She was formerly President of the European Sociological Association and has worked in Research Institutes and Universities in England, Austria, Czech Republic and most recently Scotland. Adam Burns has worked as an IT security advisor and has been instrumental in the development of alternative wireless networks since the 1990s, first in Australia, subsequently in London and Berlin, where he now resides. He is predominantly associated with the Free2Air network in east London but has also been very active in the alternative networks movement worldwide publishing extensively on community networks and participating in numerous meetings. Research on the Web Presence of the Alt-Right in the US

Hi All: I am writing a book on the Alt-Right movement in the US. I am looking at many aspects of the movement including the size and nature of the audience for its websites. I’ve found that all Hard Core Alt-Right websites combined got on average about 3 million visits a month and grew by about 17.7 percent over the last six months. But an obvious question is: What percentage of those visits are by people who are truly committed to Alt-Right ideology, and what percentage are by people who are merely curious or even opposed to Alt-Rightism? I have access to web traffic data from the provider SimilarWeb and can find out for a given time period what websites were visited immediately before, during, and immediately after a visit to a particular “target” site. For example, regarding the Hard Core Alt-Right site amren.com, I know that: ►The site most often visited immediately before the visit to amren.com was conservative-headlines.com; ►The site visitors most often had open during their visit to amren.com was thepoliticalcesspool.com; ►The site most often visited immediately after a visit to amren.com was dailykenn.blogspot.com. My question is what, if anything, can I infer about the political sympathies of a visitor to an Alt-Right site based on knowledge such as the above about his web-surfing history? Suppose “a lot” (5 percent, 15 percent, 50 percent?) of visits to an Alt-Right site are made by curiosity seekers or people doing opposition research. Wouldn’t we then see that “a lot” of the sites visited before, during, and after the visit to the target site were not Alt-Right sites? Conversely, if the overwhelming majority of visits to an Alt-Right site are part of a pattern of visits to such sites, wouldn’t that imply most of the visits were made by Alt-Right sympathizers? Or maybe not? Have any of you out there dealt with problems similar to this one? Do you know of any literature on such issues? Thanks for any suggestions you can make. Cheers, Thomas J. CFP: Imagining Intersectional Futures (CSCW Workshop) *Please feel free to forward!* CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Due: *January 8, 2017*. *Imagining Intersectional Futures: Feminist Approaches in CSCW* is a one day workshop to be held *Saturday, February 25* at the 2017 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW 2017) in Portland, Oregon. We invite participants to join us for a one-day workshop to imagine intersectional futures in CSCW and beyond. The aim of this workshop is to explore theoretical and methodological approaches that help us consider issues of gender, sexual orientation, and power in the design of socio-technical systems. This workshop will build on two previous workshops on the topic of feminism and CSCW. With this instantiation, we are motivated by an explicit commitment to intersectionality—a recognition that the effects of various oppressions cannot be understood independently. Considerable time will be devoted to discussing work in post-colonial feminism, queer theory, Women of Color feminism, and feminist critical disability studies. Through generative conversation, feedback on works-in-progress, and the initiation of outlets for new feminist CSCW work, we aim to 1) build on existing research and practice and 2) identify concerns and approaches for both designing and assessing research oriented toward intersectional and feminist futures in the context of CSCW and social computing. During the workshop, participants will share their works in progress, join each other for a “walking seminar,” engage in zine making, and discuss future collaborations and research trajectories. European society, and even the very idea of Europe, is under threat. First, the inherent contradictions of capitalism are obviously stronger than we thought: Greece, where the emphatic idea of “Europe” originated, has experienced severe austerity measures; Europe has seen a deepening of neo-liberal politics, threats to what remains of the welfare state and increasing inequality. Second, solidarities are fragmented in and between societies across Europe. The new world economic crisis formed a context for both the constitution and the undermining of solidarities. On the one hand, from the Arab Uprisings to the various Occupy and Indignados movements and their manifestations at the level of political parties we have seen rebellions by citizens demanding political change. On the other hand, refugees fleeing wars have been denied human rights and their lives have been threatened by the closure of borders and the lack of a coordinated European strategy. Third, subjectivities are formed that do not only result in resistance and protest, but also in apathy, despair, depression, and anxiety. Authoritarianism, nationalism, racism, xenophobia, right-wing extremism, spirals of violence, and ideological fundamentalisms have proliferated throughout the world, including in Europe. As a result, the promise of Europe and the