new api for mapping the geography of global news coverage
by kalev leetaru 26 Apr '17

26 Apr '17

Apologies for cross-posting - thought many on this list might find of great interest and utility the new GDELT mapping API for creating point, ADM1 and country-level maps of the geography of global news coverage from nearly all countries worldwide in 65 languages over the last 24 hours, updating every 15 minutes. The API, which is fully free and open, generates both instant embeddable browser-based interactive maps and GeoJSON optimized for use with platforms like Carto. http://blog.gdeltproject.org/gdelt-geo-2-0-api-debuts/ Specify any keyword or phrase and search the English machine translations of all content monitored in those 65 languages, allowing you to search across languages. For each keyword, the system compiles a list of all locations (down to the resolution of a hilltop in many areas) that were found within a sentence or two of your keyword and constructs a map showing the locations mentioned most frequently in context with your search. You can also map specific languages, domains, by tone, etc. Perhaps most uniquely, we are releasing a set of experimental maps that apply the deep learning image categorization we perform on global news imagery each day (more than a quarter billion images processed last year) and let you search by 10,000 labels of objects and activities depicted in the image, the OCR'd text in more than 80 languages depicted in the image, all of the text contained in the image file's metadata fields, the textual caption of the image as it appeared in each article, and the result of a Google Images reverse search that compiles a list of all of the captions used for that image anywhere it was found on the open web and assigns several million topical labels. As but one simple, but extremely powerful example - one of our research threads revolves around how violence is depicted across the world and the differing levels of normative baselines (for example, here in the US ISIS beheadings are typically shown with a "before" image or a heavily pixelated image, whereas in the presses of certain other countries the raw graphic image is frequently shown; similarly in the US we rarely see imagery of drowned refugees with the notable exception of Alan Kurdi, while the presses of other countries run graphic imagery of those who perish on a more frequent basis). Understanding how violence is depicted in the presses of the world and how those baselines are changing offers a lot of insight into the question of desensitization and the communication of crises. The new API allows you to create such a map in just a few seconds and have it live update every 15 minutes - here is one such example map that displays up to five images from the domestic press of each country over the last 24 hours that were determined to potentially depict some sense of "violence" (click on each country to see the images from its local press). (WARNING: many of these images are very disturbing). While you will see some errors here and there, overall this gives a very visceral sense of the differences in depiction of violence throughout the world. http://api.gdeltproject.org/api/v2/geo/geo?query=imagetag:%22safesearchviol… Similarly, here is a map of rubble, destruction, flooding and fire that we are using in a series of forthcoming projects to ground truth the severity of natural disasters as they occur in realtime (note that this particular map below shows the imagery of damage FROM the press of that country, which may reflect events in other countries as well): http://api.gdeltproject.org/api/v2/geo/geo?query=(imagetag:%22rubble%22%20O… Looking at text, you can map a particular news outlet like AllAfrica: http://api.gdeltproject.org/api/v2/geo/geo?query=domain:allafrica.com Or source language like Chinese: http://api.gdeltproject.org/api/v2/geo/geo?query=sourcelang:chinese Or the phrase "Donald Trump", aggregated to the country level: http://api.gdeltproject.org/api/v2/geo/geo?query=%22donald%20trump%22&mode=… You can find many more examples, along with full documentation on the announcement this morning: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/gdelt-geo-2-0-api-debuts/ Feel free to email me directly with any questions! We are super excited to see what you all are able to do with these new capabilities! And stay tuned for our temporal API being released in a few weeks! Couch Internet Research Award 2017
by Mark D. Johns 26 Apr '17

26 Apr '17

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2017 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Dr. Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2017 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Tartu, Estonia. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, University of Tartu, October 18-21, 2017. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2017. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. Hello all, Is anyone aware of how to display all pages/comments a video has received on YouTube at the same time (instead of clicking on "Show More" to load additional comments)? I want to use a web tool to analyze the comments, but need all comments visible simultaneously. Thank you in advance for any suggestions and/or alternatives. -- Claudia Nazario Ph.D. Candidate, Spanish & Portuguese University of Arizona At the University of Arizona, "Anyone who directly witnesses a bias or hate incident, believes they are a victim of bias or hate activity, or becomes aware of an incident of bias or hate are encouraged to report the incident to the Dean of Students Office and/or UAPD. CFP: FOCI 2017 @ USENIX (May 26 deadline)
by jon penney 25 Apr '17

