Survey: Values in Visualization Work
by Jaime Snyder 22 Apr '17

22 Apr '17

Values in Visualization Work URL: http://bit.ly/2p9sER4 Building on recent conversations in the visualization community, including the survey by Meeks et al., this questionnaire will help us better understand the work practices and values of people who create visualizations and visualization systems. Responses will enable us to characterize motivations, priorities, and standards of folks within the visualization community. This survey should take about 20 minutes to complete. It begins by asking you for basic information about yourself, your training, and your background. Next, we ask you to reflect on what is most important to you when you are doing visualization work. All questions are optional, though we ask you to try to answer each of them as best you can. At the conclusion of the survey, you can sign up for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card (1 for every 100 participants). This work is being conducted by researchers at the University of Washington. If you have questions or comments, please contact Jaime Snyder (jas1208(a)uw.edu<mailto:jas1208@uw.edu>, @jay_ess). Thanks! The Political Economy of Hacking Symposium CfP
by christina dunbar-hester 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

*The Political Economy of Hacking – Accelerate, Augment, or Abolish the Markets?* *Circle 6: Appropriating Technology for Societal Change* 26th of July - 2nd of August, Saulkrasti, Latvia Deadline for applications: 1st of May *Theme of the symposium* Technology disrupt markets. It is open to debate, however, what this implies for the future of the market economy. Some hackers and activists look forward to the day when technological progress has abolished the need for market exchanges. For instance, self-acclaimed pirates strive to make intellectual property unenforceable with file sharing protocols. Hobby-engineers develop self-reproducing 3D printers under the slogan: “wealth-without-money”. The digital currency Faircoin has been launched as a more equitable alternative to the existing monetary system. Peer production, exemplified in free software development, is showcased as a non-coercive model for organizing work. Towering above these initiatives is basic income as a redistributive principle, arguably better adjusted to the age of full automation. The post-capitalist future envisioned by some hackers and activists contrasts with the “accelerationist” vision. According to the latter viewpoint, it is not markets but monopolies, guild privileges, and state regulations that are unsettled by technological breakthroughs. Virtual reality paves the way for “augmented property”, block-chain technology unlocks new areas of the lifeworld to just-in-time monetary flows, and computerization allows work to be parceled up in ever finer tasks and micropayments. Whose utopia will carry the day – you are invited to take part in the discussion! Relevant themes for presentations may include, but is not limited to, the following questions: • Is peer production still on the agenda after the rise of the “sharing economy”? • Is basic income the answer to automation and jobless growth? • What are the identities of future workers: employees, turkers, makers? • How is wealth distribution affected by platform capitalism? • What new avenues of marketization will be opened-up with block-chain technology? • Can alternative currencies be designed to fix the monetary system? • Historical perspectives on the rise of peer production/platform capitalism/sharing economy • Theoretical perspectives at the intersection of hacking, high-tech markets, and labour *Format of the presentation * Presentation of work: We wish to facilitate debates and therefore encourage free oral presentation rather than reading from a paper. A presentation should aim for 20-30 min., leaving time for discussions. Text: You can offer to present a text (own writing or a published text) which has been distributed beforehand to the participants. The text should not exceed 25 pages. The presentation must give a short introduction of the argumentation allowing participants to engage in discussion. *Submit via email. Deadline, 1st of May, 2017: * 1. A written proposal (ca 350 words) with a title, its format its duration. 2. A short bio (ca 100 words). Submit to: johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se and gustav.eek(a)fripost.org If you would like to attend the symposium without presenting, please email a short bio. Participants with presentations will be given priority. Preliminary program will be announced on 15th of May on www.nordic.university. Late submissions will continued to be considered, until the maximum number of participants is reached. *Application process and registration * The application process has two steps: (1) Application to coordinators for acceptance of presentation or participation without presentation. (2) After you have been accepted, the next step is registration and payments, which closes on 1st of June. All registration and payment will be done electronically. Note if you apply for participating late, payment must still be completed 1st of June. *Keynote speakers at NSU* Sigridur Thorgeirsdottir, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Iceland. Cecilia Malmström Olsson, freelance dance researcher, writer, lecturer. *Cost and accommodation * The NSU summer session is held from 26th of July to 2nd of August 2017 in Minhauzena Unda, Saulkrasti (Latvia) For more information about the place, please visit: https://nsu2017. wordpress.com/ Total cost per adult person, including accommodation and full pension, ranges from 200-550 € depending on the accommodation of choice. Grant and scholarship are available under certain conditions. See further on combination of categories and prices here:https://payment.nsuweb.org/ *To Doctorate Candidates* Despite its name, Nordic Summer School is not a summer school targeting doctorate candidates. It invites participants on all levels of the university as well as from outside academia. That being said, doctorate student is on request awarded 5 credits for participation and presentation at NSU. ** Christina Dunbar-Hester Author of *Low Power to the People* <http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/low-power-people>, MIT Press

