol y Gyfraith a Gwleidyddiaeth Prifysgol Caerdydd ffôn: +44 (0)752 867 2088 e-bost: carrm(a)cardiff.ac.uk twitter: @MadelineCarr *Recently published...* *US Power and the Internet in International Relations: The Irony of the Information Age* (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2016)

IAMCR pre-conference: Mapping New Perspectives and Debates on Digital Divide in Africa
by Massimo Ragnedda 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

*** apologies for cross posting *** Dear all Please be informed that we still have a few slots available on the following call. Thanks Massimo *Call for papers* *Mapping New Perspectives and Debates on Digital Divide in Africa* *IAMCR pre-conference* Social media platforms are being considered new podiums for political transformation as political dictatorships supposedly convert to overnight democracies as more and more people are not only able to gain access to information but also gather and disseminate news from a perspective of their own. When looking at the situation in several sub-Saharan African countries, it becomes clear there are several challenges standing in the way of social media and its palpable yet considerably constrained ability to influence political and social changes. Access to the Internet or lack of it thereof, is a recognized social stratification causing “digital divide” thanks to existing inequalities within African and several other societies throughout the world. Despite issues associated with the digital divide, mobile telephony is growing on the continent and the rise of smartphones has given citizens easy access to social networking sites. But the digital divide, which mostly reflects on one’s race, gender, socioeconomic status or geographical location, stands in the way of digital progress. What opportunities are available to tame digital disparities? How are different societies in Africa handling digital problems? What innovative methods are being used to provide citizens with access to critical information that can help improve their lives? This call will be seeking original contributions focusing on experiences from various locations in several sub-Saharan African countries with the aim of providing an updated, critical account on the digital divide and its impact in Africa. We seek theoretical and empirical contributions exploring these or any related themes: -Defining and redefining digital divide with specific reference to Africa and its Diaspora -Theoretical interpretations of the concept - Exploring the Afro-centered relationships between digital divide and digital inequalities -Differences between the first, second and third levels of digital divide -Protest cultures in Africa and how they have fallen prey to digital divide All submissions will be considered for inclusion in an edited collection and a special journal edition that we are currently putting together. Please send your abstracts or any enquiries to mutsvairo.bruce(a)uts.edu.au or massimo.ragnedda(a)northumbria.ac.uk • Abstracts due: May 15 2017 (In English only please) • Decisions on proposals: May 20, 2017 • Paper drafts: July 10, 2017 *Location* The pre-conference will take place at the Fundación Universitaria Los Libertadores on saturday July 15, from 9:00 am. Calle 31 No. 19 - 51 Barrio Pie de la Popa (Cartagena) * Conveners * *Bruce Mutsvairo is an Associate Professor in Journalism Innovation at the University of Technology Sydney. His two latest books (Palgrave, 2016) are Digital Activism in the Social Media Era: Critical Reflections on Emerging Trends in sub-Saharan Africa and Perspectives on Participatory Politics and Citizen Journalism in a Networked Africa: A Connected Continent.* *Massimo Ragnedda is a Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK where he conducts research on the digital divide and social media. He has authored seven books with his publications appearing in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. His books include: Theorizing the Digital Divide (co-edited with G Muschert), Routledge (forthcoming); The third Digital Divide: a Weberian approach to Digital Inequalities (2017), Routledge; The Digital Divide: The Internet and Social Inequality in International Perspective (co-edited with G Muschert) (2013), Routledge. * -- Massimo Ragnedda Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) mragnedda.wordpress.com skype: massimo.ragnedda http://northumbria.academia.edu/MassimoRagnedda Connect with me on *Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook*

Deadline Reminder: AoIR Doctoral Colloquium, 20 May 2017
by Michelle, AoIR Association Coordinator 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