geographical, political, and social borders of Europe have been unmade and this ‘unmaking’ poses a profound challenge for sociology and the social sciences more generally. It is in this context that the European Sociological Association’s 2017 Conference takes place in Athens at the epicentre of the European crisis. Call for the ICA 2017 Pre-Conference ‘Data and the Future of Critical Social Research' Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division of the International Communication Association Event date: 25 May 2017, 9:00 AM - 5 PM, San Diego, California, USA Deadline for proposals: January 15th, 2017 (500 words abstract) Organisers: Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen) What we call media and mediated communication is more and more interwoven with processes of datafication in an environment of continuous and largely automated data-gathering, for example, from our activities online or our mobile phone use. The uses of data collected, aggregated and analysed by systems of computers are today a precondition for everyday life. In short, data are changing social ontology, and as a result the role of 'media' within the constitution of the social. This can be understood as part of a process of 'deep' mediatization - in which the very elements and building-blocks from which social is constructed are based in processes of mediation, accompanied by automated data processing. In this transformed context, this pre-conference asks: What do such changes mean for critical communications and social research - indeed for critical social theory and informed political action generally? How should we now do critical empirical research into media and communications bearing this deep mediatization in mind? The pre-conference aims both to focus these questions theoretically and to encourage perspectives on what constitutes critical empirical research under such conditions. Questions on which we welcome either theoretical or empirical contributions include: - What sort of economic, political and social order is being built through today’s data relations and their underlying linked infrastructures? - How are the self's relations to institutional power changing through digital traces, data relations and with implications for autonomy and freedom? - How is the nature of social institutions changing through deep mediatization and the pervasiveness of data relations? - Are practices of civic and political intervention for social change on balance stimulated or undermined in a datafied environment? - What does community and other forms of collectivity come to mean under these new datafied conditions? - How should we develop our methods for a critical analysis of processes of deep mediatization? - What kind of social interventions are needed that build from critical analyses of datafication? A user's understanding of the information need and the overall task develops as he or she interacts with the system. Supporting the various stages of this task involves many aspects of the system, e.g. interface features, presentation of information, retrieving and ranking. The Supporting Complex Search Tasks workshop (SCST 2017) aims at creating and fostering an interdisciplinary forum where researchers can exchange ideas about alternative experiments and prototypes, and contribute to the development of a research agenda in supporting complex search tasks. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite position papers addressing open research questions related to: * Context: What are the obvious use cases and applications of complex search? * Tasks: What are essential features of work tasks and search tasks to take into account? * Heterogeneous sources: With a multitude of information, varying from introductory to specialized, and from authoritative to speculative or opinionated, when to show what sources of information? * Search process: How does the information seeking process evolve and what are relevant differences between different stages? * UI/UX: What affordances are required and in what stage of the search process? Which measures should be taken into account? ------ Format ------ This is a workshop proper where discussion is central, and all attendees are active participants. We will start the workshop with a full round of introductions of all participants, making everyone feel welcome and part of the workshop. Then, the workshop continues with two short keynotes by keynote from academia to be confirmed and keynote from industry to be confirmed to set the stage and ensure all attendees are on the same page. Next, we will have presentations of contributed papers, with each paper getting a 1-minute boaster and a poster presentation in an interactive poster session. There will be 3-4 breakout groups seeded from the open research questions (see Goals) and the contributed papers, each group thoroughly prepared by a chair who guides the discussion, with examples from relevant IR evaluation campaigns such as the TREC Session and Tasks Tracks and the SBS Interactive and Suggestion Tracks, and from concrete examples of complex support systems with their UX and UI challenges. The breakout groups will report to the audience and a panel of experts, with continued discussion on what we learned, concrete plans for the next year, and a roadmap for the longer term. The discussion will continue during a social event, where the discussion will continue in a more informal way over food and drinks, deep into the Oslo night. The organizers have gained a proud reputation for their open and inclusive workshops, leading to new research collaborations, other workshops, and new evaluation tracks.
