Second CFP: Culture meets Data: Critical approaches. Brighton, UK
by Ryan Burns 02 May '17

02 May '17

Dear AoIR Colleagues I hope you will be interested in this call for papers for "Digital Culture meets Data: Critical Approaches" http://dccecrea.wordpress.com/call-for-papers-2017-conference/ * Call for Papers Digital Culture meets Data: Critical approaches ECREA Digital Culture and Communication Section Conference. 6th –7th November 2017, University of Brighton, UK Abstract deadline: 20 May 2017 Keynote speakers: · Rob Kitchin, Maynooth University, Republic of Ireland · Helen Thornham, University of Leeds, UK Conference theme: Algorithms and big data are today shaping our sociocultural and technical relations and our everyday experiences. Digital culture and communication are inevitably changing as media infrastructures, media practices and social environments become increasingly ‘datafied’. We may think of surveillance, algorithmic profiling and self-tracking for example. Wearable technologies such as fitness trackers allow people to understand the body as a data-producing object. Our use of commonplace media technologies is mediated by data in ways that we do not ask for, nor even necessarily know about or consent to. Data interpellate us. Yet data are obscure and enigmatic. But what does this turn to data mean for our research, scholarship and pedagogic practice? Has the data paradigm arrived as an unquestionable unifying concept for studies of digital culture and digital media, communication, technology? It may be that a shift of focus on algorithms and data is fundamentally disruptive to the ways in which we see our research and disciplines. It may even appear to limit the theoretical and methodological tools through which we increasingly try to understand mediation, the formation of identity, social life, politics and the creative industries. To others, the ‘datalogical turn’ may be plainly repeating the processes of earlier instances of technological innovation. And for some, it may provide an opportunity to frame new theoretical concepts and methodological tools for a whole new set of social, cultural and political phenomena. The ECREA DCC Conference “Digital Culture meets data: Critical approaches” asks the question: what theoretical and empirical perspectives on data and the digital can be used to augment and diversify our research and educational approaches? And how might we challenge data paradigms or aim to show alternative or complementary ways to address digital culture and communication? We invite empirical and theoretical research papers and panels that address themes such as: - Media studies and datafication - Researching media and culture using data methods - Data visualisation, art and design - Data and the role of the imaginary, fantasy and myth - Data cultures and neoliberalism - Data activism and citizen engagement - Data and critical literacy - Data and gender, race, class inequalities - Datafication and the creative industries - Feminist approaches to data - Machine learning and AI - Mobile and locative media - Quantified self and data cultures - Smart cities, data and sustainability - Social bots and the management of sociality The Conference will also host a YECREA Workshop entitled: ‘The ambitious early-career scholar in an age of precarity: questions, challenges, opportunities’ (Chaired by Ysabel Gerrard, University of Leeds). This workshop will facilitate open discussion between academics at various stages in their careers about some of the issues confronting ambitious early-career scholars in an increasingly competitive international job market. Submission details, individual papers: Please submit abstracts of 250-350 words, written in English. Abstracts should contain a clear outline of the argument, the theoretical framework, methodology and results (if applicable), and how this links to the theme and topics of this conference, or to the general concerns of digital culture and communication. Please include 3-5 keywords that describe your work, and a Bio note (max 100 words, stating affiliation). Submission details, panels: We welcome panel submissions, numbering 4 speakers. Please submit abstracts of 250-350 words per paper, plus a 250-350 word rationale for the panel. Workshop Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction @RO-MAN'17
by Somaya Ben Allouch 01 May '17

01 May '17

-------------------------------- Call for Papers The Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction A workshop, held in conjunction with IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (IEEE RO-MAN 2017) in Lisbon, Portugal, August 28-31, 2017. www.mutualshapinghri.com ---------------------------------- **Submission Deadline: June 1, 2017** Workshop topic The field of robotics has rapidly advanced over the last decades and shown great promises in different fields. After robots were introduced in industry decades ago, advancements in robotic systems have enabled them to increasingly enter and affect our everyday lives. Nowadays, we see robotic systems being introduced as assistants, team-mates, care-takers, and companions, in diverse contexts such as education, health and eldercare, the home, and in search and rescue. This development has started the discussion on the emotional, ethical and societal consequences of the increasing confrontations and interactions between humans and robots. Studies in human-robot interaction have shown that, when robots enter different contexts of our everyday lives, they can influence and change that particular context beyond its intended use purpose alone. The term mutual shaping explains the detailed process of technological design suggesting that society and technology are not mutually exclusive to one another and, instead, influence and shape each other. Society changes as a direct result of the implementation of technology that has been created based on societys wants and needs. The mutual shaping of technology and society approach focuses on analyzing how social and cultural factors influence the way technologies are designed, used, and evaluated, as well as how technologies affect our construction of social values and meanings. The decisions made in the design, adoption, use, and evaluation process affect humans attitudes towards, uses of, and even their conceptualizations of these (socially) interactive systems. Social norms, values and morals are both implicitly and explicitly intertwined with technologies, reinforcing or altering our beliefs and practices. Once a robot has entered a social environment, it will alter the distribution of responsibilities and roles within that environment, including how people act in that situation or use context. Accordingly, studies that show how use practices of robot systems and the social environment mutually shape each other, and what forms this mutual shaping process takes, is crucial for the future development of robots for broad societal use. This knowledge is required to inform the design and acceptance of new and existing robot systems. Call for papers The aim of this workshop is to inform the robotics community and its many stakeholders about lessons learned so far about the mutual shaping of robots and society. We will focus on how social factors affect whether people choose to use robots, and how robot design factors affect the social contexts in which robots are used. We welcome prospective participants to submit extended abstracts (max. 4 pages including references) covering any relevant topic contributing to the discussion on the mutual shaping effect(s) of robots and society. The goal is to discuss a wide variety of contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with the development and evaluation of robot systems (e.g. Human-Human Interaction, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Robot Interaction, Human Factors User-Experience, engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc.). We invite a diversity of topics from researchers and practitioners from a wide variety of fields who address strategies and lessons learned about mutual shaping of robots and society including, but not limited to: · Human-robot (non)use · Human-Robot interaction · Mutual shaping of robots and society · Evaluation of robot applications and contexts of use · Socially intelligent robotics · Multimodal assessment technologies · Design of robotics systems · Social analysis of robotics · Social cognitive systems The manuscripts should use the conference format. Please submit a PDF copy of your manuscript to [1]s.benallouch(a)saxion.nl and [2]maartje_de_graaf(a)brown.edu. by Jeremy Hunsinger 01 May '17