Dear Colleagues: Deadline Reminder: 20 May 2017- Doctoral Colloquium at the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Annual Conference 2017, Tartu, Estonia The Association of Internet Researchers believes that its emerging researchers are the best in its disparate constituent fields. In keeping with its commitment to students’ scholarship, we continue the tradition of bringing emerging and established scholars together through the #AoIR2017 Doctoral Colloquium. The colloquium offers PhD students working in internet research or related fields a special, day-long forum, to be convened on 18 October 2017. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to spend a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation. This year, Ben Light and Susana Paasonen will coordinate the Doctoral Colloquium. We already have a great line up of mentors including: Andrew Herman (Wilfrid Laurier University – Canada), Sian Lincoln (Liverpool John Moores University – UK), Brady Robards (Monash University – Australia), Jennifer Stromer-Galley (Syracuse University – USA), Jenny Sundén (Södertörn University – Sweden) with more to be added. Interested students should prepare a) a two-page summary of their research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; and b) a brief statement indicating why they want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what they hope to get out of it. *These are due on or before 20 May 2017*. For further questions, don’t hesitate to contact the doctoral colloquium chair at aoir2017dc [at] aoir [dot] org. Submission information: https://aoir.org/aoir2017/subinfo2017/ Best Regards, Michelle AoIR Association Coordinator

CFA Postgraduate Conference - Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspective
by Chiara Poletti 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

*** Please spread the word to any postgraduate students in your network that might be interested. Thank you *** Post-Graduate Conference Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspective Monday 3rd July 2017, Cardiff We look forward to welcoming you to our first Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Conference! “Digital Communities: interdisciplinary perspectives” postgraduate conference will be organised by PhD students from the schools of Social Science, Computer Science, Law and Politics in Cardiff University, supported by the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). It will bring together PhD students and academics from different disciplines interested in studying the implications of the digital on society. The principal aim of “Digital Communities” is to encourage doctoral researchers to consider how the concept of digital communities is applied inside and outside of their own subject areas. Overview How are digital technologies impacting upon, and affecting the lives and relationships of people and things? How are communities developed and maintained in these contexts? How are they, and how could they be, governed and threatened? How can they be researched? Through this conference we will provide a space for discussion around emerging and pertinent issues faced by people and communities in their interactions with the digital, as well as the opportunities and barriers that face researchers studying the digital. Students at all levels of postgraduate study, as well as early career researchers, are invited to give presentations on their own research (ongoing or completed) as well as various aspects of their study and experience, including but not limited to: complete and preliminary findings, insights and observations, theoretical/methodological/ethical issues and approaches, problems and challenges, personal/professional interests and experiences related to the digital, and so on. Given this open and inclusive scope, we especially welcome contributions that have relevance across different academic and professional disciplines. Keynote Speakers Presentation groups will be bookended by two academic keynote speakers: Dr Athina Karatzogianni, Associate Professor in Media and Communication at the University of Leicester: “The Problem of Trading Discursive for Affective Power in Digital Political Communities”. Dr Suzy Moat, Associate Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, co-director of Data Science Lab: “Sensing human behaviour with online data”. Call for Abstracts Presentations will be 15-20 minutes, organised into three topical blocks, with Q&A sessions at the end of each block, and extensive networking and discussion opportunities later in the day. We encourage a wide range of submissions involving, but not limited to, the following thematic topics: Identity, subjectivity and digital communities: What kind of human subject is enabled by the digital? How does this affect people’s lives within and outside of their digital communities? How are interactions and expressions mediated by the digital? How are forms of activity and organisation privileged and stifled? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: “old and new” communities, community development and digital technologies, urban and rural communities, migrants, refugees, LGBTQ, activism and social movements on social media, influence on media and policies). Threats, antagonism and digital communities: How is problematic activity and speech (un)regulated? What old and new antagonisms propagate online? How are technologies used to disrupt, manipulate and antagonise digital communities and individuals? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: developing and supporting digital communities, cyberconflict and digital communities, technological threats, such as phishing/scam/privacy related issues, problems of governance and regulation of online spaces and communities). Study of digital communities: What is the ontological and epistemological status of the digital? To what extent are digital communities “new” or novel? What are the opportunities and affordances of different methods of research into the digital? What is digital data? How do the actions and structure of digital platforms and their operators constrain and influence methodological development? How can digital research draw from micro and macro approaches to research? What are the ethical challenges involved in the study of the digital? Topics appropriate for submission include but are not limited to: methodological and ethical considerations in the study of digital communities, different types of research: participatory approaches, community-centred design, case studies of communities, computational social science (e.g. digital communication dynamics, text analysis and natural language processing of social phenomena, network analysis of social systems, large-scale social experiments and/or phenomena, causal inference and computational methods for social science, novel digital data and/or computational analyses for addressing societal challenges, methods and analyses of biased, selective, or incomplete observational social data, social news curation and collaborative filtering, methods and analyses for social information). Abstracts should be 300 words, indicating name, institutional affiliation and title of presentation. Abstracts should be submitted no later than 15/05/2017 to this link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dc2017 You will have to create an account in Easychair in order to submit. We will notify you of acceptance by June 7. For further details please visit: website https://digitalstuffcardiff.com/ or write to CardiffDigitalStuff(a)gmail.com