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Rethinking digital health
by Adi Kuntsman 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

******Deadline extended to 1 May. Limited travel fundingavailable for presenters****** Please circulate widely. CFP: Rethinking digital health: experience, ethics, justice. A one day workshop for postgraduate students and early career researchers. 14 June 2017 https://sites.google.com/view/rethinkingdigitalhealth/home The Shed, Manchester MetropolitanUniversity Organisers: EJ Gonzalez-Polledo (Sheffield University), Adi Kuntsman(Manchester Metropolitan University), Esperanza Miyake (Manchester MetropolitanUniversity) In the recentyears, with the increasing use of tele-communication, mobile devices, smartphone apps and self-tracking devices for medical purposes, ‘digitalhealth’ has emerged as a field of interest for researchers in the socialsciences and the humanities. At the centre of this small but rapidly growingarea of interdisciplinary investigation are studies of websites and platformsfor medical care providers and patients’ self-help forums; conceptualexplorations of topics such as ‘digital embodiment’ or the ‘quantified self’;as well as explorations of digital health from the point of view of big data. However, these approaches often overlook issues relating to under- or mis-represented groups in ‘digital’ economies, and often celebrate, rather thancritically interrogate, the development of digital health itself. This workshopaims to challenge some of the unquestioned assumptions that guide researchers andpractitioners of digital health alike. We ask instead: How might a focus onexperience, ethics and justice contribute to critical digital health studies? In this one-dayworkshop we invite submissions from postgraduate students and early careerresearchers in social sciences, social care, humanities and the arts, whosework deals with digital health. Our aim is to collectively raise questions thathave not yet made their ways to the field of digital health. Suggested topicsinclude: - Overt and covert exclusions in digital health practices - Marginalised and disenfranchised communities and digital health - Race, racism and digital health - Digitisation, health care and disability justice - Ethics and politics of bio data/big data In addition topresenting your own work, you will have the opportunity to discuss relationsbetween digital media, research methods and critical health research in themasterclass ‘Chronic Media Worlds – Social media, epistemic justice andcritical health politics’; and take part in an interactive workshop on ‘Optingout? Digital health and digital disengagement’. Submissionguidelines: please send a 300 word abstract and a short bio to rethinkingdigitalhealth(a)gmail.com by 15 April 2017. Re: [Air-L] Nvivo for facebook pages

Instead of Python you could also use Rfacebook ( https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/Rfacebook/index.html) within R. R also has packages for other social media and of course all sorts of (statistical) analyses. R has a steep learning curve, but once you've mastered it you can use it for all types of research, not only for analysis but also for data collection through API's or web scraping (see https://cran.r-project.org/web/views/WebTechnologies.html) Hope this helps On Wed, Apr 19, 2017 at 3:51 PM, mona arslan <mona_arslan(a)hotmail.com> wrote: > I would be very happy to talk to anyone who has managed to capture content > from facebook page for NVIVO. NEW BOOK: Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy?
by Heather Ford 20 Apr '17