25 Apr '17

Hi everyone, Just sending along a note concerning this Call for Papers for the 7th USENIX Workshop on Free and Open Communications on the Internet (FOCI ’17), which will take place this summer in Vancouver, B.C., on August 14th The CFP is here: https://www.usenix.org/sites/default/files/foci17_preliminary_cfp_042017.pdf FOCI is an interdisciplinary workshop co-located with the USENIX Security Symposium that seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from a variety of fields focused on censorship, surveillance, and other practices that inhibit free and open communications on the internet. This year I am co-chairing FOCI with Nick Weaver (of Berkeley, ICSI, and Lawfare fame), so let me know if you have any questions. Among those on the interdisciplinary Program Committee are folks like Roger Dingledine (The Tor Project), Kurt Opsahl (EFF), Lex Gill (Citizen Lab), Molly Sauter (McGill), and Nick Feamster (Princeton CITP). One of the changes we made this year to encourage a broader range of submissions is creating a "two track" submissions stream, one for traditional FOCI technical papers and another for "law/social science" papers drawing on law, policy, or social science, with more flexible formatting and page limits. Please see the CfP for more details. *Submission deadline is Friday, May 26, 2017, 8:59 p.m. PDT.* I am cross-posting to a few lists that likely have overlap, so apologies if you've received this CfP more than once! Reminder: CfP deadline on May 8th View this email in your browser <http://mailchi.mp/dataforpolicy/reminder-cfp-deadline-on-may-8th?e=5b0bc1e6…> <http://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009ec…> Call for Papers, Presentations, Workshops, and Sessions - deadline May 8th *dataforpolicy.org <http://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009ec…> | @dataforpolicy <http://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009ec…>* Governments are being transformed under the impact of the digital revolution, although the speed of change is behind that of the commercial sector. Policy-makers in all domains are facing increasing pressures to interact with citizens more efficiently, and make better decisions in the light of data flooding in all forms, sophisticated computing technologies, and analytics methods. The hierarchical structures of governments are also being challenged as these technologies equip individuals and informal networks with the necessary tools to better participate in public decision making processes, and have a societal impact at a much faster pace than ever before. The concepts and tools from artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and now blockchain technologies are also likely to automate many services in the public sector, greatly increasing its efficiency but at the cost of potentially millions of jobs. ‘Smartification’ of people, devices, institutions, cities, and governments also brings constant, ubiquitous surveillance which, together with inference and recognition technologies, creates the potential to regulate human behaviour and may even threaten democracy. The third of the *Data for Policy* conference series highlights *‘Government by Algorithm?’ *as its main theme, while also welcoming contributions from the broader Data Science and Policy discussions. All relevant formats including research and policy presentations, workshops, fringe events and other innovative formats will be considered by the committees. *Topics invited include but are not limited to the following:* - *Government & Policy: *Digital era governance and democracy, data-driven service delivery in central and local government, algorithmic governance/regulation, open source and open data movements, sharing economy, digital public, multinational companies (Google, Amazon, Uber, etc.) and privatization of public services, public opinion and participation in democratic processes, data literacy, policylaboratories, case studies and best practices. - *Policy for Data & Management: *Data governance; data collection, storage, curation, and access; distributed databases and data streams, psychology and behaviour of decision; data security, ownership, linkage; data provenance and expiration; private/public sector/non-profit collaboration and partnership; capacity-building and knowledge sharing within government; institutional forms and regulatory tools for datagovernance. - *Data Sources: *Open, commercial, personal, proprietary sources; administrative data, official statistics, user-generated web content (blogs, wikis, discussion forums, posts, chats, tweets, podcasting, pins, digital images, video, audio files, advertisements, etc.), search engine data, data gathered by connected people and devices (e.g. wearable technology, mobile devices, Internet of Things), tracking data (including GPS/geolocation data, traffic and other transport sensor data, CCTV images etc.,), satellite and aerial imagery, and other relevant datasources. - *Data Analysis: * Computational procedures for data collection, storage, and access; large-scale data processing, real-time and historical dataanalysis, spatial and temporal analysis, forecasting and nowcasting, dealing with biased/imperfect/missing/uncertain data, human interaction with data, statistical and computational models, networks & clustering, dealing with concept drift and dataset shift, other technical challenges, communicating results, visualisation, and other relevant analysis topics. - *Methodologies: *Qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods, secondary data analysis, web mining, predictive models, randomised controlled trials, sentiment analysis, Blockchain distributed ledger and smart contract technologies, machine learning, Bayesian approaches and graphical models, biologically inspired models, simulation and modeling, small area estimation, correlation & causality based models, gaps in theory and practice, other relevant methods. - *Policy/Application Domains: *Public administration, cities and urban analytics, policing and security, health, economy, finance, taxation, law, science and innovation, energy, environment, social policy areas (education, migration, etc.), humanitarian and development policy, crisis response, public engagement and other relevant domains. - *Citizen Empowerment: *Online platforms and communities, crowdsourcing, citizen science, community driven research, citizen expertise for local & central decision-making, mobile applications, user communities, other relevant topics. - *Ethics, privacy, security: *Data and algorithms in the law; licensing and ownership; using personal or proprietary data; transparency, accountability, participation in data processing; discrimination- and fairness-aware data mining and machine learning; privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) in the public sector; public rights, free speech, dialogue and trust. Extended abstracts for individual submissions should not exceed 1000 words and group/special session submissions are limited to 4500 words (including general session description and abstracts for each of the presentations in the session). All submissions will also be considered for post-conference publications with prestigious publishers and those selected will be invited to submit full discussion papers prior to the conference. Submissions are accepted through the official conference website – *dataforpolicy.org* <http://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009e…> Partnership and exhibition opportunities are available and organisations can get in touch with Data for Policy Team (team(a)dataforpolicy.org) to discuss opportunities for collaboration. All general enquiries about the conference should be directed to the Data for Policy Team at team(a)dataforpolicy.org ------------------------------ *New Demonstration Track Added! * The Data for Policy 2017 conference introduces a special Demonstration Track alongside the poster sessions to provide a showcasing opportunity for new tools, technological advances, and services offered in this emerging field.
