The conference is run in Europe but attracts researchers from all over the world. The 21st ADBIS conference will be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The conference is accompanied by satellite events, including doctoral consortia and workshops. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The Doctoral Consortium (DC) is a forum where PhD students can present their research ideas, confront them with the scientific community, receive feedback from mentors, and tie cooperation bounds. Students will receive inspiration from their peers and will have a chance to discuss their research objectives with senior members of the community in the context of an established international conference. The DC session will take place on September 24, in parallel with the workshop sessions. Each participant will present her/his work, followed by a discussion with senior researchers. ELIGIBILITY We seek PhD students who have either determined the direction of their thesis research (probably with some preliminary results already published), but who still have substantial work to complete, or PhD student participants who are in the early stages of their dissertation year. It is not required to have a paper accepted for the main conference in order to participate in the DC. SUBMISSIONS To apply to the DC, please submit a single-authored paper (which will appear in the proceedings of DC), accompanied by a short email from the thesis advisor stating support for your participation in the DC, describing the current status of the thesis research, and giving your expected date of graduation. The paper should outline the objectives, the problem, state of the art, results obtained so far, and what is still to be done in the frame of the PhD project. If an author prefers to present a completed research result, the paper should be submitted to the main conference or one of accompanying workshops. A paper submitted to the DC may not be under review for any other conference or journal during the time it is being considered for the DC. Submissions should be made electronically in PDF format at CMT: http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi…. In case of multiple files, please submit a single compressed file (zip or rar). After logging into CMT, please choose the "ADBIS 2017 Doctoral Consortium" track. REVIEW PROCESS Each paper submitted to the DC will be reviewed by at least two members of the DC program committee and will be judged based on originality, technical merit, presentation quality, and relevance. The authors of successful submissions must take into account the reviewers' comments during the preparation of the final version and describe the changes in a separate document to be submitted together with the final camera-ready version. The program committee reserves the right to reject a paper if the final version does not meet the requirements above. Applications not adhering to the provided guidelines (including page limits) will not be considered. The authors of accepted papers must register to the conference, attend the DC and present their work. CfP extended deadline:: Adoption and Acceptance of Interactive Health Technology (25/26 September, 2017)
by Somaya Ben Allouch 05 May '17

05 May '17

Please share widely. Apologies for cross-posting! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -- *Call for Papers* Adoption and Acceptance of eHealth: Beyond the current state-of-the-art A workshop, held in conjunction with INTERACT 2017 in Mumbai, India www.interactehealth.com 25th - 26th September, 2017 Workshop topic: The main approach taken in adoption and acceptance studies of interactive health technologies mainly follows a quantitative approach, often based on theoretical approaches such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) or the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Such studies mostly focus on a few, abstract factors, such as ease of use or perceived usefulness presuming a linear process of acceptance, but fail to give an in-depth overview of what exactly speeds up adoption and acceptance within a real-life context, also on the long term. In all, studies that show how different types of users with different needs and expectations make use of these technologies in specific healthcare contexts are crucial to inform the design of new interactive health technologies and their implementation strategies. The objective of this workshop is to discuss where we are today on the adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies and from this position, define a roadmap to push this field forward. Call for papers: The aim of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers from both industry and academia to discuss best practices as well as pitfalls of adoption and acceptance of interactive technologies in healthcare and to provide the Interact community with guidelines to inform future developments and implementation of their interactive health systems. We welcome multi-disciplinary contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with interactive health technologies (e.g. engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, communication science, cultural studies, nursing, fine and media arts, and law, etc.). You are welcome to submit a paper on one of the following topics: * Adoption and acceptance studies of interactive health technologies that expand upon TAM and UTAUT * Studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies that are based on different models than TAM or UTAUT (e.g., the Task-Technology Fit Model) * Qualitative studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies * Longitudinal studies of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies * Studies that focus on a specific factor that affects adoption or acceptance of interactive health technologies (e.g., trust, privacy, control, aesthetics) * Position papers on the topic of adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies Paper format: We welcome prospective participants to submit extended abstracts (max. 4 pages) covering any relevant topic (related to the problem statement on the homepage) addressing the adoption and acceptance of interactive health technologies. In addition to papers presenting empirical research, we also welcome papers about new theoretical perspectives, new methodological challenges, and design challenges related to interactive health technologies. The manuscripts should use the conference format. Please submit a PDF copy of your manuscript to s.benallouch(a)saxion.nl and l.vanvelsen(a)rrd.nl Workshop organizers: Somaya Ben Allouch, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands Lex van Velsen, Roessingh Research and Development, The Netherlands Timeline June 9, 2017: Submission deadline for workshop papers June 29, 2017: Notification of acceptance into workshops July 31, 2017: Camera ready workshop position papers (INTERACT deadline. This is a hard deadline) September 25 or 26, 2017: INTERACT workshops __________________________________________________________________ Please consider the environment and do not print this email unless absolutely necessary. Privacy and the Media
by Andrew McStay 05 May '17