01 May '17

Transdisciplinary Studies https://www.sensepublishers.com/catalogs/bookseries/ transdisciplinary-studies/ Series Editors: Jeremy Hunsinger, Wilfrid Laurier University and Jason Nolan, Ryerson University Aims and Scope: Transdisciplinary Studies is an internationally oriented book series created to generate new theories and practices to extricate transdisciplinary research from the confining discourses of traditional disciplinarities. Within transdisciplinary domains, this series will publish empirically grounded, theoretically sound work seeking to identify and solve global problems that conventional disciplinary perspectives cannot capture. Transdisciplinary Studies seeks to accentuate those aspects of scholarly research which cut across todays learned disciplines in an effort to define new axiologies and forms of praxis. This series intends to promote a new appreciation for transdisciplinary research to audiences that are seeking ways of understanding complex, global problems that many now realize disciplinary perspectives cannot fully address. Scholars, policy makers, educators and researchers working to address issues in technology studies, public finance, discourse studies, professional ethics, political analysis, learning, ecological systems, modern medicine, and other fields clearly are ready to begin investing in transdisciplinary models of research. It is for those many different audiences in these diverse fields that we hope to reach, not merely with topical research, but also through considering new epistemic and ontological foundations for of transdisciplinary research. —— Currently there are five books in the series: 1. Towards Human Technologies: Biotechnology, New Media and Ethics by Naomi SUnderland, Phil Graham, Peter Isaacs, and Bernerd McKenna 2. Making a Difference: Science, Action and Integrated Environmental Research by Lorrae von Kerkhoff 3. Ontologies for Developing Things: Making Health Care Futures Through technology by Casper Bruun Jensen 4. Putting Knowledge to Work & Letting Information Play by Timothy W. Luke and Jeremy Hunsinger 5. Drawing as Language: Celebrating the Work of Bob Steele by Marni J. Binder & Sylvia Kind We are seeking manuscript proposals that fit our aims and scope. Manuscripts can be submitted at any time to Jeremy Hunsinger, Wilfrid Laurier University at jhuns(a)vt.edu or Jason Nolan, Ryerson University at jnolan(a)ryerson.edu There is a listserv related to the book series for people interested in transdisciplinary studies at: http://lists.tmttlt.com/listinfo.cgi/ transdisciplinarystudies-tmttlt.com

Submissions will be judged on quality of the system or of the analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Colloquium The colloquium continues the tradition of PhD workshops on e-voting. Since 2006 the PhD seminars have focused on various aspects of e-voting including technical aspects, legal challenges, identity management, verifiability of the vote, etc. The workshops took place in various locations in Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The goal of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. What makes this colloquium special is that it is truly interdisciplinary, where PhD students from legal backgrounds are joined by PhD students with computer science and cryptography backgrounds and by social scientists. Master students in e-voting and related areas are also welcome to participate. Each interested participant should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) of some two pages length using the conference platform. In addition to this proposal, participants are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their PhD project. This questionnaire will be send by email to participants who have submitted their proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Format of the Conference The format of the conference is a three-day meeting. The PhD colloquium takes places on the day before the formal conference begins. No parallel sessions will be held, and sufficient space will be given for informal communication. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Invited Speakers This year we have already confirmed two keynote speakers: David Basin - ETH Zurich Ralf Küsters - University of Stuttgart ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper Submission Paper submissions can be in two formats-either as a full paper or an abstract. - Full paper submissions (up to max 16 pages, including abstract, figures, bibliography); - Abstract submissions (2 pages, roughly 1,200 words). Motivational sentences
by María González Aguado 30 Apr '17

30 Apr '17

Dear list members, I'm working on how people use Instagram to recover from an eating disorder. I'm conducting an ethnography and come continually across motivational sentences with self-care and self-help advice. In fact, there are accounts aimed exclusively at producing and disseminating this type of images. I've looked for literature on this matter, but didn't find anything relevant. Any reference or details about people working or ongoing research projects in this matter will be highly appreciated. I will also really appreciate if you could give me any suggestions of literature or tell me about people and projects on how therapists and recovered patients use social nets to help others recover as an actual job Thank you a lot in advance. Best wishes, Maria -- María González Aguado Research Fellow- Department of Sociology University of Leicester University Road Leicester LE1 7RH, UK
