CFP REMINDER: Why VR? Why Now?: A critical discussion of Virtual Reality experiments and experiences
by Thao Phan 25 Jan '17

25 Jan '17

***REMINDER ABSTRACTS DUE February 10th*** *CALL FOR PAPERS* Why VR? Why Now?: A critical discussion of Virtual Reality experiments and experiences *Journal of Transformative Technologies* http://www.ttrujournal.com.au/call-for-papers/ *Abstracts due: * February 10th, 2017 *Issue Editors: * Simon Young, University of Melbourne Thao Phan, University of Melbourne Andrew Lynch, University of Melbourne *Send submissions to:* editor(a)ttrujournal.com.au The ‘virtual insanity’ predicted by Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay in 1997, has certainly arrived, bringing with it an unprecedented range of VR technologies and software to experience for the contemporary media consumer. While it remains to be seen which of the multitude of competing technologies (Sony’s PlayStation VR, HTC’s Vive, Samsung’s Gear VR or even the humble Google Cardboard) will reign supreme in the consumer market, there has never been a more pressing time for scholarly analysis of how this state of ‘virtual insanity’ came to be, and how we might better comprehend its significance for the academic areas of media, screen and cultural studies. For its inaugural issue, The Journal of Transformative Technologies (JoTT) invites authors whose research involves or intersects with critical discussions of VR. Is this generation of VR experiences truly the one which will “go mainstream”, and if so, why? Does VR have the potential to supersede other less interactive media formats like film and television with more immersive engagement possibilities, or will it end up on the ever growing pile of redundant and forgotten “next big things”? How does VR’s claims to universal appeal clash with issues of accessibility and imagined audiences? Do contemporary VRexperiences blur boundaries of genre in media entertainment, or are they still tethered to genres laid down by older media forms? What is the significance of aesthetics (both hardware and software) in embodied practices of VR? How have fictional representations of Virtual Realities and their input devices shaped expectations, or influenced the production, of the current generation of VR technologies? Potential topics may include, but are not limited to: - VR experimentation in art - VR experiences and genre theory - VR accessibility and design - Challenging expectations of VR experiences - The increasing omnipresence of mediated realities - VR and everyday life - Predictive imaginings of VR across other media forms - VR technologies and their futurist aesthetics - Haptic experiences of the imaginary through VR - Gamifying VR - VR technologies and media archaeology - VR and the posthuman/cyborg - Virtual experiences and critical studies of gender and sexuality In addition, we also welcome submissions that deal more broadly with issues relating to the areas of mediated realities and/or VR technology in theoretical or critical terms. We are open to nontraditional submissions including creative and nonlinear works. Please send all enquiries and submissions to editor(a)ttrujournal.com.au. Abstracts must be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae. All eligible submissions will be sent for double-blind peer-review. JoTT does not charge authors for publication. Abstracts to be submitted by *February 10th 2017* with full submissions due by *May 10th 2017.* http://www.ttrujournal.com.au/

Carl J. Couch Internet Student Research Award 2017
by Mark D. Johns 25 Jan '17

25 Jan '17

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2017 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Dr. Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2017 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Tartu, Estonia. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, University of Tartu, October 18-21, 2017. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2017. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. Johns Communication Studies Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Phone: 563-387-1347 E-mail: mjohns(a)luther.edu

by Hall, Margeret (KSRI) 25 Jan '17

25 Jan '17

Dear Colleagues, Please consider submitting to this SI, and forwarding to your relevant contacts. Apologies for cross-posting. International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction Special Issue: Following User Pathways http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/est/hihc-cfb-8.2016 Call for Papers Social media and the resulting tidal wave of available data have changed how researchers analyze communities at scale. However, the full potential for science has not yet been achieved, despite the popularity of social media analysis in the past decade. To date, few researchers invest in cross-platform analyses due to various reasons, e.g. variations in curating data, disparate methods and tools, complexity of cross-platform and mixed method analysis, methodological conflicts arising from mixed method studies, etc. "Following user pathways: Using cross platform and mixed methods analysis in social media studies" brings together a community of researchers and professionals to address methodological, analytical, conceptual, and technological challenges and opportunities of mapping user across platforms with mixed method analysis in social media ecosystems. Textbook Recommendation: Introduction to Digital Media Production
by Julian Hopkins 25 Jan '17

25 Jan '17

Dear All, I am planning two undergraduate classes that will mostly consist of practical training on the use of image, sound and video editing software, and website creation. However, there would also be a component that overviews of the role of digital media production innovations in changing local and global industry contexts. This part would enable students to learn about how digital media have changed work processes, production choices, professional pathways, etc through a comparison of the analog with the digital industry context. For example, how 'cut and paste' once upon a time literally meant cutting out paper and pasting them onto a master document. I have spotted 'Introduction to Media Production' (Kindem & Musgrave 2009 - https://books.google.com.my/books?id=-jgqBgAAQBAJ) which would broadly correspond to what I want, but the latest edition is 2009 which is a bit dated now unfortunately. I would much appreciate any advice for other texts. It should ideally be an introductory text that is not too heavy on theory, with an historical overview and examples, and could form a background for short answer/short essay assignments. Many thanks for your help, Julian --- *DR JULIAN HOPKINS* Lecturer in Communication School of Arts & Social Sciences Building 2, Level 6, Room 16 (2-6-16) Monash University Malaysia Jalan Lagoon Selatan 47500 Bandar Sunway Selangor Darul Ehsan Malaysia T: +60 3 5514 4920 E: julian.hopkins(a)monash.edu W: sass.monash.edu.my <http://www.sass.monash.edu.my/>