05 May '17

New book time... Privacy and the Media is now out in paper and hardback with Sage. Review copies available here<https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/privacy-and-the-media/book245705#descripti…> and a sample chapter available here<goo.gl:cmbEhJ>. While dedicated privacy scholars (from media, politics, cultural studies, surveillance, law and information studies) will obtain fresh insights, I’ve kept this very student-friendly. In addition to ensuring clear and accessible language, each chapter contains key questions and think points, along with suggestions for further research. As you’ll see below, some of the topics covered are familiar, but others are of a more emergent nature. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1 Introduction PART 1: JOURNALISM, SURVEILLANCE AND POLITICS OF ENCRYPTION Chapter 2 Nothing to hide, nothing to fear: myth and Western roots of privacy Chapter 3 Journalism: a complex relationship with privacy Chapter 4 The Snowden leaks: a call for better surveillance Chapter 5 Encryption: simultaneously public and private PART 2: COMMERCIAL DIMENSIONS OF PRIVACY AND MEDIA Chapter 6 Platforms: disruption, connection and new social actors Chapter 7 Behavioural and programmatic advertising: consent, data alienation and problems with Marx Chapter 8 The right to be forgotten: memory, deletion and expression Chapter 9 Big data: machine learning and the politics of algorithms PART 3: THE ROLE OF THE BODY Chapter 10 Empathic media: towards ubiquitous emotional intelligence Chapter 11 Re-introducing the body: intimate and wearable media Chapter 12 Being young and social: inter-personal privacy and debunking seclusion Chapter 13 Sexting: exposure, protocol and collective privacy Chapter 14 Conclusion: what do media developments tell us about privacy? ENDORSEMENTS Privacy and the Media is a thoughtful survey of the privacy landscape. McStay reviews the intricate tensions and seeming contradictions to offer an accessible book for anyone curious about the contemporary debates in privacy. danah boyd Microsoft Research (US) This pleasingly accessible book tackles all the major questions that arise in a world whose lifeblood is our personal information; liberty, choice, transparency, control. It goes to the “conceptual, ethical and legal heart of privacy”. McStay argues that privacy is “not about isolation, going off-grid or being a digital hermit”. Rather, it is about managing our online lives and controlling how much others know about us. This book persuades me more than ever that privacy is a branch of ethics – the age-old relationship between the self and the other. Privacy and the Media’ is not a set of neatly answered questions or defences of established positions. It is a series of embarkation points for further exploration of an increasingly critical area of study, with real-world implications for the nature of our ‘datafied’ selves. The book will serve as a great introduction to informational privacy, not just for media studies students and privacy lawyers, but for any information rights professional needing a deeper understanding of the subject. Iain Bourne Information Commissioner's Office (UK) The only book that addresses the full spectrum of the innovation-privacy dynamic, ranging from advertising to intelligence to wearables. It is both timely and necessary; essential reading. Gus Hosein Privacy International McStay’s great achievement here is to confront many of the pertinent and complex questions about media and privacy in a style that is both authoritative and easy to read. He provides an excellent overview of the perennial debates and considers the implications on privacy of an increasingly data-driven media environment. His book will prove an excellent companion for all students of this fascinating and crucial topic. Prof. Mireille Hildebrandt Vrije Universitet Brussel Clearly and accessibly written, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in the broad range of ways in which privacy and contemporary media are entangled and in the big picture of privacy/media relations today. It challenges media studies to take privacy seriously as a media – and a mediation – issue. I will definitely be assigning it for my students. Travel Scholarships for #AoIR2017
by Michelle, AoIR Association Coordinator 04 May '17

04 May '17

In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available several conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. These stipends are mostly funded through the generosity of our membership. Applications are invited from authors whose proposals have already been accepted via the conference reviewing process, as well as by PhD Students applying to the Doctoral Colloquium. All applications should be emailed directly to the Association Coordinator, Michelle Gardner (ac at AoIR.org) and must be received by May 20, 2017. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should include (1) a short (2-page) CV and (2) a statement no longer than 2 pages that must include the following information: 1. A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the #AoIR2017 conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the conference. 2. An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Please include any information on access you have to additional funding. 3. AoIR membership is encouraged but is not a requirement for the application. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with their circumstances, special needs, etc. A letter of support is not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 (with one stipend of up to $1,500) will be awarded. Awards are intended to reimburse participants for incurred expenses and will be paid out after the conference. The awardee is required to provide expense receipts to AoIR in order access travel stipends. Decisions are made on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR conference. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a travel award from AoIR. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also enrich the #AoIR2017 conference for all attendees. Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you, Michelle AoIR Association Coordinator