Reminder of call for abstracts: Our data futures workshop (Tallinn 30.8.2017)
by Tuukka Lehtiniemi 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

A reminder of this workshop. One week left before the DL for short abstracts! OUR DATA FUTURES Datafication, referring to the conversion of life into digital data, generates new societal opportunities alongside power asymmetries. Initiatives, such as MyData, Open mHealth, MIDATA.coop, Hub of All Things, and Open Humans take datafication as a starting point, but try to steer data flows and data practices in a societally more sustainable direction. These initiatives address asymmetries in terms of data usage and distribution, or inadequacies of existing ethical and regulatory frameworks; they push for the rearticulation of concepts such as participation, sharing, governance, or public good. This workshop of the MyData 2017 conference invites scholars, participating in and studying such data-driven initiatives, to discuss how the capacities of data technology might be harnessed to promote social justice, new forms of agency, political participation, and collective action. We are also interested in research on data activism and how uses of data challenge accepted norms, assumptions and ideological projects. The aim is to promote debate on the ways forms of data are thought to guide, or shape us as we move into data futures, and whether the data initiatives succeed in promoting new communities of producers and users of data. Workshop: 30.8.2017 at Tallinn University, Tallinn, Estonia Abstract deadline: 300 words by 2.5.2017 Details are available at http://mydata2017.org/session/our-data-futures/ <http://mydata2017.org/session/our-data-futures/> The workshop is arranged in connection to the MyData 2017 conference, Helsinki, Finland & Tallinn, Estonia, 30.8. – 1.9.2017. http://www.mydata2017.org/ <http://www.mydata2017.org/> Regards, Minna Ruckenstein, Indrek Ibrus and Tuukka Lehtiniemi

Thanks Michael, you're correct. This is also possible with R package tuber. SO maybe for Claudia this is an option. The drawback is R has a steep learning curve. Not sure whether there is an easier solution. Python maybe? Apps as social control
by Alfred BOWN (ENG) 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows of any scholarly articles dealing with mobile applications as tools for the state and corporate control or regulation of individuals? I am starting some work on this, from major social apps like FB and WeChat (I am in China) to official government apps like the 15 state apps created for the New York council and government. Looking to explore the ways in which these applications create new possibilities for social control, and wondering if anyone has any articles on the subject - or related - to recommend. Hi Claudia, I'm not sure it's possible to collect all comments. The YouTube API delivers 100 comments maximum ( https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/comments/list) To download the comments can be done with R tuber ( https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/tuber/tuber.pdf) If you need more you could try scraping the comments, but I am not sure this will work on YouTube. Hope his helps Maurice On Mon, Apr 24, 2017 at 6:46 PM, Claudia Nazario <cnazario(a)email.arizona.edu > wrote: > Hello all, > > Is anyone aware of how to display all pages/comments a video has received > on YouTube at the same time (instead of clicking on "Show More" to load > additional comments)? > > I want to use a web tool to analyze the comments, but need all comments > visible simultaneously. > > Thank you in advance for any suggestions and/or alternatives. > > -- > > Claudia Nazario > > Ph.D. Candidate, Spanish & Portuguese > > University of Arizona > > > At the University of Arizona, "Anyone who directly witnesses a bias or hate > incident, believes they are a victim of bias or hate activity, or becomes > aware of an incident of bias or hate are encouraged to report the incident > to the Dean of Students Office and/or UAPD.
