First CfPs: ACM IUI 2018 (Tokyo, Japan)
by Christoph Trattner 28 Apr '17

28 Apr '17

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM IUI 2018 is the 23rd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Along with 25 other topics in AI & HCI, this year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2018. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. - IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Affective and aesthetic interfaces - Big Data and analytics - Collaborative interfaces - Education and learning-related technologies - Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces - Explainable intelligent user interfaces. - Health and intelligent health technologies - Information retrieval and search - Intelligent assistants for complex tasks - Intelligent wearable and mobile interfaces - Intelligent ubiquitous user interfaces - Intelligent visualization tools - Interactive machine learning - Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation - Modeling and prediction of user behavior - Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) - Natural language and speech processing - Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI - Planning and plan recognition for IUI - Proactive and agent-based user interaction - Recommender systems - Smart environments and tangible computing - Social media analysis - User Modelling for Intelligent Interfaces - User-Adaptive interaction and personalization ** Dates ** 1st Oct, 2017: Abstract deadline (compulsory) 8th Oct, 2017: Papers deadline 7th Dec, 2017: Notification 21st Dec, 2017: Camera ready due 7th Mar, 2018: Conference starts ** Submission - Full and Short Papers ** We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical studies, or design techniques. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2018". ** Submission Guidelines ** - Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. - Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of Full papers. - Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: -- Author’s names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. -- Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. -- Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ... " is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al. [2] " is acceptable (because in this case the citation [2] will NOT be perceived as self-citation). - Failure to follow these guidelines may result in submissions being rejected without review. - Authors should also be aware of the SIGCHI Policy for Submission and Review at SIGCHI Conferences, see: http://www.sigchi.org/conferences/Conferences%20Policies/chi-review. - Submissions should follow the standard SigCHI format. Use either the Microsoft Word template ( http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/sigchi-paper-format-2016/view) or the LaTeX template (https://github.com/sigchi) Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation. Accepted short papers will be invited either as oral or poster presentation, depending on the nature and quality of the paper. ** AUTHORS TAKE NOTE ** The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.) ** Chairs - program2018(a)iui.acm.org ** - Margaret M. The Digital Everyday conference - 6 May at King's College London
by Feldman, Zeena 28 Apr '17

28 Apr '17

Dear friends, The Centre for Digital Culture at King’s College London is hosting its annual conference on Saturday 6th May. This year's theme is The Digital Everyday: Exploration or Alienation? This international conference aims at exploring the digital everyday, understood as the transformation of everyday life practices brought about by digital technology. From how we buy, walk around, get a cab, love, break up, go to bed, meet new people and sexual partners to the way we rate services, turn on the fridge, exercise, eat, use social media and apps, Big Data is reshaping some of the most basic activities in our lives. We will also explore a number of overarching dynamics and trends in the digital world that contribute to these transformations, including: processes of digital individualisation and aggregation; the elisions of spatial and temporal barriers; trends towards quantification and datafication; and the dialectic between control and alienation. We will have keynotes by Judy Wajcman, Susanna Paasonen and Taina Bucher and panels on play, self, labour, love, surveillance and place in the digital world. The draft programme is available at http://www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/ahri/centres/Digicult/CDC-programme-FINAL.pdf. The conference fee is £15 (£10 for students) and registration is open at http://www.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/ahri/eventrecords/2016-2017/Digicult/The-Digi…. Hope to see you there! 1st CFP - Crowds at Risk: Exploitation, Creative Destruction, and the Unintended Effects of Crowdsourcing Workshop @ ECSCW 2017
by Karin Hansson 28 Apr '17

