CFP: Indie Interfaces indie game symposium (Sep 28-30, Montreal)
by Felan Parker 03 May '17

03 May '17

Call for Papers – Indie Interfaces Symposium Technoculture, Art and Games Research Centre Concordia University, Montréal, Canada Thursday, September 28 – Saturday, September 30, 2017 PDF: https://www.dropbox.com/s/belv6a413otdvwq/indie_interfaces_symposium_CFP.pd… To succeed in indie games, simply making a “good game” is no longer enough (if it ever was). Capturing an audience and making a living has become increasingly difficult for indie developers, placing many in positions of economic and cultural precarity. In addition to the considerable labour of making games, to have a hope of success, developers must be constantly hustling and managing relationships with networks of other developers, players, and industry actors, as well as within their own teams. In this perilous environment, entrepreneurial and business acumen is of equal if not greater importance as creative vision and technical skill. Contrary to the romantic indie auteurism exemplified by Indie Game: The Movie, in the contemporary indie gaming ecosystem, press, curators, and popular influencers, publishers, platform holders, government agencies, community organizations, co-working hubs, festivals, and other institutional actors play a crucial role. These intermediaries, brokers, coordinators, and maintainers do not primarily make or consume games; rather they “interface” between different sectors of the game industry and gaming culture, producing or extracting value and exerting a structuring influence on the field. These aspects of indie game development elude analysis; they are rarely acknowledged and difficult for outsiders to perceive. The “Indie Interfaces” symposium seeks to redress this by examining the largely invisible labour and social-material scaffolding that enables and sustains indie game development. “Indie Interfaces” is an intimate industry-academic symposium designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between academics and influential actors working in the field of indie games. Held in Montréal, a city renowned for its diverse and vibrant game development communities, this pathbreaking event will combine roundtable discussions among industry attendees and academic research presentations to foster productive, critical dialogue and collaboration. Moving beyond definitional debates about what counts as indie, this symposium is intended to stimulate innovative, interdisciplinary academic work that can feed forward into game industry practices. We are seeking submissions from academics doing research on indie games (defined broadly), with a specific focus on the actors, objects, and processes that scaffold independent game production, distribution, and consumption. All proposals are welcome, including those that engage the following topics and approaches: * Cultural intermediation and brokerage in and around indie games; * Maintaining, curating, and mediating games scenes and communities; * Indie career paths, precarity, venture labour, and gig economies; * Indie games and cultural/economic policy; * Geographies of indie game development (local, regional, transnational); * Economic and cultural sustainability in indie game development; * Collaborative workspaces and creative communities; * Ethnographic Studio/Production Studies of both development and community organizations; * “Above” and “below the line” labour in indie game development; * Indie game festivals, conventions, showcases, and exhibitions; * Analyses of indie game distribution, consumption, and reception; * Labour advocacy and organization in and around the games industry; * Entrepreneurship and innovation in indie games; * Political and cultural economies of indie games; * Analyses of gendered labour in and around indie games; * Affective, emotional, and relational labour; * Comparisons to film, music, and other forms of independent cultural production. Please submit 300 word abstracts, along with a brief author biography, to indie.interfaces(a)gmail.com<mailto:indie.interfaces@gmail.com> by June 5, 2017. Notifications will be sent out by the end of June. Full draft papers will be due August 1, 2017 and will be circulated to attendees in advance to encourage focused, productive conversations during the symposium. Symposium organizers: Dr. Felan Parker (Concordia University), Dr. Jennifer Whitson (University of Waterloo), and Dr. Bart Simon (Concordia University) The Indie Interfaces Symposium is made possible by the “Indie Interfaces: Examining Independent Game Development Support Networks” SSHRC Insight Development Grant, and the “Re-Figuring Innovation in Games” SSHRC Partnership Grant. Support is also provided by the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology and the Technoculture, Art and Games Research Centre at Concordia University, as well as GamePlay Space co-working hub in Montréal.