20 Apr '17

Very exciting new book by Stephen Coleman just out… NEW BOOK: Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy? by Stephen Coleman, Professor of Political Communication, University of Leeds - Polity Press; paperback, £9.99 From its inception as a public communication network, the Internet was regarded by many people as a potential means of escaping from the stranglehold of top–down, stage–managed politics. If hundreds of millions of people could be the producers as well as receivers of political messages, could that invigorate democracy? If political elites fail to respond to such energy, where will it leave them? In this short book, internationally renowned scholar of political communication, Stephen Coleman, argues that the best way to strengthen democracy is to re–invent it for the twenty–first century. Governments and global institutions have failed to seize the opportunity to democratise their ways of operating, but online citizens are ahead of them, developing practices that could revolutionise the exercise of political power. "This is a really outstanding book; Coleman’s ideas, as always, are compelling and clear, and presented in a way that grips the reader. This will be the most authoritative and up–to–date text on the topic." Peter Dahlgren, Lund University "Democracy is old and it is about compromise, not about getting one′s way. Technologies are new, and they attain popularity as they promise ultimate, personalized experiences. Rather than being put to use to reinvent democracy, much new technology has been retrofitted to serve dated civic practices. Coleman′s Can the Internet Strengthen Democracy? brilliantly recognizes this and asks why a new democratic future has not been presented for citizens yet. This books helps us imagine what the future might look like if technology were used to turn the flaws of democracy into strengths and produce a democratic system of governance built for the future. It is bold, it is engaging, and it is like nothing you have read before." Zizi Papacharissi, University of Illinois, Chicago "Since the early days of the web Stephen Coleman has been at the forefront of research into Internet and democracy, and has had a steady hand in pinpointing the difference between promotional rhetoric and experiments that yield dividends. His latest edition is no exception." Are Twitter Handles identifiable information? (eProtocol section 13)
by Ye Na Lee 20 Apr '17

20 Apr '17

Dear member of AoIR I am currently going through IRB process (non-exempt) for my research which involves analyzing tweets containing certain hashtags. In my opinion, Twitter handles do not constitute as identifiable participant information. However, I got a response from IRB, saying: "Twitter handles may or may not be identifiable, depending on the user. In some cases they are not identifiable, in many other cases they are identifiable (i.e., twitter users' identities are known). Names and emails are not the only variable that are considered "identifiable." Any information that can lead to identification of an individual is considered "identifiable." (See FAQ for further information: http://cphs.berkeley.edu/faqs.html#e1) Please revise section 13a to account for this. Ensure that corresponding updates are also integrated into pertinent sections/documents." Which means I need to remove identifiers, Twitter handles in this case from tweets as soon as I collect them like item 13d says. "Identifiers should be removed from data/specimens as soon as possible following collection, except in cases where the identifiers are embedded (e.g., voices in audio or faces in video recordings). If data are coded in order to retain a link between the data and identifiable information, explain where the key to the code will be stored, how it will be protected, who will have access to it, and when it will be destroyed." This will be very cumbersome for me because my research is not quantitative and does not involve collecting massive amounts of tweets at once using Twitter API. It is a qualitative research using virtual ethnography to explore and understand the conversation around a certain hashtag movement, which means I will need to constantly go back to certain Twitter accounts and use snowball sampling to collect tweets like searching who they are following and looking into these accounts as well. (I plan to use NVivo 10 to collect and code tweets) I assume IRB is taking more precaution about the security issues because my research involves the risk of cyberbullying. I understand the risk and will completely anonymize Twitter handles on my paper. However, I honestly do not see the need to separate/remove identifiers in the process of collection. I`d really appreciate if anyone who`s done a similar research as mine could tell me about their experiences with the IRB process. Thank you in advance.