28 Apr '17

[Apologies for cross-postings] 1st Call for Papers Crowds at Risk: Exploitation, Creative Destruction, and the Unintended Effects of Crowdsourcing Workshop at the 15th European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW 2017, August 28 – September 01) Location, Date: Sheffield (UK), August 29 2017 Organizers: Thomas Ludwig (University of Siegen), Karin Hansson (Stockholm University), Tanja Aitamurto (Stanford University), Christoph Kotthaus (University of Siegen), Elizabeth Anne Watkins (Columbia University), Ujwal Gadiraju (Leibniz Universität Hannover), Enric Senabre Hidalgo (Open University of Catalonia) Deadline for Submission: May, 19 2017 Webpage: http://crowdsatrisk.hci-workshop.org/ <http://crowdsatrisk.hci-workshop.org/> Abstract: Crowdsourcing comes with a number of positive promises for organizations: Cost reduction, a 24-hour workforce, and short-term knowledge gathering. On the other hand, this „creative destruction“ undermines labor rights and regulations. Unfair and opaque payment systems and socio-spatial inequalities among crowd workers are some of the pitfalls of crowdsourcing. ICT can lead to exploitation of the crowds and other negative (unintended) effects of crowdsourcing. This workshop examines crowds that are at risk (e.g. children), their characteristics and behaviors and the role of ICT within the crowd work. We welcome researchers from a diversity of disciplines and perspectives to illuminate insights into crowds at risk and trying to shed light on questions about what the destructive forces at work are, how work is changing, and what unregulated areas of “work” are exploited. Topics: – Ethical issues and groups at risk within crowdsourcing – ICT tools and attempts to establish sustainable work cultures online – Empirical studies about crowds at risk – Crowdsourcing contexts vulnerable for exploitation – ICT-driven new forms of labor – Crowd-workers responsible for their own infrastructures – Cybersecurity – Laws and regulating of child work/consumption online – Cases of exploitation of children as crowd workers – The gamification of the lifeworld – Citizen-based crisis management groups at risk – Cases of crowdsourcing as self fulfilment or self-exploitation – Crowd work and ownership in Platform Cooperativism Schedule: May 19: Submission May 19 – June 02: Review Phase June 02: Notification The position paper should be 2-4 pages and follow the ECSCW exploratory papers template. Send submissions and inquiries to the following email address: crowdsatrisk(a)listerv.uni-siegen.de <mailto:crowdsatrisk@listerv.uni-siegen.de>. At least one author of the position paper must attend the workshop. All participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. CfP: Reconsidering Design for Civic Engagement and Participation
by Karin Hansson 28 Apr '17

28 Apr '17

Call for Papers One day Workshop at ECSCW 2017 in Sheffield UK. https://ecscw2017.org.uk/ <https://ecscw2017.org.uk/> August 28th 2017 Reconsidering Design for Civic Engagement and Participation https://reconsideringdesign.wordpress.com/ <https://reconsideringdesign.wordpress.com/> We believe the HCI/CSCW communities need to put more efforts into envisioning new ways of designing for participation; ways that move beyond basic participation toward more manifold forms of inclusion (Le Dantec and Di Salvo, 2013) thereby enabling a means for engaging with power structures and marginalization (Balka, 2006; Beck, 2002; Shapiro, 2005). As such, we cordially invite researchers, designers, activists, technologists and artists that are exploring and/or experimenting with critical design projects, political design, design-for future-use, for and with social movements, alternative ways of living and alternative economies, to envision and generate a comprehensive program of research. The goal of such research program is to investigate emergent design practices that involve both the design of the material, technical artifact and the political movement, social enterprise or grassroots communities committed to enact social change through citizen’s participation. Some of the questions we would like to discuss in this workshop are: What is the designer’s agency in configuring and infrastructuring civic participation and engagement in society? How much should the designer be involved in the process of infrastructuring civic participation? What are the kinds of dilemmas (i.e. technical but most importantly, those associated with designers’ own values, beliefs, ideologies, subjectivities) that emerge when designers develop their practices in order to contribute to citizen’s participation and political action? Designers who are committed to contributing to civic participation; what are they sensitive to? How do designers’ practices and institutions configure and give shape to online tools for civic engagement and participation? How can the impact of civic technology design be sustained over time? This workshop seeks to bring together works that illustrate, analyze and/or critically inquire innovative ways to do design for civic engagement and participation. By innovative ways of doing design, we mean ways that go beyond applying PD methods with the aim to include the user in the development of a computer system or with the goal to reach consensus among the stakeholders inherently involved. We mean ways of doing design that envisage socio-technological interventions that partake in the ongoing constitution of publics or/and communities and put continuously design efforts into infrastructuring present and future civic participation. The workshop will consider the following topics: Research-oriented approaches as well as Design-oriented approaches focused on civic engagement and participation. We will consider both participation that aims to change the whole authority establishment (political hacking) and more narrowly-focused participation that nevertheless aims to change society (social entrepreneurship) and civic participation that focuses on improving specific aspects like voting, energy, sustainability, transport infrastructure, etc. Challenges involved when doing design with the goal of infrastructuring civic participation and specific ways to deal with them in order to contribute to development of resilient participation practices within publics and/or communities. What challenges were observed, in various cases? Research methods for the study of how designer’s role and design practices get entangled in tools developed for civic engagement, participation and political action. Learning processes involved in design practices aimed at civic participation, and in particular how they can be scaffold within designing for infrastructuring civic participation? Empirical or reflective work engaging with self-reflective design practices in HCI and CSCW, digital commons and making publics, the role of political hackers, social activists in configuring and infrastructuring civic participation, participatory policy design, and adversarial design. Important Dates May 26 – Deadline for submissions June 2- Notification of acceptance Submit your position paper ( 2-4 pages following the ECSCW exploratory papers template <https://ecscw2017.org.uk/papers-and-exploratory-papers/> for Workshops available at https://ecscw2017.org.uk/papers-and-exploratory-papers/ <https://ecscw2017.org.uk/papers-and-exploratory-papers/> ). Send your submissions to the following email address: tessy(a)dsv.su.se <mailto:tessy@dsv.su.se> At least one author of the position paper must attend the workshop. All participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.Position papers accepted and presented at the workshop will be published in the workshop proceedings and will be invited to submit to a special issue edited by the workshop’s organizers. Organizers Teresa Cerratto-Pargman <http://teresacerrattopargman.blogs.dsv.su.se/>, Stockholm University, is an associate professor of HCI, she is interested in the relationship between writing, meaning and technology from socio-cultural and critical perspectives of literacy and tool use. Tweet ID Datasets
by Ed Summers 27 Apr '17