CFP - Dementia Lab 2017 - stories from design and research
by Niels Hendriks 03 May '17

03 May '17

Dementia Lab 2017 - stories from design and research 6 & 7 September 2017 (Dortmund, Germany) The theme for this year’s Dementia Lab is sharing the underlying questions that designers, researchers and educators face in their design process for and together with people with dementia. These questions vary from such practical challenges as recruiting persons with dementia to finding funding before a project begins or failing to have a method work as expected. Designers may struggle to find a way of communicating with people with dementia when words fail or have a hard time coping with the stress of dealing with people who are in constant mental and physical decline. Finally, once a design is made, designers and researchers often encounter resistance to the first iterations of the things designed or have difficulty integrating the designs into the routines of daily life and care. This second edition of the Dementia Lab event, wishes to support the sharing of these successes and failures by inviting contributions from designers and researchers who are designing for and together with persons with dementia. The event program is open for traditional contributions such as papers and workshop proposals. Additionally, there is the possibility to share experiences through stories as well as showcase the designs made for persons with dementia. The poster exhibition gives the opportunity to discuss preliminary ideas or share an experience in a poster format. Selected submissions will be published in the event proceedings. Deadline for submission: June 12 Notification of acceptance: beginning of July Dementia Lab event: 6 & 7 September 2017 See www.dementialab.com for more info. As the event is supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Fochhochschule Dortmund, the cost to attend is free. However, no more than 50 participants can attend. We have a travel support for students of up to 250 euro. Andrea Wilkinson & Niels Hendriks Social Spaces, LUCA School of Arts, University of Leuven (Belgium) www.dementialab.com

CFP: Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference 2017 - October 6-8, deadline June 1
by Todd Suomela 02 May '17

02 May '17

Bucknell University, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will host its fourth annual digital scholarship conference (#BUDSC17) from October 6th-8th. The theme of the conference is “Looking Forward, Looking Back: The Evolution of Digital Scholarship.” - What can different disciplines learn from each other when it comes to adopting or using digital tools? - What is the role of innovation in digital scholarship? Who is being innovative? - How is digital scholarship rewarded in, or beyond, academia? - How can we foster communication across intellectual disciplines and administrative units? - How is digital scholarship made? Who produces it? Who is excluded and who is included? - Where is digital scholarship published, promoted, and publicized? Is the message reaching the audience it deserves? - How is digital scholarship incorporated into the existing conversations of traditional scholarship? - What are the resources for sustaining digital scholarship? How are those resources going to change in the future? Can digital scholarship be done inexpensively without sacrificing quality? - Does digital scholarship have a responsibility to be open or engaged beyond the academy? How are these different responsibilities defined and grappled with? - Should digital scholarship be defined? Where should a definition of digital scholarship begin? What ends should it be directed toward? #BUDSC17 is committed to expanding the definition of digital scholarship to be more inclusive across diverse communities, both inside and outside of academia. The conference will bring together a broad community of practitioners--faculty, researchers, librarians, artists, educational technologists, students, administrators, and others--engaged in digital scholarship both in research and teaching who share an interest in the evolution of digital scholarship. The theme “Looking Forward, Looking Back: The Evolution of Digital Scholarship” acknowledges the changes to scholarship wrought by the introduction of digital technologies across the disciplines. Now is an apt time to reflect upon how digital scholarship has evolved over the past decades and where it may head in the future. Scholars and teachers, poets and administrators, artists and community members, are encouraged to reflect on the past of digital scholarship and work together to build a future for digital scholarship. We invite proposals that explore or critique digital modes of scholarly, cultural, and political intersectionality. Special consideration will be given to proposals that demonstrate how digital scholarship has been done in the past and how it may change in the future. Presentations may take the form of interactive presentations, project demos, electronic posters, panel discussions, work-in-progress sessions, workshops, lightning talks, or other creative formats. We look forward to building on the success of the last three years, in which we came together to discuss challenges, share working models, reflect on projects, and inspire new avenues for actively including students in public scholarly pursuits. For more information, please view our highlights from the 2016 meeting and this website. Proposals should be submitted online at http://budsc17.scholar.bucknell.edu/call-for-proposals/ If you have any questions please contact: budsc at bucknell.edu Proposals are due: 8:00 PM, Eastern Time (US), Thursday, June 1st Notifications will be sent by June 30th Todd Suomela, Ph.D. Bucknell Univeristy Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship Department

Re: [Air-L] Motivational sentences

Dear Maria I'm wondering if it will be useful to think of these sentences (which are presumably presented as images) as a type of *meme* I'm particularly thinking of Daniel Miller and colleagues' concept: "Memes are particularly significant as a kind of moral police of the internet. By using them people are able to express their values and disparage those of others in less direct and more acceptable ways than before."
