We look forward to welcoming you to an exciting conference in Troyes! Myriam Lewkowicz, Markus Rohde Conference Chairs chairs(a)comtech.community == KEYNOTE Three Challenges for Politics and Technology Development: Organizational Complexity, Virtuality, and Design Values Lance Bennett & Alan Borning The democratic process is in chaos in many nations. What role has technology played in this to date, and what are realistic goals for the role of technology in the future? How can we best design and develop technologies to support democratic process with participation from community members? How can we learn from deployments and help communities adapt to actual uses and results? These elements of the talk will be illustrated with examples from different community projects we have done together, including a crowd sourced voter deliberation platform, a virtual assembly site for Occupy Wall Street, and a planned international thought network to address related problems of economy, environment, and democracy. Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age @ Goldsmiths, U of London, 18 May
by Feldman, Zeena 09 May '17

09 May '17

Dear all, This upcoming event in London may be of interest, especially for those working on issues of internet governance and activism. See you there, Zeena EVENT: What have human rights got to do with the technical running of the internet? DATE AND TIME Thu 18 May 2017 18:00 – 21:00 GMT LOCATION Goldsmiths University of London Lewisham Way Professor Stuart Hall Building, LG01 London SE14 6NW DETAILS In this third edition of Defending Human Rights in a Digital Age participants and audience will discuss how human rights activism can impact on the technical standards that govern internet design and its day-to-day running. These decisions take place behind the screen in organizations such as the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF), or the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3). Panellists will focus on ICANN for the most part, the US-incorporated entity that controls the Domain Name System that is a cornerstone of how the internet works, and people find their way around the web. ICANN has just completed its transition to a “privatized, multistakeholder" governance structure. At the same time activists have been developing a range of human rights agendas from within the organization's various working groups. The aim of this debate is to introduce these architects of the internet to a Goldsmiths audience; to discuss how human rights matter for what they do. Speakers will discuss questions such as: * Should human rights advocates get involved in the technical organizations that run the internet? * If so, how can lay-people make a difference in these expert-based settings? * What does it take to make human rights law and norms work for technical standards? * What sorts of skill and knowledge are needed to be able to have an impact? Is being in the room sufficient? * What do governmental and corporate representatives expect from civil society participants? The event will be live-streamed (tbc) and recorded, followed by a reception. Panellists: Hanane Boujemi, Senior Manager, Internet Governance Programme MENA Region. Affective Politics of Social Media Symposium
by Susanna Paasonen 09 May '17

09 May '17

Dear all, CFP is now out for the Affective Politics of Social Media Symposium held in Turku, Finland, October 12-13, the week before IR17! Confirmed keynote speakers: Crystal Abidin (Jönköping University / Curtin University), Kath Albury (Swinburne University of Technology), Nancy Baym (Microsoft Research New England) and Ben Light (University of Salford) >From clickbaits to fake news, heated Facebook exchanges, viral Twitter messages and Tinder swipes, the landscape of social media is rife with affective intensities of varying speeds and lengths. Affect, as the capacity to relate, impress and be impressed, creates dynamic connections between human and nonhuman bodies. Zooming in on these connections, their intensities, rhythms, and trajectories in the context of networked communications, Affective Politics of Social Media asks how affect circulates, generates value, fuels political action, feeds conflict and reconfigures the categories of gender, sexuality and race through and across social media platforms. Multiple analytical avenues have already been laid out for doing this, from Jodi Dean’s examination of affect and drive to Tarleton Gillespie’s analysis of the politics of platforms, Adi Kuntsman’s examination of “webs of hate” and Zizi Papacharissi’s discussion of affective publics as contagious articulations of feeling that bring forth more or less temporary sense of community and connection. Building on a growing body of work on “networked affect”, this two-day symposium features keynotes exploring the affective labour of social media influencers, the automation and quantification of the intimate, the netiquette of hook-up apps and the dynamics of music stardom and fandom, and invites contributions connected to affect and social media in relation to • collective action and political activism • sexual cultures and practices • harassment, hate and resistance • affective rhythms, intensities and investments • popular culture and everyday life In order to facilitate participation, the symposium has no registration fee but pre-registrations are required. To propose a paper, please send a 300-word abstract and short bio (max. 100 words) to affective(a)utu.fi by June 9, 2017. Registrations will be made available in August 2017. IAMCR preconference: deadline 15 May. Mapping New Perspectives and Debates on Digital Divide in Africa
by Massimo Ragnedda 08 May '17

08 May '17

Apologies for spamming your inbox. If you are attending IAMCR in Colombia this year, please consider our pre-conference call. We have just signed a contract with the *Amsterdam University Press *to publish all entries in an edited collection early 2018. If you are not attending IAMCR but are interested in participating in the book project, do let us know (esp if you can join us via Google Hangout or Skype on July 15 at 9 am local time) We have few spots available. Thanks Massimo Ragnedda and Bruce Mutsvairo *Call for papers* *Mapping New Perspectives and Debates on Digital Divide in Africa* ** Social media platforms are being considered new podiums for political transformation as political dictatorships supposedly convert to overnight democracies as more and more people are not only able to gain access to information but also gather and disseminate news from a perspective of their own. When looking at the situation in several sub-Saharan African countries, it becomes clear there are several challenges standing in the way of social media and its palpable yet considerably constrained ability to influence political and social changes. Access to the Internet or lack of it thereof, is a recognized social stratification causing “digital divide” thanks to existing inequalities within African and several other societies throughout the world. Despite issues associated with the digital divide, mobile telephony is growing on the continent and the rise of smartphones has given citizens easy access to social networking sites. But the digital divide, which mostly reflects on one’s race, gender, socioeconomic status or geographical location, stands in the way of digital progress. What opportunities are available to tame digital disparities? How are different societies in Africa handling digital problems? What innovative methods are being used to provide citizens with access to critical information that can help improve their lives? This call will be seeking original contributions focusing on experiences from various locations in several sub-Saharan African countries with the aim of providing an updated, critical account on the digital divide and its impact in Africa. We seek theoretical and empirical contributions exploring these or any related themes: -Defining and redefining digital divide with specific reference to Africa and its Diaspora -Theoretical interpretations of the concept - Exploring the Afro-centered relationships between digital divide and digital inequalities -Differences between the first, second and third levels of digital divide -Protest cultures in Africa and how they have fallen prey to digital divide Please send your abstracts to mutsvairo.bruce(a)uts.edu.au and massimo.ragnedda(a)northumbria.ac.uk • Abstracts due: *May 15 2017* (In English only please) • Decisions on proposals: May 20, 2017 • Chapter drafts: July 10, 2017 -- Massimo Ragnedda Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) mragnedda.wordpress.com skype: massimo.ragnedda http://northumbria.academia.edu/MassimoRagnedda Connect with me on *Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook*