27 Apr '17

The Documenting the Now [1] project would like to announce a small contribution that may be of interest to the AoIR community: http://www.docnow.io/catalog/ This website is a clearinghouse of tweet id datasets that are available elsewhere on the web. As you probably know Twitter's terms of service do not allow datasets of tweets to be distributed to third parties, but they do allow for lists of tweet identifiers to be shared. Twitter provide an API to turn the identifiers back into data as long as the tweet hasn't been protected or deleted. This process is often referred to as hydrating. To make this process easier we've added hydrate functionality to the twarc [2] command line utility, and also introduced a desktop application called Hydrator [3]. There are instructions on the website on how to add a dataset to the catalog if you would like to. Unfortunately this editing process is currently a bit cumbersome since the web application is very lightweight at the moment. If you would like help please let us know. We would also be very interested in hearing any thoughts you might have about the ethics and mechanics of providing this type of information. Thanks! //Ed [1] http://www.docnow.io/ [2] https://github.com/docnow/twarc [3] https://github.com/docnow/hydrator#readme

by Christian Fuchs 27 Apr '17

27 Apr '17

Open Data Movements in the Age of Big Data Capitalism Tue 16 May 2017 17:00 – 19:00 Organised by the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies 309 Regent Street University of Westminster London W1B 2HW Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/open-data-movements-in-the-age-of-big-data-c… A WIAS seminar with International Research Fellow Dr Arwid Lund and Open Knowledge Activist Dr Jonathan Gray Big data has received a lot of attention in recent years, open data/knowledge less so, and the relation between open data/knowledge and the predominantly commercial big data sector even less so. This seminar aims at critically discussing and shedding light on the under-theorised field of open data/knowledge and its relation to capitalism. In this WIAS seminar, Dr Arwid Lund reflects on his study of the ideological landscape underpinning the open data/knowledge movement (Open Knowledge London). Dr Jonathan Gray focuses on his own involvement in this movement and his forthcoming book Data Worlds: The new politics of information. The aim of the seminar is to introduce critical perspectives on open data/knowledge’s relation to capitalism, as well as a critical understanding of the political character that informs its advocates. We will round the event off with a wine reception. Dr Arwid Lund is a Lecturer at the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences, Lund University, Sweden. Arwid is completing the second part of his WIAS fellowship from 3 April 2017 to 2 June 2017. During his fellowship, he will be working on how ‘openness’ is understood ideologically by advocates within the Open Knowledge Network. His aim is to identify the ideological landscape within this movement. Dr Jonathan Gray is a Prize Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, University of Bath. He is also Research Associate at the médialab of Sciences Po and Tow Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia University. As Director of Policy and Research at the global civil society organisation Open Knowledge, Jonathan has founded and co-founded numerous initiatives, including the Data Journalism Handbook, Europe’s Energy, Open Data for Tax Justice, OpenSpending, Open Trials, The Public Domain Review and Where Does My Money Go?.
